THE SORTING CEREMONY DAY
- The day had arrived, Victoria was excited, she expected this since her birthday 10. Throughout the whole summer and talking about her arrival to Hogwarts, making than the people around her get annoyed, but her mom could only laugh and further fuel her enthusiasm.
When she come to the Great Hall, her eyes sparkle with illusion and enthusiasm, she couldn't stay still because of the excitement. But at the same time, her internal dialogue doesn't shut up, debating about all the alternatives, about the houses, the subjects, the teachers, about all. Her brain doesn't stop, making her be quiet imagining all the possibilities. The other future students look at her with strange looks, someone murmur "Is she okay?". Victoria looked like a nervous puppy.
They started calling names one after another, Victoria hear the names of the houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw
Ravenclaw was her dream house. Her newest hyperfixation was Rowena Ravenclaw, the founder. She learned about her whole history. She was convinced she would be a worthy Ravenclaw.
"SIU VICTORIA"
Victoria (Again) was into her thoughts, but, they called her name, but someone shake her shoulder, making her bubble explode.
The girl started to walk nervously towards the Sorting hat. The headmaster, Solomon Lear, gives to her a little smile, recomforting her. Victoria take a sit, and the Sorting hat started to analyse her mind.
"Well, you are very intelligent" Victoria smile "But a little reckless... You can't be a Ravenclaw" Victoria's smile fade away "Hey!, don't put that face... I see, you are loyal... But you are not brave enough to be a Gryffindor, and, obviously you are to limp for be a Slytherin... You are a HUFFLEPUFF!".
The Hufflepuff table started to cheer and clap. Victoria walks towards them, smiling. Maybe it was her dream house, but, they make her feel welcome.
your a sunflower, I think your love would be too much

Sorting Ceremony
The Hat Choice
Aurora entered the Great Hall with a steady, excited, and happy demeanor. Finally, her dream had come true! Her heart overflowing with joy, yet also with a sense of uncertainty. She didn't know which house she would be assigned to. She had never truly asked herself what she wanted or what she was good at; after all, what she presented was merely a facade. Her true self and thoughts were truly unpredictable. Pushing aside her complex thoughts, A glanced at the rows of tables laden with food. Each row represented a house, the house she was about to be sort to.
Aurora sat down in her seat. She felt many eyes on her and the other first-grade students, but she didn't feel nervous. First, the principal introduced the teachers for the school year, followed by the Sorting Hat performance, the most anticipated part for the first year students. It began with the hat's poem, and just as Aurora had been told, it was indeed a rather boring but also quite funny poem. Because the order was based on the students' last names, and alphabetically from A to Z, Aurora had to wait a while before it was her turn. When her name was called, she calmly walked to her seat and placed the hat on her head.
“Well, what a mysterious student, isn't you?” the hat said, “even I'm wondering which house to put you in, but everything will be alright. Your name is Aurora, isn't it? What a beautiful name!” Aurora wondered what the hat had said. Was sorting herself into a house really that difficult? To her, they're all the same… The Sorting Hat continued, “Hmmm… you're brave and courageous, to be honest, you're like a Gryffindor, but you use reason instead of emotion when solving problems. When faced with a difficult decision, your brain tells you not to get into trouble. A Gryffindor would be much more impulsive and energetic than you. You have the qualities of a Hufflepuff, but you also have other unique characteristics…”. Aurora felt surprise then the hat said. She don’t know whether she had that such “unique characteristics”. “Both Slytherin and Ravenclaw would suit you, Aurora, but that's a disadvantage, because you can only be sorted into one house…”, the Hat continued whispering to her.
It seemed like quite a while had passed, and the Hat still hadn't made a choice. Whispers could be heard coming from around the houses. Another case where the Hat was having trouble . “You possess a formidable intelligence and keen observational skills”, the Sorting Hat continued, “but your courage and ambition are more suited to Slytherin.” For Aurora, all the houses seemed like good choices, but if she were to be sorted, she thought she would go to Hufflepuff, because she felt she lacked the noble qualities the other houses demanded. The Sorting Hat suddenly spoke after a moment of thoughtful silence, “Then my final choice, your elegance and refinement mixed with a touch of eccentricity and erratic thinking, would be more fitting for… RAVENCLAW!”
