While the school day had just finished with the end of his last class, Leo was far from finished working for the day. He had planned to head to the library to work on homework and studying as well for the classes that didn’t have homework. After the busy weekend, Leo had gone into this Monday knowing he had to, not necessarily catch up but try to push forward with his studies after not really doing much of it for the couple days prior.

Leo walked through the corridors and down to the main floor, pushing through the large doors and into the library that was becoming more and more familiar as he visited so often. One month into his first year at Hogwarts and he had visited the library at least two or three times a week to study and work on homework. The quiet atmosphere and smell of old books calmed him while at the same time provided the perfect space to complete his work. Shutting the doors behind him, Leo headed towards one of his favorite spots to sit and study, a little table towards the back. It was away from where most of the other students sat and away from the door so it proved to be a great spot to avoid distractions. With a pleased smile on his face to see it empty, he placed his books and notebooks down on the table and took a seat before opening the first book.

Even now though the events of the weekend’s ball crossed his mind as he tried to focus on the words in front of him in his defense against the dark arts textbook. Sighing softly he let his head hang down and ruffled the back of his hair with his hand, frustrated that he was letting a silly dance cloud his mind when he had so much to do. If anything the weekend should be motivating him more to learning even more magic after seeing the practical uses for it in the escape room. He couldn’t blame himself though, he was only a first year, one month into learning magic officially nonetheless. There was much to learn yet and he had plenty of time still to learn it but even so he was anxious to get to discover it all and prove also to his family that he could be as great as his siblings, especially his older brother.

Right now his brother was probably in the middle of some more training to become an auror like their father, something that the family had been so proud of. But this reason for his parents to be proud of one son was their reason to push Leo even harder to excel in school and do even greater things. Thus, with this thought in the back of his mind always, Leo pushed the memories of the weekend out for the moment and focused on reading through the chapter in his book, noting down everything he deemed to be important.

The weekend had come and gone, and Monday had finally arrived. And it always arrived dragging Frederick back to reality, with its classes, homework, and countless notes to study. Normally, the boy handled his responsibilities fairly well, but this time in particular, Fred found himself still caught up in the weekend. He had attended his first Hogwarts ball, and his thoughts kept drifting back to everything that had happened on Saturday night, leaving him rather distracted in all his classes. By the end of the last lesson, however, Frederick had no choice but to face his tasks: he needed to head to the library to catch up on the homework he’d ignored all weekend, before the week properly began and everything piled up like a snowball.

Usually, the boy did his homework in the common room or the Great Hall. He wasn’t really the type who needed complete silence to work, and to be honest, Frederick often relied on his classmates’ help to finish his assignments. He always defended it as the best method, teamwork, like in Quidditch, to accomplish something where everyone shared the same goal: graduating. This time, however, since he needed a specific book, he decided to say goodbye to his group, telling them he’d be working in the library instead and that if they really needed him, they could find him there.

As he said his goodbyes, Frederick secretly hoped someone might join him, but no one seemed eager to face the end of a Monday, the most tiresome day of the week, made even worse after such a lively weekend, inside the library. Heading there alone, the boy carried his backpack and little enthusiasm, but he walked in determined to get his work done quickly so he could be free as soon as possible. Frederick passed through the archway and made a quick stop at the librarian’s desk, asking her which section held the Defense Against the Dark Arts book he needed.

Knowing where to look, Frederick made his way between the tall shelves, counting the section numbers until he reached the right one, located near the back of the room. He entered an aisle formed between the bookcases and began searching the shelves. He walked back and forth a few times, brushing dust off some titles to read their covers, until finally he found the one he wanted. With his right hand, Frederick pulled the Defense Against the Dark Arts book from a middle shelf, low enough that he didn’t even have to stretch his arm, and, backpack still slung over his shoulders, started walking toward the few tables nearby.

Before he actually reached them, Fred spotted and recognized Leo sitting at one of the tables. The black-haired Ravenclaw boy was alone, with a book and notebook open in front of him, looking deeply focused on his studies. Without thinking twice, Fred made his way toward him, walking a bit more energetically now that he thought he’d have company. With his usual carefree manner, the Gryffindor spoke before he’d even closed the distance, “Leo! Great to see you here. Mind if I sit with you?” he said, stopping beside him and looking down, since he remained standing while waiting for the boy’s reply. For a split second, Fred forgot he was in the library, his voice carrying just a bit too loudly for the place.

After getting settled in and having his book and notebook open and ready, Leo began going over the lesson they had done discussing the red and green spark charms. He went and wrote down the incantations and wand movements along with anything else of note he could think of. Going over this lesson again made him once again think back to the weekend during the escape room when Lucille had cast the red sparks charm, periculum. He laughed softly to himself as he thought about how between that and the lumos spell being cast the algae was practically hiding from them. The poor algae. But it had become like their own private fireworks show so at least the group had found humor in their little mistakes along the way of trying to escape the room.

