It was a few weeks into the school year, most people already settled in, knowing who they sat with, spent their time with, and bothered themselves with. This was the case for Valencia, having made a few Slytherin friends quickly and a few Hufflepuff as well, to her surprise. There was one group that she stayed away from, though- Gryffindors. Her upper year Slytherins had told the first years on day one to not get involved with the Gryffindors, "They only cause trouble." she recalls one of them saying, but she never questioned it, besides, everyone knew about Slytherin and Gryffindor's rivalry from the moment they entered Hogwarts, to the moment they left.
Valencia had always been wary of the rule, questioning if the Gryffindors' "trouble-making" was real or not. Nevertheless, Valencia followed the rule, never sitting, talking, or even interacting with a Gryffindor. That was, until her schedule was changed. "Due to the overpopulation of students, we will be moving your herbology to third period instead of its original second period." is what the note that she had received at her dormitory's door had said.
Valencia scoffed at the note, "They can't be serious, can they? All of my friends are in second period!" She had originally pouted at the note before becoming largely annoyed with the change. Valencia had no say though, she knew her schedule was stuck until a person of authority changed it, so all she could do was roll her eyes and grumble as she walked to third-period Herbology.
As she walked into Greenhouse #1, her eyes scanned the room, looking hopefully for someone she recognized, before she froze- was she the only Slytherin in here? Her mouth went dry as she cursed under her breath. She had already been running late; now all eyes were on her standing at the Greenhouse's doors. She scanned the room, looking for an open desk, making her eyes widen when she saw one, single, open seat- next to a Gryffindor. She gulped, knowing she had no choice as she met his gaze before clearing her throat and walking over cautiously and taking a seat next to the Gryffindor boy.

✧ Max had arrived early to the greenhouse as he usually did. When there was so much to do, it was no reason to wait to get his hands dirty. The time passed in a blur of pruning, turning over soil and conversation with the plants. The time closed in on the time class was supposed to start, and Max found himself a seat by his usual workstation off to the side in the front. He liked this placement, it was perfect for keeping his attention where it should be. Close enough to the professor to be kept a close eye on, and off to the side to not distract his peers if his mind were to wander. That no one filled the seat to his side didn’t bother him in the slightest. His friends knew he despite wanting the company, often preferred working alone in this class as he could take advantage of his time and fill in the extra time caring for his favorites.
When someone seemed to arrive one second before being officially late, he first didn’t notice. Not before the room went all quiet and everybodys eyes found the same target did he look up and spotted the slytherin standing just inside the door. He failed to put two and two together by noticing she was the only one in green present. He rarely noticed what specific classes were shared with each house. Being well aware of the embarrassment of being late tended to bring he swept over the room with his eyes, before meeting the eyes of the girl and gesturing to the seat beside him, at the precise moment the girl seemed to realize that was the only option as well. Hurrying to declutter his station a bit, Max hesitatingly placed a few of his plants on the ground and began scooping dirt from the table. He managed to clear away a bit before the girl took a seat. He shook his gloves a bit to get rid of the wet soil clinging to them. After a bit he dragged his gloved hand through his hair and ruffled it while putting on a stupid grin «You’re Rose something, right?» He was terrible with names in general, but with the ones associated with flowers and plants he at least stood a chance. «Happy to be partners today!» He added with a light chuckle while trying to rid his hair of soil to no avail.✰

Valencia quickly looked around as she saw the boy pat the seat next to him- "Are there no other options?" she mentally grumbled to herself, hesitating before walking over and sitting down, eyeing the messy space he was quickly trying to clean. She cautiously sat down while her mind raced, "I'm not supposed to be around Gryffindors." she couldn't help but think to herself. Though there had never been any stated punishment, the rumors of the trouble that came from Gryffindors and Slytherins clashing was enough for her to not question it.
As she sat down, she glanced up at the boy as she took out her textbook and began sliding her protective gloves on. That's when she heard his voice speak up, "You're Rose something right?" she could feel his smile through his words. Her eyes followed the voice right next to her as she looked at him for a moment, not saying anything as she watched him run his gloved hand through his hair, some of the wet soil hadn't come off of the glove when he had tried to brush them off, allowing some of the left over particles to take place in his hair, making her raise her eyebrow.
"Rosegold," she hesitated, "That's my last name, my first is Valencia." She spoke her first name slightly more quietly than she had her last name, wondering if she should've told him that or not. Valencia didn't mind the boy not knowing her name, "At least he got part of it." she thought to herself while staring at the boy. Valencia had never placed herself around Gryffindors, so she had no clue what this one's name could be. "Uh," she started kind of hesitantly, "is your name... Andrew?" she guessed, knowing she was probably entirely wrong; she had just gone off of looks.
At his happy remark towards being partners, Valencia stiffened slightly, "Aren't Gryffindors supposed to be mean?" she had thought to herself, remembering her first-day warnings from some of the upper years, "But this boy seems... nice?" her face held a question and a raised eyebrow, but she quickly shook it off as she took a deep breath and forced a small smile, "Yeah, I'm happy to work with you today, too." she relaxed slightly, realizing that maybe this class wouldn't be as bad as she thought it would be with a Gryffindor beside her, "Oh, and what's your name, by the way?" she had quickly stuttered out before her body could stop her, leaving herself confused at why she would want the boy's name; just because she should be friendly, doesn't mean she had to know him, so why all of a sudden was she asking for his name?