Aurora was utterly astonished to hear she had been sorted into Ravenclaw. Aurora house that valued intelligence, learning, and individual thinking styles? Would she be able to keep up with the students of Ravenclaw, who were blessed with exceptional intelligence and unique personalities? Questions and doubts swirled in her mind. But as she walked to the Ravenclaw table and heard the welcoming applause, she involuntarily smiled. She now had a second home at Hogwarts, a home she would be connected to for many years, a place she would surely never forget.

The Great Hall Sorting Ceremony 1057 words
Ophelia didn't know what she was feeling; fear? anxiety? excitement? She didn't know anything about magic, yet. Her parents told her to be cautious of her surroundings, have fun, and be mindful of the people around her, but most importantly, to have fun.
Having to leave her parents so soon wasn't what she was expecting. The next thing she knew after buying her stuff was that she stood in the train station, hugging her family so tight as if it were the last time they were seeing each other; it wasn't, but it was the first time they'd be separated for so long. She gathered up her courage and thought to herself: This is it. I'm going to Hogwarts. This is it.
She headed to the wall, after seeing everyone else, who were apparently also sending their children, older or the same age as Ophelia, depending on who she was looking at, letting their child go through it first. She assumed it was a magical wall, and after saying her final goodbyes, she closed her eyes and walked into- through the wall.
It felt funny, the going through the wall part, and she felt ticklish while doing it. When she thought she'd gotten past that part, she opened her eyes. Spark. That was what could be seen in them. Her breath hitched; the train was huge. At first, she was doubtful about hundreds of children, and maybe even more than ten adults, fitting in the train, but seeing the thing now, oh, she did not doubt anything anymore.
"This is really happening," she murmured under her breath. Following the other students' actions, she then found an empty compartment and sat next to the window. She put her luggage in the overhead racks and closed her eyes. Time for daydreaming.
She heard the door slide open, and two or three other people sat down next to her. Ophelia opened her eyes just slightly, seeing three other girls who looked her age, maybe a year or two older. She then immediately closed her eyes when she saw one of them look at her, noticing Ophelia's almost-open eyes, and smile. The girls chatted with each other, respecting the non-verbal 'I'm still getting used to these things, please don't make me talk' message.
Ophelia listened to the girls talk about their last year in Hogwarts and their expectations for this year. She was curious and didn't understand a lot of things said, but eventually, she opened her eyes and asked. "Could you... um... I don't even know what I want. I'm a, uh, first year and I don't know anything about Hogwarts...?" The statement sounded like a question. The girls giggled and offered to help. The girls were... relatively easy to talk to.
"So, there are Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and...?" Oh, the names were somewhat difficult, she'd thought. "Ooh, ooh, Hufflepuff!"
"Yes!" the girls cheered. It was probably Ophelia's fifth attempt to get all of the names right. The general information, or whatever the girls had found worth knowing before entering the castle, was shared by them just before the guessing game started.
"Where would you like to be?" one of them asked. Ophelia thought about the question. Did it really matter? As long as she had a roof above her head, she'd be satisfied. The girls had even said that students from different Houses were friends with each other, so did it really matter which House Ophelia was in? As long as she was in one?
"I don't really care, but Ravenclaw sounds curious," she said. "I just want to have fun inside and outside of school, and be successful academically in it. Oh, are the lessons difficult? Because I know nothing about magic!" she rambled. It was starting to occur to her how difficult it is for... what did they call them again, ah, 'muggles', to start going to Hogwarts or other similar schools, when they didn't know anything.
It was time for them to change into their robes. As they were doing that, one of the girls reassured her. "You're going to be fine, I'm a muggle-born myself. They start easy enough for us to follow, and when it starts to get difficult, we already know just as much as pure- and half-bloods do." The train came to a halt slowly. They took down their luggage and headed out.
