@Tes CadellThe walk to the Great Lake was quiet. Just how Rowan liked it. The castle was always noisy, footsteps, talking, ghosts complaining about things that happened centuries ago non stop. It made her head hurt. Rowan wasn't used to that much noise, back at St.Brigids, the only noise the church or the convent had was the priest's sermons or the Mother Superior's nagging. But other than that, there was only the sound of faint breeze, leaves and forest. She had her bag slung over one shoulder, an old leather bag given to her two years ago by a "kind" donator, the strap was digging in her frail shoulders through her sweater. The sweater was too big, sleeves hanging past her wrists, the hem almost to her knees. Grey and faded. Her jeans had a hole in one knee that wasn't from fashion, just from her being clumsy and not caring enough to fix it properly. Rowan took in a deep breath and stretched her arms, the March air was cold but not freezing, the kind of cold that made your nose run if you stayed out too long.
Rowan sat down on a rock near the water's edge, dropping her bag beside her. She was supposed to meet a Slytherin girl here for a Charms assignement... or was it Potions ? Rowan couldn't quite recall which one it was. It didnt matter, she arrived quite early, which was unusual considering she was late to almost everything in her life. Meals, classes, curfews, meetings...But this time, it was different. She wanted to watch the lake since she got to Hogwarts and never had the chance to. But now, she sighed, Finally.
The Slytherin girl she was supposed to meet wouldn't be here for another ten minutes so she had enough time to enjoy herself.
She pulled her knees up, wrapping her arms around them, and just looked at the lake. It was grey today, grey like the sky, grey like the castle stones, grey like her sweater, grey like everything in Ireland but bigger. She wondered what was under it. Merpeople, probably, giant squids. Stuff that didn't care about her existence at all.
That was nice. Being somewhere nothing cared about you. She thought to herself.
Her mind drifted, distant. What would her mother be doing right now ?
She would probably be having tea, alone in that tiny room. Sister Agnes would be polishing something that didn't need polishing. The convent would be quiet, the way it always was, full of silence that felt heavy instead of peaceful. It would just be quieter this time with Rowan away and no one to scold or run after.
Rowan pulled a piece of grass from the ground and started picking it apart, watching the tiny green pieces fall between her fingers. 5 minutes passed, then 10. She stared at the watch on her wrist.
Maybe she forgot. Maybe she's dead. Maybe she's avoiding me. Can't blame her.

@Tes CadellRowan didn't move right away. She heard the footsteps and the soft thud of a bag. The "hum hum" pulled her back. She blinked, turning toward the girl standing a few feet away.
Brown hair neat. Clothes that actually fit, clean jeans, shoes that weren't scuffed. She looked put together in a way Rowan had never figured out how to be. Not flashy, just... elegant. Like she'd woken up already knowing how to exist in her own skin. Rowan admired that, quietly, she'd never say it out loud or admit it but she noticed.
Some people just have it. Must be nice. The girl looked about as thrilled as Rowan felt.
"You're late," Rowan said flat. "I was hoping you'd bailed."
She pulled her knees in tighter, wrapping her arms around them. Her oversized grey jumper swallowed her hands. Her shoulder-length brown strands whipped across her face, sticking to her lips and tangling in her lashes. She kept pushing them back with impatient fingers, but they came right back, relentless. Rowan sighed.
"But you're here. So." She gestured at the empty space next to her. "Sit. Let's get this over with. I have better things to do than freeze by the lake with a stranger."
Rowan knew it was an unusual spot to study in, but the study room and the library were full of people at this hour and, honestly, those places were starting to bore the life out of her. The Ravenclaw reached over to her old bag and got out a piece of parchment and a quill that looked like it has been chewed on, the other girl was supposed to bring the textbooks, Rowan didn't really care if she did, it would have been actually beneficial if she didn't, then Rowan could just go back to sleep in her dorm. And they could postpone whatever this is to another day that will, hopefully, never come. Rowan thought.
"So." She gestured vaguely at the parchment. "You do the writing. Your handwriting probably looks like a person's. Mine looks like a spider had a seizure."
She paused, then added, "I'm Rowan. Vexeley. You are?"

I sat down on the floor, dropping my bag next to me as she spoke up "You're late" she said.
What a warm welcome, "I'm never late" I replied while I was getting some papers out of my bag.
"I'd hoped you'd bail" the stranger carried on.
Gosh. I don't make habits of failing projects, “Disappointing, I know.” I replied sarcastically
"Sit. Let's get this over with. I have better things to do than freeze by the lake with a stranger." at least we agree on one thing, “Then don’t waste time talking.” I sighed.
My gaze flickered briefly to the parchment she got out of her bag, it looked very worn out, but my thoughts were interrupted as she told me to do the writing, “I gathered that” I say pointing at her parchement, “Probably for the best.” I say getting my quill out and delicately putting the ink on a flat surface of the grass.
I started writing the title and our names.
What was her name?
I remember vaguely the professor saying it when she assigned groups but my memory has completely gone blank. Fortunately, she briefly introduced herself as if she read my mind, "I'm Rowan. Vexeley. You are?"
"Tes" I said flatly "Cadell."
I got out a few more things out of my bag, notably some Charm books that I neatly stacked between us, “Charms,” I added flipping to the correct page. “In case you forgot.”
My eyes scanned the text quickly, already picking out and noting on a draft paper what was relevant. The wind brushed stronger against our hairs but that didn't stop me from intensely focusing.
“You can talk,” I continued, not looking up after realising how much I was doing alone. Which I didn't care, but when the professor will ask what she has done, it might penalise me as well, “Or at least try to make yourself useful.”
