Passing The Time
Backdated: 1 September 2025
Since receiving her acceptance letter to Hogwarts, Concetta has been unable to sleep with how much she was thinking about the entire ordeal. For days, she would go over the day's routine in her head: Waking early enough to not have to rush, washing up and getting herself together, double checking she had all her things, and saying bye to her pet cat. That was only the things to do before leaving, because getting to Hogwarts was an entire process. Sure, the conductor took care of the train while you just sat there, but there was showing your ticket, boarding the train, finding a seat, and finding something to do until the train got to the Hogsmeade station in the evening. It didn't help that her brothers had been telling tales all week about how sometimes the train would derail, or you'd have to fight a dragon this time of year if it started chasing the train cars, or that there were evil monsters that switch out students' real train tickets with false ones in their sleep so they wouldn't be allowed on the train. Sure, she was probably overthinking the whole situation, but it was the start of something completely novel and different, and she didn't want to muck it up.
Concetta, her parents, and her brothers Casper and Cyrus in grades 7 and 5 respectively, got to the station early. Being early can account for life's surprises, is what her father always said, and so, she had nothing but time to kill before boarding. She counted the hats, tried to find colors in rainbow order, and attempted to pick out who seemed to be new students like herself. They were easy to pick out, since their parents seemed to fuss over them and their demeanor was either excited or scared. A few kids seemed to be in tears at the prospect of leaving home... Odd, since most wizards had been waiting for this for their whole lives. "What a baby", she thought, picking out more people in the crowd to people-watch.
The deep thinking seemed to make time whiz by, because they were now letting people board the train. A chorus of kisses and hugs erupted from the people, and even the last minute, "do you have your wand? Your cauldron? Your robes?" script from concerned parents. Each of the Poisonwood siblings were given a nice wet kiss on the face by their mother, and a pat on the shoulder to see them off. Suddenly, she felt like karma did exist, and it was punishing her for being so judgmental to the kids who were crying. As she was in line to show her ticket, her stomach dropped, and she was nervous. Her mouth went dry as she craned her neck to see her parents. Maybe it wasn't too late to say never mind and go home with them.
Once on the train, they were met with the carpeted interior, and tons of open sliding wooden doors that led into sectioned off compartments, each containing two red booth style seats on either side that could easily accommodate around 6 people with a small table by the curtained window. There were almost too many options for seating! Cyrus was already finding his friends in the compartment they claim to always sit in whenever they rode the Hogwarts Express. In her nervousness, Concetta looked up at her brother Casper, and as expected, he crossed his arms at her.
"You're not sitting with me, so don't even think about it! My mates don't wanna sit with a... baby." He rolls his eyes and gave her a condescending pat on the back before walking off. Now, in the middle of the aisle alone, Concetta felt like she was majorly in the way. After stepping aside opposite of the doors, she had to make a quick decision: Either sit alone and let a stranger sit beside her, or pick a stranger to sit beside. The latter seemed like a better option, since at least you have a choice. After subtly peaking her head past a few compartments, she found one containing a boy that looked friendly enough to not turn her away, so she approached.
She adjusted her lime green tee shirt and took her hand out of the pocket of her jean shorts to seem a little friendlier, or at least unassuming. With a courtesy knock to the wall, she cleared her throat.
"Excuse me. Are you expecting anyone?... And may I sit with you?" She nervously grins, showing off her gapped teeth as she grips her suitcase in front of herself to not knock into anyone still coming down the aisle. There was still a red mark of lipstick on her cheek that stubbornly wouldn't be wiped away by a hand to the face.

