𝔗he Hospital Wing hummed quietly around him. He could hear the whisper of fabric every few seconds, sounding comfortable in the room. Caspian lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, wishing he could do something, anything, to make time move faster. He was bored. No like, really bored. At least when Ollie had been awake, there had been something to focus on. He had even enjoyed their conversation. But she’d needed her rest, he could see how exhausted she’d been.

So he’d waited. And tried to sleep. Of course, sleep didn’t come easily. Not for him. He counted fingers, imaginary stars, he even counted sheep! Anything to trick his brain into shutting off. His ribs ached faintly from movement, a dull reminder that being human was overrated.

Then, by some miracle, he had drifted off. Not properly asleep, not the deep kind where the world turns black and you suddenly wake up and hours vanish unnoticed. It was somewhere in the middle.

The quiet was a thin layer of peace, stretched taut across the room. And then it cracked. Caspian’s eyes opened immediately. He turned his head slightly toward the other bed. For a second he thought maybe she’d just rolled over, but then he heard the murmuring. He knew right away that she was having a nightmare.

Caspian pushed himself up on one elbow before his ribs could protest properly. The motion sent a sharp line of pain across his side, but he ignored it. “Oll…” he started quietly.

A sudden scream split the quiet of the Hospital Wing.

Caspian jolted upright so fast his ribs lit up like someone had slammed a hot poker into them. “Merlin!” He sucked in a breath through his teeth, one hand instinctively pressing against the bandages around his side while his eyes snapped toward the next bed.

For a long moment, he just froze there, pulse hammering. The scream had rattled him more than he expected. What kind of nightmare could make her cry out like that? He exhaled slowly, trying to steady himself.

He watched as she grabbed a glass of water, calming herself down. And then, after a pause, he finally asked her. “Are you ok? That sounded… intense.”