Entering the Great Hall along with the rest of the first-years, Ophelia felt something between nausea, anxiety, and excitement. Oh, this was happening. The group followed the teacher's lead to the front, and then listened intently as the headmaster gave his speech.
Ravenclaw would be nice, actually. Or Hufflepuff, or Slytherin, or, or, or, Gryffindor.
Ophelia still didn't have the slightest idea which House she found more interesting. She could befriend anyone else from any other House, so who cares?
I like that green color, it's nice. And the blue is pretty, too. The red and yellow would look so cool when mixed, like fire!
She was having very off-topic thoughts while she should have been listening to the speech. Soon, the names were being called. Each student sat on the stool, the pointed witch hat was put on their head, and after some time in silence, the hat yelled out the House. After oh so many names, she was one of the last, okay... here we go...
Ophelia was startled when the hat started talking, despite already having heard it more than fifty times. The hat was stating facts at her about herself, some of them she hadn't been sure were true until the hat stated them out loud. Out loud? Could the others hear the hat? She didn't think so. If the hat had been talking to every single student and they couldn't hear the words, then others couldn't hear the almost one-sided conversation now, too.
"I don't care which House you put me in, I just want to find good friends." She said quietly, scared that the teachers surrounding her could hear her.
"Hmmm..." the hat's voice echoed in her head, "Well, then, I have the perfect House for you. GRYFFINDOR!"
Loud cheers from the Gryffindor table could be heard as the hat was taken off her head and as she ran to sit next to another student in her House. Oh yes, this was perfect.

When I entered the room, I was extremely impressed. I had always imagined what the inside of Hogwarts would be like just from stories told by relatives, but now, amazed, I see that Hogwarts is much more than it seemed; it's truly an incredible place!
As I joined the First-Year students in the center of the Great Hall, I felt impacted and ecstatic. The talking portraits, which despite being familiar with the practice, I had never seen so many with such beauty and with historical figures. The other older students cheered me up when I thought about meeting new people, in addition to all the comfort I thought I would have now living in a castle, with daily banquets and all the incredible learning I had always dreamed of. A mixture of minimal anxiety and great joy spread throughout my being.
Upon entering the hall, I noticed the tall, gray-haired man in armor, very welcoming and kind. I greeted him politely instead of imitating other students who ignored him, perhaps out of shyness or not. He looked quite old but had a very gentle attitude, like a loving and friendly grandfather, which caught my attention.
I noticed the way he limped, wondering if it was a regular health problem or an epic event, given the way he dressed. After noticing the impact of the large doors behind everyone, I saw that now, finally, my journey at Hogwarts had begun!
With great attention, I fell silent and savored every second of the moment and every word while there.
Amazed, but as always, analytical, I noticed the voice-amplifying spell, wondering how it worked, according to many theories.
After that, the interaction between the headmaster and the hat made me perceive something sympathetic and charismatic, something familiar among those present, even for a hat, which, incidentally, seemed much less worn than my parents said it was.
Excited about my future house, lodging, and roommates, I wondered which house would be best, perhaps obviously Ravenclaw, for my eminent creativity and wit, but also secondarily Slytherin, for my desire and determination to become someone wise and powerful, but of course, always with my conduct and sense of justice, I never ruled out Gryffindor or Hufflepuff.
The long parchment forced me to question how long it would take to reach the letter H and especially my name, and furthermore, how to bear such anxiety? How would I behave with a sea of eyes watching me as I approached the Sorting Hat?
So lost in thought that I barely paid attention to the Hatter's song, only hearing some expressions that caught my attention, such as the characteristics of each founder and house, wondering what it must have been like in the time they lived? Already preparing to research this in Hogwarts History or any book I could find.
After a few long, enjoyable minutes of celebrating with the freshmen, and of course already trying to make friends, my name was finally called.
"Harry Branddor!" Hearing that made me even more excited, and the energy that had vanished while waiting for my turn quickly returned. Still focused on being myself, I hurried towards the professor holding the hat, always with a slight smile and a positive look to charm the people around him. I sat on the bench, somewhat apprehensive and happy, but above all focused on what the hat would say.