✧ The weeks before the start of summer had been near endless. In between the shopping and his parents bestowing hard earned wisdom, Max felt the world was at a complete standstill. He had tried to read up a bit to be better prepared, but the stack of books were more often used as a pillow for daydreaming, and his wand made an excellent drumstick. But still, with all he wanted to do before he left, the days eventually passed.
The morning of the first of September was an early start. Saying his goodbyes to his sister Drew and his mother was hard. They could all have gone to the platform of course, had it not been for the fact that Drew, despite being a squib, was dead set on going too. So Max were to make the journey with his father. A few tears and endless promises of daily letters later, Max left them behind for the term.
Max's father apparated them to a hidden side street not terrible far from Kings Cross station. Waiting just long enough to make sure his father would handle his trunk, Max set off. It was so exciting! New impressions, new faces and most important of all the opportunity to get to know his peers. Despite Max being in a eager hurry his father stayed close. Staring at the wall between platforms nine and ten Max tensed for a moment. He liked new experiences, that were true. But running straight at a wall couldn’t possibly be the smart choice. A moment later he felt his father placing a calming hand on his shoulder «Come on Maxie, it’s nothing to worry about. I have run through here countless times and not even once has anything happened that wasn’t supposed to» Max nodded automatically, but he took another moment before he let his father lead him through. It was a strange feeling, being enclosed in stone that moved around you like that. At least that is how he believed the barrier worked.
Out on the other side Max stopped once again, this time in awe. He had never ridden a train, barely even seen one as far as he could remember. Platform 9 3/4 was good. Open and… well it was a platform. But the train… it was big, with the school crest in the front. A peak in one of the windows showed comfortable seats and plenty of space for luggage. Done taking in the first impression he turned to his father. «Do I go on the train right away? Where am I supposed to show my ticket? Do they always sell treats onboard?» A never ending stream of questions was let loose. Looking up and down the platform it was an easy estimate that they were early, just a few families were already there. His father laughed. «You have to wait a bit to board. You show your ticket when you do, and yes, they always sell treats. But remember that your mother packed you lunch. Remember, she even packed extra so that you could share» His father answered patently before looking at his pocket watch. You’ll be able to board in an hour or so I would think. But I have to get back to the camp. We are moving campground today, as you know, and there is a lot to be done.» Max’s face fell into a rather disappointed frown. He knew he would have to wait a bit by himself, but that aspect now seemed more looming and scary. Thinking a bit and choosing his words carefully he pulled his father into a hug. «Well, alright… give mum a hug from me, and tell Drew that I’ll write to her already tonight.» They let go and Max matched his fathers wide grin. «Be a good boy, and remember everything we have told you about what to expect.» Max nodded dutifully, although most of his parents advice went in one ear and right out the other. «Alright, I will» He took a breath before adding jokingly «And watch out, because by the time summer comes I will finally beat you in wrestling!» Both laughed and his father ruffled Max’s hair.
A moment later Max found himself alone. Looking around he easily found himself in a daydream that passed the time. When he became aware of his surroundings once more, the first people were already boarding the train. Jumping to his feet and dragging his trunk after him, he showed his ticket at the door and thankfully got a helping hand wrestling his belongings into a compartment. Breathless he sat down next to the window. Watching as the platform filled with people and hearing the noice of families saying goodbye, kids running around and unsatisfied pets. He had not been sitting like that for long when the door to his compartment opened and a girl around his own age poked her head in.Meeting her request with a wide grin and a gesture to welcome her he stood up. «Please settle down, I’m not expecting anyone.» He took a peak behind her in case she had a trunk she needed help with, but when no such thing was spottet he sat down again. I’m Max, and this will be my first year.» Getting through the self presentation his parents had convinced him to practice, he felt a bit bolder and added «And I’m hoping to be sorted into Hufflepuff! ….What about you? He almost forgot he was supposed to ask about her too, so the question was a bit delayed. But he fully believed that a smile and a positive attitude could make up for almost anything.✰

Passing The Time
At him accepting her request, she grins, real and genuine unlike the one of nervousness that was previously stuck on for politeness. She had with her just a handheld suitcase of adult size, adorned in a few stickers and a green tag that had her name spelled out in cursive lettering too lavish for a child to have done it. Stepping into the compartment, she lifted the suitcase onto the seat opposite of his. After looking up at how far she would have to lift it to put it on the overhead shelf, she resigned to keep it next to her. It was fine there long as no one needed to sit, so she pushed it aside and took a seat, a little winded from lifting it.
"Sorry, I just... figured most you'd be with a group like most people," she bashfully grins, tilting her head as she looks him over. Her ink-like black hair had no resistance as it moved with her head, falling over her face before she turned her head upright again. It wasn't a scrutinizing gaze, just curious. "Max..." she repeats to get the name familiar. It would save the awkwardness of forgetting it when she went to call on him one day. "I'm Concetta... It's my first year too. I thought you were for sure in your second or third! I feel way better now". She leans back in relief, looking out the window as the conductor does last calls. The clock outside the station read 10:59, so any second now, they would depart.
Her face slightly scrunches hearing he wanted to be sorted into Hufflepuff. "Who wanted to be sorted there", she thought before deciding to not voice that opinion, since if you have nothing nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all. She wreaked her mind for anything to say that wasn't, "that's my worst nightmare" or "are you sure"!
"That's unique!" She settled on. "Does your family have a history of Hufflepuff or something? Everyone in my family has been sorted in Slytherin, mum and dad, my brothers... I will be too! I'll stand for nothing less!" Under the determination was a hint of self-skepticism. She knew deep down she didn't have what it took to be a Slytherin, but the Hat would have to see how determined she is and consider it a bit. During their conversation, she kicked her feet that didn't clear anywhere near the floor, the back of her purple flats hitting the seats with a thud rhythmically.
Realizing how her last statement left off, she added, "I hope you get what you want, at least!" She pulled her hair over her shoulder to tilt her head again. The asymmetry helped her see, or at least made it easier to maintain eye contact with him in order to be polite.

