The study room was on the second floor. Rowan had followed the directions she'd scribbled on a napkin three days ago, which were now smudged beyond recognition. The ink had bled into the paper, turning "room 308" into something that looked like "room 3o something." She'd taken a guess. She always does, and turns out her guessing game was always spot on. The door was right ahead, she pushed it open.

Tables, lamps and a bunsh of students working or chatting in groups. Rowan glanced at the watch on her wrist, it was cheap brown leather, something you'd buy from a market stall. 3:18. The meeting was at 3. She sighed, boy she was late, again !

She always was, it was kind of her thing. Back at St.Brigids, the nuns even stopped punishing her for it. "That watch won't help you if you don't look at it, girl." Sister Anne, pinched and sour, watching Rowan wander into meals ten minutes after everyone else. Rowan never bothered explaining that she did look at it. She just didn't care what it said. Or, forgpt...to care

Rowan looked up, scanning the faces of students there. Looking for the familiar face she was supposed to meet for this assignement project. She sighed, she didn't mind group work, she just did't prefer it. It meant other people depending on her and vice verca, so it wasn't really her thing. She was neither a very trustworthy person nor was she the most trustful.

She looked around one last time thinking of asking someone. The thing is, she might or might not have forgotten her name.

Rowan wasn't one for names, or faces at that matter. It wasn't personal, Rowan didn't remember her own mother's birthday half the time. She'd remember details about a person, little things like how they trap their quill, how they flinch at certain mean jokes and then pretend it's fine. Names, names were just labels and sounds that anyone can have. It didn't matter.

The girl had probably been sitting here for twenty minutes, waiting, getting annoyed, checking her own watch, wondering if Rowan was going to show up at all.

Rowan would be annoyed too. She'd have left already. But some people were patient. Some people waited.

She kept walking. At the back, near the window, a girl with dark hair. Rowan sat down.

She glanced at her watch one more time. 3:21.

"I'm late, sorry" she said. "And I forgot your name. Sorry again."

⋆𐙚₊˚⊹♡ Ophelia head snapped up when she heard a voice, looking up at the girl. A small, bright smile appeared on her face when Rowan sat down, her expression open and unguarded. She seemed like she didn’t really care that her partner was late. She closed her book with an flowy motion, her smile widening ever so slightly.

“Oh! Hey!” She said cheerfully, a joyful expression gracing her features. “Oh no, really. It’s completely okay.” She gave a little laugh, light and genuine. “Honestly, time kind of… stops meaning things in study rooms. I’ve been here, but also not really here if that makes sense.” She laughs softly, a bit awkwardly. She then paused and toyed with a loose strand of her hair. “Okay, nevermind. Forget I said that.” She chuckled nervously.

“Oh, and I’m Ophelia. Don’t worry about forgetting. Names are not that important, they don’t define a person.”

She adjusted the stack of books in front of her, spreading some textbooks she gathered out on the table. “While I was waiting, I kind of just skimmed and jotted things down. I hadn’t done much yet.” She added, tone reassuring. “So you didn’t miss anything important.“

There was an easy optimism in the way she spoke, like she believed that there wasn’t truly anything worth worrying about in this world.

“Honestly, I’m just glad we get to work together. I find that working in groups of people makes the project a lot more fun!”

She glanced down at her notes, then back up again, eyes bright with interest. “What do you wanna do first? We can start wherever you’re most comfortable! Talking it through, splitting sections, or even just figuring out what we don’t want to do first.” A small laugh followed. “That’s sometimes the easiest part of doing work…”

Rowan stood there for a second, watching the girl talk. And talk. And talk.

Brilliant. Rowan fought the urge to sigh and roll her eyes and instead smiled. That weird large smile that never quite reached her eyes.

Hufflepuff, no one else talks this much.

“Oh, and I’m Ophelia. Don’t worry about forgetting. Names are not that important, they don’t define a person.” Said the girl.

Names are not that important, they don’t define a person.

That's... actually kind of true. And also exactly the kind of thing someone says to make you feel better about forgetting their name.

"Right. I'm Rowan ! Vexeley."

“Honestly, I’m just glad we get to work together. I find that working in groups of people makes the project a lot more fun!”

Is she for real ?

Rowan's eyebrow twitched. No one's glad to be her, she thought, that's not a thing. And since when was work and assignements synonym to fun ? Did she like spending hours in front of a parchment paper in a study room ? If she did, Rowan thought, she must have serious problems .

She glanced at the stack of textbooks on the table. Rowan could tell she was the studious student type of person. She probably has a system for her systems. I bet she wakes up excited about things. I bet she actually likes mornings. What's that like?

"You didn't do anything yet," she said, glancing at the organized notes, the stacked textbooks. Her eyebrow quirked. "That's a lot of books for someone who hasn't done anything. Were you just... carrying them around? For emotional support?"

The girl was still smiling. Still bright. Still acting like Rowan's lateness was fine. Like she was happy to be here. No one was happy to have group work with Rowan. Technically, she was a Ravenclaw. Which most people assumed meant long hours of studying and grinding and her nose being always in books.

Rowan had always found that a little funny. Right now, the only thing she wanted her nose to be in was her pillow back at her dorm.

She was intelligent, no one could deny that, but studying had never been her thing. Rowan liked understanding things, figuring them out quickly, seeing the pattern in them. Rvaenclaws liked learning thing while Rowan liked knowing them. Those were two completely different things.

The girl was still smiling and rattling on with her cheerful optimistic voice. Rowan was almost blinded by the sunlight that radiated from her.

Optimistic people are exhausting.

Not because they were bad people, if anything, they were usually the opposite. But they had this strange habit of acting like everything was simple and good and manageable, and Rowan had never quite believed the world worked that way. She wasn't a pessimist per say, that was the thing with labels. People threw them around like they meant anything at all. Rowan has just spent most of her life seeing things go wrong, people leaving and kindness coming with invisible price tags. Calling Rowan a pessimist was like calling a person paranoid for locking their door at night. She wasn't assuming the worst, she was just prepared for it and indifferent about it. It didn't mean she wanted things to go bad, It just meant she wasn't surprised when they did. There was a difference between expecting the worst and simply not being disappointed by it.

"Well then," She said as she took out a quill from her bag on the floor." Honestly? I don't care what we do first or last. You seem like a planner. Plan something. I'll nod and agree and then do whatever I want anyway. That's how partnerships work, right?"
