Private correspondence between Rory Courtenay and quill pall @Chaewon Lee

Letter written on fine muggle paper, unintentionally decorated with some ink stain fingerprints. The handwriting on the front is sharp and angular, yet very legible, clearly spelling out the name of the recipient. The inside is much the same, the blocky letters of an analytical mind.

Hi Chaewon!
We're quill palls it seems! I wanted to send a letter to get to know you a bit and introduce myself as well since we haven't properly met. My name's Rory! I was just sorted into Slytherin house and this is my first year at Hogwarts. I should probably start with some things about me? That's the proper way to introduce yourself I suppose. I grew up in Westminster and have lived in the UK all my life. I'm half Tunisian though, which doesn't seem to be very common, so I can speak Arabic as well as English. (Though my handwriting gets a bit sloppy in Arabic, so I suppose it's a good thing I don't use it as often.) You're probably from somewhere way cooler than Westminster. Growing up so close to the center of everything it seemed, I'm really interested in how people from other places grew up. So where are you from?
I'm really into adventure novels and I think it'd be really cool to get to go on a grand sort of quest at Hogwarts. And if anywhere would be the place for that, it's got to be here, right?And you know, if we get along we could go on one together! (Only if you're the adventuring type of course.)
I like aliens, which are a muggle concept about what's in outer space. I think they're probably some of the coolest things ever. My mum's a muggle, so that's how I know those sorts of things.
So far my favorite class has been potions. The professor seems really cool and I think we're really going to learn a lot this year. So, I'm curious what your favorite class is.

Yes, I totally agree that I'm from a way cooler place than you. I was born in Busan - if you don't know, it's a city in South Korea. Busan is mostly known for its seafood, but I don't like it. Ice cream and chocolate are tastier for me. Please don't say you eat seafood; it is disgusting. But then I moved to Guilford, and I don't like that place.
Are we now talking about adventures? Yes, yes, yes! I grew up not visiting most interesting places, but I read almost all adventure-genre books. Did you hear about the Chamber of Secrets? It seems very exciting! But wait... Do you really think that I'm going to be your friend? No, Lees were never friends to muggles. I'll call you that because muggles and half-bloods feels the same to me.
Do you think that aliens are cool? Oh dear... Do you want me to show you real magic? Have you heard about metamorphmagus? No? Then I'll show how that works. I bet you will not believe your eyes.

Letter written on the same muggle paper, inky fingerprints adorning the envelope. Chaewon's name is spelled out in bold blocky letters across the front, however they're messier than the last time, indicating that perhaps a quill was used (maybe for the first time) instead of a muggle pen. A small doodle of a frog with a smile and a traditional wizards hat sits next to the name.

Hello again Chaewon!
I was glad to receive your letter so quickly! And it's always nice to meet another Slytherin, I'm still trying to meet more people here and I'm glad I got assigned someone in the same house as me to be quill palls with. I'm glad you got the house you wanted, it's impressive that everyone in your family has been a Slytherin. I personally was really hoping for Gryffindor, but I think I'm going to be happy here. As for me being half-blood, I'm not entirely sure. As far as I was aware there weren't any limitations on housing based on blood status, but maybe you've heard more than me? I'm sorry to hear that you think only pure bloods deserve to be here though, some of the best and coolest wizards and witches I've ever met have been half-blood. (Though a fair bit of them were pure blood too, don't worry).
I'd never actually heard of Busan before, but it sounds amazing! And I agree with you, I don't particularly love seafood, and sweets are always a pleasant alternative.
I can't believe we're both into adventure stories! I did hear about the Chamber of Secrets, a lot of the other magical children where I grew up thought it was super cool and I heard about it from them. I think it's amazing that such a thing exists inside Hogwarts. And that means it could be hiding more incredible secrets as well!
I think that if you would ever want to we could be quite good friends. We have so much in common after all. And we could go on a great adventure together once we learn some spells.
I've never heard of metamorphmagus, but I'm always excited to learn something new.

I'm always happy to receive letters. Actually, we are writing letters for each other, but we still have not met. Yet. Maybe it could be the start of our adventure.
Gryffindor? Are you serious? In my opinion (everyone should think like me), Slytherin is the best house.
Ravenclaw - They all are smart, but that means they are not enjoying their life.
Hufflepuff - I don't even know people from there; I think they should be boring.
Gryffindor - Cocky students.
But if you don't like Slytherin, think again.
No, there aren't any limitations. Hopefully, there are going to be in the future. Can you name at least one famous half-blood wizard or witch? I'll wait.

