He's My Brother
september 1, 2019. pv @Scott Alexander.
Ami was, for the first time, genuinely excited for school this year. She’d spent a good chunk of the summer with Scott, of course, but traipsing around America had a different vibe than running down the corridors of Hogwarts, avoiding homework. Well, Ami was usually the one who was avoiding homework. Scott was a good kid, as was Alexx, and all her other friends. Really, Ami was the only one who had bad grades and an automatic attraction for trouble. Or, at the very least, she couldn’t seem to keep herself out of detention. As she pushed her suitcase, backpack, and Leo’s cat carrier on the trolley along Platform 9¾, she couldn’t help but wonder if maybe this year would be different.
But wasn’t that how all coming of age novels started? She didn’t want to be the stupid protagonist in a stereotypical book. Even though she'd changed over the summer, she definitely hadn't matured at all. The most notable change, obviously, was her hair. Short and choppy bangs, and her hair had been cut shorter (thanks to Scott's insistence). There were lots of new cuts and scrapes on her elbows and knees from experimenting with new skateboarding tricks, and a second rook piercing had been added on her left ear. She had grown, too, now standing at a staggering 5'7", towering over most other 13-year-olds. Her shoulders were starting to fill out a little more, too, and her muscles were definitely on their way to "impressive" status. Her grey hoodie under a black and yellow flannel gave her the appearance of a TikTok boy, along with her high cheekbones and sharp jawline. Before long, she'd be the manliest of them all! Definitely not your average protagonist.
If anything, Scott was the protagonist. Blond-haired, blue-eyed, with good grades and a charming smile that people loved… yeah, Scott was the protagonist. Shaking her head slightly, she glanced at her mother and Scout walking beside her- well, her mother was walking, and Scout was being pushed in the stroller, cooing as he peered at the world around them. "You know," Abella said casually, glancing at Ami’s ‘thinking face’, "It would be nice if you could, y’know, maybe make some new friends?" Scout cooed, as if in agreement with her, clapping his hands excitedly.
Ami shot a dirty look at her mother, rolling her eyes. "I have Scott, and Scott’s enough. And don’t make any jokes, mom, we all know I’m gay. He’s like my brother- uh, sorry, Scout."
"Yes, Ami dear, I know you and Scott are only friends, you don’t have to keep clarifying that with me," Abella sighed.
"Well, pass the message along to Grandma and Grandpa. They were so annoying on the phone, mom. Like, crazy annoying. Girls and boys can be friends, especially if at least one of them is gay." Pushing the trolley more insistently, the Procoppio family made their way towards the train, lapsing into silence. As they reached the drop-off point, Ami paused, before turning to her mother. "I'm going to uh, go now. Bye."
"Come here," Abella said in exasperation, opening her arms for a hug. "And give your brother a kiss, too. He's going to miss you, Ami." The Hufflepuff reluctantly let her mother embrace her, squirming out of her grip as quickly as possible and dodging a kiss on the forehead to crouch down, now eye level with her baby brother. "Bye, Scout, m'boy. Stay in trouble for me, will you?" she said quietly, letting Scout grab her finger as she studied the little boy's face. Fat and chubby, she had no doubt that with Scott's influence, he'd turn out to be a very good man, indeed.
Their summer in America had only been one adventure after another. After a brief reception by Abella at King's Cross in London, they'd all jetted across the Atlantic, Scout included, to Chicago. There, Ami had taken Scott to all the iconic places: Hancock Tower, the Disney store, some of her favorite diners and restaurants, the best skatepark in the whole state... Of course, they'd gone to a drag show with her father after Ami had heightened Scott's respect for drag, but that was a whole other matter. Then it was road-tripping, through Texas to see the Johnson Space Center and a niche band that her dad was sort of into, and then down to Florida, where Ami had forced Scott to stand in line with her for Space Mountain at least three times. It had been a great summer; at least, that's what Ami thought. Who knew if Scott had enjoyed it or been traumatized for the rest of his life? He was way too polite to actually say anything like that to someone's face.
Thank God he hadn't been too angry when Ami had stormed up to Ben and called him some... creatively worded insults. But, Scott had actually opened up about how he felt for once, and Ami intended to act on it. Wasn't there a quote about actions and not words, or something like that? She really liked that quote, even if she didn't know exactly what it was.
Grabbing her bags and Leo, Ami straightened up, peering around the platform for those familiar blond locks and that persistent grin. Spotting just the boy she was looking for, she grinned at her mother toothily. "I found Scott, so I'm gonna head out, now. Stay bad, Scout!" she hollered as she pushed her way towards her best friend.
Leaving her suitcase with the porter, she slugged Scott a little too aggressively in the shoulder as a greeting, a massive smile already on her face. "What do you say? New year, same us?" she said cheerfully, glancing around the platform to see if she spotted any other familiar faces. Seeing no one else she could rope into their shenanigans, she turned back to Scott. "Let's go grab a compartment before all the stinky first years gobble them up. Where's Lady? Leo's been pining, the spoiled little brat." Leo mewled from his cat carrier, his nose appearing at the mesh door-flap as he smelled the presence of his feline friend.

He's My Brother
His trunk, and he realised this mid-step, lay open between his feet on the busy platform. His mother had apparently decided that now was the time to once again rummage through it, sat as she was on her knees and getting her light blue skirt dirty (which she allowed herself to do only like this, once a year). Scott didn't even care to ask what she was looking for this time, but merely sighed and smiled at the amused looks his father and brother were giving him over her back.
Gretchen waved something triumphantly above her head before neatly replacing it in his trunk (Scott still didn't check to see what it was), and closed it with a flick of her wand before jumping to her feet again. She brushed her knees, turned to glare for a second at her sniggering husband, and then threw her arms around her youngest son with a coo."Oh! There! I found it. Thank God. I really wouldn't have let you go without it. Well, I suppose I could've sent it to you... but then, what if you'd wanted it on the train?"
