I glanced down at my timetable as I walked through the corridors, holding the parchment loosely in one hand while weaving through the slow-moving crowd of students. My eyes scanned the next line.
Potions.
That seemed… interesting. Maybe even fun.

I had learned about potions before during tutoring, of course-ingredients, properties, theory, the delicate balance required for certain brews, but I had never truly made many myself. Not properly, at least. Most of what I knew lived neatly in my head rather than in an actual cauldron.

Strangely enough, I felt something close to excitement. I couldn’t remember the last time a class had managed that.
Maybe potions had more to offer than I had originally assumed.

My pace quickened slightly as I moved through the corridors, the sound around me swelling into a constant buzz. Students filled every space, voices overlapping in loud chatter, whispered conversations between groups, the occasional shove as someone impatient tried to squeeze through the crowd. Everyone seemed to be rushing determined not to be late.

Eventually, the familiar stone passageways of the dungeons came into view.

They were darker here, quieter too. Being so close to the Slytherin common room, the atmosphere felt oddly more comfortable, less chaotic. The large crowds had thinned considerably, leaving only the echo of distant footsteps against the cold stone walls.

I pushed open the classroom door and stepped inside.

A few students were already present, scattered around the room at different potion stations. I paused for a moment, analysing the bets seat.

Without saying a word to anyone, I walked toward the station furthest from any real human presence.
Most of the tables were already partially occupied, but one at the very end of the room remained completely empty.

Perfect.

I pulled out the chair and sat down, setting my bag beside me with a quiet thud. After a moment, I reached inside and took out my potions manual, placing it neatly on the table as I flipped it open.

If today’s lesson was going to be worthwhile, I intended to be ready for it.

Ophelia was running down the corridors toward the dungeons, looking at the time every time she saw a clock in sight to make sure she wasn't late yet.

Normally, she wouldn't be in a hurry and would make sure to be in class at least five minutes earlier, in front of the classroom. This time, though, she'd gotten distracted because she saw a very beautiful cat in an abandoned corridor. In that moment, she did have some time left, so she carefully went over and scratched behind its ear as the small thing purred.

She might've been petting the creature for too long, because the next thing she knew was that she had two minutes to get to her class.

Panting and clutching her bag with one hand, she quickly walked inside the classroom and looked around to find an empty seat. She walked over there and saw that the seat next to her was already occupied by another person, her potions partner, a Slytherin girl with brown hair. She looks nice. She pet her bag down, finally unclenching it, took out her required materials and finally took her seat as the class started. Since she was to be partners with the girl for this lesson, or maybe even the future lessons, she decided to start a conversation, but she didn't know about what, so she decided to only greet her."Hi,"

A girl came panting suddenly into the classroom, the door swinging open behind her with a dull sound.

Did she just fight a dragon? I swear overreacting in this school...

Unphased, I tilted my head back toward the board again, my hand still supporting my chin.
Then I heard it.
A bag dropped next to my seat.
Of course.
The only free station in the class. The only reason why I picked it in the first place.
I closed my eyes , already irritated by the sudden movement beside me. The quiet focus I had managed to find a moment ago dissolved instantly.

I stayed quiet as she began placing her class materials on the desk. I had to move mine quickly before they came into contact with hers, sliding my parchment and inkwell a few inches away with a soft scrape across the wood. The last thing I needed was someone else's things mixing with my precious notes.

For a brief moment, silence settled again.
"Hi," the stranger said.

Why is she talking? She came in loudly enough already.

"Mhh," I replied without bothering to look at her.

I kept my eyes on the board, pretending my attention had never left it in the first place.
Honestly, Potions had a strong potential to become my favourite subject.

There was something satisfying about it, precise measurements, careful timing, the quiet bubbling of a cauldron...

Ophelia suppressed the urge to raise her eyebrows and roll her eyes. The girl seemed to have a problem with her already. She pursed her lips and, as the class started, started to take notes, writing the information in her notebook in bullet points.

When it was time for them to brew their own potions, each table was told to have the potions done at the end of the class. Each table... that meant Ophelia and the attitude girl had to work together.

She looked around at the rest of the potion stations; every other table's students had started to work and talk with each other. Ophelia glanced at the Slytherin, deciding not to start the conversation this time if she didn't want to talk.

On one hand, Ophelia felt bad for just assuming the girl had a problem with her; maybe she was in a bad mood or just had a bad day. On the other hand, she felt like neither of them could stand each other after the class had ended.

