The owlery was a curious place. George had never seen this many animals in one place in the Muggle world save for one trip to the Edinburgh zoo. Even then, the concentration of owls within the owlery was truly baffling. There was very little traffic as you got further up into the tower, and the foul smell of bird droppings dissipated in the high-altitude winds up until you got to the top, where all you could smell was fresh mountain air and the smell of the nearby forests and loch. It was peaceful up there. That said, it was also freezing, and George had dressed for the occasion.

His winter cloak was draped over his casual wear - frayed jeans, patched with mismatched colors, and an ancient dusty-brown button-up covered his body. The cloak was oversized for his body, and draped down around the soles of his shoes, the boy needing to lift it up to avoid collecting dirt on his way up the owlery stepped. The boy had found a space to set himself down with his things at the very top, finding the view inspiring for the task at hand. It was time to reply to Alan's letter again.

George's owl had come to give him company as he wrote - Cadmus, the arctic owl, was perched nearby, observing George as he wrote yet another letter that the owl would have to carry. He was quite overworked, as he needed to carry drafts between George and the rest of the Headliner outfit. The Hufflepuff had a tendency to attach random items of some sentimental value to his letters, just as a nice treat for the recipient, which added needless weight to the parcel that Cadmus had to bear.

The letter was almost complete when the owl struck out, irritated by a strong gust of wind that blew him toward George. "Cadmus - stop!" George called out, trying to hold back the bird from knocking into him or his parchment. Unfortunately, it was to no avail. In his haste, George had knocked away his paperweight, and that gust of wind swept his letter to Alan up and carried it off above the Hogwarts grounds.

George could only watch helplessly as the letter was carried off, swirling around high in the air like an autumn leaf falling from a tree. Black ink stained the entire surface of the page - the letter had been nearly complete before that mishap. Cadmus regained his footing on the ledge, and George looked to him, and then back to the parchment, which was growing smaller in the distance. Finally, it disappeared.

"Well, that's a pity."

The third year was climbing up the stairs to the owlery while he was carrying a bunch of letters in his hands. Four of these letters were invites for his birthday party that he was going to celebrate with Willow. The two of them had spend the whole afternoon crafting those invites; doodling, sketching and coloring away until they realized that they would need space to actually write some information about the birthday. But in the end it had all worked out and the invites were simply perfect. Even Flash had liked them, when they delivered one to him into the Study Room.

Alan was wearing fitted black pants which left his ankles revealed and a wine red shirt with short sleeves. The days were getting longer and warmer over time, at least slightly. But it was enough to wear clothes that were not as warm. His hair was combed in a messy style, as if the task had been rushed in the morning hours. The day itself had tousled the hair into a mess, since Alan had a habit of raking his fingers through his hair. He was glad that he opted against wearing his Gryffindor cloak as it probably would have been pulled at by the wind flowing through this part of the castle. It was an open space to allow the owls to enter and leave as they pleased, which however meant for Alan that he was freezing a little as he got closer.

As he finally reached his destination, fingers wrapped around the letters and invites which were all neatly concealed by a white envelope, he pushed open the door with his other hand. A gust of cold wind swept through air pushing against him until he closed the door behind him quickly. If his hair had been a mess before, it would be a disaster now. He glanced around the owlery, greeted by the sound of rustling wings and the rasping sound of the feathery messengers.

Soon he caught sight of a familiar face and a smile found its way onto the third years face, despite the cold that covered his arms in goosebumps. "G-George! Wh-What are you doing u-up here? Visiting Cadmus?", he asked, his voice a bit more shaky than usual due to the fact that it was colder up here than he had anticipated. He saw the arctic owl next to George and could not help but smile softly and the animal, but he would know to keep his distance as he would rather keep his fingers attached to his own body rather than ending up as an owl treat. Speaking of owl treats! "I g-got something f-for you and C-Cadmus!", he exclaimed. Well it had not been planned to give to them, but Alan would not mind sharing his own supply of owl treats with his friend!

"Oh, hello Alan!" George said, turning around and shaking some loose feathers off of his winter cloak as he faced Alan. What a fortunate coincidence! He wouldn't even need the letter now. He could just tell Alan what it had said. What had it said? Hm. "You've brought something for me, have you? Is it a letter?"

George seemed to be in a most peculiar position - quill in hand, ink pot opened, but not a single piece of parchment in his hand. He lifted up his quill and pointed it outward, where the parchment had fallen, though it couldn't be seen any longer unless Alan had some truly miraculous eyesight. The letter was gone, the words he'd put on it instantly forgotten the moment they had flowed from his head out of his quill.

