Modding a duel was one of the last things Elisa had planned on doing, especially during her era of self-imposed exile from social activities. Still, somehow, one of the first years had convinced the usually grumpy blonde into doing so. It wasn't like she didn't know how to; she just never bothered getting into the sport. It was always Quidditch she favoured, never Duelling, a sport she believed was for savages who had no better job than to willingly take hits from spells and later grace the hospital wing with their presence.
The Duelling club was as gloomy as ever, potentially with both the duellists somewhere in there or rather late?
After climbing up the pist, she slowly spoke, in a rather lazy tone, "Take your positions, I assume neither of you requires instruction; but if you do, this is your time to ask, because after the duels, if you have any questions, it shall no longer concern me."
Elisa cracked her neck as she mentally hoped the first-year duo were well aware of what to do and wouldn't end up testing her patience, which at the moment was no less of a time bomb.
"If you are ready, then I officially begin the duel, start"
She spoke, before stepping out, getting hit by a spell was the last thing she even wanted currently.

𝕴t was that time again. Julia was back to duelling. This time, her opponent was Elowin Prankhurst, a First year Ravenclaw, just like Julia. Julia didn't know Elowin a lot, but they had encountered each other quite a lot in the hallways and often during classes too. They decided to do a duel in a quite abrupt way. Julia badly wanted to practice duelling so she approached Elowin after a class and had asked. Elowin had accepted and Julia had sought out to choose a moderator. Unfortunately, Julia had a tendency to choose older students to mod duels, this time, for reasons unknown to herself, she chosen a third year Slytherin called Elisa Shakestra. Though she looked quite nice, her personality seemed to suggest her being another grumpy teenager. Somehow, Julia had managed to persuade the girl, and so when she walked into the duelling room the next day morning, she found Elisa already waiting with Elowin as they got ready for the duel.
● ● ● ● ● The familiar aura of the Duelling room sank into Julia as she got ready feeling right at home. Her thoughts wandered back to the few duels he had done before. Some had been won, and others lost, but she didn't mind. It was all part of the game, and if she was to join the duelling team, she was going to have to get used to it. Julia had put herself on the waitlist for Ravenclaw's duelling team quite a while back, and was really hoping to get a chance to be part. Therefore, she had been duelling as practice ever since. She took a deep breath and shifted her focus back to the present. Elowin and Julia stood on opposite ends of the pise, both in their duelling stance. Julia did a quick survey of her surroundings. The room had never failed to make itself known as a duelling room. Heavy oak doors marked the entrance, on the rightmost side, bolted into the stone wall, was an iron placard reciting the rules and etiquette of the sport, upon entering she saw an enormous open room, its high ceiling illuminated by floating candles. Stone tiles made up the flooring, complete with a few cracks, no doubt from the years and years of duelling that had taken place. “Take your positions, I assume neither of you requires instruction; but if you do, this is your time to ask, because after the duels, if you have any questions, it shall no longer concern me,” Elisa said in a lazy tone. Her tone told the unspoken words of Do not ask questions. Thankfully, Julia didn't feel the need to. She knew duelling like the back of her hand, and was determined to keep it that way. Finally, Elisa started the duel with 11 words, “If you are ready, then I officially begin the duel, start”. Julia smiled and spoke only loud enough for Elowin to hear “May the best dueller win,” Julia spoke with the utmost determination and courage. She could only hope to live up to her tone. She had a duel to win. |

Elowin was really nervous. Julia was way better than her at magic and Elowin was an amateur. And for some unexplainable reason Elowin had signed up to do a duel with her. Well, she would just have to try her best.