✰ The advantage with herbology being doing his own thing at mostly his own speed vanished in a cloud of smoke. He didn’t mind having a partner, he truly didn’t. It just complicated his workings a bit. Not being able to spread out over the entire table, trying to be quiet as to not disturb his partner. But he supposed there were advantages with it too. He would make less of a mess, and probably stay more on task.
He followed her movements with his eyes as she pulled out her book and put on gloves. Finally deeming it the right time, he offered up a hand. «Yeah, Rose something» He agreed with a nod. It was great of him to even remember that much. «Valencia» He repeated, trying and most likely failing to commit the name to memory. Her guess at his name wasn’t that bad either. He supposed Max and Andrew could sound a bit similar. Smiling he shook his head a little. «My name is Max, but I suppose the Drew part of Andrew could sound alike?» He added a small laugh, more to make fun of his own conclusion than to make fun of her.
Not really sensing any of the conflicts Valencia felt, he persisted with the conversation. «So, who do you usually partner with in this class? I usually make a bit of a mess, so I mostly work alone» He admitted with a quick smile.✰

My cheeks flush with embarrassment, thinking he's trying to poke fun at me getting his name wrong. "Max..." I repeated to myself quietly, completely embarrassed from getting his name entirely wrong. I nod as I repeat his name, trying to store it to memory, though I wasn't sure if it would actually stay.
As I slide on my protective gloves, I'm surprised when I see him extend a hand to me willingly. i raised an eyebrow slightly and studied his hand that was extended to me before studying his expression. It didn't seem like he was up to trouble, so I hesitated for a moment more before shaking his hand lightly, "I'll try to remember that." she mumbled almost inaudibly, referring to his name.
I took a deep breath as I opened my textbook, readying myself for the class as I began to read the prologue to the lesson chapter before hearing him speak up. I perked up slightly, the memories of Herbology with my friends flashing through my head before I shook it off. "I usually sat with some of the girls from Slytherin, they're really the only friends I had in that class." I shrugged semi-casually before turning to him, "Do you always work alone?" I raised a skeptical eyebrow- a Gryffindor working alone was something I hadn't ever heard of.
As I wait for his response, I begin picking up the plant's pot and adjusting it on the desk, spilling some of the soil and causing some to land in both my and his lap. I froze before looking at him to apologize quickly, "Oh gosh, I'm so sorry, I should've been more careful!" I hit myself lightly on the forehead from embarrassment as I begin sweeping the soil off my lap and onto the ground.

Picking up on awkwardness and the lack of easy flow in the conversation was not something he was good at, so he simply continued caring for one of the dittany plants that still had a place on their table. Through smiles and pruning he listened to Valencia talk about her usual partners. «That sounds great! Do you usually like herbology?» He really couldn’t fathom the opposite, but the polite thing was still to ask. He hesitated a bit before looking over at her to answer her question. «No, not always. I partner up if anybody needs help, or I or my friends really want the company that day» A slight shrug and a tilting of the head as he widened his grin. «But I truly don’t mind working either way. My head is sort of all over the place sometimes, and I’m not that good at finishing a task before starting another so sometimes it’s just easier to be on my own. That way nobody but me is inconvenienced, you know?» He flushes a bit over the admission, suppose the vulnerability was a tad much.
He watches with interest as she lifts one of the pots. Just curious for her to show her skills. When the soil spills he cannot help but snort. How many times hadn’t he done that exact thing himself? Too many to count. But he puts a stop to the oncoming laugh once the girl seemed embarrassed. «It’s alright!» He stands up slightly and brushes off the soil. «It’s all fine, see?» Patting down his clothes once more for her inspection. Sitting back down however, his eyes wandered to the plant, assessing. «I do think though that Herman could use a refill of soil»
