So we have the alphabet
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
right? so if we had ibqqz and were told to shift once down the alphabet, you go one letter down, so
i → h
b → a
q → p
q → p
z → y
so the de-coded word would be HAPPY. Hope this helps!
(I often find it easier to write down the alphabet beforehand so I don't have to worry about getting the letters wrong!)
So in this case, you don't know what you're shifting by, could be 1, 2, 5 forward, 11 backwards, etc, etc. However each word shifts by the same amount (e.g: 1 forward, the next word 7 backwards, js an example) and you have to find those shifts and de-code it. Between the shifts there is ALWAYS a pattern, whether shifting by 2 then 4 then 6 then 8, or always shifting by 3, it's always there.
