Sean was a bit nervous making his way to the Great Hall, he had never done anything remotely close to bakery or decorating any type of pastry and didn't know exactly why he felt like trying to today. Since arriving at Hogwarts he found himself doing a lot of new things that he usually would avoid but he was changing little by little slowly getting more involved. He had decided to decorate some cupcakes and cookies today or at least attempt to, as he entered the Great Hall and saw all of the other students that had decided to also decorate some desserts he took a deep breath and made his way to a seat with what he wanted to decorate.
He stared at the cupcakes in front of him trying to figure out what he was going to do, looking over at the utensils wondering what some of them were for. He looked like a fish out of water and wondered if there was still time to leave before making a fool out of himself but he took a deep breath and started decorating a cupcake. He wasn't sure what he was doing but he used some yellow frosting and had covered the top of the first cupcake, it looked quite empty so he tried to find something he could add to it. He looked around and saw some green frosting and thought of something, he started carving little leaf shaped and added then around the cupcake. It wasn't much but he was expecting a lot worse from himself, he put the cupcake on a tray and started on the 3 other cupcakes. He kept the same idea but change the colors, he made a green, red and blue one - obviously inspired by the Hogwarts houses. While he worked he couldn't help but think about his life before Hogwarts and how boring he had found it. He would spend all his time reading or writing, never trying anything new by fear of being even more fun of by his peers but Hogwarts changed that, he now knew why he was so different from the kids back home and he becoming more himself every day. Sean would often get lost in his thoughts which made him seem a bit air headed sometimes. To his surprise, he was actually enjoying decorating these cupcakes, for once it didn't matter to him if what he did was perfect - it was refreshing to not feel the usual pressure he would put on himself.
Once he had finally finished the cupcakes it was time to start on the cookies which he also had 4 of. He was going to stick to the Hogwarts house theme since it seemed to be working out for him, but for the cookies he wanted to try and actually make the crests on them with the icing. He was probably being way over confident but might as well go all out and if he fails, it's ok. He took one of the cookies and stared by covering the top with yellow icing - he started with Hufflepuff because it was the crest he was the most familiar with being a Hufflepuff himself. Now was the tricky part, he started by making the outline of the crest in black icing as the Hufflepuff colors were yellow and black. He tried his best using one of the utensils to form the crest and once he was happy with it started on making the actual badger. He was going to use black and white icing to make the badger, he started by shaping the badger out of the black icing and add the white bit after. It didn't look great, but you could clearly recognize what it was which was a win in Sean's books.