They were the same height now, Scott was sure of it. It wasn't something he could really prove while she was wearing heels, which she always was (even more so these days, which only reinforced his suspicion), but even if he could- he supposed it wouldn't really hurt anyone to tilt his head down a little so she could rest her chin on it still, for just a year longer.
Over her shoulder, Scott gave another smile to Silas. Even though his brother had promised over and over to stay long enough to see him off, as he'd done for him and Ben every year since he left school himself, Scott hadn't dared be so sure. Silas and his father had discussed it as recently as the night before, whether or not it'd be best for him to return to Estonia already then. Jacob had argued that Silas was already missing far too much by staying with them for so long, but Scott knew his father better than to believe that's actually what he was worrying about.
Jacob had been giving his son an out.
The weeks that Silas had spent in London with the rest of Scott's family had been tense, to say the least. Scott had felt it. Gretchen had definitely felt it, and if there was one thing that could alter Jacob's otherwise so equable character, then it was something causing his wife distress.
For the largest portion of their few weeks together, Silas and Ben hadn't exchanged a single word with each other. And Scott could see now, over his mother's shoulder, how his oldest brother was searching the many windows of the train beside them with obvious concern.
Scott couldn't help but wish they'd at least said goodbye to each other.
But then, finally, his mother let him go. Though both her hands remained on either side of his face, cupping it very unnecessarily. Scott squirmed.
As his mother bit her lip in trying to think of something new to say, Scott felt his father's hand land on his shoulder."Oh no you don't! Let me have this. Let's see..."
Perhaps it was the Irish in him, but Jacob was definitely less talkative than his wife (and, as all could attest, her son). But the smile he gave said a lot anyway. As did the one Scott then got from his brother, as Silas took to stand next to him.
Silas had whispered this, under the sound of their mother's humming. Scott was about to laugh, because no one had ever said that to him without intending it as a joke, but as he followed Silas' gaze from his own and to the windows of the train once again, he nodded in understanding."Stay out of trouble, ok?"
Then, as his mother apparently embraced leaving their goodbyes at that, Gretchen began wafting the air around her as she always did."Don't worry."
And off they were.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Then something hit his shoulder. Hard.
"Ouch!"Scott's grimace turned into a wide smile in what couldn't have been more than half a second."What do you say? New year, same us?"
Rubbing his arm in mock agony, the boy leant forward to half-hug-half-pat his friend hello. She couldn't possibly look very different from when he last saw her of course, but for some reason Ami continued to make a new impression every time they met. He always needed a second, and the second was always worth it.Laughing, Scott picked up his trunk from where it stood on the ground, and gestured with his entire arm to the spot before which it had been standing."Let's go grab a compartment before all the stinky first years gobble them up. Where's Lady? Leo's been pining, the spoiled little brat."
Lady Madeleine stretched her back tiredly, apparently understanding their cue to get a move on, and made an inaudible yawn before starting to circle Scott's legs.
Picking her up too, Scott chuckled and turned back to Ami with her pressed against his chest. "New year same us" really was, however unaware she might be of it, the very best he could wish for at the moment. Something he'd been waiting for quite dearly, for almost three weeks."She's missed him too, I'm sure. She's just... not very expressive about it. Bear in mind, she's French. Not Italian."Happy to finally be making his way on board the express, Scott couldn't help but grin all the way from the platform steps and through the aisles. He only stopped smiling for the two seconds it took to heave his trunk back up his hip outside one compartment in particular, as he accidentally took a look inside it."Compartment it is."
No wonder Silas hadn't been able to spot him. Ben was sitting by a window facing away from the platform.
Hurrying, so not to be noticed (and, admittedly, so not to get hit in the shins once more by Ami's horrible cat carrier) Scott rushed forward until they reached what could've very well been the last empty compartment of the train. Sliding the glass door open with a horrendous noise, Scott bowed theatrically to his friend, gesturing for her to enter first.

He's My Brother
"Oh, hello, Lady!" Ami cooed, her face brightening up at the sight of Scott's companion. "You look marvelous, as always, you know that? Leo, say hi, you imp." Leo yowled something that was certainly foul from inside the carrier, and he and the mesh door seemed to have a little tussle as he attempted to escape. Needless to say, the carrier won."She's missed him too, I'm sure. She's just... not very expressive about it. Bear in mind, she's French. Not Italian."
Of course, all the way through the train cars as they searched for an empty compartment, Ami was chattering away like some middle-aged mother having brunch with other middle-aged mothers. If she had just stopped to actually pay attention for once in her life, maybe she would've noticed Scott's smile fade, maybe she would've noticed just who it was inside that one compartment they'd passed by. It seemed, however, that she had rolled a 0 on her perception check this time around.
Stepping into the compartment, she put her trunk on the overhead rack and waited until Scott had shut the door before releasing her feline friend from his confines. Leo came out with an unearthly screech, hissing and spitting like no tomorrow. Finally realizing that Lady was definitely staring at him in disdain, he settled down, leaping onto one of the seats by the window, curling up placidly as Ami sat down next to him, leaving her backpack on the ground.
"I've gotta say," she had to say, "Mom's really worried about my grades this year, but at least I kind of understand Transfiguration, now? I studied a lot over break, mostly while you were asleep, but I swear I did! I hope it pays off, you know... Jeez, Scott, I wish I was more like you. Mom loves you to death, you know- all your politeness and good grades, and your big smiles... I think you remind her of herself when she was younger. At least, a nicer version."
Retrieving a small notepad and a pencil from her backpack (to be completely honest, she still hated quills with a passion), Ami scrawled 'Scott and Ami's Great Adventures: Season 3' across the top. "We need to do things this year, Scotty," she decided. "We need tales to tell your kids that they'd never believe, except they'd know that we were friends so of course, we did these things. Maybe we can shave your head? No, your mom would kill me..."