"I was just writing you a letter since I hadn't in a while, but... it blew away." He frowned, gesturing out over the forest. Hopefully nobody would find it, if it had anything too private in it. It had begun to seem like a wasted trip to the owlery before Alan himself showed up, but now it was quite enjoyable - seeing his friend up here and sharing the view. "Up and flew right down into the forest. Don't know about you, but I'm not going to go looking for it."

George smiled and let out a little laugh, turning his head to look out over the edge of the window, precariously placing himself at the edge of the ledge. He backed away after a moment of looking, realizing the danger. Then, he glanced back to Alan and held his hand out to Cadmus, summoning the owl to come and perch atop his arm. The Hufflepuff boy nodded toward Alan's armful of letters. "Seems like you've got a lot of post on your hands today."

Alan simply smiled at the Hufflepuff when he was greeted back by him. "No no, n-not a letter... but wait- hold th-this for a moment p-please", he mentioned and with that he pushed his letters into the empty hands of the younger Hufflepuff, so that he could look for the owl treats. Once he the letters and envelopes were in the hand of the other student, only a draw string sachet was left in his hands. He began to open the sachet with shivering fingers. Once he had done that, he opened his left hand, facing the palm upwards so that he would be able to catch the contents of the sachet he afterwards dumped onto his left hand. It appeared to be treats shaped like mouse and as far as Alan remembered they were funny shaped owl crackers made from nuts. The treat was quite expensive as the ingredients were all natural and the owl biscuits were made with high quality and realism; just smaller than an actual mouse would be.

"Th-Those are owl t-treats; I a-always buy them b-because Ivy - m-my mom's owl - l-likes them lots", he explained to George, handing them over to the other student while taking his letters back. "M-Maybe Cadmus likes them t-too", he added, smiling brightly at the student in front of him. At least he could try them and see. He was pretty sure that owls would bite less if they had something to munch on!

"O-Oh, you were?", Alan was surprised to hear that the boy was sending him a letter, it had been a while since they both communicated per owl. He assumed that both of them must have been quite busy, but he did not really mind since talking in person to George now was way more fun. "I-It's fine, I d-don't think going into th-the forest would be a g-good idea", the third year agreed with a chuckle. He remembered when Flash and him were quite close to actually going into the forest, Flash even running in there for just a few seconds, because it was something urgent they had to do.

"Oh, y-yeah, I am s-sending out i-invites for Willow's and my b-birthday; it's on A-April 2nd", he told the Hufflepuff and grinned lightly. Only a few more days and he would be fourteen, he wondered how that would feel. Would he suddenly be more smart? Alan shook his head, since that sounded silly. But he was sure that he was definitely looking forward to it, especially since Willow and him had made such great plans!

George accepted the pile of papers with a quiet hum, unsure of where Alan was going with this. Then, he saw the little sachet. He craned his head up high, trying to catch a peek of what was inside, only for Alan to upturn the whole thing and let the owl treats pour out. Little mouse-shaped crackers. They looked quite delicious, but he knew better than to taste-test pet food in front of other people at his age. Cadmus ruffled his feathers up, leaning in with great interest as he caught sight of the little mice.

"Oh! Cadmus'll probably like them then, aye," George said, exchanging the letters for the much more valuable owl treats. He plucked one up in his fingers, cautiously holding it before Cadmus. The owl plucked it right out of his hand, crunching it to nothing and angling his head back to throw it down his throat ravenously. He liked them, apparently. "That ought to stop him acting so rambunctious. Do I just give one? I don't want him to get fat."

Alan seemed surprise to hear that George intended to reply. He couldn't blame the other boy. His schedule was inconsistent, occupied some days by nothing at all, and other days by classes and work that took up all of his time. Very rarely did George think of staying in touch with people he didn't actually spend his day with.

"You're fourteen on the second? You're so old!" George said, with a bit of laughter. It was weird to him to have a friend that was so much older. He'd usually stuck to his own grade level at home, although it did mean he had very few friends. Most of the older kids spent time with his brother, who was the bridge between George and the world of the upperclassmen.

An awkward beat passed as George looked down to the pile of invitation and realized that Alan obviously hadn't intended for any to go to him. The Hufflepuff boy pinched the inside of his cheek between his teeth. It made sense - after all, he didn't even think George intended to reply. Why would he be invited? Alan had given him some owl treats, anyway. They were probably still friends.