I also wondered, how many people were born from one generation to the next? Given the headmaster's expression, despite his experience, he seemed somewhat surprised by the extensive list of new students this year.-Well... just relax and be yourself, we should be who we are and with that, have what we truly deserve-

He possesses great cunning, a brilliant mind I would say, almost unique...he has a lot of creativity and analytical ability, but also a lot of ambition and a desire to achieve great things...perhaps I could place him in Slytherin, but I think it's better that he be...Ravenclaw!-
Remember faith and love, these will be your most powerful spells.

Saphira didn't know what to say. The great hall was huge! And beautiful. She eagerly looked around, trying to take in the sight at once. If the hall was already looking like that than she was sure that her time here would be incredible. Her breath was going faster at how excited she was. Saphira took a deep breath. She needed to stay calm. If she already reacted to the hall like that, than how was she supposed to survive this school? She needed to look unfaced.
She calmly stepped to the other first years. Waiting to be called by her name. A determined smile was stuck on her face. She was ready for whatever would happen now.
Forget what she just said. Saphira wasn't prepared to see a talking hat. And much less that this hat was the one who would play a huge role in her future here. Saphira was speechless once more, but quickly shook her head. What did she just tell herself? She scolded herself a bit and took in another deep breath. It will be okay.
She looked around to give her attention somewhere else to focus. And that was the moment she finally understood the meaning of the four long tables.
Saphira finally understood that each table representet one house...
In which house am I going to be? She asked herself while waiting to be called.
Saphira glanced at the tables. Four tables, for the four houses.
Am I going to be Ravenclaw? She asked herself, after all, she always thought that she was pretty smart.
Or am I going to be Gryffindor? Saphira glanced at the table for this house. She didn't think that she was pretty brave.
Or maybe I am going to be Hufflepuff? The little girl did think that she was pretty loyal, but she also heard that they often did something with animals, and she wasn't good with them.
What about Slytherin? She asked herself and glanced to the right table. She shook her head. Hopefully not, after all, she was trying her best to be nice and not arrogant. Yet, she couldn't help but smile at the thought of joining them. Since she heard about the four houses, she couldn't help but admire Slytherin and Ravenclaw.
She shook once more her head to clear her thoughts. Whatever it was going to be, it would be alright.
Don't waver now. Calm down. You can do it. Saphira told herself till it was her time to go.
She sat down on the prepared seat. The hat was placed on top of her head. And the hat started to ask her questions. She didn't know how, but she could muster the courage to answer all of them.
At the end, the hat proudly stated: Slytherin
The Slytherin people cheerfully cheered. And Saphira smiled softly at the answer. Maybe it was going to be okay. Even though she didn't want to end up as an arrogant person, maybe this house will help her to control her arrogance.

Hogwart looked beautiful. I was just getting out of the boat, in which I had just sailed towards the school with the other first-years, when the professor came. All the new students hurried after the professor. Some first-years looked around nervously, while others walked confidently - with their heads held high. I would like to believe I looked confident, but I was probably somewhere in between those two groups. I pushed the thought away, straightened up a bit, and quickened my pace to get closer to the group.
We reached the doors of the Great Hall, and the professor led us inside. The moment I crossed the threshold, my heart started beating faster. The Great Hall looked amazing. I never would have guessed, despite what my brother had told me, that the hall was so huge and beautifully decorated. I felt pride swelling in my chest that I would be one of Hogwart's students. A tall, armored man stood at the front of the hall. When he spoke, absolute silence fell, and his voice carried across the hall. This man was the Headmaster of Hogwart.
I tuned out everything around me. It happened quite often when I got stressed. My thoughts started circling around the topic that was bothering me - to which house would the Sorting Hat assign me? To be honest, I had no idea where I might be assigned. My thoughts were interrupted by applause. Confused, I looked around; most students were clapping, and some were whispering among themselves. I noticed that I had missed the moment when the Sorting Hat was placed on the chair. Director Lear still stood in the same place, but now he held a terribly long scroll of parchment, from which he began to read out students, who approached and were assigned to individual houses.
