"He was in the forest, looking to see the trees but none where there. / He found a girl. She found the Erlking."

𝕾leep - abstract, inky-black ichor. To visualise such a concept was a futile task. The witch thought it akin to when you’d press your hands to your eyes as a child and watch kaleidoscopic shapes form amid the abyssal darkness. Valour always thought it was a frivolous waste of time, spending half of one’s life unconscious. Yet, at the same time, there was a beauty to it. Floating into the ether, letting pure unfiltered subconscious thoughts materialise and crumble away.
𝕿he child was born with a terrible circadian rhythm, waking while the sun was past its prime and retiring for the day past the witching hour. Everything was simply more delightful when cast in the shroud of night. The adrenaline in anticipating the unknown. The irrational fear of what lingers just out of sight.
𝖁alour once thought her aversion to sleep was quaint - a character trait if anything. She would use those extra hours to devour literature, whilst her roommates Shakestra and Winfield slumbered peacefully. They would tear through extracurricular reading. Not getting ahead on any of their studies, by any means, no. Books on unsolved mysteries, macabre classics, and conspiratory tales. They took their chances drifting down the corridors past curfew, basking in the silence of the castle. Their sleepless nights were fruitfully spent; better than any daylight hour they could savour.
─── 𝖂𝖆𝖝𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝕲𝖎𝖇𝖇𝖔𝖚𝖘
𝕮harming as it was at first, their restless nights began to slip out of their control. Hours once spent rebelliously embarking on trips to the library and writing in her journal soon turned to paralytic boredom. Dull shadows settled beneath the witch's eyes as she'd lay awake at night, a corpse in her coffin waiting for the afterlife to steal her away. It did not come. No matter how much they would toss and turn, kicking off blankets and flipping over pillows, something constant buzzed beneath the surface. Khepri joined them on their night-time vigils, staring owlishly at the girl, until one day, even the feline found herself drifting off. It had become excruciating, watching every second tick by as mounting pressure built up in their skull.
𝕴t was not long before Valour gave up on the prospect of rest entirely. Forty-eight hours danced by, leaving them in a daze. Classes and peers seemed to faze through them; a ghost separated from its shell. Early signs of madness settled into her youthful features - a constant migraine murmuring in their ear, bloodshot skittish eyes and lips gnawed bloody from unease. Val did not feel right in her own skin. Sixty hours approached like an emergency siren. All that laid an eye on the witch could sense that something was deeply wrong.
─── 𝕱𝖎𝖗𝖘𝖙 𝕼𝖚𝖆𝖗𝖙𝖊𝖗
𝕱inally - a sleep-like death. Absolution. Valour dropped dead for over twelve hours one fateful Monday. She went missing to the world, which kept spinning as usual in her absence. Her professors hardly bat an eye as she vanished from every class that day, her classmates only sparing a brief glance at her empty seat. It wasn’t unfathomable that the child would simply bunk off. If only someone had noticed. Spared them.
𝕭ehind Valour’s eyelids, all hell broke open beneath her feet. They were not one to fear the macabre but this. It was too far. Too much. Faces circled them in their sleep, or perhaps a lack thereof. Blurred, murky features, camouflaged in the dark to hide their inhumanity. One could only make out the whites of their eyes and rows of teeth. There was no telling where they were. Subsumed in dense forest, circling abandoned corridors, buried underground. Each corner turned was a new hell. Every new sight blinded them and sucked the air from their chest. Each scene was punctuated with violent whispers and tinnitus. The taste of gunmetal and blood. The smell of rot.
𝕱rom that day forth, Valour made a routine of waking up drenched in sweat, their hair sticking to their forehead like vines. Little crescent moons became permanently indented into the palms of their hands as they clenched their fists at night, paralysed against their will. The child began to hide from her older roommates, for fear that they would think of her as some incontinent child who still needed her mother to tuck her into bed. Perhaps she did need it. The thought of Kaavya made her heart ache worse than the palpitations from these nightmares. Valour decided it best not to dwell on the thought.
─── 𝖂𝖆𝖝𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝕮𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖈𝖊𝖓𝖙
𝕿hings began to progress even more unusually. These unsightly creatures soon bled into reality. In the dark corners of her periphery, Valour could swear they were always watching. Dawning on her when she lay unaware. Paranoia infected every aspect of her daily life, until attending simple classes became a Sisyphean task. Her absence continued to go unnoticed, her presence unmissed.
𝕹o matter how hard they tried now to stay awake, it seemed as though they fell repeatedly victim to the same cruel joke. No matter how much they begged, sleep possessed her often and involuntarily. And as if the horrors of her dreams were bad enough contained in the mental realm, these visions began to manifest themselves physically. Sleepwalking.