She sighed. Whatever. She put her notebook and pens in her bag and only left her book open, so that she could see the ingredients and the recipe. Ophelia bit her cheeks. What am I supposed to do now? I mean, we have to communicate to be able to get this done until the end of the lesson. But if she's not going to start the conversation, then neither am I.

I didn’t need to look at her to know she’d taken it personally. People always did, so sensitive.
The scratching of quills filled the room again as notes were taken.
Instructions now signalled potion making, a paractical.
Finally.
Chairs shifted as everyone stood. I didn’t move straight away. Instead, I read through the instructions a few time to get the perfect idea of how to make the potions.

I glanced briefly to my side.
Her.
Still there.
Each table... So we were paired. Unfortunate really.

Around us, everyone had already started working together but I didn’t say anything. If she wanted to talk, she could. I wasn’t about to waste energy forcing conversation with someone.
Silence stretched between us, which didn't bother me but I wanted to get this potion right, it wasn’t going to brew itself.

With a quiet exhale, I reached forward and pulled the book slightly closer, my fingers brushing the page just enough to steady it.

"We start with the heating of the liquid then cutting the ingredients," I said flatly, eyes still on the instructions rather than her. "Low heat. Not boiling."
Then I paused and looked at her, "Unless you plan on ruining it."

I stood, already moving toward the ingredients without waiting for a response, scanning the shelves and taking what I needed.
I came back and settled the ingredients near the cauldron

"You can cut those," I added, gesturing faintly toward the next set of ingredients. "Evenly and in small pieces. If you can manage it."

My tone didn’t change once, but I felt like she was going to get it wrong so I took hold of one of the ignredients and cut it perfectly,
"Like that."

Ophelia felt satisfied as Tes was the one to start talking, even if it was just giving instructions, although she must admit, Ophelia also felt like Tes thought of her as stupid.

Tes, Ophelia thought, had apparently always been 'superior' to others, to think that she could boss her around, too. Ophelia didn't want to make a scene, though, so, rolling her eyes, she just complied and cut the ingredients into small pieces. Just as small as Tes had demonstrated.

As she finished cutting the ingredients, she structured them neatly on the clean platter in order, so that the one needed first was closer to grab. Then, she continued to read the instructions in the book.

She gave Tes the ingredients so that she could put them in the cauldron, carefully, of course. Tes was precise. That would be the first word Ophelia was going to think of when someone mentioned her. Precise.

Tes didn't seem like the person who takes 'no' as an answer, nor like a person who has had everything handed to them on a golden platter. She was quiet, precise -again-, and good at what she did. Ophelia didn't want to admit the last one out loud, but she did think that Tes was great at schoolwork. Probably at other things as well.

Ophelia wondered what she did in her leisure time; what kind of hobbies she had. She also wondered if Potions was her favorite subject, she didn't see Tes being this accurate and strict in other subjects. Then again, she didn't really pay a lot of attention to how every other student was in the other subjects.

She followed instructions. That, at least, was something.
From the corner of my eye, I kept checjing the way she cut the ingredients, it was in a clean, manner. It wasn't rushed.

The liquid in the cauldron was already warming, the vapour rising surface level but rising as time went on.
Good.

I took the first set of ingredients from the cutting board without hesitation, dropping them in the cauldron at the exact moment the liquid reached the right temperature.
Perfect. A small smirk tugged at the side of my mouth, I loved potions.
An efficient, from myopinion, silence settled around us as she did her side of the preparation as I did mine.

I stirred slowly as my eyes flicked down to the book, then back to the cauldron, checking the colour, smell, temperature.

"Next ones," I said, holding my hand out slightly without looking at her, "Not all of them. The second group."

I trust she could follow basic instructions. I'm surprised really. Usually, people either talked too much or ruined the class trying to prove something they don't know. She hadn’t done either. Yet.
I let my words sit there for a moment before speaking again, my tone unchanged.
"You read ahead," I said, sliding the book over to her as I kept sitrring.
My eyes stayed on the cauldron as I adjusted the flame slightly lower. "I already know it by heart."
I figured she could also know the practical aspect of potion making instead of me doing all the work. But then again, I didn't want her to ruin it. So reading it would keep her occupied right?

I was right because only a few minutes later, the potion was brewed and the class ended in 2min.
I looked over Ophelia and gave her a nod of ackowledgment.
