It was nearly Christmas, and as much as she was looking forward to it Emiline was also dreading it. The thought of holiday left her with many questions. Would her mom stop working and celebrate? Would she be living with Auntie Mia indefinitely? Would she even get any gifts? Would her sister Skye come back from her university to see her? It definitely soured the mood. But despite all her worries she was exceptionally good at hiding it from people who didn't know her. Simon, Emily and any others would notice instantly; her far off look, her notebook empty and her jacket open as if she was unaffected by the cold but the goosebumps showed that she was. With a sigh, Emiline focused back into the real world, gripping her pencil. She was trying to sketch a tree for her big sister Skye but her mind kept wandering. She sighs again. "Come on brain! Work with me here" She does a line in her notebook, its wonky and looks nothing like the tree. Loosing her temper, she chucks her notebook away from her into the semi-frosted ground. "UH!"

As if realising what she just did, Emiline sighs for the third time, stands up and walks over to grab her notebook from the damp ground. As she does the wind tugs at her hair making it fly all over her face and into her mouth. "Pleh" she spits out her brown hair and wipes it out of her mouth. Crouching down, she snaps up her blue-notebook and brushes off any dirt. She quickly scans the ground for her pencil but can't seem to find it. "Of course I would loose the pencil now. Of fricking course just my fricking luck!" She rolls her eyes and walks irritated back to the place she was sitting and scans the ground for the pencil. "Come on, its gotta be here somewhere...." A hint of panic rises in her chest as it was her big sister's pencil from her university and Skye always wanted her stuff back.

Avery loved the cold weather when it wasn't too cold, and she especially loved Christmas. Christmas and December was a time where she finally got to be close to her family. Everyone was always in a joyous mood which meant that the light would finally come through the dark and treacherous tunnel of her life. Her favorite part was always Christmas Day when her family had a big dinner all together. Laughter and Christmas joy filled the air as her and her family remembered the reason for the season. It was the time Jesus, her savior, was born.

Avery sighed as her breath became visible in the cold air. She smiled. That was her favorite part of the wintry weather. Besides the snow, of course. She was walking slowly and carefully. Not wanting to slip and hurt herself before she left for the holidays. No. That would not do. She had to be healthy and happy to see her family again. Especially since she had the feeling this may be the last Christmas she could ever share with her grandfather. He was so weak and helpless that Avery didn't think he'd last another year.

Avery looked down at the ground at the right moment. In front of her lying out of place on the ground was a pencil. Of course Avery picked it up and examined it. Avery had never really seen a pencil before. She normally used quills instead, but she knew muggles loved pencils and other interesting contraptions. Glancing up, Avery noticed an older girl. Probably a third or fourth year frantically searching the ground around her. Avery took one look at the pencil and another look at the girl and made an on the spot decision. Maybe the girl needed the pencil.

"Are you missing this?" Avery outstretched her hand. The pencil rested gently on it. She smiled.

Emiline looks up at a voice. "Huh?" Then she notices the pencil on the other girl's hand. "Oh my gosh, yes. Thank you so much! You just saved me from my older sister's wrath." She grins relieved. Reaching out, she grasps the pencil and tucks it into her robe pocket. Now the older year starts to feel the cold on this December day and shivered. Emiline smiles at the girl. "I'm Emiline, 3rd year Hufflepuff...don't you play quidditch for Gryffindor?" She remembers going to watch a match even if she wasn't there very long, this girl's face seemed to recognisable. "I feel like I have seen you before, I just can't seem to put my finger on it..." Her face crumples in thought for a brief second before she shrugs and stops trying to remember if she had seen or talked to this girl before. A common occurrence for Emiline as she is often talking to many younger years and older ones as she's so talkative and friendly.

A cold breeze rustles through the trees and seems to target the two girls, tossing their clothes and hair roughly about making Emiline shiver and tug her robe around her tighter. "The one thing I hate about this time of year..... is that its so freaking cold for no reason, like if it's this cold, its gotta snow like come on" She complained as goosebumps covered her skin.

