When Ruka returned her smile her heart lept with joy that he would stay a little bit longer. They hadn't had many pleasant and light interactions so him sticking around the pool party gave an opportunity for that to change. As she talked to Astrea she noticed him being hoisted in by Jack but shrugged it off, and refocused to give the beautiful Slytherin all of her attention. She pulled herself up onto the room to be able to better talk to her, laying her head on crossed arms still bobbing every now and again as her body moved with the water.

"I think the short hair suits you, not that you didn't look amazing with long hair... but the short hair frames your face really nicely. Especially with the baby's breath. It's a nice contrast. You are a breath of fresh air after all." She giggled, she couldn't help but compliment someone as regal and beautiful as Astrea, someone who had become someone easy to talk to despite the sense of intimidating air around her that kept Willow on her toes.

While her blush didn't intensify it didn't dissipate from her face either at the compliment from the girl in front of her. "Ah, thank you. Daisies are my second favorite flower, so I couldn't resist. Your outfit is quite cute as well, I love the vintage look to it." Willow had always been a fan of vintage fashion but never knew how to style it quite as well as the pastels that overflowed her closet.

Just as she was about to ask something else of Astrea she saw a panicked Jack leap out of the pool, seemingly to have a breakdown. She hesitated, wondering if she should get involved because her knowledge of Jack was really next to nothing about how to help him in these situations. Her hesitation was overcome though with the remembrance of the fact that he just a couple weeks ago helped her through her own panic. While her small limbs struggled to climb in and out of the pool she managed to do so after a couple tries, hoisting herself up and out. She quickly tied her hair back into a ponytail since it was a time of great focus and tact.

An apology to Astrea spilled out of her mouth for ditching the middle of their conversation and rushed over to Jack catching him saying something about him being Pan. She didn't know much about the half goat God, but she knew there was more to him than just panic and she tried to speak to that. She stayed a decent distance away to where if he wanted her to leave she would get up and go, but if he didn't distinctly protest she would stay with him, without crowding him. "Hey, Pan didn't just bring panic he also brought beautiful music with him as well. He's associated with woodlands and nature, a peaceful environment. He wasn't all bad, just like you're not half bad yourself." She tried to bring a joke in, hoping it wouldn't utterly fail. "People flocked to you today Jack, no one ran. You brought joy to a whole bunch of us today, none of us are running from you." Granted, she was unaware Ruka's entire reaction to Jack dragging him in the water but she was doing the best she could under the circumstances she pushed herself into.

Grace was enjoying the warm water as @Jack Burnett kept making jokes, she laughed along with him, but then Jack started sobbing, Grace’s eyes widened as she went over to him “Jack! Are you okay!?” she worried, the grass stuck to her wet feet, Grace smiled at him comfortably, “You probably want some time alone, I’ll go...” Grace walked back into the pool, wiped the grass off of her feet, and slipped back in, the warm water made the coldness of the day dissolve into warmness. Grace swam over to @Savannah Griffis and then turned to @Adohiro Moira “Sorry about that” she laughed, throwing her hair back “So, anyways, I’d like to join the Chicken Fight! Me and my twin brother were the best at it back at home!” Grace smiled at Adohiro, her blue eyes glinting in the light of the water, she really loved this day, everybody was in a great mood, laughing, making jokes, okay, maybe not everyone, but most people, Grace looked at Savannah and said “Wanna chicken fight? I’ll got on your shoulders since I’m shorter” it was true, Grace was very short, she was up to Savannah’s shoulders, Grace waited for a sign from Savannah as a yes.

Mentioning @Willow Anderson

Ruka hummed thoughtfully when Jack pointed out that even people who knew a lot about Greek Mythology didn't often know about the God Pan. That seemed strange to him; God of the Wild, worshipped far from the cities, ruling over Shepherds and hunters. It was the God his father had talked most about. Maybe it was because he had grown up in the midst of nature that this God in particular had been deemed so important by his father.

Either way, he didn't really have the opportunity to say much else about that as Jack drifted off like he'd decided it wasn't a good topic to get hung up on. Could it have been Ruka's own sorrow that kept killing off all those conversations? Was it at all possible that it was his own fault that Jack was looking at him like there was something wrong between them? Something that wasn't usually there, that made interaction more difficult than it usually was?