"Sounds like fun! Hope you've congratulated Willow on the quidditch win," he said, with a bob of his head. He looked around the owlery, finding his ink pot and quill. He began plugging the pot and drying off the tip of his quill, trying to appear a bit more busy.

Alan hummed slightly, glad to hear that the owl might like them. As if to proof the theory, George held out one of the treats for his owl and Cadmus munched it away within a matter of seconds, clearly liking this treat his owner just gave him. "L-Looks like he d-does", he noted with a grin.

George asked him how many of those treats he could give to Cadmus per day and Alan vaguely remembered his mom telling him to never give Ivy more than three, if she delivered a letter successfully to him to Hogwarts. "W-Well Ivy c-can't have more than three p-per day, b-because she a-also still needs to h-hunt fresh food", he explained. He remembered when he had fed Ivy too many of them when he was younger and the owl had not been hungry enough to go hunt normally anymore, which was bad. Unbalanced diet is what his mom reprimanded him about, which sounded kind of silly, but he assumed it made sense. It was like when he had to eat more vegetables because he needed vitamins.

George seemed to be surprised by his age, which made Alan start laughing; a clear yet soft voice that slowly turned into a chuckle, making Alan's eyes gleam mischievously. But something seemed to change, George seemed to be thinking about something. It confused Alan but then he remembered the invites and that he and Willow had done none for George. Alan had not been sure whether the boy would have wanted to go to his birthday, after all they only met each other once before and that was ages ago! They had only owled each other a few times, so he did not want the other to feel awkward about getting an invite.

"U-Uh... y-yeah it's at the G-Great Lake at 7pm... i-if you wanna come t-too", he muttered nervy with a crooked smile. "I k-know we haven't r-really talked m-much so I w-was not s-sure whether you w-would want an i-invite! B-but now th-that we m-met here, I m-mean... a-asking doesn't hurt and w-we are friend after a-all... so?", he asked pushed his hair out of his face with the hand that was not holding the letters and envelopes. Alan asked the Hufflepuff. He hoped he did not misunderstand their shared owls, because he would really like to be one of George's friends. "We are friends, r-right?", he asked the Hufflepuff, suddenly not quite so sure anymore. It felt like they were though!

"O-Oh, yeah, I did! H-How couldn't I, she w-was amazing!", he replied and smiled. Alan knew that George had seen the game as well, which meant that he probably also saw how well Willow had done in the game. It was nearly not believable that this had been her first game, but it made it even more important that it went so well!

Suddenly, the quill and ink pot that George had been fussing with were no longer worth the effort. Treats- yes, the owl treats. That was a much more important conversation. George plucked two more treats from his handful, offering one and then the other to Cadmus, who ate them up greedily. "Three will do him then! Three for thee, none for me."

Cadmus was unimpressed, making to lunge toward George's open palm to snag up to rest of the treats when George pulled them away, shielding them in both hands.

"Hey! Greedy guts," the boy scolded his owl, stashing the treats away inside of his cloak for later. Cadmus kept craning his neck, tilting his head to try and get a look at where the treats had gone, but to no avail. They were safely saved for later.

That brief interruption hadn't managed to ease the tension in George's shoulders, nor swat any of the butterflies in his belly. George had noticed something he shouldn't have, and Alan had noticed him noticing. It was much easier when George carried on in obliviousness. If you paid attention, you started to see when things were happening, and things are the most terrible things of all. At this moment, George wished no things were happening. Just moments go, he'd had his letter cast out into oblivion, and there had been no things up here but him and Cadmus. Cadmus might not have liked him that much, but at least he had the courtesy to not pretend to like him.

We are friends, right? Hearing that turned every feeling in George's heart upside down. It wasn't that he was pretending to like him, it's that he was pretending not to. The Hufflepuff understood completely - sometimes, your social approach had to be subtle. He thought further on it and realized, really, that he would not have liked to receive an invitation. It would most certainly not have been exciting. It would have been awkward and strange. Stuttering your invitation in-person in the freezing cold wind on top of the owlery was a much more casual method.

"We're friends!" George agreed. Deciding to rip a page from Jake Morris' book, he spread his arms wide and threw them around Alan without much warning, giving him a warm squeeze. He regretted it immediately, but tried not to let it show on his face. He didn't want Alan to see and get the idea that he smelled or something. The hug had been regrettable through no fault of his own. "If you wouldn't mind me going, that is. I'll have to get going after this to find you a gift, though... and one for Willow, too. I should write that down..."

