It had been some time since Valour fell into the reprieve of figure skating. She took gracefully to the art of dance, but always felt somewhat like a beached whale, frustrated by the limitations of dry land. To glide upon ice, drifting away like the tide, felt inexplicably right. From skating hand in hand with her parents as a child, to glimmering across the rink alone, skating was once but a hobby to the young heir. It was as her artistic obsessions grew and her desire to perfect the arts infected her mind when they realised their skill was a gold mine. Valour haunted the ice-rink day and night, a fixation that came second only to her violin. All of that blood and sweat boiled down to one fateful day, when they missed the landing of a jump. Everyone in the hall remembered the crack. The blood and the tears.

And now, the decorated artist was back on the ice. Like a prophet walking on water, Valour found her place before the judges. She came to win - naturally - but there were personal stakes at hand. These people did not matter. Valour bowed deeply, arms outstretched by her sides, before rising once more to face the sight before her. Pale, unfamiliar faces of their spectators, curious eyes studying every inch of them. Their poise, their costume, and each hair out of place. They simply lifted their chin up higher, a bitter dying dream lingering in their chest.

The piano began with a perfect abruptness. Sharp dissonant chords and a crooning voice permeating their air as the witch cracked into position with rehearsed precision. Fiona Apple was an unusual choice, but one they hoped would be memorable. They paid no reverence to meaningless traditions and uninspiring classical pieces. Not when it came to craftsmanship like dance. Their movements stretched out from their chest and towards the sky, brooding, angular and unorthodox. Her expressions were a housefire of emotion, scowling out to their anticipating audience with an intense stare. As though each movement was a motif on manuscript paper, her skates cut deep, jagged scores across the plains before them as they swayed and preened. The lyrics murmured a tragic, possessive story, and Valour did all they possibly could to grip and strangle their onlookers with their sheer elegance. Wand in hand, she whispered an incantation that would hopefully fall upon deaf ears but cause quite the shock. "Periculum."

As the song started to crescendo, Valour sucked in a deep breath and cleared their mind. Despite their wild and unruly dancing, the inner workings of their brain could not have been more still. The jump that had ended it all. A triple axel should be child’s play for someone competing in the International Magical Olympic Games, and yet, the taste of bile in their mouth said otherwise. Nevertheless, she continued to push it down and keep praying, arms tucked into her chest as she felt her blades grace the air.