~~~
On the day of the duel Elowin was prepared to carry out her battle plan. Which was, Plan A:strike first, Plan B: Sprint away as fast as possible. No, I’m not a coward Elowin thought to herself. She was nervous but ready. When she came to the duel, Julia said to her May the best duelist win. In her head Elowin said, I will try. She considered her options. She knew very few spells. She did NOT have the advantage over Julia. Julia had it over her. Darn it. Well I will have to work with it. Maybe Julia knows more but I can try!! Ok…. I will win this for mom. And for Cora and Father. And to Julia she said, Yes, indeed. Let the best dueller win!. Oh god, oh god. Ok I can do this. And she raised her wand instinctively. Before putting it down then raising it back up again. Just Chill keep Positive vibes El, positive vibes. And she struck.
Before Elisa could even close her mouth, the two overly excited first years began throwing spells at each other; they both seemed to have some experience in duelling, not much, but rather on the adequate side. Elisa observed each of their casting styles, critically observing their actions, choices of spells, and overall body language. This wasn't judgment; rather, Elisa's way to understand the two players and their skills.
Julia's attempt to cast a Knockback jinx failed poorly due to her shoddy wand movements. It was rather commendable of her to mess up one of the most basic yet popular duelling spells of the age so badly. Elisa urged the instinct to shoot a snide remark, afterall this wasn't her usual audience of 3rd years who were used to her gentle jeering, and could potentially lead to two ways, either one of them personally hurt by the comment, or someone telling on her to a Professor.
Elisa's focus went to Elowin, who, for her part, seemed to be doing well as she cast the Dancing-Feet Spell, her actions way too precise as it accurately hit Julia as the girl's legs began moving against her consent. Elisa found herself impressed by the choice of spells, afterall it had always been one of her favorites during her prankster era before her carefully constructed perfect life fell on her like a building after a rather wild earthquake.
Before the duel, Elowin had sent a letter to her mother, father and sister saying she was doing a duel. She had received the following one:
Elowin stood there stunned, stupefied, confused. Elowin was really shocked, but happy and pleased that not only had Julia missed her but she had hit Julia! Then Elowin had an idea. Just maybe she could use Julia’s own spell against her! She could actually do Flipendo. Elowin leant forward grinned and said cheerily, Once again, may the best dueller win! Hah! and gave Julia a cheesy grin. Have fun!. Slowing was nervous but she didn’t show it. She showed a positive attitude and slightly taunting voice. This’ll be fun,.. I guess. She thought to herself. What if Julia is expecting me to do Flipendo though? Should i do something else? Grr.. ok Flipendo or Taretaregrella? Elowin did eeny meeny miny mo in her head, and Flipendo won! Ok this will be fun ish. I hope. With her faithful wand held high Elowin struck before Julia AGAIN, and yelled her spell at the top of her lungs.
Dear Elowin,
Congratulations on being selected to do this duel. You know when I was at Hogwarts I was on the duelling team, and I was certainly the best! Hah! Your Father says good luck and Cora says try your best and have fun. I say WIN OR ELSE.
Love,
Mother
𝕴f it was possible, Julia's fist would have been crushed by her clenching them so hard. As usual, her accuracy had been inadequate, resulting in Elowin evading the spell even though (In Julia's opinion), Elowin was probably worse at evading then her. Meanwhile, Elowin's Tarantallegra hit Julia, and a moment later her legs started moving, quite willing, not waiting for permission. She groaned inwardly but didn't let it show. Maybe she was just off her game. Another wave of bad news had come from home, as though the events that had taken place during the winter were not enough to break Julia apart. She hated the world, why was it so unfair? So unjust? And why was it all directed at her. Julia shook her head, choosing not to linger on those thoughts. She had to keep her head in the game. Nobody part of the... conflict disaster would have wanted her to be distracted because of them. She had to focus. She looked towards Elowin. The girl leaned in, grinning cheerily “Once again, may the best dueller win! Hah! Have Fun!” Elowin said. Julia forced a small smile. She likely meant for it to be taunting or to show attitude, but quite frankly, it just looked stupid and annoying, but of course, she didn't let that show. The winter holidays had turned her into a master of hiding feelings, and nobody could argue with that. Not a single person had yet saw her true feelings, and they would likely never. For every second she spent, had her expressions behind a veil. Calm and controlled, she had to be that if she wanted to stay together with whatever little hope she had. Julia's thoughts wandered to her first days at Hogwarts, and how being all cheery and 'joyful' was a coping mechanism rather a way of hiding her true feelings. She had often done it when she was confused, nervous, or wanted to hide what she was feeling. Julia assumed Elowin was doing it for the same reason. Suddenly an idea sparked in her head. Offense in the form of Defense; Defense in the form of Offense. Julia had once been taught that. The Ravenclaw's smile finally turned real. She may have missed her spell, but she had gained something much better. Advantage.
