Waking up that morning, Valencia had never felt more ready for the day. Though she was a Slytherin, she was always quite cheerful- she felt it would make her day better. This was the day when she would first learn about transfigurations, and she couldn't be more excited. She quickly rolled out of bed and dressed in her green and black robes, indicating her Slytherin ranks. She fixed her hair and did a light coating of makeup- "Look good, feel good." -she always told herself. She headed down to breakfast, where she ate and sat with a few of her newfound friends before getting up to leave.
"Transfigurations, here I come." she told herself. Valencia began making her way to the classroom, following a small map that an older year had drawn out for her during breakfast to make sure she wouldn't get lost. Once Valencia found herself outside the transfigurations classroom, she took a deep breath and opened the doors. To her surprise, she found herself as one of the first students there, so there were many desks to choose from.
"Yes, first pick!" she happily exclaimed to herself as she chose a desk in the middle row close to a window, a strategic pick by her that made it look like she wasn't slacking off in class, but would also lessen her chances of being called on. As the rest of the class fills in, Valencia realizes the seat next to her remains vacant, everyone already having a friend or a housemate that they've agreed to sit with by now. Valencia frowns slightly, disappointed that no one has come to sit by her yet.
"Oh well." she muttered to herself, trying to shrug off the slight disappointment as she opened her textbook for transfigurations. The classroom board told the subject of the day: "turning a needle into ....", following this instruction, she began opening her textbook and taking out her wand- yes, class hadn't started yet, but she wanted to look like she had something to do since she had no one to talk to with the seat next to hers being vacant. "Stupid double desks..." she muttered to herself before hearing a voice speak up next to her, making her freeze.

“Do you mind if I…” Greta gestured to the empty seat poking out from behind an intelligent looking girl with golden hair cascading down her shoulders. Gosh, this is embarrassing… she thought as she stressfully tugged at her sleeves, which has become more and more of a tic in the first few days. If only I had payed more attention to the girl giving out free advice on those brain-splitting maps!
Considering that her inquiry was more rhetorical, given that every other seat was taken, she plopped herself down onto the hard oaken seat. A smile slipped from her lips exposing her toothy grin as she noticed the Slytherin badge. “My whole family’s Slytherin!” Greta whispered while pulling at her own badge, admittedly quite different as she was a Hufflepuff. “Uncommon match huh? My brother was oh so disappointed” She quietly mimicked her brother sarcastically, “ and your hair! It goes so well with the green!” She swooned.
“Sorry I’m talking far too much am I not? My sister says that… she’s much more of a slytherin that my brother even though she’s a squib! Don’t take that the wrong way though..!” Greta finally covered her mouth to stop her chatter. I hope she could even understand me through this idiotic accent!
Finally facing the board, she read through at the directions and turned back to Valencia with a shocked look on her face, “Where do I even start? A needle? Into a pen?” Greta pulled out her wand and started to attempt the task until her eyes met the wand that lay in Valencias hands, “Phoenix feather, is it? That’s so cool! You must have a story!” She gripped the polished wooden edges of the seat, praying there wasn’t any gum like in the muggle schools she attended before.

I blink- slightly surprised at the cheery girl that had approached me- a Slytherin. "Oh! Uh- yeah!" I had sputtered out quickly, rearranging my books so that there was space in front of the open seat for her to put her things. I slightly swallow from the embarrassment I caused myself from the muttering before offering her a warm smile.
"I'm Valencia, and it's nice to meet you!" I laugh softly at her rambles, "She was similar to me in personality." I had quietly thought to myself. "My mother was a Gryffindor, along with everyone else in her lineage, but I was sorted into Slytherin." I laugh, "So I completely get where you're coming from- only my mother didn't seem disappointed when I told her!". I pull out the chair for her to sit in next to me as I let out a small sigh.
"Honestly, I'm only just trying to figure it out, I've started reading about it so hopefully I won't embarrass myself!" I nervously laugh. "Oh and thank you! Yellow is totally your color!" A warm smile fills my face at her chatter and her accent, "Your accent is super cute by the way! Where are you from? I wiggle my wand at her compliments and glance at hers quickly, "Your wand is unicorn hair, right? I can totally tell! I smile at her before stuttering out, "Oh, and I would totally love for you to sit here! As Valencia looked at the girl, her curiosity only grew towards the cheery, accented Hufflepuff girl who dared to approach a Slytherin. "Maybe this class won't be too bad.." Valencia thought to herself.

