It was one of those rare occasions that no one else was on the pitch. One of those rare times when Lamik could practice his role without feeling judged. When he had signed up to be Gryffindors seeker, its not like he expected to be especially good at it, and he definitely hadnt expected it to be easy. For some reason though, the boy felt extremely dissapointed in himself every time he thought back to his first quidditch game. He had been so close to catching the snitch, he even managed to hold onto it for a few moments, and still couldn't manage. Lamik wasn't someone who usually cared about what other people thought, but his failure as a seeker was, for some reason, an exception.

And so on that wednsday, at 5pm in the eavining, when no one at all was around, Lamik released one of the schools snitches into the pitch and looked away to let it vanish from his sight. After about a minute, he got onto his broom and flew high into the air. From up there, looking down onto the field, all he could imagine was the next game he would participate in; their team had already failed at winning the years season, but maybe they could still pull off a win against slytherin. Either that, or it would be another embaressing loss.

Lamik pushed those thoughts out of his head as he focused once again on his surroundings, searching for that faint glint of the sunset against the metal ball and listening to the soft flutter of wings. It took him a bit longer then he had expected as the snitch had decided to fly all the way over to the other side of the field, but eventually, as he flew around the pitch, Lamik noticed the slightest movement at the base of one of the goal posts.

Immedietly, he flew towards it, determined to catch it on his first attempt. The closer he got, the farther he leaned, and the more he stretched one arm out towards the golden ball. It may have been that dangerous position, but it could also have been his increasing feelings of dissapointment whenever he practiced the game that caused the mext events to unfold. Whatever it was, right as he reached the snitch, his hands wraping around it, the boy slowed down, giving him a moment of pride before it all came crashing down. Lamik had pulled on his broom too hard. Instead of coming to a slow halt, the broomstick just stopped, throwing the boy off of it violently and onto the floor a few meters below. As he tumbled onto the grass, rolling a few times before coming to the stop, sharp pain shot up through his leg, accompanied by a crack from his twisting ankle. Lamik had never broken a bone before, and he didn't know if he just had. Whatever it was though, it hurt, and tears immedietly welled up in his eyes, alone on the field, unmoving.

Kaegen's tired eyes were watching a boy fly his broom, keeping track of the movement now and again from his periphery. It wasn't that the ravenclaw was especially interested, but he certainly didn't want to lose track of someone that could swiftly fly over to his location and proceed to blaze fire from the sky. Kaegen was feeling irritable, and annoyed. He had been thinking about himself much too frequently as of late. It had all started with some annoying little Gryffindor that lacked the strength or common sense to get out of the dungeons on his own. The damnable story about the monster.

Kaegen didn't usually pick up on metaphors. But he was the monster. He was the literal monster, part demon, lording fear over the denizens of hogwarts. There was no mistaking what the boy meant, there was no hiding from the words that were so blatantly obvious. Die alone, and scared, and cold? No. No he refused. That was a path of suffering that others may feel forced to walk down, but Kaegen would not be counted among them.

It was only when the broom vanished from view did he start moving towards the pitch. That had been too fast of a vanishing act for someone dismounting. There was foul play afoot, and he wasn't going to be taken by surprise, not if he had anything to say about it. The corpse-child poked his head around the corner only around a minute later, seeing the form a boy down on the ground. It didn't seem to be dead, but maybe mortally wounded? There were no antagonists to be seen, but Kaegen wasn't about to take chances.

Another minute later, a crumpled ball of paper hit lamik on the face. On it was written:
[Is it safe? (groan for no, recite the motto of Hogwarts backwarts in latin for yes. If you need help, explain gravity to a blade of grass while rolling your eyes twice.)]

Lamik wasn't entirely sure what to do. He definitely couldn't walk- his leg hurt too much. As far as he was aware, no one was around that would be able to hear any cries for help. Maybe if he just kept lying there for a bit the pain would subside a bit, but the thought of staying alone and unmoving for so long while suffering so much was far too scary of a thought for the 12 year old to bear. No, he'd have to do something else, and even though it took a little while, Lamik eventually realized what his best option was. Taking quick shallow breaths between choked sobs, the young Gryffindor reached into his robe and pulled out his wand.

But just as he raised it into the air, about to flick his hand diagonally and whisper the correct incantation that would send a red flare like spark high into the air, something hit him in the face. He wasn't sure what it was, but it startled the boy enough to make him drop his wand onto the grass by his side. Lamik instinctively tried to sit up, but that clearly wasn't a good choice as it sent a fresh wave of pain through his leg, causing him to fall back onto his back and groan loudly.

Kaegen was certainly wary, but he was also tired, irritable, hungry and altogether done with humanity as a collective. How had the boy not noticed the piece of paper? It was so obvious, so easy to go along with, it didn't take any thinking at all, was the crumpled mass of human just that pathetic? That incomprehensibly stupid he couldn't pick up the stupid piece of stupid paper?

Kaegen threw most of his caution to the wind, approaching the prone figure preceded by a shadow that was much longer than it should have been. It didn't take him long to position himself above the boy, looming down with a glare as his raspy voice tried to demand an explanation

"What's wrong with you, then."

He didn't really recognize the boy, although something about him seemed vaguely familiar. Based on past experiences, that probably meant he had talked with him before, although where that happened or what took place eluded him. With any luck, it would spring to his mind in a few minutes, or maybe he just needed a better view of the other boy's face. It was kinda hard to see it, all obscured and on the ground like that.

