Cursed? She thought she heard someone say that they thought the students who were bitten had been cursed. It was enough to break through her concentration and look around the room. More students had filed in and filled the cots. Moans, groans, and cries filled the room. Some of the students that were better off were attempting to help the nurse with his tasks, while another was-wait, what in Merlins name is that kid doing?-attempting to poke one of the female students with a needle?
She had noticed that Miss Jensen had finally arrived as well with the last of the students in the common room. The Head of House spoke with the nurse before looking around the room with what appeared to be concern, regret, dismay, and shame on her face.
"Excuse me. Miss Jensen. Can I ask you something?" She called out to their House Mother, hoping that she would be able to find the time to come over and provide some clarity to what she had heard others speaking. Although she was controlling the pain relatively well, it would not be much longer before her mind gave up all control to the liquid fire coursing through her veins.

He had never seen anything like this before, only rumors that he thought were exaggerations. Perhaps he should not have admitted his worry to the children that they were in fact cursed, but being the victims of such dark magics if anyone they should have the right to know. There was a rise in the level of panic both in the students as well as the nurse.
Was there enough for all of us?
The grim truth was no, there was not enough. He frowned and tried to choose his words. "Enough to help," he answered. Some of these kids had been bitten multiple times, others only once. He had enough of the potion to stop the spread, prevent it from reaching their hearts. Enough to dull the pain. But he feared that most of them would have physical scars to accompany their mental ones
He took the bottle and handed it off to @Bridget Collins. "Take a drink," he instructed the girl. "And get more," he instructed @Arlo Reynolds. "I need all of it," he clarified. There was never a need for much, but he had perhaps a dozen bottles, but he wished now he had more. A bottle each? That was likely the best he could do.
@Opeila Seilun was resting in another cot, conscious when a young boy would creep up from behind. Selim Faust, the boy had not done anything during the spider incursion and escaped with mostly mundane injuries. Allegedly the boy had a store of hypodermic needles, well at the very least hollow-bore needles attached to a syringe. He cleansed the needle rather than the skin of the girl, why? Well, that is hard to say. Needles were often sterile and the skin of a target was disinfected with an alcohol swab because there was a surplus of bacteria on the skin that could be introduced to a patient's bloodstream. Cellulitis or septicemia. Cleansing a needle only places the boy at risk for a stick injury.
@Selim Faust did not stab himself. He would aim for a darkened area of the girl's arm. He was aiming for a vein, why an assassin needed to know where veins were when arteries were the real relevant vessels is unknown. Vasculature often has a general same location but there is a great deal of variation. Visualization is essential, even practiced anesthesiologists, physicians and nurses would find it nearly impossible to not only hit a vein without seeing it but to also thread the needle into the vein. It would be pure luck if he hit a blood vessel.
The flesh has hard, as if it was burned. It looked like slate. He would have to exert abnormal force to have the needle push through the darkness. He was incredibly fortunate (and accurate) as the bevel tip of his needle found a blood vessel. A flash as the base of the syringe where the needle met the syringe.
He would have to pull back gently on the plunger with withdraw the blood, in this unlikely scenario where he did in fact find payload. As for poor Opelia, being poked with a needle through the dense, inflamed, cursed tissue would be incredibly painful. Something that Selim would not be able to sneak success in. [No roll, there is a 0% chance of her not noticing]
Of course, the nurse was occupied with other panicking students. He was not watching the deviant child. Out of the corner of his eye would he see the sickly youth creep into the room or come upon the vulnerable girl resting in anguish in a cot?
The withdrawal was not without risk to the girl. There was a reason people don't draw blood from legs. Risk of blood clots.
Yes, she would have a blood-clot form in her leg, a medical consequence of Selim's selfish act.It would not be something she would notice right away, it would be after this pain ended. After she healed. This deep pain in her leg. Potential damage to nerves and musculature. [A blood clot is what gave Dr. House a limp]
There was also a risk of infection.
She got lucky, she did not end up with an infection that could have proved life-threatening.
Professor @Hjørdis Jensen would enter the infirmary, asking what she can do to help. Asking for an update. The nurse's hands would be shaking as he administered the potion he had on hand, starting with Bridget. "Give the kids a swig. I swig of..." he was obviously flustered. "Thick Golden Potion," a strange choice he would explain immediately thereafter. "This is not an injury, it is some sort of curse," he announced. The trouble seemed to be permanently etched in his face. "The spread will stop," he did not verbalize the next part -- I think. He had no way of knowing for certain. "But it won't spread and" maybe "the pain will stop." He did not know if the pain was from the darkness or the fact that it was spreading. Considering the appearance, the dark areas appeared dead, a problem in and of itself. But dead tissue feels no pain. At least that was his logic.
He offer a sip from the bottle in his hand to @Caelan Stewart. "They said spiders, they might be the same spiders." It was before Nora's time, the Hufflepuff incident almost two years ago. In the Forbidden Forest there were these shadowy spiders that disappeared in response to the light. The students had not been bitten, however the forest took substantial damages from a rogue incendio blast. It was merely speculation, but there were injured students that night that babbled on about the darkness and the terrors that waited in the night. He had never heard of spiders with such features or venom. It was troublesome.
@Tyranni Whitethorn would approach Nora.

