GRYFFINDOR!

I shivered as I walked into the Great Hall after the traditional ride across the lake in the grounds for first years. I lined up in the first year queue, waiting to be sorted into my house.

An ancient-looking hat was carried into the Hall. To my surprise, it could even talk! It sang a song about all the houses and their character traits, and the first student walked to the stool and sat down to be sorted.

I waited and waited. The minutes felt like hours. Finally… “Wang, Alice.” Called a voice. She must be the dupety headmistress! I thought, as I walked up to the stool, and the sorting hat. I had heard of all of the houses from my older brother, Johannes, that there were four houses: Gryffindor, symbolising courage; Hufflepuff, symbolising hard-working; Ravenclaw, symbolising clever; and Slytherin, symbolising cunning. He said that our whole family is in Gryffindor, except for our parents, our dad in Ravenclaw and our mum a muggle.

After I put in the Sorting Hat, it began to say to itself, “Hmm… Interesting… Very clever and brave… Hard-working too…” “Gryffindor… Come on… Gryffindor… Sort me into Gryffindor…” I whispered, very quietly. “Hmm… very well, then…”said the Sorting Hat, then it said loudly, like sorting the previous students, “Then you better be in… Gryffindor!” Everyone clapped as I joined the Gryffindor table.

Phew! I’m in Gryffindor! I thought. Let’s see if I strive to greatness in Gryffindor!