"Melanie Brown!".
My turn finally came. With my heart beating hard and my hands slightly shaky, I approached the front of the hall. The Sorting Hat was placed on my head. It was a rather strange experience. The Hat pondered aloud, mentioning traits I wouldn't have assigned to myself, and I felt like its voice echoed through my whole body. After a brief moment of thought, the Hat announced: "Well. The house you matched is... Ravenclaw!".
Everyone at the Ravenclaw table started cheering, and I walked over and sat down among them with a bit of uncertainty. Although I hadn't expected to be assigned to this house, but seeing their smiles, I relaxed. Maybe I'll really fit in here?

The great hall of Hogwarts was magnificent. The Place was filled with candles and was enchanted to look like a open sky above. She was nervous and excited, knowing that magic was in her blood. The great hall was the place her parents first met. She had heard numerous stories from her dad about how he met her mom and Hogwarts. Now she was here herself with her own wand, robes and magic.
She tried to keep her posture straight and take deep breaths just like her mother told her but it felt almost impossible looking at the imposing and powerful figures sitting on the dais. She wasn't much excited about the sorting ceremony knowing that as a pure blood she would most probably get sorted into Slytherin. Everyone had said that in her family as if it was planned. Her father used to tell her about great Slytherin wizards and witches when she got her letter. Her grandmother was the only one who thought that Serena would not go into slytherin because according to her Serena wasn't as "Ruthless" as her father and does not have the slytherin type of "Ambition" like her mother.
The temperature was pleasant but for some reason her blond locks were sticking to her neck from all the walking and everything. The ceremony officially began. Solomon lear, the headmaster of Hogwarts was calling the children one by one. Everyone was visibly nervous. A boy was called first. lanky, disheveled hair and glasses. Serena wasn't able to get his name as he went to the dais and after sometime the Sorting hat yelled.
"RAVENCLAW"
The students from ravenclaw cheered for their new addition Like anything. Serena smiled as the children got sorted but deep inside she was restless for her turn until her name was called.
"SERENA HAWTHORNE" the commanding voice of Solomon lear rang in her ears.
She was startled and jolted and walked towards the dais and sat on the seat as the hat was kept on her head.
"I know you are going to say slytherin" she whispered to the hat
"Ambitious but not Unbalanced, Devious but not that cunning, you are well with tricks too. Serena Hawthorne, i was the one who sorted your parents but they were easy with their pursuit, but you? The Sorting head said in that deep in thought tone.
"You seem hard my child but i think i know the best choice"
"GRYFFINDOR" the hat yelled and that one word made serena shocked. That one variable in life she didn't expect especially when everyone told her that she would be a slytherin. She left and sat with the Gryffindor. Body tensed and not knowing what to say.

Sienna was terrified as she entered the fateful Great Hall at the beginning of the school year. So many people she didn't know. So much to learn ahead of her. Her anxiety spiked further as she joined the long line of students to be sorted. Her thoughts were scrambled as she listened to the Headmaster's speech, unable to focus as she tried to ignore the other students around her.
However, her mother's advice rang in her mind. "I know you can do this. You can do anything you put your mind to. Make some friends and put yourself out there, dear." Sienna squared her shoulders, trying to appear confident. Inside, though, she felt like she was about to start crying. She didn't like being surrounded by people she didn't know, and she didn't like the uncertainty of her house sorting. She wished she was back in her room, drawing, and that she'd never been brought here. It was too late now, though. Her parents would never let her drop out after all. She needed this school to learn to control her magical abilities.
Another step forward as another student is called. Sienna's stomach twisted further with each move closer to the hat. She was terrified she'd get sick from having to sit in front of everyone and that everyone would laugh. 'Deep breaths, Sienna. Deep breaths.' She kept repeating that silently to herself, not even noticing she was getting too close to the person in front of her, until she accidentally ran directly into their back. "Sorry, sorry!" She whispered anxiously, earning a disapproving look from the other student. However, the other student simply turned away to focus on the Sorting Ceremony once more.