Interactions: Finley Vancleaf & Tyranni Whitethorn
Her heart sunk and shattered into a million pieces with a single word. Curse. Curse. Her expression remained blank, emotionless, almost cold looking. But inside, her heart was pounding fast, full of dread and fear. Any hope that he was joking had long gone. The look on his face, his fluster, the screaming children around them... Hjørdis could only hope this was a bad nightmare from which she would wake up from. But everyone knew that that was not the case.
The trouble etched onto Fin's face matched the trouble Hjørdis felt in her heart. This attack was far more than coincidental. It was far more than accident. She hoped, genuinely hoped beyond hope, that Griffith had spiders in his stables and accidentally let them loose. Or a kid had accidentally let them loose. Innocent, harmless spiders. That may have poisoned out of fear but cursed? That was a whole new level of darkness that these students did not need to go through, on top of everything else.
"R-right," She replied. It was about all she could muster. Hjørdis had not stuttered her words in as long as she could remember. But it came out that way before she could stop it. She took a bottle of the potion that he mentioned, scanning the room for anyone who had not been treated. All she could do right now was administer the potion and hope it worked. The spread had to stop. It had to. There was no choice in the matter. She could not allow her students to be cursed.
She would not allow it.
It didn't matter how long it took, Hjørdis would work doubly - no triply - as hard until she found a cure for this. She already was taking an increase in patrols but given the whole situation, that would need to double. There was no way she could risk this happening to more students. They needed a cure, quickly. They needed to prevent any more children from suffering like this. She had no idea how yet. Her heart was still panicking. But she knew she had to do whatever she could to figure it out. That much was certain.
She probably only managed to give one or two people a swig of the potion before she was called by one of the youngest students. A first year. The dread filled her heart even more. Eleven year olds were being cursed. It stung. Hjørdis quickly remembered that Tyranni had spoken to her briefly before making her own way to the wing. She had mentioned the pain, and being bitten. Oh God. Within an instant, Hjørdis had marched her way over to the girl, "Here, take a sip of this first." She offered, holding up the bottle for her. Assuming she did take a swig of the potion, Hjørdis would continue, "Now, what would you like to ask me?" The Head of House wanted to ask how the young Whitethorn was feeling but... it would take some time for the potion to work, if it worked at all that was. Hopefully this would buy some of that time.

For a moment, Illowy felt herself come to as she dared to open her eyes slightly. Every part of her felt so heavy, like hot lead was being pressed over top of her. She dare not move, even to twitch a finger for fear it would only aggravate the pain further; meaning the only thing she would see was whatever was in her immediate line of blurred vision.
Vaguely, she could make out the forms of adults running around the Hospital Wing, though she only recognized the silvery hair of her Head of House. Once in a while a form would pass her closer for her to recognize them as her other housemates. She could only assume everyone was in a panic, but she couldn't hear it well. Everything sounded so muffled, like a far away roar with the occasional word passing close enough to her slightly. The girl wanted to cry out for one of them to come help her, to do something to make this all stop, but that required strength she didn't have; not even enough for a small cry to try to validate how the burning was radiating into her very marrow. Even attempting to keep her breathing level and her eyes open felt herculean in effort.
Pale eyes sifted through the few forms she could see, straining to hear a familiar voice or see one of her friend up and about and okay. She wasn't sure if anyone else was terribly hurt, or what happened after she'd blacked out, but she hoped everyone else was okay.
Illowy did her best to keep her eyes open, but it felt like the hardest thing to do. Her body demanded her to give back in to sleep, but she was afraid. She feared if she let herself close her eyes, she might never open them again.
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

