Ellaine lingered near one of the compartment doors inside one of the middle train carriages, her right hand fiddling the straps of her messenger bag, the other firmly enclosed around the handle of her trunk.
She had arrived minutes ago, having been Side-along Apparated into one of the Apparition points on the Platform with her mother. It had been practically deserted, save for the few families and anxious relatives scattered around here and there. Ellaine thought that she ought to have been more concerned, what with this completely new experience of boarding schools, but she reckoned that the shock would fade away soon. Perhaps a few days into the term. Another exhale passed through her mouth; Ellaine pushed opened the door, leaving behind the empty corridor.
The sight of the compartment greeted her eyes. Burgundy red, she noted fondly. The benches were deep burgundy, obviously well-cushioned, and still empty to boot! A smile lit up her face. ...She was going to have a good time.

A moment later, Ellaine was sitting in one of the benches, nearest to the windows, a book ─ The Moving Finger, Agatha Christie ─ held open in her hands as she burrowed back against the seat.
She waited. Waited for what, she didn't know.

To Be Found Waiting
Ellaine paused, her hands still in the middle of turning a page, before she looked up at the stranger who stood in front of the door. Her reddish hair fell past her shoulders, and her light brown eyes had a kind and strangely impish glint in them, a glimmer she had caught from the brief eye contact they had made. She looked— kind. Reflexively, a smile formed on her face, though Ellaine couldn’t really be sure it looked natural and not awkward.
She panicked a little as her mind had finished processing the question. How was she supposed to respond?
“Ah— Well, nice to meet you too? I’m Weatherby.” She paused, brows furrowing a little before repeating herself. “I mean, Ellaine. Ellaine Weatherby.”
Her eyes flickered towards her book, noting the page number before carefully placing it on top of the bag on her right. Ellaine vaguely tried to look for something to say, before her eyes flickered towards the trunk held in Artemisia’s hands. An idea went off in her head. Ellaine stood up, feeling decidedly odd after spending an hour sitting down. She offered her help, gesturing upwards at the overhead luggage rack where a single trunk was already placed upon.
“Would you like help with the trunk?”

@Artemisia Blackthorn I’m sorry it slipped my mind to tag you when I responded. Or would you rather I not tag you?

"Yes, thank you very much!"
said Artemisia, looking at her new acquaintance, Ellaine. She seemed like a character from the Muggle TV series her father loved so much. She really hoped she hadn't disturbed Ellaine too much, especially since it would have meant starting the acquaintance off on the wrong foot. The embarrassment that could be felt in the air was great and justified by the fact that they were probably both the first person the other had met on the Hogwarts Express. Her mom would probably have told her that she was terrible at making friends and that she should break the ice herself, so as not to seem like a shy and out of place girl. Despite this, Ellaine helped her push her trunk into the luggage rack and they managed the feat despite some difficulty fitting them together.
"So, you're Ellaine. And you were reading. A Muggle book. Sorry to interrupt you." Artemisia stopped speaking, then seemed to want to start again but didn't have the courage, swallowing her words. Stupid, stupid Artemisia, she said herself. Finally, she opened her mouth: "Are you scared about this first year? It's your first year too, isn't it? I'm not very good at socializing, but... would you like to be my friend? Or even just keep in communication, you know, after... after the sorting?"