A small ball of self-loathing settled in his chest as he mulled it over in his head. It had to be difficult for Jack to be here with him and try to lift that cloud away from his thoughts, rather than just enjoying himself in the pool like he had probably planned to from the start. And yet, here he was, holding Ruka's hand and squeezing it encouragingly every once in a while, focusing all his attention on the Gryffindor like it was the most important thing out of everything else that was happening around them.

Ruka suddenly felt horrible about putting him into that situation.

Still, when Jack asked him why he was leaving in that strangled tone of voice, there was a flicker of hope inside him. Something that made him feel like Jack wanted him to be there, to stay with him, despite the fact that he wasn't a great conversational partner that day, and he was dragging some horribly anxious energy around with him.

It made him determined to stick around, even if only for a few minutes, just until Jack found something or someone else to focus his attention on. Something or someone more interesting than Ruka.

That moment hadn't come yet, as Jack hoisted him onto his back the second Willow had turned her back on him, and the two of them found themselves in the water, with Ruka clinging to the Slytherin for dear life. It was an unexpected situation he had found himself in, but the more he focused his attention on Jack, the calmer he started to feel.

The other boy wasn't going to let go of him, wouldn't do anything to put him in a frightful situation like that.

He trusted Jack with every fibre in his body.

What he hadn't considered, however, was the fact that he had never outright told the Slytherin about the fact that he didn't know how to swim, and there was a good chance that Jack hadn't picked up on the clues he had given him, too embarrassed to actually admit to it out loud amongst all those kids who seemed so comfortable and free-spirited in the water.
It was something he only thought about when he felt Jack's body tensing up against him after he had asked to not be let go, dread filling his lungs as he clutched to the other boy even more tightly than before.

He wasn't sure what was happening exactly, had squeezed his eyes shut for a moment as Jack was seemingly struggling to get to the pool's edge as quickly as he could.
With Ruka on Jack's back, holding on became a difficult task, so as the Slytherin hoisted himself out of the pool and fell on all fours onto the grass, Ruka tumbled off his back with a small Oof puffing from his lips.

Feeling disoriented for just a moment, the Gryffindor blinked in slight confusion over what had just happened, his limbs feeling heavy under the weight of his wet clothes as he tried to crawl closer to where the Slytherin had curled up on the ground with manic giggles and sobs that made Ruka's chest contract painfully as he listened to them.

The words he'd been saying were like a punch to his gut, forcing the air out of Ruka's lungs as he knelt by the Slytherin's side, one hand coming up to carefully hover over Jack's scarred back as if unsure if he was allowed to touch him or not.

What did he mean when he said that habits weren't easy to break? What was he talking about when he said he wanted to change?

Glancing back at the pool one more time, Ruka bit his lip once more as he tried to let their conversation pass him by again. There had been a different energy coming from Jack today, something light and warm, almost eager to connect with the people flocking to his little Pool Party. In talking to Ruka there had been teasing banter, but conversation had ended at the slightest sign of the Gryffindor displaying any sort of discomfort which was unusual for someone who liked to pick and prod at subjects until he got down to the core of it.

As much as Ruka had appreciated the fact that Jack hadn't pushed him for more and better explanations earlier on in their conversation, maybe he should have seen it as the first red flag signalling that there was something going on inside the Slytherin that he was struggling with.

"Jack," he said gently, but before he could continue anything else, there was another voice trying to help the Slytherin out of this manic breakdown he was seemingly experiencing. Ruka looked to the side to see Willow close by, and for a second he could feel himself trembling with anger at her for weaselling her way into this situation that she understood nothing about, but the feeling vanished as quickly as it came.

She probably just wanted to help the same way he and Jack and tried to help her at Opeila's birthday party. He couldn't exactly be upset about that, could he?

Still, something inside him felt a bit of annoyance at the fact that she had diverted his attention from Jack in the first place, when the curled up boy sobbing into the grass really needed it far more than she did, so with some new found determination, Ruka shuffled marginally closer to Jack, hand still hovering over his back. "Jack," he repeated, voice soft and gentle. "I'm gonna touch you now, yeah? It's just me." He slowly let his hand come down on the boy's back, a comforting brush up his spine to rest between his shoulder blades for a moment.

The sobs wrecking through the younger boy's body fractured Ruka's heart into tiny pieces that he could almost feel piercing his lungs with every breath he took. Was this his fault? Was he the reason for Jack's current state? Had he said something? Done something?