More people started to enter the Hospital Wing. Nico couldn't make clear who was who or what was what... She just felt very tired. As if she were paralyzed. Of course she wasn't. The energy she put in crying in pain had finally caught up to her, slowely letting her drift off in a restless slumber.
She thought of her parents. Her father that would pick her up and toss her around. Her mother screaming in the background as she got so scared that he would drop the young dhampir. Their precious little girl. A few drops of blood rolled down her cheeks again. Merlin, how she missed home. How she wished she was laying down in her sofy bed, surrounded by plushies of many sea creatures she saw in aquaria and pictures on the Internet. The Muggle world didn't seem so scary or chaotic anymore. As far as she knew, there were no big scary spiders that could turn your limbs black. As far as she knew, there were no spiders who were actively out to hurt children and eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Her mothers face came in view. The one of a woman who always looked her best. The matriarch who taught her how to look flawless and perfect. That effort was wasted now. The pale, porcelain look of her face was ruined. The huge amount of crying blood had washed away big bits of her foundation, uncovering her deadlooking, pale skin.
It didn't matter. Nico didn't care. She just wanted the pain to stop... and to go home.
You're gonna need a bigger boat

The potion was far from a cure, but it would soothe the pain and stop the spread. It was like a disease, an ever-growing, all-consuming fire. The children would have these black marks, reminiscent of marble where the spiders have bitten into them. These dark lines of deep, not-so-hidden poison that branched from the sites of insult. Finley was both relieved and terrified when he saw the potion work as he muttered, "it's back."
Looking at the unfortunate student with at least for now, a terrible black scar he would force a smile. It was fake and it was obvious, he was not a a good actor. The pain would be quelled, the darkness an aesthetic. "It will be fine," he lied. It would not be fine. "I am just going to need you to make sure that you come back once a week to get more of the potion for awhile" forever really but he did not want to say that. "The thick golden potion will prevent it from spreading until," there was no end date for this. If they stopped, the poison would reach their hearts and they would probably die. "We get a cure," that he had no idea how they would discover.
He would make his way over to @Illowy Magnard and pop the cork of a fresh bottle as he solemnly fed her a generous dose of the concoction. "Weekly," he repeated. There was a tone of pain in his voice.
@Hjørdis Jensen would busy herself in the Medical Wing briefly before she was distracted by one little girl in particular. "Hjørdis," he did not know her well enough to call her Nora, "I will be needing the bitten students back here weekly for another dose."
Unwittingly the nurse shared something important. Something that even he did not realize was 'special' and for the most part unknown. They had no reason to know, after all it never affected them. It was before Hjørdis Jensen's time and it happened to another house. The legacy of that incident was remembered more for the fire rather than the threat that came from the woods. He would feed @Nico Shymane the last of that bottle wordlessly. With a sigh, he would lie again. "It's all better," yes a turn of phrase. "Just come back in a weeks time for more." He did not ear non-compliance, the pain would be excruciating and this cure merely an intercession for them. Ultimately they would need to find a cure because they would not be able to live their lives like this.
Maiming Policy: I personally do not believe in player maiming. I have seen it abused in terrible ways by players who later cited it was their right to do something egregious and cruel for the purpose of ruining another player's roleplay experience. As such, I try to keep the bad to a minimum and offer eventual outs. This is a subplot hook for you players to seek a remedy - something that would cure a curse. Otherwise you would have to return weekly for more medicine and suffer agonizing pain if you dally. The goal is an eventual cure, but temporary marking/scaring that can be very useful for those that want to use such in their roleplays.
There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

