Housewarming
"Nobody's safe in a wizard's house." - Diana Wynne Jones
Marunweem, Scotland September 13th, '25 5PM, two hours until sunset
┏ ┓ Far south of Hogwarts Valley, on a hill overlooking Marunweem Lake, there rotted the dilapidated corpse of a once regal house. It was undoubtedly of wix design, considering its miniature observatory and countless "NO TRESSPASSING - VISITORS WILL BE HEXED" notices littering the property. Yet its halls had been hollowed out for years on end, its roof was rotted, while its grounds were nearly reclaimed by the encroaching wilderness. A fallen tree demolished part of the observatory ceiling. Even its once ethereal greenhouse was reduced to a metal skeleton, bowels a mess of broken glass and overgrown fanged geranium. It was now the property of a very proud, very unfazed Pericles Dralt. Conversations with close schoolmates- and a letter to one particular graduate- divulged how the eagle had spotted his "dream home" in the highlands during a flight. Security spells had prevented him from getting an up-close look, though faded signs along the property lines pointed him towards a contact. The former owner seemed eager to have the place off her hands. A tour wasn't part of their bargain, though that did nothing to detract from the warlock's certainty in his purchase. When presented with a hex-dispelling key and a gruff Are you interested or not, Pear had decided no further negotiations were necessary. On reaching the top of the hill, he cast a forlorn frown towards the damaged observatory- that was new- yet was otherwise emboldened by the sight. This was his idea of a "passion project". It was entirely his own, not an heirloom or gift from some rich relative, but something he had earned beyond his family's legacy. His father hadn't been keen on condoning the purchase, though Isaac was a beast of business Pericles knew how to bargain with. All he needed was the help of a few friends.
Housewarming invitations found themselves in the hands of a trusted few, with guests simply encouraged to bring along a snack or sweet. Pericles had conjured a table on the jungle of a front lawn. It bore bowls of Dirigible Plum blancmange, alongside skewered river fish, which he had painstakingly roasted over an open fire with wild thyme and garlic. Having spent the afternoon piling up the NO TRESSPASSING signs, he waited for his guests with obvious anticipation, scanning the skies. Yet those arriving would immediately notice something off, not with the food, but their hosts' ensemble. Pericles wasn't wearing party attire. Instead, he had on a telling combination of outdoor and battle gear. Even his potions holster and wand sheath featured. A curious smile was aimed at anyone who chose to arrive in formalwear, and though his welcomes were warm as ever, he launched into what his compatriots would recognize as an average Dralt stratagem conference. Nonchalantly dropping that he had not yet entered the house he'd purchased, Pear went on to present floor plans, noting that they should sweep in no less than pairs. "What do you mean?" had been his blindsided response to questioning. "My great-uncle nearly lost fingers to a clabbert at my aunt's Housewarming. We had to partially dissect the thing to get them back." It wasn't a matter of deception, nor necessarily misunderstanding: Pear's family just had a different idea as to what constituted a party. Wix properties- if not especially the abandoned ones- were known to house strange dangers. As far as he was concerned, combat was par-the-course for reclaiming a house.┗ ┛

Blue in English, Red in KoreanEun-ji would be lying if she said she hadn’t felt a prick of jealousy, when she first found out about Peri’s impressive purchase. The emotion was quick and mean but very much human. After all, she had long dreamed about buying a house far away from the golden chains her grandparents bestowed upon her years ago, but it was impossible. Unlike her classmate, she did not have the means to do it. In fact, it would probably take a long time before she could even think about it, considering her choice of future career. Still, once the initial envy passed, the witch settled on being happy for the ivory haired boy. At least one of them got to have their little sanctuary and Peri, for sure, deserved it.
And that was precisely why Eun-ji didn’t refuse to attend the housewarming when the invitation came. While not eager to socialize, she did want to celebrate his achievement. Although she did frown at the piece of paper for a moment after reading it. Snack or sweets? Please, you insult me. That was not how Koreans did housewarmings. If she was going to bring something, it was going to be proper sustenance. Little did she know that Dralts did their housewarmings even more differently. It wasn’t until she was standing in front of the property and the yard far more reminiscent of a wild jungle than a house garden, that the suspicions started creeping in.
By her own usual standards, Eun-ji was not exactly dolled up. She wore an elegant woolen dress, that was actually comfortable and warm enough for the dropping September temperatures. The only impractical element of her outfit were the heels but even then, she suddenly felt overdressed seeing Peri in the combination of outdoor and battle gear. “Ah…I wasn’t aware we were going to a war with your house.” The ballerina noted with a raised eyebrow. It seemed she was the first one to arrive and take the peculiar scene in.
The house was a mess but undoubtedly a beautiful one. She could tell once it was all cleaned and fixed up, it would become a sight to behold. Eun-ji just wished, she knew she was going to be one of the people to coax it into that state. She didn’t mind necessarily but had she known, she would have worn something different. Placing, the Dosirak lunchbox on the table next to Peri’s snacks, the witch decided to sit down while they waited for others to arrive. “I’m starting to think, it was a right choice to go a bit overboard with the food. We’ll probably need all the energy we can get for this one.”

Howard came descending from the skies as he touched down lightly with his broom. The landscape was familiar as he was not far from Hogwarts, but he didn't recognize much else. Before him was a gate. Cast iron by the looks of it or something like that. He looked to the symbol that marked the property. Nexus. Definitely a home and grounds that belonged to witch or wizard before his friend purchased it. Howard slung his broom over his shoulder and made his way into the front lawn.
"Hey, Peri!" He called out to his ally and gave a big, swooping wave with his free hand. Fortunately for himself, Howard never dressed formally unless he was specifically told to by host or invitation. Not that he looked poorly or disheveled. He just preferred clothes that were more functional. Since beginning his career as a tracker his whole aesthetic had become rather tactical. Forest green pants with all the pockets, sturdy boots and one of those tight fitting, black, long sleeved shirts that made him look slightly militant. Why would anyone dress this way to a housewarming party? Someone who had never been to one, that's who, but judging by Peri's attire perhaps he had made the right choice.
"Hey there." The Dhampir called out to the young woman also in attendance. "Name's Howard. I used to see you around Hogwarts, yeah?" She looked familiar, but he couldn't remember if they'd ever been properly introduced. "I'd have brought more potions if I knew we were waging war, Peri." Howard agreed with Eun-Ji's sentiment, but the smirk on his face indicated that he was down for whatever. "Woah, that looks incredible." When she presented the lunchbox and set it down next to some rather jiggly looking something a roasted fish, Howard's crimson eyes popped with delight. He really should invest in a cooking class. With pale, clawed hands he would reach into his satchel and remove a brown paper bag. "Ham sandwiches!" Most likely smashed from the journey, but packed with protein!
"Oh, Peri. I got you somethin' for the house too, mate." Another sifting through the satchel and Howard would produce a rectangular parcel tied neatly with twine. He had taken more precaution with this one than the ham sandwiches. When and if Peri were to open the package he would see a file in a simple frame. The contents were a copy of Howard's report to the ministry that had helped bring an end to an illegal poaching ring, an effort that Peri himself had helped him with. At the bottom, Howard had signed it.Peri,