Leaning back against her seat, Ami tapped the end of her pencil against her chin thoughtfully as the train pulled away from the station, the familiar huffing and puffing of the engine echoing through the air. "Do you have any ideas?" she asked her friend, her lips pursed like a lemon. "Or maybe we can talk about something else, anything you want! Honestly, I'm excited for summer vacation already, and I want to learn more Ed Sharon songs on the guitar because, to be honest, he's a pretty good songwriter. Very British, that one. Do you think I'll finally stop sounding like John Mulaney, and sound more like... like Elton John? We like Elton John, right?"
Her trail of words had seemed to finally trickle to an end, although the gears in her head still seemed to be churning. This was how it seemed to always be, nowadays- a never-ending flow of meaningless chatter that Ami felt that she simply had to vocalize. ADD, her mom called it; a permanent sugar high, her dad explained. But to her, it was just how she needed to function, and she refused to take medication for it. Scott was pretty used to it by now, though... right?
Whatever. They were best friends- he'd just have to deal with it, if he didn't like it. Another little tidbit popped into her head at the last second, and she opened her mouth to add more to her already spiraling tangent. "John Mulaney's funny," she added, although this was with a note of finality in her voice. "I wish he'd been in Chicago when we were there, but I guess luck wasn't on our side." There! All of her thoughts were out in the open; she'd let Scott sit, process, and digest them all for a little bit before she opened her maw to bombard him with more later.

He's My Brother
Ami was rambling on, in a way almost comparable to his own, and Scott would be lying if he said he wasn't enjoying it immensely. It meant, he thought, that she was as excited to see him again as he was to see her; and that thought was quite comforting to him at the moment. After all, excited was supposed to be is default! He'd missed it.
All in all, his friend was (as expected) doing a wonderful job of distracting and cheering him up. He'd wished for her to bring up a subject before and she'd just thrown at least a hundred his way- the first, as soon as he closed the compartment door after the two of them.
"I've got to say, mom's really worried about my grades this year..."
Scott had only met Ami's mother for the first time this summer. During the few moments he'd spent in her presence, she'd reminded him an odd lot of his own, being that they both looked quite similar: blonde, slender... but at the same time, she'd seemed so entirely different to him. Especially with Ami. They ...spoke differently to each other. Different from how he and his own mother did. But other than the fact that Ami called her something so alien as mom, he couldn't actually put his finger on what it was that made such a difference.
He'd always said mother, himself. Jacob, on the other hand (and he hadn't often considered this), was dad... To Silas and Ben of course, he was da. When either of them felt like messing with Gretchen they'd put on even more of an accent and call him Oul Fella. Scott smiled.
"I like your mother, too." He concluded, after Ami mentioned how keen Abella had apparently been on him during his stay. It made him happy too, to know he was coming off as polite as he was trying to. Nervously, on the other hand, he pretended the last thing she added escaped his attention...
Scott had taken the seat opposite to Ami's as soon as his trunk lay steady on the rack above it, and was now sitting with Lady Madeleine in his lap as he watched his friend move on to another subject. She didn't look much like her mother, either... They'd discussed this, he remembered, already in their first year: how she looked so much like her father and he his mother. He couldn't help but wonder, though, wether that was as true anymore.
"We need to do things this year, Scotty. We need tales to tell our kids that they'll never believe, except they'd know that we were friends of course. Maybe we can shave your head? No, your mom would kill me..."
Sitting up straight again, with Lady Madeleine leaving his lap with what could only be described as a feline tut, Scott stared at his friend warningly.
"Yes. She would." He emphasised. "And so would I, mind you. You might've been able to pull off the suddenly-without-hair-look but I," Scott ruffled up his coiffure with his hand and swayed his head back and fourth theatrically. "I need this."
Instantly regretting this move, Scott quickly combed through his hair with his fingers to replace it with an upset grimace. It was longer than it had ever been now. All his life so far, his mother had sat him down in the kitchen to cut it off before the front reached his eyebrows (or rather, she'd charm a pair of scissors to do it for her), but before the beginning of term this year Scott had asked her not to. She had been... sceptical. Pleads had been made. His brother's name had been mentioned in warning. Although this only made Scott laugh, because if it was his hair turning into something in the likes of Ben's that she was worried about then she needn't do so at all.
We like Elton John, right? John Mulaneu's funny. I wish he'd been in Chicago when we were there, but I guess luck wasn't on our side."
Was this how other people felt, talking to him?
Smiling only one more time, because it sure felt like the redhead in front of him was running out of words, Scott nodded patiently as she mentioned at least two names he recognised. It was wonderful all the same.
"Sure felt like luck was on our side, to me." He replied. "Felt like luck was on our side the entire time. At least, that's what my letters home will tell you. If you ask my mother, she'll think it didn't even rain on our trip over there. I swear, she'd have sent for someone to pick me up. Claim the rainwater in America could be acidic, or something like that... I did miss her though. I won't lie to you. Don't know how Silas manages..."
No one in Scott's family enjoyed travelling and being away as much as his oldest brother did. No one had less of a hard time with goodbyes. Scott had to assume he got that from Anna, but couldn't know for sure.
"It was pretty much thanks to him that I got to go at all, you know. He was the one that convinced Mother. Had to convince dad, too, but that didn't take as long."
Scott smirked fondly as Lady made her way back onto his lap again, turning her head towards his stomach and away from her feline friend. Perhaps they had had an argument.
"I do, in either case, expect that returning to school a more well-travelled and versed young man should only do me favours. I almost got the accent down, remember? As for you I think it's take a few more years to shake it. Coffee.... Mom...." mimicking his friend, and quite poorly so, Scott gave a short, strange laugh.
He was happy, he really was- but he also felt tired. That too, was a relatively new feeling.
And he didn't care for it.