Letter written on crinkled parchment, almost as if it were haphazardly stored in a book-bag before use. Blocky letters spell out the recipients name: Chaewon Lee. A couple stars decorate around the name, adding a little flair. A small doodle of a barn owl follows the name, with the owl holding an envelope in its talons.

Hello again Chaewon!

Sorry it took so long for me to respond this time. Classes are really getting to be a lot of work. I'm almost scared of what it'll be like once we get to our NEWT year. Of course, I'm enjoying all the work, it's all quite interesting. I just wasn't prepared to be doing so much in just the first few weeks of school. I'm sure you're doing great with all your homework, but if you ever want to study together I wouldn't be opposed!
I do really like Slytherin now that I've gotten more used to being in the house. And the common room is so cool! I think it's actually the prettiest place in the whole castle.
And yes, I can name a famous half-blood! Did you know that Harry Potter himself was half-blood? That's the one that people are always surprised about. But if you wanted something different (I'm not sure if he counts, seeing as he was THE Harry Potter) there's always Albus Dumbledore!
My favorite food is shawarma. It's a wrap filled with lamb and lettuce and tzatziki, I think it's absolutely amazing!
Anyways, how has your week been? What's been your favorite class so far?

I'm totally fine with waiting for your letters! Actually, I don't get many of them, so I'm excited to receive a letter from you. I think most of the students likes to do homework, but I hate them. If we already had a boring lesson, why do we also need to do some homework? Did you remember that Charms class when we learnt how to make a skeleton dance? I mean, it's cool, but would we ever need to use this charm? But if you know me well, I will definitely brag - I'm doing great with my homework because I'm pureblood. : ) Okay, we can study together. I'm not very excited, but maybe you could help me learn about potions? Of course, I could do it on my, own but as you wanted to study together... Is transfiguration hard for you? For me, it's the easiest class!

Hi Chaewon!

I like receiving your letters too! It's a bit of a relief, sometimes I worry that I bother people too much. I'm sorry you hate homework, I totally get it though. Back when I was homeschooled I really hated doing homework, but I enjoy it more now that I'm at Hogwarts. I'm not entirely sure why that is though.
The charms class with the skeleton was really cool! I even drew a skeleton on the front of this letter for you. I'm not entirely sure when we would need something like that, but there's got to be some kind of practical use otherwise there wouldn't be a spell for it.
I totally believe that you're good at homework though! You seem like the kind of person who would definitely excel in schoolwork. And I'd be happy to help you with potions, so long as you help me with transfiguration. (I'm joking, I'd be happy to try and help either way).
It'd be so cool if you find an undiscovered place in the castle! And I'd love to help you try and find one.

Dear Rory,

You were homeschooled? I've never heard anything like that. Does that mean that you were doing tasks at home? Muggles are VERY interesting... I didn't need to do homework back then, but I had more things to worry about than homework. Only my twin sister was happy to do tasks.
The skeleton on the letter is funny. I like when someone makes me laugh because to do that, you need to know me well! His legs are a bit too thin, I think. But the rest is okay! Did you learn to draw at home? What was the homework about?
You said that you're good at making potions. But you're a half-blood, so how could you practise? Also, in my previous letter, I mentioned that I would be the best seeker. I was being selfish, and I'm... Please don't tell anyone, but I'm sorry.
Transfiguration is easy for me because I am a metamorphmagus. My family thinks that being like me is a curse. But I keep my mind positive and often don't really meet my family. I try to avoid them when I can. I can't wait to be an adult!

Dear Chaewon,

I'm being fancy today! I started the letter off with the word 'dear' and everything!
Yeah, I was homeschooled until I came to Hogwarts. I could have gone to a muggle primary school but my parents decided I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut about how amazing the wizarding world is. So yes, I did all of my schoolwork at home. I actually really liked it, but I had to learn both muggle history and wizarding history which was a bit confusing for a while.
I don't think you've mentioned your twin before. What's she like? And is she at Hogwarts as well?
I'm glad you liked the skeleton, I'll have to add more doodles to these letters if it makes you happy! And yeah, I like to think I'm pretty good at potions, I didn't get to actually make anything at home but I know a lot about them. My dad works as a potion master so I've learned all sorts of cool things from him. What do your parents do for work?
Being an adult sounds like it will be amazing. You'd be able to go on all sorts of adventures without all the rules.
I wont tell anyone the things you tell me in these letters, don't worry. I really want to be friends with you, which means being nice and respecting things like that. Don't tell anyone, but I really like talking to you.