He wanted to add on to Willow's words about how Pan didn't only inflict Panic on people, but something gave him the feeling that that wasn't the core problem of the situation, so instead he tried to focus his attention on grounding touches as he moved his hand slowly from Jack's back to one of the Slytherin's own currently pulling at his hair in what Ruka recognised from himself as a forlorn, helpless gesture.

He gently eased Jack's fingers from his hair to try and prevent him from hurting himself that way, then wrapped the other boy's left hand tightly in both of his own for a moment. He wished he knew how he could stop this manic mix of giggles and sobs, and a part of him just wanted to wrap himself around Jack and hug him until things felt better again, but he was too afraid of making everything worse should he crowd the Slytherin too much.

All he could really do was be there to help picking up the pieces as they were steadily crumbling onto the wet grass beneath Jack's trembling form.

"I'm not running at the sight of you," he said lightly, a small smile tugging on his lips as he squeezed the other boy's hand reassuringly, as if to show him some kind of confirmation that he really wasn't intending on going anywhere. "And you've definitely never filled me with dread and fear." He chuckled as if the mere suggestion was unthinkable. If anything, Jack was the only one who could rid him of dread and fear at all times.

Ruka shook his head to himself as he shuffled even closer to Jack until his soaked through clothes were practically pressing against the other boy's side. "At least not while you were around." His voice was laced with a slight hint of teasing as he said the words, just a tiny jab at the fact that he'd been terrified while Jack had been avoiding him, a sentiment to the fact that, in Ruka's opinion, everything was alright as long as the other boy at least stuck around him.

One of his hands slowly let go of the Slytherin's, slowly and gently moving to Jack's shoulder to give it a small squeeze, almost as if urging him to let himself be moved into a hug if he was ready for that kind of contact.

At least, Ruka thought as he fixed teary eyes on the back of Jack's head, he really couldn't care less about the amount of people vaguely existing outside of the two of them anymore now.

It seemed she had arrived late, she barely knew people, no wonders why she hadn’t found out about the party Jack Burnett was hosting. Her stay at Hogwarts could be resumed on going to classes and spending never ending hours at the library. When she approached to the pool wearing her yellow swimsuit she spot a boy lying on the ground. She was shocked her eyes widened as she almost fell into the ground, she was shocked. Her awkward expression had quickly changed into shock, she walked backwards, and realized that the boy lying on the ground was Jack. She had previously seen him in the Great Hall, but his bright smile could not be compared to the way he looked now. He lied hopelessly, covering his face, lying on the stamp ground.

Her face turned to the people in the pool, she looked at them. Her expression denoted horror. She couldn’t speak, what had happened? She knew it was an awful idea to come. She had made up her mind and found enough courage to get to the party, but now, now that she saw Jack she was terrified. She tried to speak, but words did not come out, she tried to look at the others again, but she couldn’t. She stood there hoping someone would speak, someone would come to help her. She disliked being seen as weak, but how couldn’t she react this was? This was her first party at Hogwarts, and this was the scene she was presented to.

Finally, she approached to the boy, she leaned over and said: “It is going to be fine.” She did not know him, she had never spoken to him before, she was sure he didn’t know who she was. However, she couldn’t just stand there and ignore him. She knew it was strange to say that to someone she didn’t know, but it was too late, she had already spoken.
She then looked back at the people in the pool, wondering what their reaction would be.

Jack thought he heard Willow trying to talk to him about Pan. He didn't realize it was him she was talking to until she compared Pan to Jack directly, referring to him as 'yourself'. His suspicions were confirmed when she called him by his name, but the redhead grit his teeth and shut his eyes tight, shaking his head as he tugged harder at the roots of his hair.

"No, no, it wasn't me…" he said, his voice muffled with his chin tucked against his chest as he remained curled up on the ground. "Half these people don't even know me… They came for the pool. And how do you know that's not the reason I made it in the first place? Just for the attention?" He shook his head harder, speaking through gritted teeth. "You don't understand. You wouldn't; you have a ton of friends. No one sees me…"

He tried to take deeper breaths as his hyperventilation only caused him to get gradually more dizzy and light-headed. It wouldn't do for him to pass out here. What made him think this was okay? He had no right to ruin everyone's fun. Willow had been having a perfectly good time before Jack had begun to freak out with no warning. He had to go back to being okay so everyone else could, too.