✰ Max regretted not helping her with her luggage, however small, as soon as he sat down. The guilt only grew when she did not even attempt to put it up on the luggage shelf. In the hopes of not embarrassing her, or himself for that matter, any further he decided to keep silent on the topic for the time being. «Yeah, it does seem like most people are with a group, or at least waiting for one» He agreed with a nod before adding with a stupid grin «But I like meeting new people, and in the worst case scenario I only have to put up with my own company»
He nods in confirmation as she repeats his name. Max should be easy enough. If only his own memory would agree. He decides to parrot as she did when her name is spoken. «Concetta…» His voice is barely audible as he gladly allows her to talk over him. He would have to come up with some kind of rhyme or something to remember that. He grins widely at hearing they are peers. Great! Not even at school yet, and already he knows one person in his year. His eyes do widen at her estimate of his age. «Really? I don’t think I’m that tall!» After a moment though, he laughs «Not that I would mind being perceived as so, or even come as far as my second or third year, but I would much rather be here with you as classmates» He agrees as a moment of silence descends upon them.
Concetta seemed to be deciding what to say, and just as the train slid off from the platform, she seemed to make a decision. Max nodded with the biggest smile. «Hufflepuff is great! My mother was sorted there, and she has told me all about it! The values, the common room, the friendships within the house…» After that mouthful he gulps down a lungful of air before he picks up a bit more hesitantly «I don’t know all that much about Slytherin to be honest. Just that Mum apparently really wanted to be sorted there» He seems to consider adding something but he shakes his head instead. Complicated family history may be a bit much to share so soon. He is silent for a moment before he once again puts on a smile. I’m sure the house is great though, and I hope it is everything you want it to be! I will be more than happy next to the kitchen and endless snacks, or so Mum has said» He adds the last jokingly before peeking up at his impossibly heavy trunk. «Speaking of snacks, I have brought some and would be happy to share when we get a little peckish!»✰

Passing The Time
As he spoke, Concetta kept a polite eye contact while still admiring the changing scenery as the train slowly disembarked, picking up speed and leaving London behind as they started on their long journey. The crowds and architecture of King's Cross station got smaller and smaller as the train rushed away from it on its predetermined path.
At his admission that he didn't see himself as very tall, she reevaluated with a look over him to fully consider before shaking her head. "Maybe not tall... I dunno what it is. You're friendlier than my friends from school. The older kids were usually the nicer ones..." She trails off, realizing her initial assessment was a little nonsensical. "I mean it in a good way!" She assures, smiling at his declaration before agreeing. "Me too. I'm glad the first person I met's my peer". The silence wasn't uncomfortable, mostly because it wasn't pure silence. You could hear the train's engine in a way that was noticeable while not being annoying, and the muffled speech from other excited students in their compartment managed to leak through into theirs. It was a welcome background noise to accompany the trip.
At his excitement around Hufflepuff and the confirmation that it was a family thing, she nodded. "I've heard no outsiders have been in the Hufflepuff common room in... forever!" Finally, there was something positive to say. That long of a streak was very commendable, and it had to be commented on. "You either love or hate Slytherin, it seems. People say Slytherin are sneaky and cunning, but that can't be, because I'd never be sneaky", she comments contemplatively, still listening to him while taking another glance out of the window. "I didn't know Hufflepuff dorms were right next to the kitchen! You'll be so lucky! Slytherin dorms are right by the potions classroom. My brothers have already taught me quite a lot at potions, so I have no doubt I'll be the best in my class". She shakes her head of her slightly boastful ramble. Boasting had its time and place, usually when you get closer friends with someone.
At his generous offer, her eyebrows raised, surprised at his generosity. "Really? Thank you! My mum packed a few sandwiches, so we can share those too... if you'd like, of course. It'll be like a proper picnic!"

