The Day I Met Twig (Solo)

Robin had passed the last step up to the owlery, panting and gasping for air. She walked to the middle of the room, on the ground lay simple straw surrounded by many owls and their nests. There were so many different ones, black, brown, white, light orange and so many different varieties. Big, small, tiny, giant, it was so amazing.

Robin walked over to a brown and white owl by the window, it had been lazily curled in its nest, snoozing off. It was a very cute owl, it had light brown feathers all over its body with small specks of white near its head. Robin gently pet the small owl, as it woke up from its slumber and affectionately nipped on Robin’s thumb. Robin noticed a rusty nametag near the owl’s nest which read ‘Twigora’. “Oh so your name’s Twigora?” Robin whispered to the owl, “I think I’ll call you Twig for short”. As she spoke, Twig fluttered up onto the windowsill and poked at an empty tin bowl with her beak. “So we just met, and you’re asking me for food?” Robin said with a soft grin and a chuckle. Robin reached in her pocket, she had expected to have to feed an owl while she was there, so she brought a small bag of dried worms along with her. She reached the sack out of her pocket and poured a few worms into the bowl as Twig began to eat it.

While Twig ate, Robin had observed Twig’s nest, it had been made from straw and a few sticks and leaves for cushioning, there were a few dried fish fins and a mouse skeleton in the corner. On the side of her nest was a small dirty piece of paper that wrote ‘Twigora, Tawny owl, female, no owner, cannot be adopted, can only be used on the Hogwarts grounds. -Barnkeeper’. By reading those words, Robin was quite disappointed, this had been such a wonderful owl that Robin could only dream to own, and Robin hoped that she could’ve adopted her. At least, during her stay at Hogwarts she’d be able to interact with Twig and spend time with her. She decided to look on the bright side of things.

Robin decided it had been time for her to leave if she didn’t want to miss Astronomy. She sprinkled a few more dried worms into Twig’s bowl and pet her, as she yelled, “I’ll go and visit you tomorrow. Bye Twig!”. Robin ran out of the owlery in a hurry to get to her next class.

The next day, Robin had came in to see Twigora again. She was still sitting over at the windowsill where Robin fed her last day. “Perhaps she’s still hungry?” Robin asked herself as she reached into her pocket to get more worms. Robin came over to the window, without Twig noticing, and took a peek at the bowl, there was still a few worms left in it. She definitely wasn’t hungry, Robin came closer next to Twig and pet her on the back. Twig made a purring sort of vibration. Robin knew that was a good sign, she read far too many books about owls, to know that meant she was satisfied.

As Robin stroked her back, Twig laid down into a loaf sort of position to relax. Robin walked away from Twig, to check her nest again. It looked the same as it did, the day before. Robin picked up the dirty piece of parchment, hopping the note changed. This time it read, ‘ Twigora, Tawny owl, female, no owner, cannot be adopted, can only be used for letter delivery, on the Hogwarts grounds. - Sincerely, Barnkeeper’. Robin rolled her eyes and threw the note back in Twig’s nest. She walked back over to Twig, who had now been peacefully sleeping on the windowsill.

Robin looked out the window, she could see the empty Quidditch Pitch, she could see the Whomping Willow whomping away in the corner of her eye, she could see one of the many Herbology greenhouses, she could see the end of the Hogwarts property surrounded by the gnarly Forbidden Forest. She could also spot the lake that she had had to paddle through, on her first day at Hogwarts, the lake was surrounded with a couple of older looking students. “Probably studying.”, Robin said to herself. Near the Quidditch Pitch, she could see a woman getting many brooms out of the Broom Shed. She hadn’t thought much about it, “Maybe other students are having classes?” Robin whispered. She hadn’t thought much indeed, until, the woman gave the brooms to many young looking students in blue robes. Robin put her hand in her left pocket, and took out a silver pocket watch, which she checked at once. It turned out, she’s gonna be late to Flying Class if she’s not there in 5 minutes! She ran the to door right away and yelled “Bye Twig! I’ll try to see you later when I have Free Time!”.
