Maybe keep the club that's been here longer?
Yes. i'd like to say that clubs as far as I know are first come first serve, so since Elowin's club is older, she's completely fine to keep it as is. :)

Hey question for you all - there is a certain number of homeworks that you need to do in order to get to the next year in homework, how many is it? I think it was 3? Or maybe 5?

Say you don't do any homeworks at all. Do you still go up in year in July when the year changes? Or is it only that you just don't open up the next year of homework?

Basic Homework Things

What's Homework?
The Homework System will become available to students once they have been on the site for at least 10 days and they have 20 or more posts. If you are having trouble figuring out what to post, check out the various forum games in At the Counter Chat. To check these things, at the top of the page, click the picture frame (top rightmost button) and go to Profile. This menu is very important, and much of your navigation is done here.

A homework is a lesson that was written by an instructor for you, the student, to participate in and respond back. Usually containing some questions about the text, and sometimes even a little roleplay exercise.

To find your homework, click on the pictureframe, and then click on Report Card. If you see a bunch of boxes with symbols, then you have access. There are different classes (in the columns), and each class has 5 lessons (rows).

Symbols:
- You haven't completed this course yet - click on it to go there
? You turned in your homework, and it will be graded soon
O You got the highest grade, congrats!
E You got the second highest grade, congrats!
A This grade means A for Acceptable
P This grade means P for Poor - you didn't do a good job
T This grade means your homework had as much intelligence as a T for Troll does - this is the lowest grade
[] Nothing means this course isn't open to you yet

Students can go up in year when the year changes, in real-life every July 1st. Ask others about this part in red. If you have completed at least 5 total homeworks (any grade), then you will be advanced to the next year, and the next year of homework will be available to you. If you are a returning student and you're having trouble catching up, check out the Advancement Program which is specifically meant to help with this.

Why do homework at all?

You don't have to if you don't want to. But I think it's fun. Some homeworks come with the reward of your character learning a spell or receiving an item for completion.

You also earn points for your house - as this is the primary way to earn points. To check your points go to the homepage and you can click on the hourglass of your house to see who has been earning points (note the filters at the top). You can also check your points by going to view your profile (picture frame > Profile).

Can I just use AI to do the homework for me?

See here: AI Use and You . The short answer is 'no'. This is a reading and writing website. If you don't want to do the homework, it would be better not to do it at all rather than using AI - using AI is worse than not doing it at all. So don't do it.

Anonymity? What's that?

Basically, all homework should not identify you, the student, or any other student at Hogwarts.io. Usually this really has to do with writing a roleplay and what characters you name or reference. They are VERY serious about this rule. Do not test them, you will loose points. They are so serious that they are not even going to look up any name that you mention in your roleplay to see if it's an actual student or not. If you identify any name and don't say that they're not a student, or use some other identifier, they will assume that it is. They have a lot of homeworks to grade, they just can't spend the time.

Ideas to avoid losing points:
- Just use pronouns "I caught the ball" or "They caught the ball" or "He/She caught the ball" and don't name anyone
- Use a pseudonym "Jeremy (this is a pseudonym)"
- Best practice is to make a list of all of the names used, and before your story starts, write each one and say that they are pseudonyms

What's a GPA?
A GPA stands for Grade Point Average, and this means the average score of all of the courses that you completed. An A is worth 1 point, E is 2 points, and O is 3 points. All other grades are worth 0 points. An average means to sum everything up and divide by the number of things.

So if you got an O, A, E, E in all your classes, your GPA would be (3 + 1 + 2 + 2)/4 which is (8)/4 which is a GPA of 2.0, which is an E-average. (A-average is 0.0 - o.99, E-average is 1.0 - 1.99, and O-average is 2.0 - 3.0 ).

I feel overwhelmed! There's too much homework!
The year changes in July, so really, this amount of homework is meant to be stretched out over a full year, not all at once. There is no rule that says that you have to do it all. Pace yourself. Perhaps you set little goals like : I will try to do one homework every Saturday. These little goals are the best way to chug along in your homework.