George looked out over the forest, picking his quill up and letting out a resigned sigh. A pity about that parchment.

The third year snickered joyfully at the small rhyme the Hufflepuff made up while feeding two more treats to his owl. Alan was happy with this turn of events, happy that he actually met George up here. However Cadmus seemed to be unsatisfied with only three of the treats, trying to get more of them, flapping his wings lightly as he lunged to grab more of the teats, which George quickly hid away in his pockets. "H-He seems to really l-like them", he joked in amusement, the grin not leaving his face. He was happy about that, because this meant he could give Cadmus some treats whenever he got an owl letter from George. Maybe Cadmus would not peck at him so many times anymore, if he had something delicious to feed to him. At least Alan hoped that it would be like this!

Alan was happy to hear that the two of them were friends, he really liked that! He honestly was surprised by the sudden hug, but before he could react, the Hufflepuff redrew as if he had gotten burned by the contact. Alan just offered a gentle smile, not bothered by the hug at all. He had a few friends that would hug him whenever he met them, or well, Willow did that all the time at least! "N-No, I would b-be happy if y-you could make it!", he chirped and his smile widened. He finally began to call over some owls, five in number, since he also had a letter for his mother to ask her about the present choice for Willow. He tied the envelopes to the owls legs carefully, giving each of them an owl treat of their own, careful so Cadmus did not see him have some of the treats as well. He did not want to be attacked by George's owl after all. As he watched the owls take off to make their deliveries, he turned back to George and grinned slightly, "So c-can I expect you t-to come to the p-party?", he asked the Hufflepuff until he remembered the most important detail. "It's a p-pajama party, s-so m-make sure to w-wear one!", he explained importantly.

George regretted regretting the hug. He was nervous and it was obvious now because he hadn't committed, hadn't held onto it for just a little too long like Jake would have if it were him. Maybe he just wasn't cut out for that technique. Even if he had begun to accept being part of Hufflepuff, perhaps he was still rejecting that Hufflepuff was a part of him. It involved too many hugs. Hugs that were like unwelcome house guests that overstay their welcome and wear you out after just a brief visit.

George reached back to rub his neck and scratching the back of his head through his hair. The smile on his face never dropped, but it took just a bit more force to hold it up after that poor excuse of a hug. "Okay- I'll come," he agreed, with a quiet laugh. Alan was trying his best to be nice, George could tell. If the party didn't work out, he could just walk back to his dorm and nobody would notice, anyway. He would try his best not to bother anyone. "I'll make sure I wear long johns. It'll probably be cold out there."

A cold wind blew through the owlery at that thought, sweeping George's hair into a messy style. He tried to pick it back into shape, but the wind wasn't letting him off so easy. Eventually, the boy gave up, shrugging again to his companion. A moment passed as the wind died down, leaving the pair of boys in silence. George spoke softly. "Thanks for letting me come," he said. The other owls flew away, letters safe in their care, while Cadmus simply stood and watched on his perch. "I guess we should probably get down now. I'm freezing."

Alan nodded in agreement with the other kid, it most likely would be cold and he was quite aware of that. But there also would be a campfire, as Willow had explained him, which would keep them all warm. "Yeah, it's gonna b-be cold, b-but also f-fun! W-Willow p-plans to h-have us c-cook white sponges a-above the f-fire that taste l-like sugar", he explained to his friend. He could not remember how Willow had called them while the two of them were decorating the invitation cards, but they had a funny name. They also sounded delicious, he wondered how the molten sugar clouds would taste like, but he would soon find out and it was kind of exciting.

"M-Me too! I d-did not expect it t-to be so cold u-up here!", he told the other kid, shivering slightly. He was only wearing his short sleeved shirt and gripped his arms tightly, crossing them in front of his chest as if to save as much body heat as he could, while he walked towards the exit of the owlery. He let go of his arm and opened the heavy door for the younger Hufflepuff to step out first while he was holding open the door with a slight grin. Both of their hair looked like a mess, but the Gryffindor would just comb through it with his fingers later as soon as the castle walls protected them from the gusts of wind.

As soon as the Hufflepuff would step out, the Gryffindor would close the door behind them and sigh in relief since the wind was not pulling at him anymore, slowly turning him into a block of ice with every freezing breeze. "C-Come on, l-let's go get downst-stairs, w-we could g-grab some h-hot chocolate f-from the kitchens", he told George, grinning mischievously at the other kid. He was sure there would be a house elf around, willing to give two freezing kids some special treatment. Alan knew, because it had worked many times before.
