Meditation by the Water Open

I spent my first free day exploring the castle and grounds. I decided to make my way down to the lake and found the Boathouse. It is very quiet here away from the constant activity up at the castle. I admire the aged wood and surprisingly well-organized racks of boats, I might even be able to find the one that I rode in on my first night. It smells as one would expect, a dampness with a note of wet rocks and an overtone of fishiness. Normally smells bother me, but this is bearable and sort of reminds me of home in a way.

I wander through the boathouse for a while, looking for a semi-secluded, preferably dry area that I might be able to practice some meditation and reflection before heading back up to the castle. It would be nice to center myself to help myself focus on my upcoming lessons. Since arriving here at Hogwarts, I have had a growing excitement about the lessons I will be learning here.

I turn a corner between two rows of boats on racks and I step right into a perfectly dry, quiet area with a great view across the lake. I can just make out a few buildings, which is probably Hogsmeade. I sit and cross my legs. I take a deep breath and let my eyes drift closed. As I begin to take steady, controlled breaths, I listen to the gentle drips of water and slow sloshing just outside the boathouse. I linger in the wafting scents around me and focus on finding my heartbeat to tune within myself. For several minutes, the world around me slows and I begin to hear other, softer sounds.

Suddenly, I realize that there is a new sound. Soft footsteps approaching down the path to the boathouse. Someone else will be here soon and I don't want to startle them. I decide to stand up and begin to leave. I turn the corner out of my little alcove, see the doorway and continue to walk toward it.

My footsteps pick up, I go from walking- to jogging- to running- "I'm getting closer..." I thought to myself as I ran. The day hadn't started off as planned- while getting breakfast, I hadn't been paying attention to where I was walking- and being new to the house of Slytherin meant you didn't mess with the upper years- while carrying a small coffee that seemed to glitter, I had glanced away for a moment, tripping over myself and sending my coffee flying- right into an upper year Slytherin.

That's how I ended up here- running away from said Slytherin and his friends, who were trying to hex me for ruining the boy's new robes. The boathouse was the one place I could think of running off to, where they hopefully wouldn't find me or follow me, considering the amount of sirens that had been spotted closer to shore recently.

My breathing is heavy from running, my once soft footsteps turned into desperate, faster ones. I no longer cared if they heard me sneak away- I knew they wouldn't come here. As I reached the boathouse, I swung open the door, panting heavily before I spotted a boy standing, reaching for the door I had just swung open.

I froze before speaking through gasping breaths, "Who are you?".

Just as I reach for the door, it swings open and a breathless young blonde girl stands before me with a surprised look on her face. Startled, I pause and stare into her deep green eyes, as she says, "Who are you?"
Surprised by her sudden appearance and the question, I glance past her to see far up the path a small group of boys running down the path. The shock passes quickly, and I respond,
I'm Jason, who are you? Are you okay?"
Not waiting for an answer and feeling the urgency in the air, I grab her robe sleeve, gently pull her into the boathouse and close the door behind her. Realizing how forward and sudden my action was, I turn back to her and say,
"Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry for grabbing you like that. I don't mean to harm you."
I step back from her to give her a little space. I take the opportunity to look out the small window and see the pursuing boys looking around. It seems they can't find their quarry and may lose interest.
The air suddenly becomes thick and a chill runs through me as I realize that I am alone in a dark room with a girl. I turn back to her and for the first time get a good look of her. Slightly out of breath but otherwise looks very healthy. I can't tell in the dim light, but she still looks a little shocked and possibly puzzled by me. I walk a couple steps to the corner and sit on a crate.
"Again, I'm sorry if I scared you. I was just meditating here in the boathouse to get away from the activity at the castle for a while. You are welcome to stay and hang out. It seems like you were escaping something as well, if I'm not mistaken."

I had just finished my breakfast when an outrage arose from the Slytherin table. A girl about my age had been walking with a cup of coffee in her hands, and had glanced away from where she was walking for a second. She had tripped and the coffee soaked an elder boys robes. This wasn’t going to be good, I knew not to mess with Slytherin people, especially older students, but then again it was an honest mistake. I watched as the girl apologised, only for the boys to start chasing her out the hall. I stood up, not sure if I should get help or not. They looked very intimidating and began to shout at her as she ran out the hall.

I followed them, keeping my eyes trained on the girl as she ran. She was really quick! Speeding up to a mini jog, I watch as the boys see her heading towards the boat house and slow down, talk between them and turn around, annoyed. I hid behind a bush as they walked past, my breathing shallow as I forced my body to not move. I waited until they had turned the corner inside and disappeared from view before standing up and heading towards the boathouse.

After a quick jog, I slowed my pace as I approached the door, my heart quickening as my mind raced to conclusions. She would find it weird that I followed right? Maybe she’ll hate me and be really angry. I took a shaky breath before slowly opening the door. I walked in, two people turning to look at me as I entered.

”Hi” I say cautiously. My mind which had been racing and unsure with too many options a few seconds ago had frozen, leaving me staring between the two as I urged my brain to think. “I’m sorry if I’ve overstepped- I just wanted to make sure that you were okay,” I directed towards the girl, my heart still beating faster than normal. “I saw the boys chasing you, they’re gone by the way, they saw you come in and went back inside.”
