It had been a stressful day, nothing in particular had gone wrong, but Kennedy found herself on edge. After all of her classes, she decided that maybe it was best to just sit down in the quiet library, and re read her favorite copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.Yes, she thought to herself, that seems like a good option. When she arrived, she sighed in relief to find that her favorite table in the library was open. It called to her like an old friend, even if she hadn't been at Hogwarts that long. Kennedy nestled into the chair, and flipped open the book to the last page she had been reading. Just as she was beginning to read about Golden Snidgets, a figure in front of her caught her eye. A girl stood across from her, behind the other chair. Kennedy flinched in surprise, no one had ever approached her at the library before.
"This seat is taken"
The girl dropped her book on the table and sat down. Kennedy froze in panic
What do I do, what do I do, What do I do? She though of what her brother would say, he would tell her she had to stand her ground and be brave, except Kennedy wasn't brace. She though of her father telling her to make friends in his letters, but Kennedy was always too scared to talk to anyone. Maybe the girl wasn't as rude as her tone suggested? Maybe this was a way Kennedy could actually talk to someone for once? After all the girl couldn't be so bad if she was reading in the library, bookworms were typically the friendly type. Right? Kennedy took a deep breath in and decided she was going to make the first move.
"So, what are you reading?"
Kennedy groaned on the inside, could she of asked a more stupid and obvious question? She should have just left when the girl had made it clear that Kennedy wasn't wanted.

"A book," The girl responded.
It took everything in Kennedy's willpower not to leave. She was embarrassed, and it was surely showing on her cheeks. It was all her fault, she blew her one chance at talking to someone, and asked a dumb question. She should have left the first time when the girl had made it clear she wasn't wanted. Kennedy felt stupid, and she hated feeling like she didn't know anything. Maybe she could forget the entire ordeal and just continue to read her book? Also, if Kennedy moved, she would give up the best spot in the entire library for bird watching! Yes, she would stay here but leave the girl alone. Just as Kennedy had made up her mind, the girl spoke,
"Newt Scamander is a great author"
It took a few seconds for Kennedy to process that the girl had spoken to her about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
"I-I'd agree. All his studies are amazing, although I do think he has skimmed over a few too many of the different magical bird species. There are so many interesting ones, and ordinary birds ought to be studied more too. I have a journal filled with all my personal studies, except I haven't gotten to see very many on the magical side yet since lots of them are really rare an-"
Kennedy stopped abruptly, she hadn't realized that she had been rambling, or her words were getting quicker by the second, but she did now.
"I'm' sorry, I-I know you don't care, I'll leave."
Kennedy stood up, embarrassed that she had lost control of her tongue. She grabbed her book and journal, then turned on her heel to leave.

Kennedy turned around. The only person in her 12 years of life who had ever asked about her research was her father. Anyone who knew her knew that she liked birds, but not many people knew what was inside her leather bound journal that she carried with her everywhere. Maybe the time to show someone was now?
"Not beasts really, birds, all sorts of them. And not only the magical ones, I've done a lot of studies on the muggle ones too." Kennedy too a deep breath in and opened her journal, showing it for the first time to someone her age. Inside were pages of her neat, slightly cursive handwriting, and many hand drawn illustrations. There were also odd sticky notes of many colors with fun facts and random notes for whenever there was no longer room left on a page. It was Kennedy's life's work, and she flipped the pages with delicate care. She knew every word she had written, and every picture she had drawn, they greeted her as an old friend. She didn't meet the girl's eyes, worried that if she did there would be a look of judgement from her. She was showing the girl an extension of her heart, and upon realizing how vulnerable she felt with a practical stranger, she snapped the journal shut. Kennedy composed herself, and this time her voice didn't shake when she asked a question.
"I was wondering if I could know your name?"

"Tes Cadell," The girl replied without looking at her, "You can call me Tessie if you'd like."
Kennedy felt as though she was being evaluated, and wasn't quite sure if it was a good or bad thing.
"Nice to meet you Tessie," She tried the name on her tongue, "I'm Kennedy Cheek."
As she glanced at the clock, she was surprised to find that the little library interaction had taken much longer than she thought, and she was about to be late to her next class.
"I'd better be off," Kennedy announced to the Tes, "I'll see you around."
Kennedy collected her items and left, maybe a little faster than she should have. It wasn't till she was out of Tes' sight that she felt a weight lift of her shoulders.
The analyzing eyes of the girl she had met in the library would go on to haunt her for the next week, making her think twice about anything she shared. Just the thought of Tes Cadell made Kennedy feel judged and uncomfortable in her own skin. Tes hadn't been outright mean during their interaction, maybe a little forward with her requests, but Kennedy got in her own head and was convinced that the girl had been laughing at her on the inside. Whether Tes had meant to make her feel like that or not, Kennedy knew for sure that she would never want to get on the girl's bad side.
