✽Avery was ready to get back onto the pitch. She has spent the entire summer not practicing Quidditch, and she was itching to get back onto the pitch. She missed the wind in her face and the adrenaline rush that came with playing the game. Practicing always made her day and helped clear her head. Especially with everything that had gone on lately.
She walked briskly out to the training pitch. Her broom gripped firmly in her hand. She had to get out there and practice before the heavy traffic came in. The fall match was coming up, and she guessed that she wasn’t the only one that needed a good practice before the first match of the season.
There was a light breeze today. Perfect for a good training session. Avery released the snitch that was gripped tightly in her hand. It had been a gift from her best friend, and it would finally be her first time using it for practice.
Once the little golden ball was in the air, Avery mounted her broom and kicked off. Ready for the twists and turns while chasing the snitch to begin. She just hoped it didn’t have too many tricks up its sleeve today. ✽

This spring morning, Epona had felt the urge to come and practise before her very first flying lesson. So she had a good breakfast, then dressed in her prettiest and most comfortable outfit to feel confident on her broom.
When she arrived at the Quidditch pitch, Epona took a deep breath. Her heart was pounding so loudly she could feel it in her chest. She had finally decided to take off on her broom, trying to calm the huge fear twisting her stomach. It was her very first time — with no training, no equipment. Just her, her broom, and the vast cloudy blue sky above her.
The first few moments were magical. She felt like a butterfly in the air — the light wind whipping through her red hair, the feeling of gently and slowly rising above the soft grass. But the magic ended quickly and suddenly when she lost her balance. She just managed to steady herself before falling, but her broom remained wobbly and wouldn't obey her. Panic grew inside her.
She felt her hands slipping on the smooth wood, her grip tightening with fear. She had no gloves to hold better, no goggles to protect her eyes — only her bare arms and a moody, unpredictable broom.
A stronger gust of wind shook her hard, making her lose balance again. Her heart skipped a beat, and fear surged inside her. She felt tears welling up. Frozen in place, lying flat on her broom, she began to scream louder and louder for help, so terrified she couldn’t stop.
Her breathing quickened, her muscles tensed as she tried to fight through this first terrifying challenge. She wanted to sit back up on her broom, but she couldn’t do it.
How could she possibly handle her first real flying lesson if even this small training was leaving her paralysed? It was going to be awful...
Epona had to slow down. She hesitantly lowered one foot to the ground, trying to regain some confidence, even if it didn’t help much. She knew this was only the beginning. Flying without gear, without training — it was a full journey, a real duty. And deep down, she knew she was going to love it. But for now, she felt disheartened. She had just faced her first true and intense difficulty.
She glanced around, frightened, hoping to see someone who could help her — someone who could comfort her and tell her it would be all right.

✽Avery heard screams of distress coming from under her. She stopped her broom mid air. Scarlett and gold Quidditch robes flapping into her face as she leaned over the side of her broom. She was surprised at first at what she saw.
There was a girl. Probably a first year by the look of her hanging on for dear life to her broom. She had probably never flown a broom before. Avery smiled as she remembered the first time she ever tried to catch the snitch. She had ridden brooms her whole life with her family, but riding alone was a whole new world.
To keep it short, she crashed hard into the ground after losing control of her broom on a sharp turn. Luckily she had a friend to help her get to the Hospital Wing and another to heal her broken leg. The laughter that followed the crash made everything better.
Avery decided it was now or never to save the girl. She could see the girl’s grip slipping, so she had to act fast. She zoomed down quickly on her own broom and hovered nearby. Not too close to be knocked down if she fell, but close enough to assist in righting the broom if necessary.
“Don’t worry. Just relax. Slowly start to straighten up, but don’t push the broom forward. It should right itself. Your balance was thrown off by the wind and tensing up.” Avery said calmly to the younger girl. Knowing that if she panicked, the other girl could panic and make everything worse for herself.
Avery wanted to say more, but didn’t. There was really nothing else to say until the girl was stable again. Maybe she would even let Avery give her some pointers? Only time would tell. ✽

