𝕮oming down to the Hospital Wing after almost being burned alive was not the worst thing Vera had ever had to do, but it was close. She'd fallen into mud puddles and been soaked right to the bone while horse riding before, which smelled bad in a different way. So, really, getting roughed up wasn't new.

The embarrassing part of it all was still having to navigate the moving staircase to the third floor where the Hospital Wing sat. The entire way down, Vera thought, did they not think their floor plan through when they put the Hospital Wing on the third floor? The Duelling Club was on the fourth floor, just above it, and the other sports were out on the fields. All athletes had to make some journey to the place they were supposed to recover from after a match, regardless of how beaten and tired they were. So, the answer was decidedly no.

By the time Vera made it to the Hospital Wing, she was ready to pass out, but still alert. She mentally ran through the list of injuries she acquired from her duel, which was surprisingly... not a lot. Mostly burns from multiple Fire-Making Spells that were from the Gryffindor boy on the other team. Vera couldn't help the expression she made remembering that. It took—how many tries? Two? Three? Before Vera finally dodged it.

Was she hit by anything else? A Knockback Jinx maybe? There had to be more, because if all that hit her was actual fire then that was both impressive and embarrassing. Her allies and opponents got hit with a few Knockback Jinxes, yes, but what about her? Her memory was slipping.

She had to lay down somewhere stat.

Another day, another excitement. It was Zach's healer internship time in the Hospital Wing, something he was really excited about after the hiatus of the program. Not to mention, the one who brought this up was one of his favourite professors, Professor McLoughlin. Or for now, he called her Nurse McLoughlin.

That day was also the second day of the Duelling Championship, which means the time when Hospital Wing got many student patients, a perfect time for the interns to get much hands-on experience to hone their skills in healing magic. Zach sat near the nurse station when the door opened.

It was a girl appearing behind the door, someone who tickled Zach's brain. "Ah, that girl," Zach muttered. He grabbed his notes and approached the girl. "You didn't seem okay," he paused to make another quick assessment of the girl, "But still have the energy to come here on your own. Follow me."

The intern led the girl to the nearby empty bed. "Make yourself comfortable," he said to please the girl to have a place on the white mattress. He stood near the girl. His hands were holding a notebook and a pen, something more convenient to use than the parchment, quill, and ink, which he brought from his Muggle house. "I guess you are a duellist, looking at your condition right now," he showed a wry amusement at the girl. "I'm Zach Zaphiere, one of the interns here. May I know your name, house, school year, and..." he stopped to give another quick judgment on the girl's condition, "Your reason to come here?"

His gaze was always judging, and his words were always blunt; one might take it as an offensive gesture unless they were saints.

𝕴t didn't take long before someone attended to her, luckily. Vera wouldn't put it past the school to prepare for such events, bringing together more helpers than usual. After all, to win a duel, you had to knock out as many opponents as possible before time ran out. The best case scenario would be to knock out an entire team, but other factors were also affecting the natural course of a duel.

Vera gave the best smile that she could muster. The helper attending to her was a tall boy. Pale skin, black (?) eyes and matching dark hair. "Hello."

He wasted no time and immediately brought her to a bed to sit at. "Thank you." She couldn't help but drop onto the bed, not bothering to make less of a sound as the bed frame rattled a bit. As long as it didn't break, Vera let herself melt, grateful to be off her feet.

"I am, yes," she affirmed his guess. Unless people were having fights in the hallways, there was hardly any excuse to be at the hospital wing except to recover from the duels.

She cleared her throat. "My name's Verity. I'm a first year in Hufflepuff, and..."

"Well, you guessed it already. My duel just finished and I wasn't knocked out, so I had to come down by myself. A bit..."

Vera paused, unsure of how to describe the situation. She was annoyed, yes, that Hogwarts made athletes who were still standing make their way down by themselves. But the ones who couldn't needed the assistance, she agreed. She still believed that if the school had thought out their floor plan better, then they wouldn't be having this issue.

Vera shrugged. "It's not the best but it could be worse."

She watched him write in his notebook, grinning a little at the sight. He had to be a Muggle-born, she thought. Vera was still learning how to use a quill, as it was part of their supplies list. It hadn't crossed her mind that she could've just brought six months worth of pens to use instead. Pens were far more advanced, practical, and portable compared to quills and inkpots. Come Christmas break, she would go out and buy those pens.

Then, she took a closer look at the boy attending to her. Black hair, pale skin. There were a lot of people in this school with that appearance, sure, but this boy in particular looked... familiar.

