Venice Smith wrote:Still not used to the castle grounds, Vee took a while to get to the dungeons. She was panting when she entered, thankful that class hasn’t started yet. She took a deep breath and went to the empty seat nearest to the front that she could find. She placed her book to the side of the table and fumbled with her fingers, staring at her desk as she waited for the professor and their instructions. After a minute to herself, she glanced around to observe the rest of the class. They were a diverse group, possibly half of the first years on each house was here. It was a rule that no one should sit next to anyone in their house, which was a bummer for some. Vee thought nothing of it, perhaps it would maintain a sort-of camaraderie between the houses. She wasn’t exposed to inter-house conflict but can feel tension between some Gryffindor and Slytherin students.

Everyone greeted the professor as they walked in. They instructed the students look for the Pepper-Up Potion, a potion used to cure a (or the symptoms of a) common cold. The potion seemed fairly easy to make but Vee still felt anxious, as she does when trying new things. She opened her book and wrote down all the ingredients she needed for the potion in a small piece of parchment.

They are asked to partner with the person next to them and so she faced the boy next to her, noticing him flipping through his book over and over. “It’s on page 34.” She said quietly, hoping to help out at least. She’s very observant and noticed that the boy was nervous. She felt a little bit at ease knowing they were similar in that respect.

My name is Venice. We are partners for this task.” She added softly, as she reached out for her cauldron and set it nicely on her desk. Content, she stood up, holding on to the piece of parchment, “I’m getting the ingredients from the cupboard, do you want to go with me?
Dakota then paused, noticing a Ravenclaw girl taking a seat beside him. He seemed speechless for a moment, but didn’t question anything, perhaps this would end out well. If he could handle talking to a group of strangers, then one wouldn’t hurt...would it? Relieved when the professor walked in, he sat up, although he did feel tense, to him this girl seemed superior in every way. It was probably because he wasn’t calm here like her, the male calmly waiting for the instructions, before deciding to speak. Turning around slowly, he pulled back from his book, listening to her before finally flipping to the correct page. He let out another sigh of relief and smiled shakily, “Thanks, Venice. I’m Dakota.” He responded, obviously soiumding very grateful for her help. Slowly rising to his feet, he nodded, “Mhmm, sure. Also, I’m sorry if I seem weird and such, I’m just nervous...But you don’t seem...bad.”

He stated, before standing up slowly, looking at Venice with a slight smile on his face. He then grinned, letting out a soft laugh, “Yeah, sure, let’s go.” He responded, forcing his body to relax and his voice to sound more relaxed.

It’s nice to meet you, Dakota.” She smiled and cocked her head towards him, “I don’t think you’re weird at all. This might sound horrible but I felt at ease when I noticed you were nervous.

I’m nervous too.” She added softly, hoping she didn’t come across negatively with feeling grateful for him being nervous. She gave him an apologetic smile, “You don’t seem bad yourself.” She waited for him to stand before walking to the cupboard, a small basket in tow.

We need mandrake root, english thyme, salamander blood, four pieces of fire seeds and bicorn horn.” She said rapidly, her eyes glued to the list she made earlier. She added looking up at him, “do we have a supply of already crushed bicorn horn? It said crushed bicorn horn, but I'm unsure if we need to crush it or it has to be crushed or...

Her eyes widened as she realised how fast she was talking. She always talked to herself, not used to working as together with anyone.

Sorry, it’s a bad habit.” She said, moving the piece of parchment to where both of them can read it - letting him look at the list of things they needed. Looking at the cupboard, she noticed that the ingredients are arranged alphabetically.

We’ll save more time if we do this together.” She pointed out, “B, E and F are clustered together... if you want to get those things...” She worried her suggestion would across as bossy or overly controlling, she didn't want to make him uncomfortable or more nervous.

{ OOC: For reference, I'm following this "recipe". :) }

All that stops you is fear. Do not allow it.

Ani slowly pushed open the door and sat down in a corner seat looking out into the classroom. She was very nervous and kept quiet as she listened. Looking around to see any possible acquaintances she did not. She kicked her legs back and fourth longing for someone to talk to before boredom overthrew her. She missed Jenna, a long time friend had since they were young, since her friend had not been sorted yet all she could do was wait and hope that her comrade would be coming into Hufflepuff. She again started to look around the room at all the other students in.
So she stood and started to look at thing for a potion wandering ad collecting the items she needed to make one. She placed it all down and got to work, silent the entire time alone. She soon got off track of the original potion and when looking at the color she poured it out and started over.
"Mmph..ugh why do potions have to be so hard to make...goodness" She mumbled. As she re-gathered everything she needed and started over. She didn't have anything to base off of so she was relying on her brain here.