“I can’t believe I finally managed to transform that needle! Last minute too! ” Greta carelessly wove her wand about while walking out of transfigurations. “I’ve always wanted to become an animagous, but it seems nearly impossible. My mother was one, she was an owl. All that effort just to be an owl?” her mood seemed to dippen as she mentioned her mothers past. To be fair, she always found owls fascinating, but due to her mother’s correlation with the bird she never was able to get over her grudge. “If you turned into an animagous, what creature would you think to be?”
After asking the question, greta turned to her own thoughts and pondered it herself. The woods lying right outside of Hogwarts’ Doors seemed to loom over her at that moment. What sort of monstrosities made their home there, and were the unicorns her brother spoke of legitimate or just a tale?
As the dewy morning sun shone on the 1st years backs once they entered the courtyard, the moss crawling up the frigid stone walls, Greta turned towards Valencia, “You think we’d find the animal were looking for in those woods?” she cocked her head in the general direction of the forbidden forest while half jokingly grinning from ear to ear.

I laugh at the girl's out-loud pondering, finding her personality refreshing compared to the usually cold-hearted Slytherins I'm around. I shrug nonchalantly, "You got the needle, and that's what matters!" I smile at her, holding up my successfully transformed needle as well.
I pause and think for a moment, considering her words, "An animagous, huh?" I pause thoughtfully, "Well, I think you could definitetly do it, especially with just a little practice!" I smile at her reassuringly, "If you can master changing another objects molecular structure, I'm sure you could master doing it to your own in no time!" I chuckle softly.
I smile at her as we continue to talk and she tells me about her mother, "An owl, huh?" I tap my quill to my chin thoughtfully for a moment, "If I was an animagous, I think I would want to be cat or some kind of small bird, that way if I ever found myself in trouble, I could escape easily!" I giggled at the thought of mischief, it wasn't rare to hear of Slytherins being mischevious, it just seemed to follow them everywhere, but most didn't mind, including Valencia.
As we walked, I kept my smile and eyes on her as we talked and laughed before I look towards the woods with an ambitious glint in my eyes, "We can find anything if we look hard enough." I smile, turning my head to face her again, "Just keep your head up and be aware, as long as you keep your eyes and ears peeled, we'll find the animal in no time!" I giggled as I joked, my smile hiding all signs of nervousness, and instead holding excitement and ambition. My grin widened,"Come on, I want to be in the front!" I laughed as I pulled lightly on her arm before weaving my way in between the other first years, making my way to the front of the crowd as we walked through the courtyard.

“Now? But our classes…” Greta lost the train of thought, her argument feeble in size compared to her curiosity of which creatures they’d discover in the woods. “You know what? How bad could it possibly go?” With much gratitude, she noticed a stone bench nearby, so she plopped herself down and shifted to the side so that Valencia had room to sit. It was only the beginning of the day and her feet were already sore. Those stairs took their toll! Greta thought to herself. “You know, about the forbidden forest… I wouldn’t mind missing History for that!” She convincingly looked up from the ground with a smirk, her accent fumbling around with the word forbidden and she regretted her stutter immediately. But the thrill of exploration didn’t let her squirm in embarrassment, and her body somehow regained its energy. “Lets at least go take a peek through the branches!” At once, she burst from her seat and pulled Valencia up from hers, “You don’t mind, do you?” Greta eagerly half walked, half ran, her loafers clomping against the wooden bridge that led them from the courtyard to the hills of the forest.
They arrived at the foot of the woods, the trees smaller and thinner in size and strewn about so that light still shone clearly through the woods. Gretas pace slowed, “We could also… you y’know, do this another time… if you want.” She asked purely out of her own tremble. Any Slytherin likely found this much less spooky than she did. After convincing herself that the whispers that seemed to leak from the greenery was purely her imagination, she turned herself back to her company, “You said you wanted a small bird? Or a cat?” Greta eyed Valencia standing next to her, gazing at the towering trees that hid all kinds of secrets. “Let’s make it a game! Say, whoever finds their animals first! For me, an owl… and for you?”
Laughing the nervousness off while slinging her bag over her shoulder, Greta hesitantly stepped into the wood. Crackle, Crunch! Greta flinched at the sound of twigs snapping. Did that come from the leafy ground beneath her feet, or from deep inside the echoing maze of pine trees. “Bonus points if you find a unicorn!” she giggled half-jokingly, “Wanna play it?”