Just when the pain began to subside once again, and Lamik prepared to raise his wand into the air, he heard soft footsteps on the grass. With a sigh of relief, the boy relaxed. Somebody was around. somebody had come to help. He raised his hands up to his face, wiping away the tears and rubbing his eyes. "I need help." He said as he saw the shadowy figure stand above him between his fingers. If he was in any other condition, Lamik would have seen the phrasing of what was said to him as a red flag, but that wasn't at the top of his priority list at the moment. "I fell off my-"

As he spoke, Lamik let his hands fall back to his sides, clearing up his view of the figure. That pit in his stomach that made him feel like a failure was swallowed up, replaced by an intense, nearly aching shock. Lamiks blood froze. His body tensed up. He couldn't breathe. "Kaegen." He said in a whisper before repeating it, lower. "Kaegen." In just a few moments, the pain in his leg practically vanished. Any insecurities, any wants and needs the boy had were gone. They were replaced by a single fixation, one of immense fear, but also one of slight pity. Kaegen.

He needed help? Kaegen glanced around, to look for a threat, but found nothing. His explanation came only a moment later when the boy told him what had happened. He had fallen, fallen from the broom and gotten hurt, like a bird flying into a glass window pane. How did that even happen, if no one was there to cause it. An accident seemed so foreign to the ravenclaw, it had been so long since he had attributed anything serious to mere happenstance. Everything was always someone's fault.

"What happened"

He ignored the utterance of his own name. He ignored the fear. They were things that he had grown used to, things that blew around him like a vague breeze. Everyone showed fear when they saw him, it was just something people did, now. It wasn't anything to comment on, it was a natural response to seeing what he was. To seeing a monster, no, the monster of Hogwarts' halls.

"Who else was here"

He didn't think anyone else was, but if he pretended he knew that someone was, then maybe he would learn more. It was a shot in the dark, but he couldn't quite recognize the boy, and unlike other times when he couldn't place a face, this time it was bothering him. Something the boy had said, maybe?

Presented with any other situation of a similar nature, it was doubtful that Lamik would have been able to let out a coherent string of words, much less articulate the situation he was in. For some reason, however, speaking to Kaegen specifically seemed easier to Lamik then what speaking to any other psychopath would be like. Not that he wasn't afraid anymore, it was just that after the initial shock the fear didn't entirely cloud his judgment and ability to... well... speak. Speak he did then, knowing full well that Kaegen was his best chance at getting to the Medical Wing quickly.

"I fell." Lamik choked out before forcing himself to speak more clearly. "I tried too hard and I fell off my broom. And I think-" The boy interrupted himself with a pained groan. "I think that I broke... or that I cracked or whatever you call it... I think that I broke my leg." The next phrase to come out of Lamiks mouth was one of the most difficult he had ever needed to say simply because of who he was saying it to. "I was going to call for help but you got here and-" He paused for a few moments, a fresh wave of tears streaming out of his eyes. "-and I need help. I need help."

There had to be more to this, just as there had to be more to anything the corpse-boy came across. Obvious truths didn't exist for him, unless they came about due to some convoluted circumstances. His mind was a tangled maze, and his reality warped to match. The odds that something just happened to someone were so small, almost inconceivable. The hurt of others hardly registered, it had to have something to do with him because everything important always did. And this looked important, therefore, something to do with Kaegen Deathmote.

But he could smell the fear, feel it. He could feel the hurt, the eyes that reminded him of an animal caught in a trap. That was not the face of a predator there on the ground in front of him, those were not the words that belonged to a mechanism in a complex snare that asked, no, pleaded for help. Kaegen's suspicions battled an odd instinct, that of a real, honest to goodness boy. He hadn't felt anything remotely similar in so long, he was reluctant to just let this weird feeling go.

It was familiar to him, something he knew had once bubbled around his head. How long had it been, anyway? The word choked out of his throat like a lumpy toad, driven by a desire to feel this long-lost friend of an emotion.

"...Fine"

Grabbing the broom that lamik had fallen from, Kaegen took off his large robe, revealing bags, pouches and leather belts criss-crossing his emaciated body. Without the large robe, his slender frame was even more obvious. A hungry little skeleton with sickly skin, and hate filled eyes. Thrusting the broom through the robe sleeve and out the bottom, he did the same thing on the other side, using his umbrella to make a haphazard stretcher. There was probably a spell he could use, but that would require focus, and at the moment, he had none. Placing the stretcher by the boy, he just glared. It took too much to ask the crippled griffindor in front of him to roll over, he felt too choked up.

Asking for help from Kaegen Deathmote was a longshot. Lamik thought it was, at least. After all, why in the world would he decide to help? It wasn't like Kaegen showed any signs of being particularly fond of the boy (not that he seemed fond of anyone). When the dhampir inevitably refused the Gryffindor rationalized that one of two things would happen. If he was lucky, Kaegen would just walk away. If he was unlucky... well hopefully it didn't come to that. Lamik Fillestar very much liked being alive. Fortunately for him, it seemed that he was either incredibly lucky or that there was somebody looking out for him. If he had to venture a guess Lamik would say that option one was more likely.

As he watched in shock and confusion, Kaegen actually agreed. It took a while for the boy to understand what was actually being done, but soon enough it became apparent that a sort of stretcher was being made out of the robe, an umbrella, and the school broom. The fact that stretchers were meant to be used by two people tugged at the back of Lamiks mind, but he figured that it was best not to question the help that was being given. As Kaegen placed the makeshift stretcher down beside Lamik, the Gryffindor couldn't help but notice how awful he looked. Hunger, pain, suffering- in Lamiks eyes Kaegen radiated that, and the confusion and sadness that built up in him momentarily distracted the boy from both the pain he was feeling and the help that was being offered. After a while, however, he pushed himself onto the stretcher with a cry of pain through gritted teeth and waited for whatever was to come next.