Bridget didn't hesitate for a second to take the potion offered to her. The sooner she drank the golden liquid, the better. The brunette wouldn't even be able to describe the taste of the potion to someone later in her haste. She drank it greedily, gulping down the contents, only stopping when she was told to. Had she not been in such excruciating pain, she would have considered there was only a limited supply of the potion and tried to ration herself so all her afflicted housemates had some. As it was, her sole concern was ending the pain.
And end the pain the potion, whatever it happened to be, did. The relief from the torture was perhaps the best thing she'd ever felt, the fire fading into nonexistence. Handing back the partially emptied vial, Bridget dared to check if the black had vanished along with the pain. And... it hadn't. Her hope plummeted like a stone. She was one of the lucky ones with just one bite, the poison of which hadn't spread past her arm. But it was still there.
Tearing her gaze from the blackened veins, she looked up at the nurse, silently begging him to tell her the scars would fade too, that they just needed more time. The smile he gave her was all she needed. It was strained, forced, a clear message that this was bad. That things weren't all okay. If they needed to come back every week, that meant they hadn't been fixed. Had the potion only numbed the pain? Staring at her wound again, it looked like the spread of the curse had stopped. His next words confirmed that, also hinting the halt was temporary. One week. Then what? Would it hurt again? Would it spread? Bridget felt sick. She just wanted to go home, to escape this nightmare.
The worst part? There was no cure. At least, that was how she interpreted the nurse's words. Some potions took a while to brew, so it was possible they just had to wait for it to be made. But based off the adults' reactions to seeing the bites and hearing what had happened, this wasn't some normal occurrence in the magical world. And if there was no cure, and if something happened where she didn't get the thick golden potion in time...
"Am I going to die?" she asked the nurse. The words came out without a hitch, but they were empty, almost robotic. As if she wasn't the one saying them. She wasn't crying anymore. With the pain gone, all she had left was acute terror for the pain returning and the looming threat of her premature death.

Miss Jensen heard her call and approached the young girl. Handing her a bottle, she told the girl to drink. Reaching out towards the Head of House, Tyranni grapped the bottle and took a quick swig of what she presumed was a potion. Handing the bottle back to Miss Jensen, she waited a few seconds before answering to see if she would feel differently. Nothing.
"I have heard others speaking of a curse. I know you were not around, and you shouldn't feel bad about that. If it wasn't for that blue-haired psycho who ignored the rest of us, this might not have happened. A few students even considered going to wake you." She hoped that may help console the Head. She always had appeared quite stoic, strong, and headstrong, but this must be hurting her soul to see all her "children" in pain. "You were speaking with the nurse some. Did you hear anything else about what may have been the motive behind this attack? It seemed so random, but those two strange students both experienced similar things that none of us could. It does not seem random." If only she could obtain some more information, maybe she could write home to her family. She may not be able to help, but her mother being a healer may have seen something similar in her years of practice. At least that might mean it wasn't a provoked attack.

“Enough to help.”
The nurse painted a bleak picture as Arlo looked up at him with wet eyes. The adrenaline was starting to wear off and in it’s place crept in the fear. Fight or flight is a funny thing. Usually brought on by the mind fearing for the body, self preservation kicks in. The fear can actually sharpen the mind, quicken the reflexes and bring forth a strength you might not know you had. That was the situation that young Arlo had found himself just a bit earlier this night. He had fought bravely with his housemates and showed an untested courage.
However, as all things do, it would fade. A different kind of fear would work it way through him. The kind that grips you when the crisis turns to calm. The kind that makes you weak in the knees as the mind begins to process the trauma. It was all becoming a bit too much for the boy as the tears began to drip down his cheeks. His lips would tremble as his throat restricted with emotion. Nurse Fin would instruct him to gather the rest of the potion bottles as he began to administer the concoction.
“I-I can’t r-reach it.” Arlo stuttered. As the words escaped his lips, the emotion would pour out behind them. He would bury his face in his large hands as he began to cry in earnest. “I-I need h-help.”