Vera hummed. "Apologies if I'm incorrect, but have we met before? I believe I've seen you around."

The pen moved quickly. The intern scribbled all the necessary information coming from the girl. "Verity," he nodded. And as he guessed, the girl was indeed a duellist. He was pretty proud of his deductive thinking skills, feeling like he was a detective at the moment of the reveal. "Being a duellist is fun, except for the part where we get injuries. I often duelled when I was in my first and second year, by the way, which was..." he stopped. Calculation was never his best trait, even for the simplest one. He needed time to make sure his answer was right. "Two years ago." Didn't put his stationery, Zach continued, "How was the result?" His brows lifted, expecting a worth-mentioned outcome, which he was sure it was the case. She wouldn't have the energy to come here by herself if the result were otherwise.

"Apologies if I'm incorrect, but have we met before? I believe I've seen you around."

He grinned. "I often wander around. Sometimes in the library to..." he paused, weighing whether he should tell her of if it would be too much information, "look for some sources. But I have seen you once in the Duelling Club. You had duelling sparring with Raizel, which I'm also curious about how you knew her. I remembered she didn't do duelling anymore." His relationship with Raizel has been a bit weird lately. He seldom got her attention, whether to have a fun thing together or stress over academic burden. He wondered where the lioness was now.

Zach came back to the assessment again. "So you're coming here after the duel. Can you tell me how you feel now? Pain? Maybe there were some wounds like abrasions, burn wounds, or anything else somewhere? Since it's from a duel, maybe also jinx or... curse?" He didn't hope she got the last one because it would be difficult for him to handle. "I'm asking so I can get the appropriate things to treat you."

He tilted his head, waiting for her response. Though he was better compared to the previous years, he still should improve his communication skills. His way to be a good healer was still long.

𝖁era's eyes lit up. She didn't think duellists and healers went together, but the idea made more sense as she thought about it. Duellists harmed, but they could heal when the situation called for it. Healers were adept at healing spells and, by the sounds of it, they needed some knowledge of other spells to reverse the damage. The context in which they were found in were vastly different, but they had overlaps at times.

"You duelled too?" Vera asked. She frowned at hearing his so-called early retirement (if she was allowed to call it that). "Did injuries stop you from continuing to duel?"

It wasn't a crazy consequence. The spells Vera had seen and become victim to in the last two days were not watered down like they were in class. No, these people were out for blood; they were out for a win. Vera couldn't fault them for it, of course, but it meant the damage these spells could supposedly do were very much real, if not moreso than she anticipated.

"My team won, but only by pure luck," she said. A breathless chuckle left her throat. "It felt like we were losing for so long. And then, suddenly, we knocked out two in one round. A miracle, really."

Looking back on it now, Vera doubted they would've won had the tables not turned in their favour. The Gryffindors went idle a few times, buying Vera enough time to set up her smokescreens, dodge, or deal damage. Her teammates, despite their luck, had also held on even with backfired spells and some stage fright. It was stressful, no doubt. But she was glad it was over.

(They would have to do it all again next year, but that was a problem for future Vera.)

Her memory was not completely shot, it seemed, as the boy confirmed his presence at her duel against Raizel. She raised an eyebrow. "Ah, so that was you. Pleasure to finally meet you." A curt nod. Then, "You know Raizel?"

"She was still a duelling captain when I became one, but we hardly talked before that day."

She fiddled with her hands. Hogwarts was not exactly a small school, taking students from all over the United Kingdom, not just England. But it seemed the wixen population was even smaller, because Hogwarts was beginning to look like a small world after all. Raizel was a former duelling captain and this boy was a former duellist. Had they played in the same seasons in the past? Perhaps they did, unless they knew each other outside of it. Same year group?

Her questions would remain unanswered for a little bit as the focus shifted back toward her recovery. Right, yes, that was what she was here for. Vera looked down at her robes. "Definitely burns. I was lit on fire a handful of times. I'm... not sure about much else. I was trying to remember on my way here, but I couldn't recall."

"How would I go about getting replacements for my uniform? I think these robes are a bit... too far gone to be repaired." As a former duellist, he had to have an answer, right? Vera couldn't have been the only person continuously ablaze.

Then, "Oh! Apologies, but what's your name? Just in case someone asks if there's someone already seeing me."

Zach shook his head. "Injuries didn't stop me from duelling. In fact, I was often unconscious even before the duel ended. Maybe I was an easy target back then," he chuckled. "But my team always won," he shrugged. "For me, that was the most important part in the competition, to help my house win and have fun."