✰ His reaction to her believing he was older because he was nice and friendly, was confusion. If he shouldn’t be so friendly, then how should he act? He couldn’t very well treat her like his sister when they argued and pull on her hair. Concetta might know a few of Drews tricks and that wouldn’t end well for anyone. So he simply shrugged a bit and gave her a crooked grin.
«Exactly! It brings a hint of myth to it, you know? Apparently it’s filled to the brim with cozy so Mum described it as just one big fort of blankets» He leans in a bit closer as he retell the statement, almost as if said in confidence but followed with the biggest grin. He didn’t quite know if he believed it or not himself yet, but as a myth it was certainly entertaining. «I have heard the cunning bit before, but the sneaky bit is new, so you might be right that that part isn’t true» He pondered this for a moment before continuing «What I definitely have heard though is that Slytherins ar real go-getters, always goes after what they want. And that is a real positive thing!» He adds the latter in assurance. «If you won’t fight for your own goals, no one else will either.»
At the mention of potions he sags just a little. «I’ve never been that good with following instructions and recepies, they always tend to end up a bit wonky. But I’m sure you’ll do great!» He assures. «I like plants better, more variety and stuff, so I hope to at least do okay in herbology!»
He sort of blows off her reaction to him offering to share. Anything less than sharing would simply not do. «Fantastic! A picnic it is» The declaration is followed by a bit of laughter. «I even got a bit of pocket money with me to buy something off the trolley. I haven’t decided what yet, so I would appreciate your input» He tells her in earnest.✰

Passing The Time
"Wow, itsa bit like having a slumber party every night, innt?" She chuckles, taking a moment to ponder the image he was painting of the Hufflepuff common room. It seemed somewhere you wouldn't get too homesick, since it was plenty comfortable inside. The Slytherin common room had grandeur, yes, but the way her brothers described it seemed pretty cold, especially being in a dungeon under a lake. "Cellars definitely beat dungeons in terms of being comfortable inside! I s'pose you've got Slytherin beat there."
Most people couldn't stand to conjure any good will for houses they weren't personally aligned with, so for him to be able to easily say good about Slytherin made her smile, and also reconsider how scared she was about meeting new people. If he was anything to go off of, and hopefully so, people at Hogwarts would be nicer than primary school. "You could say that! Ambition is a good quality. I used to do ballet, and the teacher was very strict on giving up, which is why a lot of people didn't stay in the studio very long. Not very many parents want some lady making their kids cry." She shrugs like it wasn't that big of a deal.
"Herbologyyy... is just... identifying plants, right?" She raises an eyebrow, trailing off. Of course, she knew what herbology was, but it was one of those things like engineering. You get the gist, but not exactly what an engineer does all day. "How you feel about potions is how I feel about herbology. We have what I think is rosemary growing outside our house, but I'm not certain enough to eat it." She chuckles, lighting up with an idea. "If we're both already good at something, we can swap class notes, then we can both pass at the very least! I've been practicing my joined up writing all summer, so they'll look quite lovely." Her words carried conviction and confidence around the legibility of her dictation.
"I quite like chocolate frogs since you get a sweet and a collectable card!" She smiles, leaning forward to put her elbows on the table at the prospect of the sentient chocolate frogs, and how they'd hop away from you if you allowed them to. "Speaking of cards, I have a deck of cards too! We could play a game when it gets too boring. My mum and dad won't teach me how to play spades, but I can play everything else, I think."