"Lessons in accents, that'd be a "thing". Though you probably won't want mine. It's the painful result of two parents trying their absolute best to make sure the other's dialect didn't leave a trace, and failing. If you want to hear a proper one, spend an evening trying to understand what my grandfather says. The muggle one. Mother has tried since she first met him but still just smiles and nods until she can ask one of us what he's on about. Then it usually turns out to be local fishing politics and she still won't understand. ...The beard doesn't help."
Sinking further into his seat and, to his great upset, yawning- Scott pulled out a chocolate bar from one of his pockets, broke off a piece, and held it out for her. He was really trying his best to act as normal as he could, because if she asked, he wasn't so sure he'd be able to name what was wrong with him.
This, he decided, could not turn out to be his new default.

He's My Brother
Of course, he did. Everyone under the sun liked Abella Marie Procoppio- even when Ami was angry with her mom, she still loved her. It was just that pureblood charm she was born with, the way she could smile in any situation like she was the happiest person in the world, the way she could talk about anything and everything, no matter the topic. Ami could only wish that she'd gotten even half of that charm, although looking at it from another person's view, she definitely didn't. Instead, she was more like her father- loud, talking without thinking things through, and more prone to punching than placidly compromising. However, at least she had her mother's unnerving ability to march up to anyone and initiate a conversation."I like your mother, too."
Ami laughed as Scott ran his hand through his hair, and she idly wondered just exactly what she'd look like if she cut her hair as short as Scott's. She could remember a time when even the mere thought of short hair would've made her feel sick to her stomach, but that was when she had been younger and even more immature. She had no idea who she was, and really, she still didn't- but at least the picture was getting clearer. Ami had learned to come to terms with the reflection she saw in the mirror everyday, and knew that her hair was probably the least important indicator of what type of person she was."Yes. She would. And so would I, mind you. You might've been able to pull off the suddenly-without-hair-look but I... I need this."
And really, it was what was inside that counted. Right?
And really, that much kind of got her thinking, as well. Did she... did she ever really miss her mother when she'd grown up in America? Ami didn't think so, to be honest. Her mother had always visited her during the holidays, and liked to drag her across the world on various adventures when she didn't have school, so there was never really a gaping, mom-shaped hole in her life that wasn't quickly filled whenever Ami had a vacation. And now that she was at Hogwarts, there really wasn't much time to miss anyone at all."Sure felt like luck was on our side, to me. Felt like luck was on our side the entire time.
Maybe she and Scott simply didn't have the same type of relationship with their respective parents- Lucas and Abella had always let her be relatively independent, even bordering on the type of parents who insisted their children call them by their first names so they could feel younger than they actually were.
"I'll have to thank him the next time I see him, then," Ami said with a wide grin. Scott's whole family was something out of a children's book, in her opinion. There was Scott, her best friend, who was like the Watson to her- well, she definitely wasn't Sherlock, but he was her Watson. Loyal, steadfast, and simply amazing all around. Ben was like Moriarty- misguided, rather strange, and someone she occasionally kind of wanted to punch in the face. And although she certainly didn't know the other three members of the Alexander-Jones family as well, she imagined Gretchen as the lovely Mary, Jacob as the smart-in-his-own-way Lestrade, and Silas as Mrs. Hudson. Was Silas really a Mrs. Hudson? ... probably not, but she couldn't think of anyone else he possibly could be."It was pretty much thanks to him that I got to go at all, you know. He was the one that convinced Mother. Had to convince dad, too, but that didn't take as long."
Why was she thinking about Sherlock, again? Oh right, comparisons. Well, then who was she? Maybe she was Mycroft- just sort of there, in the background of their lives. She knew she wasn't one of them, not even close, but at the same time, Scott just felt like family to her. Like her brother- well, she had one of those now, so maybe an older brother.
She couldn't help but laugh at Scott's pretty awful imitation of her accent, although it wasn't like she could do any better. When she'd first moved to America, she had tried her hardest to shake away her British accent as quickly as possible, and now her American simply wouldn't leave, no matter how hard she tried to adopt British sounds and phrases. "You've forgotten 'y'all' and 'dude'!" Ami chuckled good-naturedly, wracking her brain for phrases that were inherently "American". Alas, she couldn't think of anything off the top of her head, but she knew that a time would come where she'd fire back at full force."I do, in either case, expect that returning to school a more well-travelled and versed young man should only do me favours. I almost got the accent down, remember? As for you I think it's take a few more years to shake it. Coffee.... Mom...."
Ami shrugged her shoulders. "Sounds like my dad and my grandparents too, though it's the other way around. You know my dad's crazy beard? Yeah, my mom's parents can never understand a word he's saying, which is crazy. Like, it's not like he speaks with a southern accent, or anything; they just pretend they can't understand him because of his American accent." She didn't really understand how truly awful that was, although there was a little voice in the back of her mind that timidly suggested that maybe it went beyond the fact that he was American- after all, the Maries were all purebloods."Lessons in accents, that'd be a "thing".
She crinkled her nose at Scott's offering of food, shaking her head. She glared at him before it melted into a teasing smile, as she reminded him gently, "Vegan, remember? But thank you." Reaching into her bag, she grabbed an apple, cleaning it with her sleeve before biting into it with a crisp crunch. "You've been quiet," she commented with her mouth full, "Well, quieter than normal. Don't tell me I have to be the upbeat one this year, man." Wow, would you look at that foreshadowing? "Anyways, what electives did you end up signing up for? I think I chose Care of Magical Creatures and Muggle Studies... Muggle Studies should be interesting, y'know? Like, as someone raised as a No-Maj, I wanna see what y'all think of us."
