Tough Luck
@Charlotte HarringtonOh she hadn't liked that.
At least that's how it would seem if anyone not colorblind simply looked at the way Charry's face lit it a rather unbecoming red that really flatter her at all. She either wasn't used to people talking back or had gotten too cocky with her face value assumptions on him. Maybe a mix of both. Either way all that smug attitude seemed to deflate the more he spoke which typically really showed the colors of a person.
His words were a little cruel but he'd known that before he'd even said them. Cutting her off and twisting the sharp words against her like a knife because he hadn't cared for her answer. Part of him feeling like she'd just toss back some half done defense of an excuse before trying to get the upper hand because that's what people tended to do. He'd very well meant what he said too, despite words layered with teasing because she'd been smug and something about her so haughty.
Like a person towards a stingy cat, knowing they'd get it to come around eventually with treats and bribery. He had not liked that and he'd show no kindness to a person like that. After all she started this.
"Huh-" he drawled, thinking back to the fifth or maybe sixth years he's seen by the lake. Not his favorite place but close enough to his tree spot that he hadn't seen any first or second years anywhere near there...
"-I only saw the higher years over there..." he trailed off, taking in the way her gave broke away, hair tossed over her shoulder as if simple brushing away the topic. Unimportant. Boring. If not broken for the way her fingers curled around the book she'd practically abandoned, nervous. Maybe annoyed? Suited him fine and his mouth twisted into a polite smile, tiny and plastic."Friends with fifth years? Or were they sixth..."
A hand raised up waving away his own question the moment it left his lips, green eyes glittering when she finally looked back to meet his gaze. He could have mistaken it for the other getting herself together like before but any semblance of that smugness from before would be ruined by the fish gaped look she'd had before
"Doesn't matter I guess." because she was a liar.

Tough Luck
Elsian raised his hand, gracefully brushing away his comment before Charlotte could respond. Her eyes were still locked on his, but she was deflated now. Her walls had crumbled and all she had was this shield of a book.
“Doesn’t matter, I guess.” he said, smugly.
And he was right. It hardly mattered if Charlotte's made up friends were by the lake, or the Gryffindor tower, or the deserts of Egypt for that matter. Because they weren’t real. And Elsian knew it.
She couldn’t help but wonder if he, too, had any friends. Clearly he was used to being alone, fending for himself. She could see Elsian was okay with being himself. He trusted himself enough that he exuded true, earned confidence-nothing like the “fake it till you make it” stuff Charlotte lived by. It was a skill Charlotte had never learned, had never needed to, and she found herself needing it more than ever as hot tears rushed to her eyes. She blinked them away, trying not to show any more vulnerabilities than she already had. All her cards were on the table, and she felt the pull to almost be honest with him.
But that meant opening up. And he had been cruel to her-yet she had been cruel to him…
She gently pushed away from the table, standing up steadily. She grabbed her stack of books, knees bending under the weight. Meeting Elsian’s gleaming eyes yet again, she said softly, “I’m sorry. Um, this can be your spot now.”
As she turned to leave, hot tears filled her vision again. A single simple conversation had reduced her to this...blubbering mess. What a pain it would be to further ignore Elsian in the Great Hall or classes, even, after he had seen her so pathetic.