Ellaine found that a smile had made their home on her face. She couldn't help it, but her new friend (and Merlin, if that thought didn't put her heart at ease) was endearing. It seemed as though she had trouble speaking as well, and suddenly Ellaine felt a bit less nervous for her own difficulty as she thought over the questions.
Yes! I accept? No, wait, I would love to be friends with— but that did not sound like her.
“Of course!” Ellaine said softly, and she slid her right thumb over into the wrist of her left, feeling for the pulse. Its beat was constant and steadying. Ellaine pulled away. “I, well, wasn't expecting to be able to make a friend so early on, but, I mean—”
Oh… that sounded awkward. Ellaine wanted to bury her face into her hands. “Yeah. We're going to be living in the same castle, anyway.” Ellaine still couldn’t imagine how it would be, to wake up and be surrounded by endless hallways and corridors (maybe not, but the sentiment still stands), and magic at her every step. Quite a turn from her life, surrounded as it was by modernity and non-magic-ness.
Just in case, Ellaine reached for the book sat by her side and held it out for Artemisia to see. Admittedly, she had done this because she wasn’t quite sure on what to do now. Maybe… she should ask what House she would like to be Sorted into? Ellaine glanced at Artemisia for a moment. That seemed like a normal thing to do. And Ellaine did want to know what her new friend would like to be.
“It’s my first year too, yeah.” A pause, and Ellaine went over her question hastily, almost too quick to hear. “Which House would you want to get sorted into?”

To Be Found Waiting
Artemisia was able to release a breath, after holding it during Ellaine's entire time of thought. Wow, she'd just made a new friend! It seemed unbelievable, yet there she was, real and in front oh her. And she'd just asked her a question. Artemisia had never really thought about which House she'd like to belong to, especially since the very fact of being a future witch seemed like a dream to her. She began to mentally review the Hogwarts Houses. Gryffindor, undoubtedly one of the most coveted, the House of the brave, of good friends, the one that, in the popular imagination, fights for good. Ravenclaw, the House of knowledge, of learning, made especially for bookworms. Hufflepuff, the House of good workers, of loyalty, integrity, and dedication. Finally, Slytherin, the House of ambition, of those who always strive to surpass their own best, to the point, sometimes, of falling into Evil... Artemisia forced herself to think, to think about what she would have chosen if she were in the Sorting Hat's place. Ravenclaw certainly wasn't for her. She'd never been a great scholar, thirsty for knowledge. Hufflepuff wasn't bad, but it required a dedication to work she wasn't born with, and she'd have to learn from scratch. Slytherin seemed interesting; Artemisia had always wanted to become important, and perhaps that House was the key to that... however, she could also recognize herself in the welcoming chaos of Gryffindor.
"Actually, I don't know. I think I'd like either Gryffindor or Slytherin," Artemisia told Ellaine. "And it's not because I don't like Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff... I just don't think I have what it takes to be in one... what about you?"

Slytherin or Gryffindor? thought Ellaine. Her eyes crinkled. It fit-- she rather thought that ambition and chivalry would suit her well.
“Me myself…? I’d probably end up in Hufflepuff.” This time, her answer came quick.
Gryffindor was out of the question. She was not daring, nor chivalrous, and her sense of morality and justice, though present and fully functional, didn’t really move her into action. Ravenclaw... Ellaine knew she did well in academics. Her parents had once constantly praised her grades-- that was, until it became an expected occurence. Ellaine liked learning things that interested her, yes, but she didn’t really do it for the sake of knowledge itself. She wouldn’t "thrive" in Ravenclaw. Nor Slytherin! Ellaine really wanted to be in Slytherin. Perhaps not the most traditional of choices. Her mother certainly hadn’t seemed that eager when she herself had spoken of the Houses, though to her credit she had hidden it well. But-- but! They were shrewd, pragmatic, and ambitious. Willing to do whatever it took (well, not all). She admired them. And she knew that hell would sooner freeze over before she’d ever get Sorted into Slytherin.
That left Hufflepuff. Ellaine did not consider herself hard-working, but-- as her brother had repeatedly tried to remind her, much to Ellaine’s consternation-- she did concede the point that she tended to spend longer hours for things that piqued her interest. Maybe that counted as hard-working? Patience, and loyalty, well; Ellaine certainly had those in spades.
“Not that there’s anything wrong with the others,” added Ellaine hastily, hands fiddling with the pointed edges of the book, “--I quite like Slytherin myself. It’s just-- just as you said.” Ellaine felt foolish to parrot her words, but that was the truth. “I don’t have what it takes to really be a Slytherin. And, well, I think you’d be great in Slytherin,” she added earnestly.
