Great Lake
South of Hogwarts lies the Great Lake, a freshwater loch spanning half a mile in diameter. Its waters are included in the school's nature reserve, thus they host many magical beasts, some more amiable than others. Most famous among these is the giant squid, a more or less domesticated behemoth, whose tentacles might be spied basking in sunny shallows. Grindylows thrive here, waiting to nip the toes of any student that dares a dip. At the centre of the lake, deep down below, is rumoured to be a village of merfolk dwelling in the murk.
The water is not only brimming with monsters but also memories. After all, students first see the school while riding boats across its inky surface, sailing from the train station towards the tall spires of Hogwarts under the light of many lanterns. While it is customary for later years to take carriages to and from the castle, seventh-year students ride these same boats back to the station after they graduate. This ritualistic journey is the first and last memory of the school grounds most students will have.
These shores are a common space for leisure throughout the school year. Denizens of Hogwarts climb down the sloping hill to relax under the shade of scarce trees, cool their feet in the shallows, and enjoy the lakeside ambience. Visitors sprawl in the soft emerald grass, or perch atop one of many boulders dotting the landscape. Some squint out to distant shores, searching for that fabled grave on campus: the White Tomb, the final resting place of Albus Dumbledore. In harsher winters, the surface freezes until it looks like frosted glass. On cloudy days, typical of these Scottish highlands, the water is a mysteriously murky shade of green. At night, it is dark as pitch and frightfully frigid. If the sky is clear at sunrise or sunset, the mirror-like surface dances with all of its colours, a sublime reflection of fiery hues.
The Great Lake, like the school itself, hosts many mysteries and challenges for those who dare to look deep enough.