How do I get good grades?
The best way is to read the lesson entirely, and then to read the part about homeworks at the bottom very carefully. It outlines how to get points and how they are taken away. Each class has their own grading rules, and it might be different from another class. But here are some general guidelines:

- do not use AI [*]
- for all class homeworks: include the question and the points
- DON'T use fancy formatting, pictures, posting tables, and so on. Make it simple. Using italics and bold where needed is ok. Using colors is getting a bit iffy. Don't adjust the size or fonts of things, the professors don't really like it - some of them are older and can't see tiny fonts really well.
- read over the class' rules before writing up your homework
- make sure that your homework abides those rules
- check your homework - yes, each question - before turning it in

[*] Some AI checkers work by looking up if you have ever taken any text from any AI website at all. Even if all you did was to put your text in there to grammar or spelling check. So it is better not to use ANY AI AT ALL. If you are worried about spelling, your browser will tell you with a red-squiggle which words might be misspelled and you can right-click on them for suggestions, and this is not AI. I do not know which AI checkers that the site uses.

Winning the House Cup?
Do you remember how you earn house points for completing homeworks? You can help your house to win the house cup by completing homeworks. You get points whenever you do homeworks. But, if your house is all trying to push towards this goal, that's when your homework is especially helpful in helping your house to win, especially if your house is competing with another house to win the cup.

How do I get the BEST grades? Give me the really GOOD tips.
Here's the basic tips as a reminder:

- do not use AI. At all.
- include the question and the points
- DON'T use fancy formatting
- read over the class' rules before writing up your homework
- check your homework before turning it in

Now, the fancy tips. The good stuff:

- if you just aren't feeling it, don't do it. Chances are that you will get a worse grade when you try to do homework that you just aren't into right now. Come back to it later when you feel a bit better. It's not going anywhere, it will still be there.
- Pace yourself. Set accomplishable goals such as "I will try to do 15 homeworks this month". It helps to have a normal day/time when you sit down to do them (a routine)
- The worst thing that you could do is to try to do lesson 1 of each subject, then lesson 2 of each subject, then 3, ... this is because each subject has its own rules and this takes up a lot of time. It's also very exhausting with all the mental task switching.
- Remember that you can check previous homeworks if you have a question. If the lesson instructions say to use complete sentences but it's multiple choice, what should you do? Why not look back at the lesson that you already submitted and see what you did last time? Did it work? Why or why not? To revisit an old lesson, just click on it in your report card.
- It's encouraging to complete all of the homeworks of one subject all at once, because you know the grading and lesson style.
- Some lessons are easier than others. It's ok to do what works for you, personally. If you want the easy ones first, or the hard ones first, do what works for you. If you like snacks, do snacks. If you like music, do music. You know how you work best.
- Check over the lesson before you hand it in. Here's the brutal truth. If you're looking for the highest letter grade (O) each and every time, the only way to do that is to not lose points on your homework. And the only way to not lose points is to look for anything that might be wrong. For the high-achiever and perfectionist students, consider writing up your homework, but not submitting it (save it in Microsoft Word or something), and then the next day, check over each and every question and make sure that you got it right. This is the way that I got the highest grades. It is possible to choose the answer that you didn't mean, I've done it a time or two, and this method is how you get the maximum points.

I didn't get the grade I wanted!
Unfortunately, there are no re-submissions or asking to be regraded. You can only move forwards. As a human, we all make mistakes. So not making any mistakes, ever, is impossible. You will make mistakes, I make mistakes, we all do. So, you will have homeworks where you just don't achieve the grade that you want. And that's okay. It's going to be okay. Instead of focusing on each specific lesson grade, what if you focus on your GPA?

Remember that even if you don't get the grade that you wanted, there are more lessons, so you can pull your grade up if you get better grades on the other assignments.

Just to keep in mind that you don't need to do any homework to advance to the next year, the only thing is that you need to be indexed to advance. There is no minimum homework requirement!