Thinking back on the escape room made him think back to that night again. It just wouldn’t leave his mind and he didn’t know why. It had been a fun night, good food, the escape room although they had some missteps was exciting and he even managed to get out and dance too. But he found himself thinking more about the person he was dancing with than the actual night’s events instead. Rosaline and him had become pretty good friends over the last almost two months since their first meeting at summer camp. Now though they had gotten even closer. He was happy to have such a good friend he could turn to and do all this fun stuff with, even meet some new people through but he couldn’t get her off his mind at times. Once again with his thoughts on everything but the book in front of him he shook his head and focused on the page he had been trying to read for the last couple of minutes before getting distracted again.

As he continued glancing through the chapter he heard a familiar voice call out to him, the voice he didn’t even have to look up to know who it was, Fred. Leo had the pleasure of meeting Fred on a couple of occasions now and had noticed the boy was always cheerful and outgoing, kind of the opposite of Leo in ways with how he was more straightforward and more talkative than him. But Leo found him interesting for that reason and although he assumed was more of Rosa’s friend than his own he hoped the two would get to become closer since they had spent more time together and seem to keep meeting too. Leo looked up at the Gryffindor boy and offered a friendly smile before nodding, “Go right ahead, I don’t mind the company. I’m just going over some Defense Against the Dark Arts lessons.” He said as he tilted the book in his direction. “I actually was just at the Periculum spell and was thinking about our fun fireworks display in the escape room.” Placing the book down on the table again he looked over at the boy and noticed he had a book for Defense Against the Dark Arts too. “Oh did you come to study for that class too? That’s perfect we can work together then.” He mentioned to him, leaning back in his chair and stretching his arms up over his head. It worked out well that Fred was joining him maybe the two could study and talk and hopefully get his mind off things.

As soon as Leo finished speaking, Frederick pulled out the chair across from the Ravenclaw, dragged it closer to the table, and dropped into it. He let his backpack slide off his shoulder and onto the empty chair beside him, then set the book he’d been carrying under his arm down on the table. All the while, he kept the conversation going, glancing between Leo, his things, and the book before finally sitting properly and facing him.

“Thanks. Yeah, I came to study Defense Against the Dark Arts too. Lucky I ran into someone I know, otherwise, well… you know. Hard to find motivation to study on the Monday after a ball.” He shook his head lightly and let out a quiet laugh. “And yeah, I also remembered that moment from the escape room a few times. I don’t think Lucille will need to review that spell anytime soon.” Fred added with another chuckle as he opened the book in front of him, flipping through the pages without much focus.

Leo’s mention of Periculum lingered in his mind for a second longer than expected. It had been Lucille’s spell in the escape room, and thinking of her pulled his thoughts straight back to the Weeping Shore, the dancefloor and, specifically, to the part of the night when he and Lucille had shared a dance. A brief one, but memorable enough to make Fred blink and bring himself back to the present before he drifted too much.

As he got settled, searching inside his backpack for his notebook, quill, and ink, his thoughts returned to the escape room, when he, Leo, Rosaline, Lucille, and Althea had worked as a team to solve the mystery of the Drowned Palace. “That escape room was really fun, wasn’t it?”. He said, alternating between looking at Leo and his study materials. “I think we worked well as a team. Did you already know Lucille and the older girl, Althea?” He didn’t mention Rosaline, since he knew Leo knew her already… and because, when it came to the both of them, he had other questions he hoped he might eventually ask. Maybe today would be the right moment.

While waiting for Leo’s answer, Fred decided to start by reviewing the chapter, making a brief summary of the theoretical bits before moving on to the questions for the assignment he needed to write. Splitting his attention between studying and talking with Leo wasn’t too hard. In fact, he realized he liked being able to sit with Leo and talk a little more. The Ravenclaw seemed quieter and more reserved than him, not that it was difficult, but still always open and friendly in the interactions they’d had so far, including now.

Leo watched as Fred pulled out a chair and settled in, laying out his book and things on the table in front of him. As Leo listened to him speak, he chuckled in agreement since he was struggling with the same problem right now. “Yeah, I understand that a little too well right now.” He laughed as Fred jokingly talked about Lucille’s spell. “Definitely not, I think she’s got that one down for sure.” As the Gryffindor boy opened his book and started flipping through pages, Leo let his gaze turn back to his own book and notebook open in front of him. He tried to get a little more reading done as a moment of silence came between the two of them as they began to put a little more focus on their reason for coming to library in the first place.