Avery smiled. Glad that she was able to help the older girl. Especially from her older sister's wrath. Avery had never had an older or even younger sibling, but she had the feeling that the wrath of a sibling regardless of age would not be fun. "Happy to help. I'm Avery. Second year Gryffindor, and yeah. I'm the backup Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team." Avery smiled as she sat down in the grass. Glad to get off her legs though it was cold. It was still worth it to get to know the girl.

Avery thought for a moment where Emiline could have seen her. "Well, I get that a lot. I guess I've kinda been everywhere." Avery laughed lightly. It was true. She was one of those girls that was social enough to go around chatting with anyone and everyone that wished to chat. It was her way of getting to know people better and forgetting about her hard life and also a way to make new friends that could possibly turn into some of her closest friends. That was how she had met Mikey, Lya, Joseph, and all of her other friends.

Avery laughed again when Emiline mentioned how cold it was. "I agree. If anything, we really need snow right now. Then all the cold will be worth it. Anyways, what caused you to lose your pencil if you don't mind me asking. Did something happen?" Avery didn't want to push the older girl, but she wanted to know if the girl was okay.

As Avery waited for the older girl to respond, she took a quick glance across the grounds. It was as if Avery and Emiline were the only two people brave enough to face the cold and be outside. Everyone else was most likely in their common rooms or somewhere in the castle where it was warm and the chilling December wind could not reach. Avery was one that would love to do that, but she loved being outside more. Regardless of what the temperature was.

Emiline committed Avery's name deep into her mind as she had a tendency to forget names but remember faces. So if she'd see them again, she'd get that déjà vu feeling but not have a clue on what their name is, only recognising their face. Avery, Gryffindor. Avery, Gryffindor. The older year grins when the other tells her about 'kinda being everywhere' because she knew the feeling, she knew many younger years just because she would start a conversation with anyone and everyone who would listen.

Emiline looked up at the sky hoping to see the dark snow-heavy clouds but alas there was just those grey whispers of cirrus clouds across the powder blue sky. "Definitely no snow..." She says with a sigh.

With a sheepish smile, she explains why she lost her pencil. "I got annoyed and chucked my notebook and my pencil was resting in the pages in between ..... so it went flying... I was thinking about the chaos which is Christmas break" She sighs.... her eyes going glassy for a moment until she realises who she is with and blinks away the extra water welling up, trying to escape.

She seemed to hesitate, not knowing how much to say, so she says it as simply as she can, "My mom works too much...... and I'm worried. I am living with my Auntie Mia right now as mom keeps forgetting to pick me up and stuff as she's so tired from overworking herself. Its her boss's fault really, they keep giving her extra shifts, and she's too nice to say no." The wind blows gently this time like a soothing hug, as if sensing the emotions of the moment. "So.... yeah.... that's why I lost my pencil" She finishes lamely."

Avery listened intently to the girl. She had learned over time that listening to someone as they spoke of their troubles made everything fall into place. Avery understood the older girl's frustration. Avery herself had felt it many times. Especially after her muggle friend had died. Avery had blamed herself. She had told herself that if she had only tried a little harder to be there for her muggle friend that she wouldn't have ridden in the car and gotten in that accident.

Avery had come to terms with that anger after months of blaming herself. Yes, she could have spent more time with her muggle friend and yes she should have been there for her more, but even if she had done those things there was still no guarantee that the accident wouldn't have happened. Death was inevitable.

"I feel your frustration, but that's not the only reason I decided to help you find your pencil. Everyone has something special that connects them to a piece of themselves or someone else, and no one deserves to lose that." Avery smiled

Then she took a deep breath. The words she was about to say slid easily off her tongue. "I understand what it's like to have a mom that works too much. My mother works herself too hard as well, but it's on her own accord. I guess we all have our moments. Though I do hope things will get better for you. You deserve it." Avery smiled again.

Emiline's glum face twitched up to a small smile as the girl expressed her sympathy. And what she said made sense, the pencil was sort of special, in its own way it connects her with the muggle world, her sister and her inner-self through art. "You get it then...... Know what its like to make yourself dinner or wash up after right?"