Finally, she heard her name from the Sorting Hat. She swallowed hard and trembled as she took a step closer to the stool. Her anxiety only grew as she stepped closer. 'I'll probably end up a Hufflepuff. There's no way I'm brave enough for Gryffindor, or smart enough to be either Ravenclaw or Slytherin... Maybe I could get away with Slytherin, because I'm creative... And I'll use anything available to get to my goal...' Sienna thought to herself as she took her seat on the stool and the Hat was placed on her head.
"Hmm... I see a spirit deep within you, despite your obvious anxiety tonight. You're creative, and smarter than you give yourself credit for." The Sorting Hat said, taking a moment to think about the student who's head it rested upon.
Sienna barely processed the Hat's words. She was staring at the sea of people and trying not to pass out. 'Too many people. Too much information.' She felt her breathing quicken, and the world began to spin around her as she nearly fainted, but a gentle yet firm voice managed to cut through the static finally.
"Focus on me, Sienna. Not the students." The Sorting Hat encouraged Sienna. When she managed to focus on it, the Hat was able to get a better read on her soul. "Yes, yes. You have spirit, young one. A strong soul and brave heart, despite your anxieties around other individuals. You'd make an excellent student in any house, but Gryffindor certainly stands out for you."
Sienna gasped, looking utterly bewildered. "Gryffindor? I'm anything but brave! I'm terrified of my own shadow!" She exclaimed, not understanding why the Hat would even consider Gryffindor for her. 'Did I really just say that aloud in front of everyone!?' She thought to herself, embarrassment taking over and she shrank into herself.
The Sorting Hat let out a small humming sound of curiosity, but didn't back down. "Gryffindor is about more than just being brave. It's about being noble, and humble, but ready to stand against the mold." Before Sienna could argue again, the Hat called out, "GRYFFINDOR!"
Her fate sealed, Sienna had no choice now. She rose from the stool as the Hat was removed from her head, and walked slowly towards the Gryffindor table to join her new housemates. This was going to be an interesting year for the shy and anxious girl. 'Do I really belong here?' Sienna found herself wondering that same thought long into the night as she tried to avoid interacting with the other students. She wasn't ready to talk. She needed to process how much her life had changed in such a very short time.

The Sorting that Prophets

The group of first years stood in front of the huge, dark wooden doors of the Great Hall, waiting – some anxiously and nervously, some irritably, like Dominica after the boat trip, and some excitedly. To Dominica’s horror, some soon-to-be students were even jumping with eagerness. She was not one to display her emotions so openly, especially those that might make her seem weak or naive, but she had to admit inside she felt some nervousness tug at her chest, and the forming a lump in her throat that seemed to have been stuck.
Finally, the Headmaster’s assistant managed to retrieve the roll of parchment intact and read from it in an exaggeratedly regal tone: the introduction to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, information about its houses, its most basic rules, and the schedule for the evening. Dominica barely listened; she had already read this in the Hogwarts history book, so her mind kept drifting, her gaze drawn to the bright Hall lights that contrasted sharply with the dim blue of the night she and the other first years had just left outside. She noticed the engravings and carvings on the stone walls, which stretched higher than she had ever seen before. Not even their mansion’s observatory or its dance hall had walls of such height.
Suddenly, the loud groan of the old, grand wooden door to the Great Hall opening snapped her out of her thoughts and evening daydreams. The opening of the door removed a barrier that had felt like a safe haven, which until now had protected the first years from the stares of the older students and the professors – who were even worse – seated right at the front, with the Headmaster in the very centre. Dominica inhaled and held her breath as they entered. As the group of eleven-year-olds walked through the very centre of the Hall, between the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tables, the older students at each table curiously eyed the newcomers. Some snickered, others kept straight faces, but both reactions only further intimidated the first years. Still, she walked confidently. Her gaze did not once drift to the students sitting at the tables she passed. She walked with her head held high and her shoulders pulled back, hiding her slight nervousness under the good old trick of good posture.