Sugar. Margo actually licked her lips in excitement as she hurried towards the great hall. When she'd seen the announcement she'd barely been able to believe her luck- people were actually getting payed to decorate sweet treats. Cupcakes, cookies... it all sounded heavenly. Gris was making herself look even better in Margo's eyes, which was a feat in itself, but on this matter the prefect was being surprisingly generous. Hmm, she wondered if they'd have any blackberries, she hadn't tasted their rich flavour on her tongue for a while. Ah, this was going to be-
Wait.
Hadn't there been something on the announcement about not being able to actually eat the treats? Margo's mouth turned bitter at the thought. Was Gris dangling delightful, uneatable desserts in front of their eyes just for the fun of it? She didn't think she'd felt so disappointed since... well, since her brother had promised her a good argument yesterday evening and then mooched off instead, but that was beside the point. She'd heard the saying 'Tis better to have loved and lost than never loved at all.'[1] but in this case she wholeheartedly disagreed. Disappointment, especially when related to sugary heartache, stung, and she wished she could've prepared herself for the amount of self control this errand would take.
Was it possible she was being a bit dramatic? Well yes, Margo prided herself upon her fiery nature, and sometimes being theatrical was the only barrier between amusement and endless boredom. But it had gotten her all the way to the great hall, hadn't it? And she wasn't being overly dramatic- her stomach can't have been the only one that rumbled at the sight of all those mouthwatering desserts lining the tables. With the hundreds of candles above, it really was a sight for hungry eyes. I'll just have to distract myself somehow, Margo thought, staring up at the enchanted ceiling.
She'd heard that each flickering candle represented a Hogwarts student. Whether it was actually true or not was beside the point because she was already launching an internal discussion as to what part of the room she'd want to be in if she herself was a wax dripping entity. She'd obviously want to be on the Slytherin side- she had too much house pride to not reach that conclusion, but as to which conversations she'd want to listen in to she wasn't sure. Hearing exam students' stressed revision talk for days on end was definitely not high on the list, but perhaps it would be nice to listen to all the teachers' gossip about troublesome students- maybe she'd even come across her own name once in a while. She wouldn't want to be too high in the air though. Never would a soul hear her admit it but flying lessons were probably her least favourite part of the week. Clinging onto tree branches was one thing, but zooming around on a thin stick of wood high above the ground? Not Margo's idea of a fun.
Thankfully, flying was not a feat she often tried to pursue, and right now she only had to worry about concealing the noises of her hungry stomach... and finding a place to sit. She focused her gaze upon the least judgemental person she could find- a rather unthreatening looking boy who looked to be going for a house theme as decoration for some cupcakes and cookies.
"Hey there." Margo said boldly, hopefully not startling the boy who looked to be concentrating on piping out the Hufflepuff Crest onto a biscuit. "Lookin' good, matey. You new in these waters, 'cause I can't recall seeing you 'round?"
She paused. "This fellow pirate's called Margo, by the way. Reckon I could smuggle a little icing without being caught? I didn't have any lunch, you see." She confided, shaking her head. She didn't know why she'd gone for a pirate impression, but she valued being different more than almost anything else, so it was natural to take her own advice once in a while. She just hoped the boy didn't find it too strange.

Sean was making a few finishing touches on his first Hufflepuff cookie when he heard a voice come from beside him. It was a girl, he looked at her for a second with his emotionless look and listened to her introduce herself in what sounded like a pirate impression. He found it odd but found it rather amusing, the girl was interesting to say the least - he hadn't often been approached like this and wondered what he should say "Nice ta meet ya Margo, me name is Sean and I am a first year ye" he tried his best to sound like a pirate too but wasn't very good at it. He felt a bit nervous now, he had 3 other cookies to decorate and there was no way he could concentrate enough with someone trying to talk to him.
Sean wasn't a very socially skilled person, mostly stuck in books or observing things around him. He had gotten better since arriving at Hogwarts but he still found it challenging to seem friendly with his naturally cold demeanor. He tried his best to smile at Margo, "So ehm.. what are you going to decorate ?" his actual question was how come she came over to him, he didn't know her at all and usually people tend to think he was a bit odd because he was so silent all the time. He picked up the next cookie and started decorating, maybe she was just very friendly and felt bad that he was sitting alone ? Or maybe he was overthinking again.

@Sean HearthThe boy stared at Margo with a look she was all too familiar with. A least, she thought it was an emotionless facade, but for all she knew the boy could be screaming at her to leave him in peace from behind those grey-brown eyes. Oh well, it was too late to turn back now. Margo had already plonked herself down opposite the boy and was reaching for a biscuit. He seemed to be going for a house theme but Margo thought she'd be better off decorating her biscuit with something she didn't see every day. Why not continue with the theme she'd already laid down?
She carefully smeared some red icing over the top of the biscuit and peeked at the boy from under her eyelashes. Sean, he'd said his name was. A first year. But that was not the part she found so interesting. He too had tried to install some pirate undertones into his speech, and Margo felt a crooked smile stretch across her face at the thought. Her humour was appreciated by another being!
But maybe it would be unwise to be too distracting, she had sort of barged in after all. Unfortunately the boy looked happy in his own sugary world, and Margo once again felt the pangs of hunger. Sean should consider himself lucky that she was feeling particularly considerate.
"Aye, 'tis nice t'have made your acquaintance too, Cap'n." She tried to summon what she hoped was a friendly expression. "Thought I'd design meself a ships crew for company. Which one of those noble houses is yours anyways?"She pointed to the four colourful cupcakes.
After adding some white dots to her sugary friend's 'bandanna', Margo decided that she would remain silent for now. Whether it would remain comfortable and uninterrupted she did not know, but at least she could spend some of her time discreetly analysing the boy.