Leo mewled loudly, as if in agreement, before pouncing onto Scott's lap and attempting to take a bite of the chocolate. "Oh Jesus, Leo, stop it!" Ami exclaimed, and Leo glared at her before settling in Scott's lap, convinced that the Gryffindor's legs would be his temporary bed- at least, for the time being. "This cat, I swear," she muttered, rolling her eyes. "Thinks the world is his clam, or whatever the saying's supposed to be. Absolutely crazy! Seriously, don't be afraid to move him if he gets too comfortable."
Studying her friend lounging across from her, Ami mouth twisted as she thought about who knows what. "We've really gotta go out with a bang, Scotty. We're 13, now! Did you know, in America, 13-year-olds go on dates and get pregnant? Now, I'm hoping for the former and not the latter, personally, because kissing is kind of gross, and everyone knows that kissing leads to babies... and honestly, babies are a little gross, too. Thank god I missed Scout's whole newborn phase, I might've vomited if I'd been there for it. Do you think anyone would want to date us?"
Pausing for a moment, Ami corrected herself shortly after. "Me. No one gets to date you, I won't allow it. If they try to, I'll fight them." Seriously, who thought of this stuff? Two foreshadowing warnings in one post? Crazy! "Nothing against you personally, but I've got to test it out, first. I'll be the test subject- if it sucks, I'll be sure to tell you. My dad says girls can be vicious creatures, especially if they start crying... so I'll go first. Just to be on the safe side."

He's My Brother
Retracting the chocolate piece he'd offered her, and sticking it in his own mouth, Scott uttered a quiet "Sorry, forgot..." with his mouth full. Not that he had, really. But he was feeling distracted still, something that, and he couldn't help but let this upset him, she seemed to pick up on fairly quickly."Vegan, remember? But thank you."
Her words were light-hearted, but he didn't like it. He didn't like that she could notice there was anything off about him whatsoever... Scott had always had worries, and little sad thoughts in his head- but they'd never shown on his face, or altered his behaviour in any significant way- he'd never let it. He'd never been "quieter than normal" before."You've been quiet. Well, quieter than normal. Don't tell me I have to be the upbeat one this year, man."
Not ever.
When he was little and got upset, Scott had been the type to keep babbling for hours in order to make sure that absolutely everybody around him could understand perfectly well how he was feeling. But now, he couldn't even explain it to himself. So what was the point of trying to figure out where to start? Besides, why should Ami have to be the upbeat one? It wasn't her job. He'd taken it upon himself in the past, and it had never been too difficult for him. That's just the way things were supposed to be.
"Don't worry about that." Was all he whispered, because she continued talking as Leo jumped onto the seat next to him, suspiciously eyeing the chocolate bar Scott conveniently switched hands for. "Just tired."
Still looking at her cat, and petting his own with his free hand, Scott listened to Ami talking about the academic year to come. Scott knew she'd studied during the summer, and had a feeling that this year she just might take the subjects as seriously as he did. Not that he cared either way, there wasn't a mark in the world that could convince him of anything other than his friend's brilliance. A unique kind of brilliance, maybe. But brilliance all the same.
"Well. Mother always liked runes, but whenever she mentions that Dad bangs his forehead against the nearest surface. He failed that subject, I think... He's like me, not good with reading of any kind. Silas took Muggle Studies, though. For the same reason as you mentioned, I think, too. He's always been friends with muggles."
As far as Scott's memory went, Silas had been friends will all neighbours they'd ever had. And he'd been allowed to be that, too, since he wasn't at all the same risk as Scott or Ben were at the same age. Never any accidents due to emotionally charged magic, no need to even have a parent around to watch him. He'd always had an impressive control that Scott, and he was willing to bet his other brother, too, had always envied.
Realising how his mind was slipping again, Scott cleared his throat to bring himself back, and tried to find the volume that sounded most like his usual voice.
"Ben took Divination. Hates every second of it, keeps saying so at least, but ever since he let slip about the subject to our grandmother he hasn't been able to bring himself to drop it. She asks him to read her palm every Easter... makes stuff up of course. She's probably expecting me to give it a go as well. For a Roman Catholic, she's quite a fan of the occult."
At this, Scott felt the light and long expected thud of a cat landing in his lap. Leo had finally leaped for the chocolate bar, and Scott wasn't a second too early when he pulled his hand far away.
"Oyster." Scott corrected quietly, as he placed the chocolate bar back in his pocket and out of the animal's sight."Oh Jesus, Leo, stop it! This cat, I swear, thinks the world is his clam. Or whatever the saying's supposed to be.""Don't worry about that." He said, as he began petting Leo, too. One continuous and meditative stroke- over both his and Lady's backs... This, he figured, might just do the trick. Might just calm him down, and remind him where he was: in a compartment on the Hogwarts Express, on his way to one of his favourite places in the world, with his best friend to keep him company."Absolutely crazy! Seriously, don't be afraid to move him if he gets too comfortable."
At that moment, Scott didn't feel so odd or uncomfortable at all.
Can't have this now, can we?Scott suddenly choked on whatever little piece of chocolate he still had in his mouth, and began coughing uncontrollably in panic. Lady Madeleine seemed very annoyed with this, but her comfort was, perhaps for the first time in his life, not one of Scott's main concerns. Not even close. His concerns had just started spinning around the room."-Did you know, in America, 13-year-olds go on dates and get pregnant?"
What was she talking about now? Surely not what he thought she was talking about. They didn't talk about that. Or think.
As soon as he finished coughing, Scott's wide, green eyes blinked. Then they blinked again. Then his cheeks turned a bright shade of pink and he decided abruptly that, once again, petting their cats was the priority that should be occupying most of his valuable attention. After all, what could be more important? As far as his ears were concerned, Ami had stopped talking at that question. Forever. And besides, the two creatures in his lap were just so wonderfully soft and pretty..."Now, I'm hoping for the former and not the latter, personally, because kissing is kind of gross, and everyone knows that kissing leads to babies... and honestly, babies are a little gross, too. Thank god I missed Scout's whole newborn phase, I might've vomited if I'd been there for it. Do you think anyone would want to date us?"