Grace Mint's voice came and feebly went. Another girl's voice told him it was going to be fine, though Jack didn't recognize the speaker at all. He couldn't bring himself to look up to see who it was, even. All he could focus on was getting his breathing under control. Those, and his outward emotions.

Ruka said his name.

Ruka was being soft and gentle, like he had with Willow the day of Opeila's birthday party. He warned him about going to touch him and who it was, just like he had with Willow. He must have thought of Jack as such a weakling.

Allowing the second-year to pry his hands away from his hair, he then felt his left hand enveloped tightly in both of Ruka's. He felt the familiar scars and burns across them and his breathing almost began to speed up again. No, no…deep breaths… Deep breaths. Like Ruka's tapping. Tapping that had probably developed because of him.

Ruka was telling Jack he wasn't running at the sight of him. That he definitely never filled him with dread or fear. But then what was that in the pool? Why hadn't he told Jack what was bothering him, even if he had to take him aside to do so? Why had he been so willing to just turn away and leave instead?

The fire-dancer's additional comment of not having filled him with fear at least while he was around made Jack shudder. Oh, yes; how could he forget? Of course he was willing to leave. Jack had done the same to Ruka without a glance back. Without even having checked on how his concussion had healed or anything, he'd abandoned the other boy under the pretense of saying it was what was best for Ruka. Really, though? Had that been the true reason? Wasn't it because he was afraid for himself?

Coming to terms with a few things, Jack was finally able to breathe more steadily. He pushed himself off the ground to sit up and turned his head to look at the Gryffindor. Though his face was still wet, he no longer shed tears and his expression was neutral.

"I'm not what you need," he told the other boy. "I told myself I thought I could be, but I've only been holding you back. You need to make friends - actual friends, not the sort that hurt each other - and I never knew how to do that properly. Probably never will, either." He looked down at his scarred chest and shivered. "I'm…too scared."

With another deep, shuddering breath, Jack picked himself up off the ground. Then he got up and raised his arms before bowing, as if for a performance well done. "APRIL FOOLS!" he yelled, his face split into a huge grin. "False alarm! Sorry for the scare, there, folks," the first-year apologized, looking at the each of the girls who had attempted to comfort him one way or another.

"Heh…I think…I've tried to mingle enough for one day," he chuckled bitterly, glancing back at the pool and the various people in it. "Hey, Willow - happy April Fools' Day; You're in charge now," the Slytherin told her with a smirk. "I'll be back later in the evening to shrink this back to normal," he added, patting the side of the tin. "In the meantime, make sure to keep the party going." The boy ambled over to collect his towel, robes, and shoes. "I think I've already started to prune…"

Ruka could feel something heavy and dark filling his chest, like a cold hand wrapping itself around his heart as he listened to Jack's words in response to Willow. They were so desperate, the words of a lost child that didn't know where he belonged. For a second Ruka thought back on the way Jack had rubbed the back of his neck as he'd admitted that he hadn't expected there to be this many people showing up when he'd set up the pool.

Was he wrong in assuming that Jack had such an easy time making connections to people?

Even if they were mostly negative, Ruka had always looked at the Slytherin as someone who was sure of himself, extroverted, eager to interact with people, even if he ended up making them dislike him for some reason or another. He had never assumed Jack to be perfectly happy in his friendless existence, but he hadn't thought him to feel this invisible either.

Was this whole thing, this pool party, just an attempt and a failure to feel like a part of something? The same way Ruka was desperately trying to find his own place in this otherwise so well-oiled machine?

No one sees me.

Ruka felt like his insides were just crumbling at Jack's muffled words, like he was being torn apart by the sheer power of the other boy's voice

I see you, he wanted to say, wanted to yell it in the Slytherin's face. I know what it's like to be invisible.

But he didn't, just tried to remain calm as he did all he could to ground Jack with gentle touches and soothing words. It only vaguely seemed to help; The other boy didn't push him away, didn't fight the touch either, but it didn't seem like he was really helping in calming him down either. He didn't respond to Ruka's words, didn't seem to relax, just seemed to be focusing on his breathing, which... Which was probably the best thing for him to do.

It was selfish to expect Jack to focus on him when he should really be focusing on himself instead.