Epona felt her heart beating faster and faster and stronger and stronger, trying to straighten up while listening to Avery’s precious advice, her hands still trembling, trying to straighten up and find balance while flying.
She breathed deeply, eyes straight ahead, fixing a point, trying to forget the gusts of wind whistling in her ears and the huge emptiness under her feet.
A tiny shiver crossed the beginning of the broom, it was finally listening to her, doing exactly what she wanted. Encouraged and supported, Epona finally started to feel a bit more at ease.
She dared to look at Avery, a small smile still timid but full of joy appeared on her lips. Maybe she wasn’t going to fall, maybe she would, but she was listening to what Avery was saying to her and that gave her a bit of hope.
Epona answered Avery with small friendly head movements, staying close to her without sticking to her either. It was obvious that she knew what Epona was feeling, and that comforted Epona a bit.
The beats of her heart just started to calm down, for the very first time she was flying.
Epona felt a flash of pleasure go through her, she suddenly forgot all her worries.
Flying was probably not only scary, it was also magical and magnificent, surely a feeling of being a bird, playing with the wind and feeling invisible.
She gently let a little lock of hair sticking out of her ponytail lift like a feather by the wind that was becoming light, closed her eyes for a few seconds and breathed softly to regain confidence in herself like when she had violently fallen off a horse and was learning to beat her fear of getting back on it.
Then she smiled for real and said in a low voice:
"Let’s go."
Determined to make it.
Without even looking at Avery, Epona felt she was starting to fly on her own, she moved away from Avery to leave herself some space.
She didn’t know if it was to test herself or if Avery knew she had gained confidence, but her heart was ready.
She was still holding on. She was finally flying alone.
She managed to do a few laps around the field, faster and faster, higher and higher.
She was finally free.
But freedom sometimes rhymes with danger.
As she was going faster and faster, gaining momentum and being at high altitude, a huge and immense gust of wind took her by surprise suddenly, she didn’t even have time to do anything.
Her broom shook a lot, she did too by the way. She felt something coming that she feared, but she still tried to straighten up. But the wind was stronger and stronger.
All of a sudden, she tipped to the side.
She was hanging on to her broom by the strength of her arms and legs.
She screamed, she cried, she yelled. Everyone was watching.
She started to panic. She was 20 meters from the ground and without equipment.
And suddenly, what had to happen happened: her feet slipped and found themselves down, and her hands couldn’t hold on.
She fell.
A long, very long scream was heard. Even a dead person would have heard it.
She fell to the ground.
The air was whistling horribly in her ears, the sky was spinning above her, everything was blurry, long.
She saw herself falling, more and more…
She screamed even louder.
The ground was arriving fast. Very fast.
Very, very fast.
Even too fast.
And finally, a crash.
Her breath stopped.
She almost lost consciousness.
She had tears in her eyes.
Her head had hit the ground.
She hurt everywhere: in her arms, her back, and especially her legs.
Then all of a sudden… nothing.
What was going to happen?
Was she going to go to the hospital?
Would Avery help her?

✽Avery smiled as the girl relaxed. Proud that her own past unpleasant experiences had helped someone else learn how to fly steadily. She knew all too well that flying wasn't easy. Even with years of riding brooms with her father, she still knew she had so much to learn. That had only been shown when she was a first year flying alongside one of her now teammates as she learned the ropes of Quidditch. She still could remember the amazement she had as the older girl soared above her and plucked the snitch out of the air.
Avery followed behind the girl for a short time. Watching carefully as she lapped around the stadium. Her confidence growing with every burst of the wind. Avery should have known what was to come. The wind was too strong. Too gusty for someone just learning the ropes of flying. She watched in horror as the girl fell from the sky. Her panicked screams filling the air. Avery darted after her, but she was too late. The girl had hit the ground with a loud thump.
Avery jumped off her broom before she even reached the ground. It was no time for safety precautions. This was a time of life or death. The girl had had a hard fall, and Avery had to make sure she was okay. With nothing to cushion her fall, she could be seriously hurt.
Avery collapsed onto the ground beside the girl panting heavily. Even after being "healed" from her asthma in her first year, she still wasn't completely back to normal. Making running one of the hardest things for her to do without passing out. She took a few steadying deep breaths before she assessed the situation. The girl was fading out of consciousness. Something Avery knew wasn't good.
"Hey, stay awake, okay? Where do you hurt? Do you feel like you need to go to the Hospital Wing?" Avery asked as she gently touched the girl's arms. Checking for any signs of pain that would give Avery the confirmation she needed. ✽

Epona slowly opened her eyes, emerging from a rather rough passage. Her vision was still very blurry. A massive pain ran through her entire right arm, her left wrist, her right ankle, her left knee, and her head.
She tried to blink, but even that caused her excruciating pain. Everything seemed to spin around her like a horse galloping too fast in circles.
She tried to gently move her hand, but an extremely intense pain tore a moan and a small cry of distress from her, as if her body was nothing more than a pile of stiff leaves.
She wondered if she was going to die today, here, on the Quidditch training ground. She imagined what the news would say on TV: "The young rider, dead on the training field." A small, sharp laugh escaped her.
Then she closed her eyes in pain and exhaustion. Her heart was pounding far too hard, like the hooves of a terrified horse striking the stone ground.
She opened her eyes slowly with great difficulty, even though it hurt. Each heartbeat echoed like a knife stabbing her chest, while waves of dizziness washed over her.
She heard Avery’s voice speaking to her, but every word sounded like a fog, and she couldn’t make out anything.
She barely managed to say, “My left wrist hurts, right ankle, right arm, left leg.”

