A Duel, Perhaps? Unofficial Duel PV

I had woken up later than usual this morning, and had been halfway down to the library, when I remembered about the duel, and had to run all the way back upstairs. Thankfully, I’d had my wand in my bag anyway, however I had needed to dump by bag by the wall when I came in.
Thankfully, I wasn’t late, and managed to get quickly sorted out, and standing on the piste, in what felt like record breaking time.
I hadn’t even seen a duel before, and had barely even talked to my opponent for more than a few minutes, meaning that I was probably at a disadvantage. But, there was nothing I could do about that, so I listed to the moderator introduce herself, before getting out my wand, and, not sure quite what to do, I stood in what my old PE teacher had called “the ready position”. Feet shoulder width apart, and bent slightly at the knees, with my wand (replacing a tennis racquet) held out in front of me.
When Avery said that we could begin at any point, I started nervously wracking my brain for a good spell to start with - a bit hard, as I didn’t really know what spells were best for duelling.

Derek slowly crept down the corridor, trying to find the dueling club. He had woken up at the nick of time today, barely getting dressed before rushing out of the dormitory. Derek gripped at his wand in his satchel, along with some really heavy books.
He remembered asking Avery for some help moderating a duel between him and Mirada, a Ravenclaw in his year. He had no idea what kind of dueler she was, or her spell range, so he was going to have to wing it, which was usual. But, as the Ravenclaws were typically the ‘smart’ house, he was at a big disadvantage.
Derek finally got to the room, and he saw that Avery and Mirada were already there. After some hasty ‘sorry I’m late’s, Derek got into the ready position, planting his feet strong on the ground, in the way he had seen from his cousins.
He studied Mirada, who looked nervous. Probably searching for spells, his brain whispered. Do not be fooled by looks. Derek gripped his willow wand, remembering what Ollivander had said about it. Strong and pliable, and enjoys inventiveness and creativity. Which meant… he had to really wing it. Arghhhh.
But all too soon, the duel started. Derek lunged to one point, expecting Mirada to advance with some tricky spell that required precision. He gripped his wand and held it at the ready. It had started

Avery winced as she watched Derek and Mirada shoot their spells. Derek, the unfortunate one, managed to be tongue-tied by Mirada's spell. "Oof! Tough one there, Jay!" Avery exclaimed as he became tongue-tied as well as his spell missing Mirada. From distraction or bad luck, Avery wasn't sure, but this was just the beginning.

"Alright. Nice work surviving your first round! Prepare for round two!" She commented as she shifted.

She hadn't realized how hard it was to be on the moderating end of the stick. It felt so weird to her not shooting the spells at her opponent, but rather watching them shoot. She made a mental note to herself to try moderating again another time. Maybe it would get easier with time? Or maybe she should just stick to Quidditch and let Dylan do the dueling. It was his thing anyway.

Avery prepared for the next round. Though she was firing spells, that didn't mean she couldn't mentally prepare herself for what was to come. This duel was already becoming interesting even with it being just the first round. She couldn't wait to see what would come of the next round. All she had to do was wait and see.

I was so happy that my spell actually hit. Sure, I did feel sorry for Derek, but I could apologise afterwards. Actually, I probably should speak to him afterwards, because we’d never spoken, except from to arrange the duel. Although, now probably wasn’t the best time to consider chatting to him, considering I’d just muted him.
And, to make things even better after my successful cast, I hadn’t been hit with a spell, diving out of the way at the last moment, leaving me panting, but happily not injured, or whatever that spell was supposed to do. Hopefully, I wouldn't need to suffer the effects of any spells, but from the books I read about duelling, I knew that was pretty much impossible.
I looked over to the side of the room, checking that my bag was still there - not that I thought anyone would steal it, but there might've been a spell cast on it. Thankfully it was just lying there normally.
When Avery said that the second round was starting, I panicked slightly, knowing that I needed to do something good now that Derek couldn’t cast a spell. The problem was that I was generally better at theory than actually casting spells, but I thought I might as well try as hard as I could.

I ran away as quickly as I could, clamping a hand to my mouth. Mirada’s spells had actually hit, and my curse, Slugulus Erecto, had just barely missed her!
I gripped my wand staring daggers at Mirada. I couldn’t do anything other than duck at her next spell, so I started to crouch a little bit. Mimblewimble was so annoying! At least it’ll be over soon.
Mirada was looking over at her bag, so I took my chance and hid in the shadows. Hopefully she’ll miss. She probably will now attack with some dangerous spell now that I’m helpless like a newborn little baby.
I started planning out my next move, after the Mimblewimble has worn off, of course. Maybe I’ll do the same thing to Mirada after! Wouldn’t that be ironic. I smiled slightly to myself, amusing myself with that idea.
But just then, Avery announced the next round will be starting. I started to panic, because I couldn’t cast any spells. Hopefully I won’t get hit again, although, that is pretty unlikely considering all the times I’ve seen my sisters duel, and all the books I’ve read about dueling. They were pretty dangerous. I’ll have to wing it, I guess.

The fire was no joke. Avery watched with her wand at the ready to see whether or not Derek would cast a spell. Being mute, the spell he tried to cast could go horribly wrong leaving all three of them in danger. Luckily, Derek had paid enough attention in his classes to think twice before casting a spell. He swiftly began to dodge around as he awaited Mirada's attack.

Unfortunately for Derek, his attempts at evasion were no match for Mirada's Incendio Duo. Avery watched as the boy was smothered in flames. The spell was strong. Reminding Avery of her own Incendio Duo she had cast upon her opponent in her first ever duel. Derek's robes were in tatters by the end of the firestorm leaving the majority still burning. Ouch.

It took only a moment for the two to recover. With Derek finally regaining his speech, Avery knew this next round would be an unforgettable one. That seemed to be the case with most duels. Though above all else she couldn't wait to see how creative the two could become. She knew they had a lot in them, and all that they had to do was let it show.

It was a little bit awkward that Derek was glaring at me, and that he wasn't able to speak, as one of the main reasons that I'd wanted to do the duel was to meet some new people, and possibly make a new friend. Well, that was unlikely to happen now that I'd set fire to him.
I hadn't expected my spell to be anywhere near as strong - it hadn't when I'd learnt it, and tried it in the lesson.
"I'm so, so sorry." I spoke quietly, hoping that he could still hear me, however I knew that it was probably unlikely that he'd hear me, or, even if he did, he probably wouldn't believe me. That was one of the problems with being ultra-competitive, I refused to go down without a fight.
Without realising, I had already been planning my next spell, and the one after that, and even the one after that. However, I realised that was stupid. During a duel, one thing going wrong could destroy my entire plan, so it was better to just go with the flow.
However, I was a Ravenclaw. It was in my nature to plan, and proceed with it. I decided to come to an agreement with the two sides of my brain - I would plan it out, however if even one thing went wrong... Well, let's just say there would be chaos, explosions, and who knows what else. Just a normal day in the life of a Ravenclaw!
