Daphne sat at the Gryffindor table for lunch. She'd started to get used to the chaos as much as she hated it for a long while. Now she tolerated it because she had to.

Well, she did think about just not attending and going to eat chocolate in her room, but she was sure a staff member would come and check her for that eventually. So she decided not to bother.

At least no one went to extremities for attention, she thought.

Not yet. But she doesn't realize she's jinxing herself.

She always sat by herself, chose to do so. She didn't like being around other people while they were eating, having a bit of a germ problem. Too many people talked with their mouth full or coughed while eating.

She looked at the food that was supplied on the table, lightly sighing as she tries to decide what to eat. She'd always been a picky eater, and embarrassed by that fact no less. She couldn't deny the food at Hogwarts was high-quality but she had a distaste for most high-quality food.

She finally settles on getting chicken and some bread on her plate, deciding that was enough for today's lunch. She silently ate, not looking at anyone. She figured today would go the same as it always did in the Great Hall.

She was hopelessly mistaken.

A «peaceful» lunch indeed! A morning with lessons and hard work had left Max starved. Finding his way to the great hall with his classmates and into the usual amount of ruckus. He would usually be the first one to jump on noise to find out both whom and what, as well as join in. But right now his only thought was food. After finding a place to sit and stacking up just about the most impressive sandwich he had ever seen he took it in hand and stood up. After all, meals were pride examples of laughter to be had and fun to be enjoyed. So, while biting off pieces of his sandwich he walked to the head of the tables and began telling jokes.

With a mouth full of food and smiling so broadly he could barely keep his mouth shut. «Hey! What do you call quidditch players that share a dorm? Broommates!» He didn’t really mind whom paid attention to him and not, as long as at least someone laughed. After getting little to no response to his first joke he scrunched up his face in a moment of thought before he with a wide grin jumped up on one of the benches and began walking along it. Raising his voice a few notches he retold the joke, and nodded happily to the response as he walked along the bench. « Who puts away all of the laundry at Hogwarts? The Sorting Hat!» He beamed at the attention and laughing responses he got. He could live off of this. No need for food or anything really, just jokes and comrades.

Walking further down the bench he found what he saw as the perfect spot to settle. So, next to another first year he plopped down on the table. But, if he were to do comedy from here, he should at least do a few jokes just for her first, right? He had to think back a bit to remember her name. Daphne, Annie, Stephanie… Something like that. Taking another bite of his sandwitch before placing it on a plate. He was always funnier with big gestures after all.

Thinking for a moment he considered his options. He wanted to do some call and respond jokes, but he might have to work up to it. «Hey, Knock, knock!» He took a breath while trying to stifle his oncoming laughter before rushing through the rest
«Who’s there?
Witch.
Witch who?
Which of you locked this door?!»
Upon completing the joke he burst out in laughter, slamming the table a few times, almost to punctuate how funny the girl should find it.

Daphne grimaces as the boy loudly shouts with food in his mouth, subtly scooting even further away from him and trying to finish her food as fast as possible.

Kerberyx can't help but shoot a glare towards some of the students who actually laughed at his jokes. Who finds that pathetic display funny? Not her, that's for sure.

Her plans to avoid the loud Gryffindor were soon crumpled.

She tenses as the boy plops down directly next to her. Daphne simply stares deadpan into his eyes as he waits for a response to his knock knock joke.

Her eye twitches as she winces at his burst of laughter, absentmindedly inching away from the boy, hyperaware of the saliva he could be letting out on the table.

Appetite officially lost.

She just blankly stares at him, too anxious about the potential germs to even process his joke, never mind laugh at it. The Gryffindor slowly slides her plate away from herself, the mere idea of eating after that show made her sick to her stomach.

She looks up at the High Table for a moment, wondering if she's allowed to even leave early. She almost imperceptibly sighed, more of a forced exhale, as she sensed another attempt coming from the obnoxious boy beside her.

This was going to be great, she figured sarcastically.

He noticed that his jokes fell flat, just not how much. He was waiting for laughter and smiles that did not come. That made him stop and rethink a bit. Maybe she didn’t like his joke? Impossible. He drew the conclusion that it must have been the type of joke. Not being humored by a knock knock joke was perfectly acceptable. He just had to switch up his plan a bit!

As she drew further away he scooted after with a widening smile. He knew just the joke! He began slowly, holding back the wide grin he had just moment earlier. «All the kids reached great heights, except for Bridget,» He took a short breath there to really amp up the anticipation. «She was a midget» The last part was said with a rather loud snort. At least he found his jokes hilarious. Upon receiving little to no positive response once more he puzzled scratched his chin. Perhaps he should simply fire away? Surely laughter would come from her sooner or later.

Leaning a bit towards her he fired off a couple more. «All the kids went to the moon, except Lars. He went to Mars» And finally, with the certain knowledge that if no other jokes made her laugh, this one would. Declaring loudly «All the kids wrote poems, except for Daphne. She couldn’t rhyme» There! The joke in itself was pretty lame, but who could resist when they were mentioned by name?

He’s still going…

She doesn’t so much as look at him while he continues to try and make her laugh, her gaze fixed on the table like it was something she had to study to graduate. Not even a flicker of amusement in her eyes, just discomfort.

She freezes visibly as she hears her name, and slowly turns her head to look at him in disbelief, eye twitching.

How did this kid even know her name? She’d surely never talked to him before.

She just stares at him deadpan, a slight curl downwards to her lip. Almost imperceptibly more than her usual resting face. If you looked closely her nose almost scrunched into a sneer.

“….Are you done yet?” She bluntly asked. She didn’t find any of this funny and frankly at this point didn’t care about upsetting the other boy.

She didn’t care for other students regardless but she thought it was small compared to the distress he’d unknowingly put her through in the span of 15 minutes.

No way he would actually figure out what her humor was, and his attempts were just annoying to her.

She stares as she waits for a response, face as empty as ever. Her usual shineless eyes seemed even darker out of pure irritation. If she weren’t so unnervingly stoic you might even think she was on the verge of snapping at him.

He continued releasing humored huffs of air as he waits for a response. There was simply no way she wouldn’t find it at least a little amusing! He placed his palms on the table behind him and leaned back on them as he waited.

As she shifts to look at him he is sure her expression is part of a bit she is doing to join in on the fun. He had not been tense waiting, but it is always nice to get the confirmation that someone like your jokes. So the tiny bit of tension he held in his shoulders release. It is not a huge shift, just barely noticable.

Maybe that is why the tone of her question catches him completely off guard. He almost startles before furrowing his brow in confusion. «No» The word is almost automatic, tone even. Then he seems to process her question properly. His head sink down a bit, suddenly feeling self conscious. «You dont like that one? I have others!» He is about to spew another ridiculous joke, but he thinks better of it.

«You really don’t like them, do you? …Any of them?» His voice softens a bit as he speaks. He didn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable, but what other way than loud was there to be? He considered this for a moment before adding «If you just like a specific type more, just tell me. I can adjust!»