✽Avery winced as the girl cried out in pain. She couldn’t bear to watch as the girl suffered on the ground. Was that how Claire had felt when she watched Avery crash her broom in their first year? She didn’t know the answer to that, but she made a mental note to ask her if the right moment came up.
Snapping out of her thoughts, Avery began to work on a plan of what she had to do. From the looks of how much pain the girl was in, supporting her as they walked up the stairs and into the wing wasn’t an option. That left two things. Carry the girl up the stairs and into the Hospital Wing or leave her there and find help. There was no way Avery would leave her alone, so carrying her was the only option.
“Okay, I know this is going to hurt a lot, but I’m going to carry you to the Hospital Wing. You’re in no shape to walk up three flights of stairs, and I’m not leaving you to find help, so this is our only option. I’ll pick you up when you’re ready, okay?” Avery spoke calmly. Hiding her own fear in order to keep the younger girl calm. ✽

Epona was extremely surprised but overly relieved and happy with his answer. She told him she was going to carry her to the infirmary up the huge and numerous crooked floors. Getting up there is already a real climbing game, but carrying a young girl alone up the stairs is a real challenge. Her eyes widened at the immensity of the climb, and she became amazed: the steps seemed to stretch to infinity and beyond, and the slightest creak of stone echoed throughout the corridor. They had to be extremely careful because at the slightest step they could both fall.Epona said kindly, with infinite gratitude and a little apprehension, "Don't hurt yourself for me. You might hurt yourself for me, or worse, we might both fall." Her voice trembled, like a dead leaf gently shaken by a leafy strand, torn between pain and gratitude. She continued in a very teasing tone, as if to lighten the mood: "I know what it's like to carry someone, and carrying them up stairs like this is a real challenge... even harder than a big Quidditch match."She tried to smile, even though a grimace escaped her. Nodding her head, she added, "Afterward, I'd be happy to let you do it, because it's true that I'm in a lot of pain... but take your time and come get me whenever you want. Don't hurt yourself for me, I insist."
A thought crossed her mind then: was a friendship beginning to blossom? She wasn't sure, but one thing was: she would always love this young girl who, that evening, had just saved her life. And for the first time in a long time, Epona felt a little less alone in this big castle.

✽Avery smiled kindly at the younger girl as she lifted her up in the air. "Don't worry. I'll never let you fall, and all I'll probably suffer are some sore muscles for a couple days, but that's nothing compared to what you're feeling. I don't think I could live with myself if I just left you out there and ran for help."
Avery walked carefully across the grounds and towards the castle. She knew that the three flights of stairs would be the hardest part of the journey, she had to persevere. Epona's safety and well being depended on that. Even if the girl tried to hide the pain.
Avery got a tighter grip on the girl as the ominous stairs loomed before them. Avery took a deep breath before mumbling, "Here we go."
The stairs were the hardest part. Each step she took up was a step closer to being at the top and at the Hospital Wing. That alone was pushed Avery to keep going. She couldn't let Epona or anyone else down. She had to be strong.
As Avery walked up the stairs with Epona in her arms she remembered the time her friend Claire had done the same thing. Though Avery had been supported and not carried by Claire, she still would never forget the relief she had when they had made it. That day had gone from being horrible to a day that brought her laughter and happiness. She had made two friends that day. Two good friends she hoped she would never forget. ✽

Welcome to Quidditch
Epona felt a tear roll down her cheek; Avery's words had struck her right in the heart. But how could Avery be so sure she could carry her up the stairs when she was quite heavy and, above all, when she was going to have to carry someone in a lot of pain? Epona wondered. And she worried about Avery; she didn't want her to have anything wrong with her, not even aches and pains, but Epona let her carry her and said nothing. Just a faint smile managed to appear on her cheeks, not a smile of joy, but a smile of immense gratitude. Epona wondered how Avery managed to carry her so easily! And a shiver of fear ran through what remained of her. Why was Avery holding her so tightly, she wondered. Was she afraid of making her fall, or was she simply scared? Epona, in Avery's arms, was in terrible pain. It felt as if blades were slicing through her, but she knew it was for her own good and that she had no choice. She was afraid she wouldn't be able to hold back her tears until dawn, or that she would lose consciousness again. She tried to hide her pain, but should she? Then she wondered, why was she doing all this for her, when she was still just two strangers? But she was sure she could trust her. What if she fell down the stairs! She tried to close her eyes and think of something else. When she opened her eyes again, she had finally arrived at the infirmary. She silently thanked Avery a lot; she really wanted to be examined.