The third year's mind sped up as Avery mentioned that she also has a mum who works too much. Maybe it was a normal thing for mother's to overwork then? Maybe I should send out a survey to see how many parents overwork...? She was getting off track, she focused back on the girl.

As the the brunette says about things getting better, hope that she had long since squished down flared up. "I'm not too sure things will get better..... She is burning out, and all I can do is watch her burn" Emiline sighed "I don't like doing the laundry, making dinner and all sorts of other chores, but I have to otherwise mum will be sleeping on rubbish or never sleep properly"

Emiline blinked, she was doing it again, offloading to anyone who would listen. Dammit. She didn't ask for the sob story so don't give it! Em thought annoyed at herself. Her grip on the pencil becoming tighter and her knuckles turning white, she also bit her lip to stop spilling her heart to this girl she'd only just met

Avery nodded. Though she had always lived in a pure blooded house full of magic, that didn't mean that she hadn't had her fair share of hard days. Days where she was home alone and had to make herself dinner and hope the house didn't burn down. Times where she had to figure out how to wash her clothes when there was no one around her to magically make them clean. Times where she had cried herself to sleep at night wishing her mother would at least pay a little attention to her one and only daughter.

"Yes." Avery spoke softly. There were no other words to explain how she felt and how she knew what it felt like to take care of the family when it seemed no one else cared to do it.

Avery at that moment realized something. The day her mother had swamped herself into her work. That had been the worst day of Avery's life. It was the day she had lost her mother and had become alone. Though the pain only made her stronger. It reminded her that if she ever had kids one day, she would smother them with the love she had never received from her own mother. She would never let her kids feel the pain of rejection from someone that was supposed to love and care for them.

Avery looked up at that moment and realized how hard things were for Emiline. She was the rock of her family. The weight rested on her shoulders as she was forced to watch her mother fall apart before her and there was nothing she could do to help. Avery couldn't imagine how that felt.

"Wow. I can't imagine feeling that way, but don't worry about telling this to me. I'm right here and ready to listen if you need someone. I'm always here."

Emiline smiles ruefully, bittersweet about her mother overworking. It felt like the other girl, Avery was in a similar position to her. The softness of her single-word response echoed understanding. Echoed shared memories. Echoed a mirror image of mothers.

The older brunette found herself stepping closer, then hugging Avery. "Thank you. I really needed to just..... tell someone that isn't just Simon" She steps back after her soft murmured words. "But I just don't always know if the person wants me to share or if they have other things to do...... You know?" Emi sighs, not really knowing how to read people better.

Trying to lighten the mood she had brung down, she went back over to the bench she was sitting on to grab her half-started drawing of a tree. "Do you maybe.... want to sketch with me?" Emiline tucks the pencil behind her right ear, giving the artistic aesthetic effortlessly.

The wind picks up making the third year shiver and glance up at the sky. The weather at Hogwarts known to be unpredictable at the best of times. Unlike last time with Eonaria, Emiline wouldn't enjoy this cold rain. She glanced back at Avery hoping either for a drawing session or to maybe go indoors if the weather decided to be any worse.

Avery was surprised at first that the older girl had embraced her, but it was only for a fleeting second. Avery quickly embraced her back. Sending the strength and love hopefully towards the other girl. She wanted the older girl to know that Avery had meant what she'd said. She would always listen. It was true. That was the way Avery rolled. She always listened and gave people the benefit of the doubt because that is what others did for her.

"I know how you feel. Sometimes it doesn't feel right to tell someone what's going on, but I've learned that the weight really does leave your chest whenever you express the truth. It's eye opening honestly." Avery smiled.

Then the older girl asked if she wanted to sketch. Who was Avery to say no? She loved sketching though she probably was far from good at it. "Of course! I'd love to sketch with you! Though, I warn you, I'm not the best at sketching. If we need, we can always head inside. It's a bit chilly out." Avery laughed lightly then smiled again.

This was the first time in a long time that Avery felt so lighthearted. There was just something about how easy it was to be around Emiline. She was one of those people Avery knew she would be spending more time around. There was no denying that!