Interacting with: Finlay Vancleaf & Tyranni Whitethorn
Her eyes fell onto each individual. She spotted one of her prefects, defeated. The blood stained face was not signs of a wound bleeding out but rather, a sign of her heart breaking.
Hjørdis heard her name being spoken. Her heart sank as Finlay spoke his next words, informing her that the students had to return to the hospital wing on a weekly basis, for additional doses. She almost gaped at him, he was being serious and it hurt. It told her one very important thing that horrified her: he was unable to cure this. He was doubtful that the potion would work. The curse was going to stay with them and this potion would only help on a temporary basis. None of these students wanted to spend the next hundred years returning to a hospital for a potion. Of course they did not. Hjørdis did not want that for them either. That was the only logical reason that they would have to return weekly without a definite deadline. If he said they needed a specific number of doses, that could only be administered on a weekly basis, it would mean something very different. He did not say that.
His words implied weekly, indefinitely.
"What sort of curse is it?" She asked him quietly, wondering if he could give her any more information about it. Anything he could offer her would be helpful. She needed to help find a cure. It was eating her alive that the students were cursed and she could do absolutely nothing about it.
She allowed the girl a moment's peace to drink the potion, taking it back when it was returned to her. The girl spoke up, coming to the matter in hand. The one that made her call for her head of house. Hjørdis prepared herself for questions, to be asked why they were cursed, how it happened, where everything came from, what was going on. Students had a lot of questions, always eager to learn. It was one of the things that she liked about children - their willingness to learn new things. It was always something she appreciated until she was on the receiving end of the questions to which she had no answers.
But Whitethorn's words were not pleas for help or a list of questions. Her first words... The very first thing the younger girl said made every bit of the head of house's shattered heart hurt. It had felt like it had been broken into pieces already. Now it felt like someone was going around, collecting all of the pieces and stabbing them, over and over. A student, one who just found out that she was hurt and bitten and cursed, was comforting the one who was healthy and safe. It seemed odd. Hjørdis must have looked like a bigger mess than she realised if they thought she needed comforting words more than they needed them.
Hjørdis listened though, actually getting more information about the situation with every word. She sat down on the edge of Whitethorn's bed, turning her body to face her. Her expression softened. It was not the blank, cold look she had been trying to maintain the whole school year. Her features softened a little, there was a hint of a smile toying on the edge of her lips. It was a relaxed look, one without worry or tension. The hand not holding the potion found its way to the top of the first year's head. Hjørdis gently patted it, "You do not have to worry about me, Miss Whitethorn." She reassured the younger female, "But I very much appreciate it." It stung a little that the first year was comforting the Head of House but her broken ego was not something that needed further massaging. She wanted to show the younger one that she was still grateful, though there was no reason to worry.
Of course, this was a lie. Hjørdis definitely felt bad. She should have been there. It warmed her heart a little to know that perhaps, not everyone, thought she had completely failed them - even if she believed she had. The pain was evident in her eyes and her actions but she was attempting to show otherwise. It is often said that the Head of Slytherin is a cold, mean, scary lady. Emotionless, they said. Heartless.
And yet...
Tyranni Whitethorn won her heart in a single moment. One of the shattered pieces would forever be hers.
Hjørdis fought back her tears. She wanted to hug the child in front of her. But more than that, she wanted to protect her. She was overcome with a desire to do absolutely anything to never see a look of pain on Tyranni's face. She had no idea what was going on in Hogwarts but she made a silent promise to herself to not rest until they were safe. Until each and every Slytherin was safe. They were her Slytherins.
She sighed softly, shaking her head. It was almost like she was disappointed. Perhaps because she was. Disappointed in herself. "I don't know what happened in that room," She replied, still trying to piece together the bits of information that she was receiving from various students. The student addressed the point that Hjørdis found suspicious too. Multiple people told her that 'two' people heard the noises from the dorms but no one else could. It certainly sounded suspicious. "I can't promise you this was an accident..." Hjørdis added, unable to reassure the student. But what she could offer her was the truth. Plain and simple. It was not necessarily what Tyranni wanted to hear but it was all Hjørdis could offer her: honesty. After everything that happened, she deserved to have her questions answered, "But I can promise you that I will find out if it was intentional." Her tone started soft. Comforting, perhaps. It ended with a firmness. A strong resolve, a confidence. She was clearly determined to find out.