Psst..... you know what else is soft and pretty? A GIRL!
Coughing nervously again, Scott stopped petting the cats and braided his fingers together in a way he never did naturally.
"Right. Yes. Good idea. Good plan. Great. No, wait-""...so I'll go first. Just to be on the safe side."
Scott made a slight groan at his own awkwardness, and turned his head to look out the window. The mid-day sun was still lighting up the cloud-filled sky, but he could see his reflection clearly anyway- as rows of trees outside was darkening the view.
Begrudgingly, he realised seen that exact face before in the reflection of the antechamber mirror in their apartment. It had been about one year prior to this. No, exactly one year... They'd all been getting ready in the hall, with his mother rushing up and down the stairs to make sure everything was properly packed for his end Ben's journey (just as she had earlier this day) and the two had been left alone by the door.
That's when Ben had, without missing a beat of Gretchen disappearing out of earshot, remarked that Scott was finally about to return to his girlfriend. And so, from over his shoulder, the twelve-year-old had been made painfully aware of just how imperial red his face could turn.
He wasn't so sure he'd ever be senseless enough to let Ami know that's what Ben called her. She already didn't like him.
"I don't believe you're vicious creatures..." Was what he said instead, relenting to her topic and lowering his voice. He slowly started petting their cats again, glad that he hadn't scared them off with his sudden distress. Then again, what did he know? He didn't have any sisters. The girls he knew best were his cousins, and except for Mia (though not always except for her), Ami would maybe have been right to call them that. He wouldn't himself, of course. He wouldn't ever. But he'd spent enough Christmases in his life with both Maye and Maya Mia's back at it again with the ridiculous name combinations to know how well they could use tears for their advantage, just the way Ami was describing.
But he wasn't an idiot. Most girls weren't Alexanders, and most boys weren't either.
Thank God for that...
Scott smiled, even though he was still pink, and met her eyes again. There was something about the way she was talking to him, even though the topic was questionable, that still managed to pick him up.
"But if you're really that worried, I suppose theres nothing I can do to stop you. Protect away. Actually, I know someone who'd probably be very pleased with that arrangement." He chuckled, and assumed she'd know it was Gretchen he was referring to. "She'd probably pay you, even, if you offered. Ben would be upset though... He's got an arsenal of jokes in store that he won't be able to use with you keeping them away from me."
He was avoiding the word girls like it was hellfire, because it was, but as Scott was slowly returning to the good mood he'd gotten a taste of before anyway, he started narrowing his eyes and study his friend jokingly.
"I'm older." He said, matter-of-factly.
"And a Gryffindor. Shouldn't I be protecting you? From kissing and gross babies, I mean, which by the way doesn't exist... Are perhaps boys not vicious creatures, in your book? Because if I'm your only reference for that then I feel obligated to tell you I'm not a very good one."

He's My Brother
Ugh, Ben. Ami's nose crinkled at the mention of him, although she bit her cheek as she was tempted to badmouth him. This really wasn't the time nor the place for that type of trash-talking, and she really didn't relish on starting out the year on a sour note. After all, the last time she'd spoken ill of Ben, Scott had been furious. She didn't really understand why Scott didn't stand up for himself against his idiot older brother, but she figured that not everyone was as confrontational as she was."Well. Mother always liked runes, but whenever she mentions that Dad bangs his forehead against the nearest surface... Silas took Muggle Studies, though... Ben took Divination."
Little did she know, that would be the understatement of the century.
Fights had always been her strong suit, of course- at least, the physical kind. Using her fists instead of her words was her forte, although Ami couldn't help but wonder just why she was so bad at arguments. You'd assume that she could at least stand her ground in an argument, but anytime someone raised their voice at her in genuine anger, she was a useless puddle of seeping rage. As much as she ran her mouth on a normal day, she was completely useless when it came to a verbal conflict.
For a brief moment, Ami was tempted to laugh as Scott struggled to regain his composure after she had suddenly brought up girls. She wasn't quite sure if Scott had caught on yet, although knowing him, he definitely hadn't- specifically, if he'd caught on to the fact that they were only talking about girls and not boys. It was probably at the drag show they'd went to over the summer that Ami fully realized that she really didn't like boys. Like, at all."Right. Yes. Good idea. Good plan. Great. No, wait- I don't believe you're vicious creatures..."
She knew that her mother was probably expecting her to be like her father when it came to relationships: with a new person every other week as she reached the same age as high schoolers in the US. However, Abella would be more right than she'd bargained for. Well, Ami didn't quite know if she'd be dating someone new each week, but she knew that she and her father would have at least one very important thing in common: they both liked women.
Well, in her case, girls. But same thing.
Ah, yes... parents. There were two types when it came to dating, and Ami had one of each. Brand A, which was the category Abella and Gretchen fell into, hated the idea of the precious little kids falling in love with other people. There was probably a little bit of merit in their argument, what with wanting to protect them from potential heartbreak, but Ami couldn't help but feel like kids still knew what love was. If anything, kids felt emotions deeper than adults, since they didn't go through as many traumatic experiences that stopped them from feeling... or something like that."Protect away. Actually, I know someone who'd probably be very pleased with that arrangement."
Brand B, however, was like her dad. She didn't know Scott's father as well, but she could only assume that he fell into this category, as well. While Lucas certainly didn't relish the idea of his daughter's heart being broken over and over again, he had decided that if Abella was going to be strict, he wouldn't. In fact, he sort of encouraged Ami to have a dating life, although like Ben, he thought that she and Scott were... an item. They obviously weren't, though, which had Ami a little bit confused. Like, come on! They'd gone to a drag show in Chicago! How much gayer could they get?
Well, specifically Ami. She wasn't quite sure if Scott liked boys or not, mostly because he was just so freaking nice to everyone. It was like he actually cared about other people, or something. She hoped that he was, at the very least, bi. Surely, he had to be- he'd let her dress him up in drag, after all. Well, very self-confident straight guys could do that, too... but Ami just got the feeling that there was something more to Scott.