Elisa observed both the duellists; there was Elowin, rather too excited and fidgety, and then there was Julia, who was more put together and was currently having a jolly time groaning and clenching her fist, despite her aim being terrible, at least according to Elisa it was.
As the duellists got back to the pace of throwing spells, the third year observed them; both of the first years barely seemed to be living in the moment, rather in deep thoughts, something which could've ended badly with a hit from a bludger or two if they had been in Quidditch. "Zoning out now will only lead to one of you tripping and falling. Get back to earth, girls," she spoke, her tone stern. Elisa was far too busy with life to deal with a broken bone or two if any of them ended up falling from the platform, especially due to sheer foolish actions like tripping.
A spell shot out of Elowin's wand, the flipendo, the very spell that Julia had miserably missed to cast previously, now aimed at her.
Elisa's gaze fell on Julia, who tried her best to dodge, but for the girls' terrible luck, it was a hit, as she got pushed to the ground, in pain yet again, it seemed as if the stars were definitely not aligned to be in her luck.
𝕵ulia groaned. Both from pain and exasperation, though mainly the latter. She had anticipated Elowin's flipendo and doged, yet her spell still hit Julia. The spell hit just barely, should it have been casted a millisecond later, she would have dodged, but of course, it wasn't. She felt like grumbling about her luck all day, but she shook her head and focused. While Elowin's evasion wasn't very good, Julia's accuracy was horrible, and Elowin's was completely the opposite. She had to disorient her. Confuse her. Somehow make her accuracy go down like paper. Her thoughts were interrupted by Elisa, the moderator's, voice. "Zoning out now will only lead to one of you tripping and falling. Get back to earth, girls," Julia couldn't help but roll her eyes. She wondered what made her choose this girl as the moderator. Not lingering on that thought, her eyes moved to Elowin. The girl, like Julia, also looked deep in thought, likely also deciding which spell to make use of. Suddenly, Julia felt a pang of... was it annoyance? “You may have hit me this round, but you don't know what's coming,” She snarled, only loud enough for Elowin to hear, her mouth moving without consent. Where did that come from? Nevertheless, she didn't say anything, much less apologize. Julia had been taught not to speak lies. No point starting now. With the little dignity she had left, Julia took her duelling stance, her face showed nothing but determination, and her eyes shone with boldness, daring Elowin, just daring to oppose.
Elowin Prankhurts: Post Missed
As time seemed to fly by, the game seemed to just get worse and worse. While both the girls were fine at casting the spells, it was their skills of accuracy and ability to evade those spells that continued to bother Elisa, as if both of them had come into the duel with a pact that both of them'd zone out in turns.
And that was exactly what Elowin seemed to fulfill as she remained still, almost clueless on the platform, as if her streak of damage on Julia with her spells just a while ago was nothing more than an illusion that never happened. Elisa couldn't see through her. Was it nervousness? Hesitation or just zone out? She didn't know, but what Elisa did know was that if it continued, it'd end with her weakness being used against her, and what she had predicted did end up happening.
Green sparks escaped Julia's wand, as they moved in a dashing speed towards Elowin, who realised too late on the spell that was cast at her; it was a perfect shot, almost a redemption arc from Julia's side after the display of her poor aim in the previous spell attack attempts.
As the spell affected Elowin, it was clear that the impact was damaging, especially with her record of evading all of Julia's spells from the start of the duel.
But as they say, sometimes even the best have to fall.
