It was said that the more you failed at something, the closer you got to your objective. Mahlioz had never really liked that sentiment. If she could just get to her objective without failing at all, it was obviously a much quicker process. Yet the universe, time and time again, seemed to be deciding that she should be reminded exactly how very helpful failure was. The stupid streak of lost duels and lost friends and lost hope wasn't enough - no, she also had to fail at casting one of the simplest spells of the third year curriculum.

Part of her wanted to blame the new Charms professor - alright, yeah, teachers changed, it was the same at their old Muggle school, but they had really like Professor Fresnel, and with all the Heads of House leaving too it was really starting to get a bit much. Of course it was when they were feeling most stressed that so much change had to happen. Of course. But they weren't an idiot, they had learned this charm much longer ago than when this Professor Townsend showed up, it was much more their own fault than hers.

It had started a good month ago, when she had been laying in her bed, trying to get some homework done. Surprising no one, her mind had been elsewhere, and she tried to Accio her mechanical pencil from her bag, just to play with it absentmindedly. Except the pencil didn't come. And her summoning spell had been unreliable at best since.

Clearly something was wrong. Mahlioz didn't have the space of mind to think about it. Whatever, they could find things the good old Muggle way, it didn't matter. They certainly weren't going to ask someone about it, they were supposed to be one of the best spellcasters. What would the Vipers say? No, she could figure it out, it would go away eventually.

But January rolled around, and after yet another holiday spent at Hogwarts trying to get the spell right, Mahlioz had to admit to herself that it was really not going to work and that she seriously needed some help. As horrible as that felt. Gods, she was useless, wasn't she? Useless to Reltyl, useless to herself- they stopped their train of mind. It wasn't too hard, considering how loud the rest of their thoughts were. What are you doing with your life? Where are you even going? Will mom and papa ever really care? Is Reltyl going to hate you forever?

So Mahlioz found themselves at the Charms classroom, knocking on the door of the professor they had nearly blamed for their problem in the first place. There was something about Professor Townsend that made Mahlioz wary. No, they wouldn't call her Kitty - they didn't do that with any other professors, it was weird and unprofessional. Perhaps that was what Americans did, but she was in Scotland now. It just all seemed so fake - the niceness, the over-smiling (how did that not hurt her jaw?), the bright colors, the femininity. Mahlioz knew she was judging this woman harshly, but did they even care anymore? Nothing about her seemed... earnest, natural.

Yet here the Slytherin was, swallowing her pride to ask for help with a dumb spell she already knew. She did still have the presence of mind not to show her dislike plainly - everyone deserved to be treated with respect, even if Mahlioz was peculiarly annoyed at them. To be fair, it was nearly impossible for the fourth year to sound annoyed anyway. But she wasn't going to beat around the subject or start any small talk that she assumed Professor Townsend would probably like. "Sorry for the bother, do you have some time? I've been having difficulties with a spell, I'm wondering if you might be able to help me. ...Specifically the Summoning Charm."

Charms was an interesting subject to teach. Honestly, Kitty found it interesting that she was a teacher — professor, even — at all.

It wasn’t that she was unqualified. Hogwarts was a school far too good with a far too long legacy to hire any first person they grabbed off the street, and Kitty knew damn well she was far from that. Outstanding scores during her own Ilvermorny, and later, university education, a knowledge of advanced abilities such as nonverbal magic and occlumency; then, as a cursebreaker, a good apprenticeship under her belt and a near perfect case record. Following her… departure from Gringotts, good references and a supervisor that had nothing to say but praise. She was a damn good candidate.

Still, Kitty had little formal teaching experience, mostly consisting of a summer camp she volunteered at during her university days and a semester spent as a TA. Both good pieces of experiences to have, sure — it meant she was pretty prepared for a lot of the chaos that came with younger kids, and the more administrative know-how that came with being at a proper institution — but Hogwarts remained a beast of its own, ruled by things she could not entirely predict, even as she slowly settled into a rhythm here.

However, the most unpredictable of things, as it turned out, was the calm. Kitty had been steeling herself to need to be putting out fires every other day, if not more frequently — but her first few days were extraordinarily peaceful. Outside of a rather unpleasant reunion with Samuel and a mild health issue on her first day, there were no huge crises to speak of so far. Quite the opposite, actually! She had been, so far, invited to tea by the librarian, met the Ravenclaw Head of House out in Hogsmeade, and even found a fellow muggle rock lover amongst one of her first year students.

Her tenure, instead, left her with a lot more downtime to think about her new job. Professor of Charms — a rather weighty title. One that carried respect, and legacy, especially in the halls of Hogwarts. Charms was about spell-casting, and the very basics of it, too: teaching kids about the importance of concentration, visualisation, clear incantations… It required Kitty to return to a lot of basics that had since become second-nature to her. The library had become a second office to her, a place she could spend hours pouring over magical theory she hadn’t brushed up on since her ADAPTs back at Ilvermorny.

Maybe it was too soon to say, but Kitty liked it, she discovered. Both getting to reconnect with a subject she was passionate about and just… teaching, in general.

Now, Kitty had just gotten herself lunch. A simple sandwich, considering food in Scotland had never been her particular favorite: fortunately, the house elves that manned the kitchens were absolutely lovely and did not mind whipping up something quick when she decided to haunt the room beneath the pear-painting. She stopped by the library, too — grabbed a copy of Study of Recent Developments in Wizardry and Notable Magical Names of Our Time, both books she was sure she had read either in Ilvermorny or University. Now, they were not there for extra credit or light reading, and they would hopefully make some upcoming classes a little more engaging.

Kitty barely got a chance to sit down in her newly-shipped-to-Hogwarts fuschia chair and open the books before the door to the Charms classroom opened. Putting her food back down onto its plate and wiping a crumb off her cheek, she gestured for the new arrival to come closer.

As they did, Kitty looked up at the student in front of her with a warm smile. She recognised them from one or two classes already. The Slytherin tie helped, though Kitty’s memory failed at immediately recalling what her name might have been. Something… M?

Sorry for the bother, do you have some time? I've been having difficulties with a spell, I'm wondering if you might be able to help me… Specifically the Summoning Charm.

Not a bother at all, please. This is what I’m here for, yeah?” Kitty replied as they finished talking. She stood up, reaching for her wand almost automatically. As much as she found she quite liked teaching — and this was a perfectly pleasant distraction from her books, really — it did certainly provide a lot less opportunities for getting her wand out of its case than Cursebreaking did. “Let me get you a chair– or, actually,” Kitty paused, looking back at the student with her best supportive smile. “If it’s Accio you’re struggling with, let me see you have a go at it first. That chair there, in the back — try and summon it here.