He tapped his pen on the notebook before he continued, "I left duelling because I was busy. Prefect and broom racing co-captain for Ravenclaw. Not to mention that I signed up for a healer internship here." He sighed, "Chaotic. I'm happy I'm freer now. Only healer internship left in my pocket."

"My team won, but only by pure luck,"

"You think so?" he asked her. He stopped, forming the words he had in his head. "Luck is also a determining factor in competition. One must be grateful when they have luck on their side," Zach said. "I don't really believe in the saying 'The result will never betray the effort". Sometimes the result betrays the effort when you aren't lucky enough. Still, making a good effort is important," he grinned. "Do you still think luck isn't important now?" he raised one of his brows. The corner of his lips lifted, expecting her answer.

"Raizel is my friend. One of the closes friend I have," he smiled, though his eyes couldn't hide something wrong with their friendship at the moment. People change, they said, but Zach really wanted to know the reason. "She's in the same year as me. We sometimes did duel sparring before she changed sports to broom racing. She's a very good duellist. The best, in my opinion."

He shook his head. "You said you are a duelling captain. Isn't it hard to manage your team? Especially when you just entered the school, and most of the people are older than you?" He still had a question in mind, but he refrained from asking it since it would be rude. The boy was really judgmental at first place but he tried to keep professional and kind to his patients. After all, rapport building was important, as explained by his grandfather.

"So burn wounds," he scribbled it quickly on his notes. "Can you tell me the location of the wounds? For wounds like bruises, we can check them in the visible area. For the ones in the non-visible areas, I will give you something to treat them later by yourself."

"I wish I could answer it with Reparo, but that wasn't always the case. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, depending on the severity," he said. He tried to recall his memory, "When I was still duelling, I asked my mom to send a new uniform whenever it burnt, but I got her nagging afterwards during the school holidays. She always told me to leave duelling," the boy chuckled. This also made him recall another thing, a shirt with cute blue and yellow stars embroidery, gifted from one of his closest friends. He wondered where she was now and what she was doing.

"I'll start treating you, but I need to do some preparation first. It won't take long, don't worry." he smiled. Before he left the girl, he was held by her question. "I've told you before," he chuckled. "I'm Zach Zaphiere, but feel free to call me Zach." He left the duellist to grab his things.

𝕳earing about duelling from a former duellist was different compared to talking with her peers about it. With her peers, they were all aspiring in some way to make the team. Whatever they knew about it was from their parents or imaginations. But this was real. This was the real impact left by the sport on someone who had played it, albeit only for a little bit, but still for a time nonetheless. She was beginning to see the hidden cost behind the sport, such as buying more plain black work robes.

Winning was good, yes. Vera was relieved to have survived and surprised to have won in the end. The win would go towards Hufflepuff's house cup points at the end of the month. But the fact that she was a first year, a first year captain, and a Muggle-born all made the win more special. Maybe this was her place in the wizarding world after all.

So, she just sighed with a smile. "I suppose."

What came next surprised Vera. Captain of the broom racing team? As a duellist? Not to mention also being a prefect at the same time. "Wow, that's quite a resume." She stared at him with wide eyes. "Did you leave prefectship and captaincy due to time pressure, in the end?"

Vera hummed. Luck and effort went hand in hand, she knew. But her opponents had been the year above her while her team was composed of herself, another first year, and a second year. How much could effort contribute to such an unbalanced matchup? Zach was right. Luck was very important, because how else would they have won that?

Still, Vera chuckled. "I guess I can only know once I've done more duels. Unless they kick me off the team, I'll be playing again in the winter."

Mentioning Raizel made the air shift, that much Vera knew. Though, unlike Raizel's unsettling presence, this one felt like a different kind of weight. Raizel was scary, her presence Vera once described as 'death having warmed over', which was pretty descriptive. Vera was still scared of Raizel, though her skills were undeniably admirable. Did something happen to them when Raizel switched sports? Vera was not sure she could ask.

All she could do was nod. "She was definitely a difficult opponent. I wonder why she stopped..." She whispered the last part to herself.

Zach voiced her concerns about being a first year Muggle-born captain that she'd been mulling over since being given the position. "It's definitely difficult," she said with a nod. "There was another first year captain with me as well, but then he suddenly left. It would've been nice if he stayed, you know, for solidarity."

"But I've been managing. I don't coach anyone since, you know... But I manage all the administrative stuff like roster changes, which most people hate."

