Azkaban prison is a tall, angular tower located on a very small island in the middle of the North Sea. It is both Unplottable and hidden from Muggles. The prison has many floors above sea level, and even a few dungeon floors below sea level. The prison no longer employs Dementors as guards, so there are no hooded, flying figures haunting the area. Instead, there is usually a torrential downpour of rain that provides the depressing and ominous feeling. Azkaban has an anti-apparition field around it, and the rocky unpredictable seas make visiting by boat unideal. Any form of flight in the area is prohibited (and the area is monitored closely). Prisoners are transported here through regulated portkeys, and visitors must apply to visit via the same method through the Ministry. [Note: young school children will not be approved as visitors, visitors must all be of age (17+) are usually direct family, Aurors, lawyers, etc]

Inside the entry area of the prison, visitors will have to hand over their wands so the guards can weigh them, then the wands are kept in a secure area during their visiting time. Prison guards and stationed Aurors are found on every level and around every corner, patrolling the various areas. There's one visiting area which is why visitors must apply for a date and time to visit, to prevent any overlap in visiting and limit any possible security breaches. This visiting area is on the same level as the entry area.

The cells themselves vary in quality and looks depending on where in the tower you are. Better conditions in the higher levels where the nonviolent criminals stay, and the more restricted and bare bones layouts at the bottom for murder and related crime. Criminals in the upper floors have a bit more freedom in that they have a cafeteria and library and jobs to carry out (like laundry). The lower you get in the tower, the more restricted prisoners are. Some prisoners are kept in their cells 24/7 and fed individually.

Azkaban is a magical prison made to contain people of various magical abilities. While there is no anti-magic field around the whole area (as that would leave guards defenseless), extra precautions are taken for prisoners who can cast wandlessly, prisoners who can transform (Animagi, werewolves), etc. For example, prisoners must wear Admonitors, which allow guards to monitor any attempted magic usage and identify those who may need to be monitored more closely.