Pfft... Ami couldn't help but laugh out loud at that. Scott? Protecting her? It wasn't that she thought Scott was weak, of course not. It was more that she didn't need protecting... and tended to protect Scott for who knows what reason. Like he said, he was a Gryffindor! Gryffindors usually didn't need protection. They were brave and chivalrous, true lions."I'm older. And a Gryffindor. Shouldn't I be protecting you? From kissing and gross babies, I mean, which by the way doesn't exist...
Ah, who was she kidding? Scott may have been brave in his own way, but he certainly wasn't your average superhero. But chivalrous? He had that in the bag. Where Ami was loud and explosive, Scott got along with everyone- a skill that she couldn't help but envy. And even if he was thirteen days older than her, that didn't mean he had to protect her. Not at all.
Did he really not get it, or was he just playing dumb? Ami couldn't tell. Whatever, it would be a problem for another day for her to deal with. Shrugging in response to his question, she took another bite of her apple, chewing thoughtfully before swallowing. "You're definitely not my only reference," she admitted with a tilt of her head, "Although I think it goes without saying that you're my favorite.""Are perhaps boys not vicious creatures, in your book? Because if I'm your only reference for that then I feel obligated to tell you I'm not a very good one."
Tapping her chin, she added, "Can't understand how you're related to Ben, to be honest. You're so different... but still two halves of the same pickle, I guess." ... Ami, that's not the saying! Even you know that- you're just doing it on purpose, aren't you? "Has he been behaving himself? If he's being an ass again, you have to tell me. I mean, I'm sure you can take care of it yourself, and he probably doesn't mean it or anything," she added hastily, semi-worried that Scott would start lecturing her about respect, and all that nonsense. "But seriously, give me the word and I'll break that stupid nose of his. What a great first impression that would be."
She had to admit, though, what was with the boys in their year? She supposed Quinn was alright... to be fair, most redheads were alright. Even her aggression towards Eris was fading, a feeling that she was still a little unfamiliar with. But boys... even if she hadn't been gay before, Ami feared that she would've had no choice but to start loving women. Not that the boys in their year were totally awful, or anything! ... they simply weren't all that appealing.
"Anyways, boys aren't vicious at all," Ami concluded definitively with a shrug. "Girls are absolutely ruthless, you know. They'll do just about anything to get their way if they want it badly enough. But boys... well, they've got the backbones of chocolate eclairs. If you smile nicely at them, I guarantee you, 95% of them will faint." Pausing, she glanced at Scott and smiled sheepishly. "Uh... no offense, or anything. I think you're in the minority, though. Most of the time."

He's My Brother
No matter how embarrassed he was, there was no not smiling at that. She was strange, his friend, and very different from himself- but she never ceased to be a good one, or let him forget that he was a good one too. She reminded him of Silas in that sense. Compliments felt more sincere coming from them. Like they meant more."You're definitely not my only reference. Although I think it goes without saying that you're my favorite."
As did things like that."Can't understand how you're related to Ben, to be honest. You're so different... but still, two halves of the same pickle, I guess."
Scott's heart sunk a little, realising how she must've thought of his brother ever since she noticed how differently he was behaving. The speed with which she could make that connection worried him, since it meant he should probably try and make it as well. But he didn't want to.
There was something in what she said, as well. He'd always thought so too, that they were as different as can be (as had Ben), but what had always stuck with him was the way his mother would insist on disagreeing. Every time he'd come to her after a fight with his brother (because it was always the two of them), she would reveal to him how alike she actually thought they were.
Ben and Scott were both, unlike Silas (who must really have gotten everything from his mother, since he was so unlike all of them in every respect) and Gretchen, clearly driven by their emotions. Nothing else came close.
It was this notion of his mother's that Scott resorted to now, more frequently with every day that passed, in order to cling on to that connection.
The smile that had occupied him since she'd joked about him being her favourite reference, and that had faded slightly but hung about like a ghost after her comparison, vanished."Has he been behaving himself? If he's being an ass again, you have to tell me.
Was it horrible to say he regretted ever telling her?
Scott couldn't imagine anyone he'd sooner trust, or rather turn to in times of emotional turmoil than the girl sitting in front of him at this very moment (after all, he knew he'd be there for her), and yet he couldn't help but remember the disappointment he'd felt at her last reaction.
She was being a good friend, he supposed and realised. She was protective by nature, too. But there was nothing in the world that Scott liked less than anger. It was the angry parts of his brother that broke his heart, the angry parts of himself that scared him, and the angry parts of his friend that made his eyes freeze in a hollow sort of gaze.
"I'll keep that in mind...""I mean, I'm sure you can take care of it yourself, and he probably doesn't mean it or anything... But seriously, give me the word and I'll break that stupid nose of his. What a great first impression that would be."
She hadn't been able to pretend she was giving his brother the benefit of the doubt for very long. Scott felt like he was being unfair to her, on some level. Like he was supposed to laugh and see that she was only being a protective friend, but instead he as if glued the palms of his arms as he crossed them at the thought of it all.
What if that was something she would actually do? He knew his friend, it was a possibility. He just couldn't understand how she could think that he, since he needed to assume that she knew him at least half as well as he felt he knew her, would be soothed by such a promise of violence... Violence against someone he loved. And violence by someone he loved, as well.
It annoyed him. Well, it did more than that. It tortured him to think of how she must be seeing him. How she must be seeing the both of them. Dumb and in need of protection, arrogant and horribly malicious... It as if forced him to mirror the defensiveness she was displaying herself.
"We have the same stupid nose, by the way."
That was a lie, but he was trying to get his reaction across without telling her any more. He couldn't very well trust that her potential advice would be very helpful to him if he did, should it follow along the same lines. Would she be at all surprised, anyway, by his tone? She knew that family was the most important thing to him. She knew it very well.