Vera was okay with that, of course. While she was still learning the ropes of the sport, figuring out the best spell combinations with what she had and learning new ones, being on desk duty (so to speak) was not the worst.

She smiled. "Everyone in Hufflepuff is quite nice about it. Or, at least, nobody's questioned why I'm in the position. But it's still overwhelming."

Coming back to her wounds, Vera peeled off her burnt robes, cringing at the ashen fibers that crumbled with so much as a movement. Her white blouse had been burned right through in two spots, revealing burns surrounded by brown and black cloth. "One on my arm and one on the side of my stomach. There may be some more surface burns?" She looked around at the other brown patches. She nodded as Zach laid out her options, grateful that she would have something to bring back for more personal wounds. "Thank you."

She chuckled. "I think if I told my parents the same, they would also tell me to leave." Then, she shook her head. "A new robe it is, then. At least the school supplies list made us buy extra." They would quickly run out if she didn't handle it before the winter games, but it was enough for now.

Vera felt a little embarrassed to have missed his name. "Right, yes. I must've missed that. Thank you, Zach." She smiled as he left.

So, Vera was left to her thoughts. She picked up her robe and hummed as she examined the burns. It wasn't much compared to her blouse, since she'd taken it off part-way through the match. But the damage was still there. If her parents ever found out, they would definitely have a word. Muddy clothes were fine; they could be washed. But burnt clothes? That would almost never be repaired.

The small talk (that turned into something a bit more personal than small talk) was likely not ideal for Zach because then it meant he spent more time with her than with all the other duellists that also needed attention. She pursed her lips as she folded her robe and put it to the side. Once he treated her burns, she would be up and out.

"Time pressure..." Zach paused and sighed, "Yes, one of the reasons is the high stress from it. I thought I could do it all and be okay. But no, I couldn't. I was too greedy, I guess. I don't even really know my peers in the same year," He looked away after emitting the sour line. One that made him regret his decision. Zach wasn't the brightest Ravenclaw. He didn't get the perfect score, and he made bad decisions. But he learnt from what life taught him, the wisdom and enlightenment that brought him to his better self. "But now I slowly know my peers. I have another friend from Hufflepuff, who is very kind to me," he stopped. He once again gave too much information.

"Solidarity. It's such a typical Hufflepuff thing to say," Zach chuckled. "People come and go, and we can't really prevent that. Which is sad," he said. He saw and observed many people around him and got to experience it. He saw Life as an unpredictable thing at first, but slowly, he started to understand and get used to it. "But listening to you, I think you are doing great as a captain."

The intern took quick notes on the wound's location. "Noted." He also nodded at her statement about the parents. "Especially when they are a Muggle. Many times I make sure to tell my mom that I will be okay here," he giggled. "And yes, buy more pairs since you are a duellist. There is more than one fire conjuring spell variation," he nodded.

He left the duellist to take everything he needed. Burn healing paste, sterile water, underpad, kidney dish and gauze. He also took something from his bag. He put them all in a dressing trolley. He came back pushing the thing. "This stings a little bit, but we must clean the wound." He put on a pair of clean rubber gloves. "Bear with me for a moment," he poured water to clean the debris on the wound. With a gauze, he tapped the area on the wounds and their surrounding gently. After he assessed it once again, he dried the wounds and their area. "It doesn't need a wet dressing since the paste is moist enough," he mumbled. Then he applied the paste to the wound.

As a finishing step, he took his wand and cast, "Ferula." He cast it precisely to cover the burn wound areas he had cleaned. "It would take a few minutes to a few hours before the wound healed completely. After that, you can throw off the bandage." He cleaned up all the mess he made. Then he gave the girl a small cup of a paste. "It's Bruise Removal Paste, I made it. Just in case you found some later. I have many of them since I always practice and restock my healing potions," he smiled. "And if you're worried about scars, I would recommend you go to Nurse McLoughlin. I think she might have a scar healing potion. Something Ubbly, I forgot," he nodded. "Oh! You can also go to Professor Lesmana. I also remember he said he has a speciality in healing potions or something in class, though he might be in Slytherin right now," he grinned. "I think he's a pretty cool Professor. I might be biased since he mentioned healing potions as his speciality. I wish he could go back to teaching Potions again.

"Anyway, you are free to take some rest in here, but my suggestion is to come back to the dorms since it will be more comfortable there," he said. "I will go back to the nurse station. Don't hesitate to call me if you need anything. Get well soon." With that, Zach left the girl with his trolley at the nurse's station. He cleaned the trolley and wrote his report.

What a nice day to know more people and to treat them.