It took a while, but eventually Jack pushed himself off the ground, ignoring Ruka's physical encouragement to hug him completely to instead just turn to look at him with his tear-stained face, gone from sobbing and manic giggles to completely expressionless.

It somehow reminded him of Selim for a moment.

The words that followed made him hold his breath for a long moment, and he blinked rapidly to get rid of the tears that had been building in his eyes for a good long while already. "No," he just said quietly, the only reaction he could think of voicing in that moment, the only thing that was running through his mind.

All of this, everything Jack was saying, was wrong.

Didn't he know, didn't he realise that no matter how much Ruka tried to connect to other people, no matter how much he was trying to be a friend to them, the only person he really wanted to be around, no matter what, was Jack?
He clenched his hands into fists for a moment, biting his bottom lip insistently. That Jack was scared hadn't been a secret to him, not from the beginning, which was exactly why Ruka had done his best to never force him to label whatever kind of connection it was the two of them had, had never insisted on calling Jack a friend, had never wanted him to feel like he was obliged to stick around.

Needy, Selim's voice rang through his head, and he swallowed heavily. Was that it? Had he really demanded so much of Jack's attention that the other boy now felt too overwhelmed with how close they had gotten? Was that what scared him so much?

Or was it the fear of not being good enough as a friend, as a whatever, to stick around? The fear of trying to be something positive in Ruka's life and failing at it?

Whatever it was, Ruka didn't have the time to say anything else, because just as he opened his mouth, Jack had gotten himself off the Ground to announce his little scene to be nothing but an April's Fools Joke, like his face wasn't still blotchy with tears, like Ruka hadn't felt him trembling under his hands mere moments ago.

While he wanted to feel angry at Jack for the way he was running from his own mind like this, all Ruka could really feel was an aching in his chest, and a longing to fix whatever broken pieces the other boy was hiding inside himself.

No, this wasn't good enough. It wouldn't do.

Scrambling off the ground - with some difficulty due to his wet clothes - he hurried after Jack, giving him the time to collect his stuff before he went to firmly grab the other boy's shoulder, just for a second to let him know that he wasn't going to be able to shake him, that he wasn't going to go anywhere, not like this.

"Come with me," he said, voice a little shaky and scratchy with emotional turmoil. "Away from people."

With that, he slowly steered Jack away from the pool without looking back at anybody else.

They really needed to talk.

He stood close to George and Jake now, the girl that had stood with them before Alan could reach them, had long been gone, sprinting away to enjoy the water and Alan looked like a fool for asking her something right as she left. George instantly greeted him back and gave him the information he asked for instead, without mentioning his failure. Alan quite appreciated that and frowned at him curiously. "Y-You did? How?", he asked not able to imagine from the top of his head what could have happened that required some kind of saving. But he was sure that he would not need to be wondering for long and that George would be willing to share the story of him saving the other girl from a broom.

He watched as George pulled out a treat from a bad, but quickly realized that while it was a treat, it was one that was supposed to be for Cadmus! Alan could not help but snort with laughter at the confusion and grinned at the boy in front of him. "I th-think you packed the w-wrong treats", he said as his laughter calmed down and he was being able to breather properly again. He did hope that the other boy took no offense by this and offered him an apologetic smile, before turning to Jake. "Y-Yeah, it's gonna be a-awesome! I a-am glad you two w-will go!", he announced and would probably without knowing so, calm down the young Hufflepuff's nerves. Alan at least hoped that the two of them would show up! He nodded at Jake, when he announced that he would need to go and change clothes and Alan assumed he wanted to go change into clothes more suitable for swimming than the ones he was currently wearing.

While Jake was gone to get changed, Alan faced the other Hufflepuff, now directing his focus completely on the boy. "W-Will you go into the water at a-all?", he asked curiously, tilting his head slightly. Alan was not sure whether he wanted to enter the pool anyway, but it did seem like the other kids had fun. He also did not really have any swim wear with him, but he could probably roll up his pant legs and get rid off the shoes to at least sit at the edge of the pool?