Perhaps even it was this knowledge that had her changing the subject back again.
Scott smiled weakly and shook his head. "It's okay... You're probably right, anyway. You know more about this than I do.""Anyways, boys aren't vicious at all. Girls are absolutely ruthless, you know. They'll do just about anything to get their way if they want it badly enough. But boys... well, they've got the backbones of chocolate eclairs. If you smile nicely at them, I guarantee you, 95% of them will faint. Uh... no offence, or anything. I think you're in the minority, though. Most of the time."
Scott thought for a moment moment about Silas' girlfriends, but couldn't imagine his brother fainting because of any of them.
Then, when it came to Ben, he chuckled to himself as he realised he damn near could.
"I wouldn't faint, I don't think... Then again, to quote him," Scott didn't even bother explaining who he meant. "-I have as good an attention to girls as I do my own business."
Embarrassed again, albeit less light-heartedly so than before, Scott shuffled in his seat.

He's My Brother
Ami's smile faded from her face, and her smirk morphed into something halfway between a scowl and a frown. He had to be kidding, right? Despite all the pain and suffering and internal turmoil that Ben had inflicted unto Scott, he still wanted to stand up for that miserable little S.O.B.? She understood loyalty; in fact, it was, like, her most prominent feature, but the loyalty Scott had for his brother was borderline insane. Why couldn't Scott see that their relationship wasn't... healthy? Ami was the last person on earth who'd know what a healthy relationship looked like, but in her extremely unprofessional opinion, Ben was just an asshole, through and through. She just didn't get why Scott couldn't see that."We have the same stupid nose, by the way."
Yes, she knew that Scott's family mattered to him, and they were his number one priority, but surely that didn't mean tolerating Ben's absolutely disgusting attitude and behavior. Ami loved her parents, but if either of them tried to do the same things, she wouldn't hesitate to call them out on it. The Hufflepuff simply didn't hold the same values as her best friend. And although her resolution to put that churning brain of hers to work this year was admirable, learning that not everything was about her, and not everyone held the same values as her, was a lesson that she'd have to learn outside the classroom. However well-intentioned she may have been, there were just some things that didn't translate well. Maybe... what was it that her mom liked to say, all the time?
Maybe love really was blind.
Biting the corner of her lip uncomfortably, Ami turned her head to glance out the window as she tried to restrain herself from diving into a total rant about how important respect and communication was in families. It wasn't her place to comment on that, she's wasn't a therapist. But from Scott's dangerous tone, she knew she shouldn't push the topic further, unless she wanted a slap across the face. She didn't want their Totally Awesomely Epicly Fantastic third year at Hogwarts to start off on a sour note. Finally doing something smart, Ami held her tongue and waited for her rage to pass before meeting Scott's gaze again.
"Of course, I do. I was born for this.""It's okay... You're probably right, anyway. You know more about this than I do."
She did know more than him, didn't she? Ami was never supposed to be the smart one of the two of them. Scott was always the one who had to tell her what things meant, or what normal people would do in whatever precarious situation she'd gotten herself stuck in. Sure, she was an extrovert, but that didn't mean she was a smart extrovert. Scott always knew which spoon to use to drink (eat?) soup, or how deep to curtsy to the professors. But something... something changed. She couldn't quite put her finger on just what had changed, exactly, but something had changed, and there was no going back now. The dynamic of their friendship had changed, and Ami didn't like it. Not one bit.
"Girls are pretty," she remarked quietly, shifting in her seat to glance out the window again, before glancing back at Scott.
Pretty girls... her thoughts drifted, once again, to a certain blonde Slytherin who seemed to be occupying her thoughts more and more, these days. She didn't like this feeling, not one bit. She knew, even without looking in a mirror, that the way she looked at Alexx looked just like the way her father looked at her mother. She had never regarded liking girls to be a bad thing, but there was still an uneasy feeling in her chest anytime she tried to say the words out loud. Maybe it was because she had genuinely thought she only liked boys a few years ago, or maybe because something about Alexx rendered her completely speechless, but whatever it was... she didn't know if she liked this new feeling in the pit of her stomach.
The redhead smirked slightly in response, and laughed lightly. "If you say so... but you're gonna stay away from girls until I make sure they're not the total heart-breakers my dad swears they are. I don't know what he's talking about, you know? I think my mom would slap him if he started complaining about women... but that's my mom for you. Just... stay away from them. You don't get to date girls yet." Ugh, she sounded like such a parent, but she was confident that Scott would understand where she was coming from. After all, all she ever wanted to do was to protect Scott. There wasn't a single thing in the world Ami wouldn't do for her best friend... except maybe swallow her pride."I wouldn't faint, I don't think... Then again, to quote him- I have as good an attention to girls as I do my own business."
Really, how did she end up in Hufflepuff with her self-inflated ego?
But even someone as thick-skinned as Ami could feel the tension and pressure in the air pushing in around them. "It's stuffy in here," she remarked off-handedly, although she got up to crack open the window of their compartment. The sinking feeling she had in the pit of her stomach was starting to fade, but there was still something... something off about this whole thing. "Let me know if it gets too cold, though." What was she, his mother? No. Absolutely not. She needed to snap out of this, and fast.
Maybe it was the absence of food. Or games. Maybe both. Ami continued to munch on her apple as Leo roamed around the compartment, clearly eager to reach Hogwarts, where he had free roam across the expansive grounds. Reaching into her bag, Ami grabbed her deck of Exploding Snap cards, before shuffling and dealing the cards out. Their conversation resumed with their usual banter, although it went without saying that both third years were rather preoccupied with their thoughts. The winds were shifting, and a storm was coming, and unfortunately, both Scott and Ami were woefully unprepared for the future they were so afraid of.
thread finished.