That was exactly why he wanted to be placed in Hufflepuff. With good help the school part would fly by in a hurry, and they could just… be cozy. Collecting himself from dreamland before it was too late, he scratched thoughtfully on his cheek as she spoke of ballet. «No, I suppose adults wouldn’t want that… but what is the Slytherin common room like? As far as your brothers has told you? I would be interested to know!»
«Oh, herbology is so much more than that!» His eyes practically sparkled. «Sure you identify the plants, but you also care for them. Turn the soil, pruning, adjust conditions for exposure to sunlight… And when the plant is thriving you can harvest from it. Leaves, roots, puss and all sorts of other things!» At this point he visibly stops himself from talking much further by biting his lower lip. She said she wasn’t all that interested in the subject, so he couldn’t very well talk her ear off! «I see what you mean» He started up with a bit of hesitation. «If you place me in front of a cauldron with the easiest potion in the world almost finished, I guarantee you I’ll find some way to mess it up while following the steps given» He shakes his head with a bit of a laugh.
Perfect! «That is a really good point!» They would have a chocolate frog to finish off their picnic. His eyes goes wide at her next statement. «You have cards with you?!?» An impossible wide smile followed. «That’s great! I never get to play at home anymore, since it always starts an argument with my sister. I don’t really know that many games though, so do you mind teaching me?»

Passing The Time
As he asked about the Slytherin common room, she tapped her chin in contemplation and looked up to recall the mental image she'd been painted by her family. She opened her mouth to speak before shutting it, thinking of how to illustrate it when compared to the Hufflepuff one. "Well...", she starts, her voice inflection raising just a little. "They've always said it looks like our dad's office, but that's no help to you. Bit grand, moody... green. Have you ever seen the Palace of Westminster? I think like that, but if some of the lights were out and there were tapestries. Oh, and snake stuff! It's also cold in there, my brothers say. Not as warm as the Hufflepuff one." Once she was satisfied with her depiction of it, she nodded and let the conversation keep rolling.
She nodded as she was enlightened about the different aspects of herbology. Silly, of course you care for the plants as well, someone has to! "Have you had a garden back home? You seem very experienced! I got a splinter in the gummy bits under me nail one time, so I get queasy diggin' 'round in the soil." She laughs off.
At his enthusiasm in her cards, she nodded vigorously and hopped up to her suitcase in the next seat to get it open. As she reaches in, she slips her hand down to the elbow of a suitcase that should only accommodate up to her wrist if the exterior size was anything to go off of. With a few swipes of the arm and a great pull, she retrieved a box of playing cards. They were quickly thrown on the table as the suitcase was folded back over and the latches closed it away safe.
"My mum charms our bags so we don't have to buy new ones", was the explanation as she sat back down, returning her focus to the cards. "I'd be happy to teach you! I love teaching people things. I argue with my brothers a lot, but I like to think I'm a good sport in games. All we do is play competitive games like poker, war, mao. I prefer solitaire, but that's a solo game... Do you have any preferences with like... fast, easy-going, strategy?" As they talk, she knocks the box of cards on the table between them. The corners of the box were beat up and ripped in places that were put back together with tape. It was a well-loved deck of cards.

—— ✰ ——Dialogue: 225700—————|||||——————— ✧ ——Words: 403|||—— ✰────────────────────────He leaned in closer to properly listed to her description of the common room in the dungeon. It all sounded a bit… sad. He hadn’t been to the Palace of Westminister, but a part in the back of his mind whispered that it was a government building of some kind. Those were always grey and boring. But at least it was green! Keeping a tight grip on his expression to not let his skepticism slip he spoke up. «I suppose it sound good… with the grandness and all» Despite his efforts to keep his face neutral, his rather uncertain tone more than revealed his true opinion. Brightening up however, he added with a quick smile «But the green sound good! That’s my favorite color» As he spoke he picked at the front of his knitted jumper, as if to show that he was speaking true. «And the temperature is just a good excuse to get comfy with a cuppa tea!» That was always a good pastime in the colder months.
He burst into a surprised laughter at her comment of splinters. He supposed it wouldn’t really seem that funny to the general public, but he found the thought of someone not being used to splinters almost impossible. Collecting himself however, he at least tried to answer her question. «Not a garden in that sense, no.» He took a breath as he pondered how to put words to it. «We move around a lot, setting up camp in fields, forests and next to rivers and lakes. We find what we need in the environment and try to take care of the area in return. So if we decide to come back one day we will still be able to find everything we need.» Quick pause to confirm that he hadn’t forgotten anything. «Does that make sense?»
The conversation continued, and when Concetta actually brought out her cards his smile grew wide. «I think a fast game! Those were always my favorite» He confides happily. «My sister and I would always get overly competitive, and end up knocking over stuff and breaking it» He cast a glance around the compartment before meeting her gaze with a bit of a smirk. «But that’s not a problem when there aren’t impossibly many knickknacks around. And» Giggling he raised his hand as if to swear. «I promise I will do my very best to be a good sport!»