Sean looked at Margo who was sitting opposite him, he wasn't sure what to say until she started decorating a cookie and asked him what house he was in. He smiled as she had asked in a pirate manner again, and picked up the yellow cookie where he had made the Hufflepuff crest "I'm a first year Hufflepuff, you ?". He looked at the girl decorate, she seemed better at this than he was and he couldn't help but smile at the pirate faces. Who ever this girl was she was very intriguing, Sean found most people intriguing to be fair but he couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking. He continued decorating his cookie in the green and silver of Slytherin, he couldn't help but think that maybe he was supposed to be in that house or maybe Ravenclaw, he felt a bit different to the rest of the Hufflepuffs. He loved his house but couldn't help noticing the similarities he had with most of the green or blue students, he sighed to himself, there was no point in wondering about it, the sorting hat wouldn't make a mistake. He started making the shape of the snake and then put it on the cookie, it wasn't too bad for a beginner he thought.
Margo was working away in front of him, he looked at her a few times wondering what kind of person she was, what was her story ? Sean has always been a curious person and was very interested in people in general, he read a lot and even wrote from time to time.

Margo tried to hide her surprise. This guy didn't really have the whole 'buckets full of kindness' vibe going on at all. Not to mention the 'sweetly honest' stereotype that was given to most Hufflepuffs. To her, he seemed to have a few mysteries hidden underneath that fairly shy exterior, something which was rather unusual for a young badger. That wasn't a bad thing, though- not to Margo, at least. She was full of phrases like 'defy the stereotypes!' and 'down with social cliches!', so this boy had just taken a step upwards in her books.@Sean Hearth
"Are you happy with the ugly hat's decision?" She inquired curiously, the pirate act forgotten. She looked into the boy's eyes thoughtfully. What had happened in his past? Had he been to a muggle school or had he been taught magical theory from an early age by strict pureblood parents? In the end, Margo decided that she might as well ask. Usually she'd just make an assumption and wait for correction or confirmation. However, this often led to offence (she was just socially experimenting, for god's sake, no need to be so sensitive!) and she wasn't quite ready to let Sean's secrets go just yet.
"So, grow up in the wizarding world or the muggle world?"
Margo wondered if she was being too bold, and if Sean would think she was being judgemental about his blood status. Well if that was the case then he was wrong, she thought vehemently. Being a Slytherin didn't mean that her ulterior motive had to be more than innocent curiosity, though she vaguely wondered if it made her a Slytherin to have an ulterior motive in the first place. She frowned at herself in annoyance. She could be whatever she liked without thinking about whether it followed her house's values. Those were more guidelines than regulations anyway. She held pride in her house, and it didn't make her a bad person. For some reason unknown to even herself, she felt the need to show this boy the truth.
"I've been through the muggle system myself." She admitted, but paused suddenly, realising that the boy wasn't actually aware of her house yet. "That's my home you're crafting there." She pointed to his snake adorned cookie, turning back to her own pirate biscuits. She loved making faces, and set to work on a particularly cheeky pirate whilst wondering if Sean would judge her for her house. A part of her hoped he wouldn't, for there was no possibility of friendship if he did.