The group walking through the middle approached the very end of the hall, where a small platform had been installed. The children all came to a stop and gathered in a large cluster, craning their necks and standing on tiptoes to see what was on the platform. Standing at the very front, as she was rather short and did not block anyone’s view, Dominica recognised it: the infamous Sorting Hat. She carefully examined it, even without being able to get closer. Her brows furrowed; ever since she had first read about it, she had gotten extremely curious about what kind of magic powered it. Over time she had come to realise that nobody really knew, and in full honestly, that only increased her curiosity.
Eventually, the Headmaster stood up. He looked old and wise, just as most influential adult wizards appeared to Dominica. He had a closely shaven beard, long hair, and an aura that suggested he could be rather unserious. Dominica did not mind his speech; she had to admit his banter with the hat was quite humorous, but after sitting on a train for nine hours, enduring the boat ride across the Black Lake, and now having to listen to some ramblings?— she was annoyed. Needless to say, she became bored quite quickly. When he finally finished his speech, the Sorting Hat sang. It had a terrible voice, but it was entertaining, it’s not every day one saw a thousand-year-old hat singing, so the girl put up with it.
Ultimately, when all the formalities were over, the Headmaster’s assistant began calling out students’ names. She called a student based on the first letter of their surname; the student would step onto the platform and take a seat in the chair. They would put the hat on, and after either a brief second or a long, drawn-out moment, the hat would, in a loud, echoing voice, call out the name of one of the houses. The Hall would erupt into cheers, especially from the tables the first years would then join, and everything would move on to the next student.
Dominica was called in the first half of the ceremony, as her surname started with J. She strode confidently up the platform and sat in the chair. It creaked warningly beneath her, and she immediately realised that not only was the hat incredibly old, but so was the chair. She put the hat on, and it fell over her ears and down onto her forehead due to its size. She adjusted it coolly, not wanting anything to spoil her moment.
Suddenly, the hat spoke. She had not heard it speak to the other students, so it was likely that some magical hearing barrier spell had been placed upon it. She supposed only she could hear its voice. ‘Well, hello there…’ the hat mumbled in a screeching voice. ‘You are quite a hard nut to crack, are you not? You are ambitious, cunning, yet as hungry for knowledge as I have ever seen…’ It spoke almost to itself, but Dominica listened intently. She did not answer its musings, just sat tightly in the chair. Finally, the hat sighed. ‘You would have been perfectly suited to Ravenclaw; I am sure you would have achieved great things, but I feel that your path leads elsewhere, and we must not defy our fate… SLYTHERIN!’ it suddenly yelled, and the hall erupted into applause.
Dominica took off the hat and made her way to the table decorated in green and silver. It had been both her father's and her mother’s house; she was pleased to have been sorted into it. Yet the undeniable memory played out before her eyes as she walked – her father’s words: ‘They do not accept anyone less than perfect, anyone less than their own. If you ever get the honour to learn in Slytherin, you will not tell a soul of your half-breed descent.’ She had listened. That night, as she strode away from the Sorting Hat, she made herself a promise: not to speak of her secret to anyone at this table.
She shook the prefects’ hands, and those of others who extended theirs; to some questionable-looking ones, she just nodded. Walking to the very back of the table. She found an empty seat on the bench, with few students crowding a distant corner. She watched the rest of the ceremony in silence, not clapping or cheering, just thinking. She thought about the words the hat had said regarding Ravenclaw. If she were not a Johnson, would she have been placed there? Would she have avoided being stuck with the cheaters and bullies of the school and spent time with the truly intelligent students? She then told herself she had been too quick to stereotype, hoping that Slytherin might not be as bad. After all, it was her family’s house.
As the Sorting ceremony came to an end, the long-awaited food appeared in the gilded dishes. Without glancing at the entrees or main courses, Dominica reached for the chocolate pudding and served herself a generous portion. The best way to end a night yet known to man, she thought, and dived in.