The peace and quiet soon was interrupted when he heard the panicked splashing of water and turned his head to see what was happening. Jack was hoisting himself out of the pool, collapsing on the ground in what seemed like panic. Alan was not close enough to see exactly what was happening or hear anything what was being said, but he soon could see both Willow and Ruka by his side in what seemed like an attempt to comfort the guy. Alan actually did not know much about him and was not on the best side with him, but even he felt worried about the boy. Someone who had no qualms cussing him out in the middle of the street was now crumpled on the ground and Alan wondered what possibly could have led to this change. Soon after however the boy got up, putting up a facade and pretending this all had just been a prank, but something nagged at Alan, telling him that there was no way that this was true. He had seen Jack act this emotional before and it was at the tea party. With a frown Alan turned back to George, hoping that the other might have heard more than he did, "D-Do you k-know what this w-was about?", he asked confused, worried about the host of this pool party, but Ruka seemed right by his side and Alan did not think it would be a good idea to step in. After all Jack did not seem to like him at all! Ruka and Jack would leave the scene, or well, Ruka seemed to lead the taller student away which in another situation might have looked ironic, but at the moment it simply concerned the Gryffindor.

Once Jake returned, Alan smiled even though he was still a bit concerned about the situation that just took place, but could not help but chuckle slightly at Jake's innocent claim. "A-As long as y-you don't rollick a-about too m-much, you sh-should be fine", he told the younger kid, correcting him kindly. He hoped that the kid was not bothered by him correcting him on this idea or worry, but he wanted the kid to enjoy himself.

"Sure we can do the game. See if anyone is interested, Grace. It seems like the other students want to do other things. Can you ask them for me?" He asked her and he heard her say she could get on his shoulders. He would give a nervous nod, he wondered if she wouldn't be too heavy. He was certainly not a weight lifter or a person who had fun in doing any sort of physical activity.  "Sure you can get on my shoulders." He would go into the water so Grace could have an easier time climbing onto his shoulders. It felt a bit weird and strange to be close to a pretty girl, but he would look away. "I am ready when you are. Just attack anyone I guess. How about we attack @Ruka Tân?" He would ask Grace. He glanced at the other people around the pool. It seemed like everyone was ignoring his idea which was no fun at all. He wished he could be more socially inept or at least be able to have a conversation without being too socially awkward. He wished he had more confidence in being a skilled conversationalist kind of person.

She stood there for a while, she had listened Jack and Ruka’s conversation, and she had looked at Jack with disgust when he announced it was all an “act.” She knew it wasn’t an act, she had seen him lying hopelessly on the ground, she had heard Ruka, and overall, she had felt the same way before, she once was the one lying on the ground. She stood expressionless on the same spot where she had talked to Jack, she felt ashamed, weak, now that Jack had announced it was all a joke, she was convinced everybody thought she was a fool. Now, she felt overwhelmed by the numerous new faces, people she had never seen before. She desperately searched for familiar faces, then she saw Adohiro.

She didn’t really know Adohiro; however, he sat next to her in the Charms class. She tried to look as strong as possible, but she was confused. What had just happened? She didn’t know how to react, what to do. She barely knew someone, she barely knew Adohiro, and she stood there looking weak. Making up her mind, she approached to Adohiro; she knew that leaving the party wasn’t an option, she would have seemed foolish, a girl lacking from honor. She entered the pool and look at him, then she said: “Hi, my name is Elisa; I seat next to you in the Charms class,” she had never properly introduced herself to Adohiro. She felt anxious, she thought everybody was looking at her, laughing. However, she still made her best not to look desperate, confused, overwhelmed. “What an amazing joke,” she muttered, wishing no one had heard her, now she knew she was angry, but she wouldn’t let her anger consume her.

Adohiro would be nervous when a young girl would approach him. He certainly did like to be paid attention too, but at times he felt very overwhelmed when people would approach him. He cast a glance at her and he gave a nod to her. He did remember seeing her in class but he hasn't introduced himself. "My name is Adohiro Moira. My first name means Peace Within Chaos." He would mention before he got annoyed or weird questions about what his name meant. It was a bit annoying at times, but he would grin and bear it. He would hear her mutter, he ho[ed she didn't say anything bad about him and he would turn his eyes away with a small blush on his cheeks. He was a bit embarrassed, maybe he should try to be better at communicating with people. "We were going to do the chicken fight pool game, would you like to join, Elisa?" He asked Elisa hoping she would agree. He didn't know if she would like these sort of physical games, she sure did look prim and proper and not someone who would be rolling around mud. But he guessed looks were not everything.