𝕴t started small. Falling asleep, wrapped up tight in the comfort of her own bed, Valour would awaken at her desk, quill gripped in her sweaty hands. She gained consciousness to the sight of her journal torn by vicious pen strokes and jagged illustrations of gnashing jaws and watching eyes. Soon, she found herself around the Slytherin Common Room, unconscious by the fireplace surrounded by horrified sixth years prodding her with their wands. Kind of them to check she was still alive, though the child began to pray otherwise. They soon resorted to tying their ankles to the posts of their bed, using their school ties and shoelaces to force herself in place. The sleeping beauty outsmarted her conscious counterpart time and time again. Resistance was futile.
─── 𝕹𝖊𝖜 𝕸𝖔𝖔𝖓
𝕺ne moonless night, the child drifted out of bed, eyes fluttering shut and rolling back into their sockets. This particular dream possessed them in a way that frightened them more than ever. An endless void. An infinite pool of blood. Valour waded their way through the viscous scarlet, screaming desperately for an exit - an escape. Meanwhile, their corporeal form crawled through their room, finding its way out of the common room and into the night.
𝕾he found herself beneath the sprawling night sky overlooking the courtyard. Valour crawled on her hands and knees, muddied and barefoot as though she had clawed her way out of her own grave. Her knees and the soles of her feet blossomed red from being scraped against cobblestone. All behind her eyes, she was living a nightmare. Weaving between trees as spiny long-limbed beings followed her like her own shadow. It was in moments like this - moments of anguish and desperation - that all their maturity and stoicism melted away. All that was left of them was a scared twelve-year-old girl, begging, crying for it to stop. They collapsed over a verdant patch of grass beside the water fountain, cheeks ruddy and glistening with tears. The child was a shuddering, hiccupping mess, babbling incoherently to anyone who could help them. In a desolate final plea, the witch rested their forehead to the damp earth and began to pray to any god that would listen.
"They were in the white wood, gamboling out to picnic. / In the light, leaves broke above. Then fell below."

"I was in the middle ground. / Looking to find the flowers in the garden."
𝕸any aeons ago, the moon went missing from the sky. It was an ebony night, soulless and starless when, as fate would have it, a girl was born.
𝕾he was a sickly creature - God's failed creation left in the hearth of the world, forgotten. Behind the moon's back, she rose. Borne of the earth, crawling up from the depths like something meant to stay buried. Soil-stained silk and bloody tears, she blended in with the pitch black. But a newborn, she struggled to see. The girl was blind, silvery irises watching blankly ahead. The gift of sight stolen from her by whatever cruel god who had forsaken the child.
𝕾taggering towards a fountain of silver, unicorn's blood pure and stolen, the girl plunged her head beneath the depths and breathed for the first time. Pain blossomed in her mind and blistered at her skin. She felt her form rupturing apart, her skull cracking open. She opened her eyes. This time, three. All of milky white, blinking rapidly as they adjusted to the dark. Two eyes blind, one gifted beyond the ordinary powers of vision.
𝕱alling to the ground beneath her feet, the girl began to cry. Her time in this world has been so fleeting, so full of pain. She had only just learned to live and yet she felt the earth beginning to swallow her whole, reclaiming her just as she had emerged from it only moments before.
𝕾uddenly, the brewing storm clouds above parted, revealing the fugitive of the night sky. A full moon. The girl’s three eyes widened in fear as the giant above seemed to wobble uncertainly. Could it be? Surely not.
𝕿he moon began to glimmer, as though brimming with tears, moved by the girl's pain. Her desperation to live, her adoration of the earth. She decided to pay the girl a visit. Our grave-borne scion gasped as the heavenly body fell from the sky, enveloped in biblical flames. She plunged to the ground, a blinding light emanating from every crater and mountain on the moon's surface. The three-eyed girl shielded her eyes in fear. Was this divine retribution? Punishment for daring to exist? Was she not meant to be here?
𝖂hen she opened her eyes, she did not find a glowing orb, but a hazy fog that rolled out across the cobbled stone. There stood a girl, doll-like and serene, with cascading aureate hair. She was robed in silks woven from the very stars that seemed missing in the sky, opulent against the muddied black of the ghost girl's dress. She stepped softly towards the wraith, arms benevolently outstretched.
𝕾eeing the tears that poured from the corpse's eyes three, pearly and confused, the moon girl began to cry all the same. Her heart filled with the terror and love the girl before her felt, only blessed by the earth's kiss for a fraction of the moon's primordial existence. The moon took the girls face in hand, caressing away her tears and whispering.
"𝕮ursed revenant. My sister in sin, as the earth is to the moon. Ailed, we are the same. Our meeting was long foretold."
"Wearying of the hate me, hate me not. / Wait, they forgot. / Woe, oh, the rot."