It wasn’t until Fred had spoke again, breaking the silence, that Leo looked up from his textbook again. Leo smiled as he thought back to the escape room they had enjoyed the other day. It had been such a fun event and he had really enjoyed the challenge of trying to figure out the clues with the group. Leo let the end of his quill run over his lower lip as he thought back. “I didn’t meet Althea before but I had met Lucille during the first year’s boat ride across the lake but didn’t talk to her much then. I know her mostly because she is friends with Rosaline.” The mention of her name again was enough to bring his mind back to the night of the ball that he had spent with her. It was clear he wasn’t going to get it out of his head any time soon. “What about you?” He managed to ask as his mind wandered, the memories of their dinner and dance flooding Leo’s head.

As the two sat there and talked quietly, Leo tried to continue working, writing notes on the pages he was reading. Leo was starting to feel a little more comfortable talking to Fred now that they had a chance to sit and talk alone. Maybe he would get to learn some more about the charismatic Gryffindor boy. With the ball still in the back of his mind, he decided to ask Fred how the rest of his night went since they only had gotten to interact at the escape room. “Did you have fun at the ball? Besides the escape room, I mean.” He asked while keeping his eyes glued to the page in front of him, letting his finger run over the words as he read. “I remember you were with a little group when we were eating dinner.”

When people laughed at a joke Frederick had meant to make, he thought it was great. But when they laughed at something he said unintentionally, some quick remark or well-timed comment, he liked it even more. So when Leo laughed at his comment about Lucille’s spell, which hadn’t exactly been intended as a joke, Fred smiled silently to himself, pleased to hear the Ravenclaw enjoying his company. The boy stayed quiet for a while after that, trying to focus on his notes.

Not long after, really, barely a moment later, Frederick broke the silence, as expected, and asked Leo whether he already knew the girls besides Rosaline. He nodded along as he listened, since he too had only met Althea on the day of the escape room, at the same moment Leo did. But Lucille was a different story. The moment Leo asked, “What about you?” Fred continued the thread easily. “Oh, I also met Althea that day in the escape room. And that’s cool that you shared the boat ride with Lucille. Even though she’s also a Gryffindor, I only really met her one day when I went outside for some fresh air on the grounds…” He paused for a moment, glancing toward the window, thoughtful. “She’s really nice, isn’t she?” The question slipped out lightly, no longer wearing the pensive expression, more like a rhetorical comment than anything else.

Something in the conversation made Fred feel like talking a bit more about her. Or about them, to be more exact. Call it intuition or whatever, but after seeing Leo and Rosaline together at the ball, sitting at a table just the two of them, Frederick wondered if maybe Leo was going through the same thing he was: figuring out what it meant to like someone. Should he talk to Leo about it? And if not him, then who? As the two boys fell quiet again, scribbling notes onto their parchment, Fred’s thoughts drifted back and forth to the events of the weekend.

This time it was Leo who broke the silence, pulling Fred out of his thoughts. The Gryffindor lifted his eyes from the book to look at the boy across from him. “Yeah, I actually had a really good time. More than I expected.” He gave a soft laugh, smiling faintly as he lifted his eyebrows at Leo’s comment about dinner. “I got to the ball with that group of friends you saw. Maisie, Marcus, and Ally.” Fred set his quill down so he could count the three names off on his fingers. “We had dinner together, before I went wandering around the dance floor on my own.” He picked the quill back up and twirled it between his fingers before returning to his writing, glancing back and forth between Leo and his notes as he asked his next question. “Did you and Rosaline have fun?” Changing the way Leo had phrased his question just a bit, Fred slipped away at the last second, choosing to bring their mutual friend into it instead.

════════════Leo nodded slightly as he listened to Fred speak. The first month of school had been filled with first meetings of all sorts, good and bad. He was happy their group for the escape room had turned out so well, everyone worked together great and had a good time. For once he really felt like he had some friends now he could turn to. It was nice especially since he never really felt like he had that with other kids before since usually his interactions with others were always with the children of his family’s connections at important functions where he had to behave and have proper etiquette and such. Being at Hogwarts in general had been a freeing experience since he felt like he got to become more like himself now.

At Fred’s comment about Lucille, Leo glanced up at the boy again who was now looking towards the window. It was a simple comment that his friend had slipped out but it felt like there might have been more behind it but he chose not to push it, for now, maybe. With Leo shifting the conversation to the ball again, he listened intently to the other boy as he shared some details of his night. He was glad to hear that the night had been good for both of them.