Owen opened the door slowly and cautiously, half expecting to get yelled at as soon as he stepped a foot inside of the classroom. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed, his hair disheveled and his clothes looking like they had been thrown on in the span of seconds. He mentally promised himself that he would have to remember that he no loner had an alarm clock. Noticing the instructions to get with a partner, and all of the students already working in pairs. Owen looked around for any of the people he had already met, but didn't not managing to find any he simply went to the nearest person.  looking around, Owen noticed a Hufflepuff girl sitting in the corner, with an empty desk beside her. admitting he may as well start there, he walked up to Ani, and smiled shyly. Pointing to the chair next to her he said, "It looks like we're supposed to have partners or something along those lines, do you mind if I take the seat next to you?" After which he hastily added the phrase, "Or would you rather I find a seat somewhere else?"

She turned her glance to see him standing beside her. She remembered that they needed partners mainly and couldn’t really work alone. So Ani put the potion ingredients aside and turned back to face the boy, looking up at him.  “Oh, uh yeah I guess you can stay if you want. Most people wouldn’t decide to, but you’re here now so I guess it’s okay? So sure, take the other seat and Cmon to start helping me out here.”She motioned towards the seat next to her with the objects to make the potion scattered all over the table. Ani moves the things out of the way into the corner and went ahead starting to put some in and push others to the side. She wasn’t really paying attention to a recipe to create a certain potion. Ani was just throwing things in to see what worked. It’s what she always did so she had minor confidence in her ability to go out on a limb and create atleast something useful.

Owen smiled gratefully, saying, "Thanks," and after setting his books down on the table, he slid into the seat next to her. Owen,  still fussing and trying to get his robes to straighten out completely turned towards her, noting that she wore the colors of a Hufflepuff. Owen looked back down to the pile of books he had set on the table and after locating his potions text book, he moved the others down under the table. He began to pull out some of his potion supplies onto the table in the event they needed more. As he opened he his textbook he turned to ask Ani what page it should have been open to, but when he did so he noticed that she didn't even have a book on the table. Watching Ani  to an extent just throwing things into the cauldron without any obvious methodology, he looked up at her quizzically. "Are you sure that's the way the potion's supposed to be made." He looked around at a couple of the other groups, noting that most of theirs were different colors. " Do you want to take a look at my textbook?"

Ani just kept going, starting to throw more things in the cauldron. “Oh? No no it’s okay,I’m sure I know what I’m doing. Before here I practiced potions at my residence and did pretty okay. Trust me I’m good”

Owen looked her over again, reassessing what he had first thought about her.  "I guess if you say so." He buried his head in the book for a while, and after he had found the correct page he read it over quickly. Soon after that he kept looking between what she was putting in the cauldron and what the book was telling him with a questioning air, but nevertheless he remained quiet. Thoughts fluttered through his head, and he looked over the cauldron with worry another time. What was the chance that the potion might explode or display some undesirable quality? Perhaps it might be in his best interest to simply keep quite and let her do her work, after all, distracting her might cause more problems. Finally, curious and deciding to ere on the side of caution, he spoke up, "So you've been doing potions work for a while now, right? When did you start making them?"

Ani kept throwing things into the cauldron with no care at all. She was silent for a bit then-“Since I was around three, two parents as wizard and witch making me pure blood taught me much before coming here”

Adriel strode in, a little late, perhaps, but she seemed not to notice. She was increasingly excited to take potions. She was well-acquainted with potion brewing with her childhood experiences in her parents' apothecary, but, the chance to show off her knowledge and learn more than just the creation of medical potions excited her.  She was especially pleased to see the assigned potion, Pepper-Up, was one she was especially familiar with. It was common and, well, Adriel knew the recipe by heart. She glanced about the room. No one seemed immediately free for her to partner up with. No matter; she knew she could get started on her own. She practically skipped to retrieve her supplies, her mind busy and alight with the names of ingredients and supplies.
Bicorn horn, mandrake root, three sprigs of English Thyme, Salamander blood, and four fire seeds.
She moved to an empty table and cauldron, her arms laden with the strange assortment of plants, horns, seeds, and bottles.  She dropped them onto the table, catch the bicorn horn before it could roll away. Adriel snapped of a piece of the bicorn horn and dropped it into her stone mortar. She began to hum a tuneless song as she crushed the horn into a powder, completely in her own world.

We were born with the capacity and the determination to be utterly happy all the time. Perhaps even in this we were freaks.