Sean was in the middle of perfecting his snake when Margo asked him a question nobody had ever asked him before, he almost wondered if she had read his mind but that wasn't possible he thought. He looked at her and for a second he debated whether or not he would be honest or just say he had no doubts about it at all but he went with the first option by principal "When I first learned about the usual traits people in my house have i did have some doubts... But I do value those traits a lot even if they aren't my own so I would say yes, I am happy. What about you ?" he realized that he had no idea what house she was in but houses didn't really mean much to Sean, or at least he had no preconceptions of them so he didn't judge anyone from their house. He knew that there were bad and good people everywhere and even after his research on the different houses his few did not change.
The topic of blood came up, Margo asked him if he came from the Wizarding world or the Muggle world which Sean didn't really care to admit, he was a good student and his blood didn't change anything. "I was brought up in the Muggle world too, both my parents are Muggles. I had no idea until I got my letter. He noticed how she specifically said Muggle system which he thought was a bit odd "So are your parents Muggles or Wizards ?". He was curious to know, it hadn't occurred to him that some wizarding families would still use the muggle system. Sean was still trying to shape the serpent when she made a remark that told him what house she was from. Margo was from Slytherin, the house from where most bad wizard come from Sean knew this but also knew that it didn't mean all Slytherins were bad. He had already met a few students from Slytherin all nicer than portrayed, of course there were the few less friendly but he could tell that she was one of the good ones. He looked at the snake he had made and showed it to her "What do you think ? I wouldn't want to butcher your emblem" he smiled at her, trying to make her see that it didn't matter to him.

Margo smiled. An actual smile. This was a rare event indeed. "I don't know... that honesty you just displayed? Well it seemed like a Hufflepuff trait to me. Besides, shouldn't we live lives by our goals and aims? It'd be boring otherwise." Who knew Hufflepuff and Slytherin notions could coincide so easily?@Sean Hearth
Margo looked back down at her band of pirates, smirking with satisfaction at the finished products. Maybe it was a good thing that they weren't allowed to eat them -- she doubted she'd have put as much effort in if they were. One of the pirates looked up at her with a stupid grin on his face and Margo mellowed a little. Perhaps it was better that their creations would be shared out equally. A little sweetness could lighten the mood and do the school some good. Of course, she mainly wanted to spread her art, none of that jazz about selflessness for strangers... gosh, was Sean's kindness rubbing off on her?
"My parents are wizards." Margo admitted. Why did she feel so much like a classic pureblood Slytherin? She wasn't a pureblood, for goodness sake. "But my grandmother is a muggle and she's one of the funniest, most magical people I know." Images of Winella White's mysterious predictions and nifty walking stick flooded her mind.
Why was she telling the boy these things? As bold as she could be, Margo kept her heart to herself, and these memories were much too close to her most vital organ for comfort.
"What do you think? I wouldn't want to butcher your emblem." Sean smiled at her.
Margo blinked. He obviously didn't care about her house at all. "It looks lovely." she smiled back.
Mayday! Mayday! Where was all this niceness coming from? She wasn't nice. Outgoing? Sure. Sarcastic? Definitely. But this niceness was new, and she was pretty sure she didn't like the strange, light feeling in her chest. With one last glance at her trusty pirates (for they wouldn't ambush her by being sweeter than sugar), Margo stood.
"See you around?" She mumbled before striding out of the Great Hall, pondering the strange interaction she had just adbruptly ended.

Sean smiled, it was kind of weird how he felt closer to this girl who on paper should have been the complete opposite of him than a lot of his housemates. "Hm I guess you're right, never thought of it like that" She seemed to be enjoying talking to him as much as he enjoyed talking to her.
"It looks lovely" Margo said when he asked what she thought of the snake he has made for the Slytherin cookie. He smiled at her, it was obviously not a master piece and she was probably just being nice but it was still a good feeling. She explained how her parents were both wizards but that her grandmother was a muggle. The way she talked about her was quite sweet, Sean didn't have any other family than his parents or at least he had never met anyone else from his family. He smiled at her "She must be really proud of you", he couldn't imagine someone not being proud of a girl like Margo. Sean had only met this girl an hour ago and he already felt comfortable talking to her which isn't easy for him.
While he made the finishing touches on his decorations, she suddenly stood up and mumbled something that sounded like see you around ? Sean wasn't quite sure what happened while he looked at her make her way out of the Great Hall. Did he do or say something to offend her ? He finished decorating and then also made his way out still wondering what happened to her.