Leo stopped writing in his notes mid sentence as he thought about it. He had considered the possibility of going with a group to the ball but it had quickly changed to asking Rosaline to attend with him. She was probably one of the people he felt closest to at Hogwarts so it only made sense in his mind to ask her to go with him, as friends, of course. Leo looked up and stared off into the distance, not really looking at anything in particular but just lost in thought for a moment. “Yeah, it was a fun night.” A small smile crept up onto his face as he thought about the ball and quickly looked back down at his notes as he spoke again. “Dinner was good, the decorations were really well done, it was definitely interesting altogether.” He said listing off little things he remembered to keep his focus off the person he spent the evening with to avoid getting flustered again.

As he asked his last question, Frederick kept shifting his gaze between Leo and his Defense Against the Dark Arts homework. At first, Leo answered briefly, saying it had been a fun night without giving many details, but Fred was almost certain he had seen a small smile appear on the Ravenclaw’s face before he lowered his head again and continued speaking. In Fred’s childish mind, that meant something. Going to a ball with a girl as your date probably meant something too.

The Gryffindor boy suppressed a small laugh, lowering his own head to focus on his notes while nodding along to what Leo was saying. “Yeah, yeah, definitely interesting,” he echoed lightly. Naturally curious, Fred found himself wondering whether Leo and Rosaline were dating. He wasn’t entirely sure why the thought had popped into his head, but in the world of a boy who was nearly twelve, where hormones were beginning to steer thoughts in new directions and girls were starting to be seen differently, it seemed like a recurring subject.

Resting his quill on the table, Frederick scratched the back of his neck with his right hand before picking it up again, still keeping the conversation on the ball. “So… what did you two talk about the whole night?” he asked, brow furrowing slightly. “Sometimes I think it’s kind of hard to talk to girls.” He admitted it plainly. Leo was probably the same age as him, but somehow he had managed to ask Rosaline to the ball and stay with her the entire evening, while Fred had barely stood still that night, drifting from tables to the dance floor and even to the Drowned Palace event.

Outside, the sky had begun to darken, and Frederick’s stomach gave a subtle reminder that dinner time was approaching. He paused his notes and stretched in his chair, glancing back toward the window and the landscape surrounding the castle. Because he had been talking with Leo, there was still part of the chapter left to review, but Fred felt satisfied enough. He wasn’t overly attached to studying, at least for now, he could put in minimal effort and still manage good marks.

“Well, I think I’m done for today,” he said, closing his book and beginning to gather his things. “Are you hungry? We could head down to dinner together.” He suggested, already slipping his parchment back into his bag and preparing to leave the library. On the way, he thought it would be nice if they could all get together again someday, him, Leo, Rosa, Lucille, and even Althea, the older girl, if she felt like spending some time with the younger kids.

𝓦hile Leo could’ve sworn he heard a muffled laugh come from the Gryffindor boy. Was something he said funny? He only had mentioned it being fun and a few other comments what was there that was funny? He pushed the thoughts from his mind as he listened to the boy repeat back his own words of the ball being interesting. With most of his work done, Leo worked on a few more questions so he could finish before dinner.

There was a silence between the two before Fred’s next question came. Leo looked up at him, raising an eyebrow in confusion. “I don’t know, nothing in particular I guess. We talked about the ball itself, the food and decorations. We talked about some other things..” He trailed off as he remembered changing his eye color in front of her and how she found his ability so interesting. She was so sweet about his ability it made him feel more at ease around her, even to the point where like at the ball he felt comfortable changing his eye color in front of her for fun. Something he knew he would get looks for from most others. But not her. Her smile when she saw his eye color change was one of the highlights of the night honestly speaking. Quickly coming back to the conversation, “Oh, we talked about maybe hanging out during the summer break.” Leo mentioned and smiled before continuing. “I don’t really think it’s that hard though. Maybe just because I grew up with my older sister?” He said and just the mention of her made him miss her a little. He wondered how she was doing and what she was up to now.

His thoughts switched back to Fred’s question. What brought the sudden question up? He was friends with Lucille and Rosaline too so he clearly had talked to them so he couldn’t have that much trouble. Leo found it especially strange since the boy was so outgoing and friendly that he figured he had no trouble talking to anyone in general. He seemed like a proper extrovert type who was able to befriend anyone and carry out conversations, something that was especially convenient for someone like Leo who found it hard to talk to people in general and was more quiet. Talking to Rosaline though was never hard. They always had a fun time and while there would be pauses it was never uncomfortable. Not just her though, he was able to talk to Cecilia too.

With Leo finishing up his work, he heard Fred’s stomach grumble and held back a chuckle. He glanced at his watch and then nodded, packing up his books and notes, making sure everything was neatly put away for later. Leo stood up and smiled at the other boy, “Sounds good, let’s go.”
