While it seemed like the two of them were mostly on the same page, Adlai had a reticence that Flash did not. There could have been many reasons why-- but the most likely one was the hesitation to trust a stranger. He couldn’t blame her. In her position, he would not have trusted someone with a bad reputation who insisted they would help.

Then again, Flash wasn’t anyone. He commanded respect in the way he carried himself, and the way he spoke. His intentions were meant to be made clear in everything he did, and he could only hope the earnestness of his concern about the voices could be heard in his speech.

While he endeavored to influence people into his favor, there was a limit to that ability. Namely, he was no longer interested in duping people into seeing things his way. It always lead to disappointment when they realized the reality he painted was curated to influence their decisions. He had used it freely in the past, thinking of social interaction like a game where he could use any tool at his disposal to win.

People weren’t numbers, however. They had their own agendas, memories, and environments who shaped who they were. It was only when you cared about them that you would be able to convince them of your way of thinking. The lesson had come with a price however. For now, he would have to fight to earn his position as someone that others followed, someone that people would flock to because they believed in him to do the right thing.

He could at least start with Adlai, and this curious new development. He needed to have a more gentle approach, one that considered her feelings on the matter.

”You’re probably worried. I wasn’t thinking, forgive me… but this must be hard on you. I imagine hearing voices out of nowhere in a brand new school must be disconcerting.” Flash didn’t look at her directly, but scratched away at the easy work, finishing out the rest of the questions he needed. ”And you’re right, we can’t do anything right now. Not after curfew, it’s just begging for detention.”

Once Flash had finished the last question, he tipped the pen back into its well and leaned back in his seat, looking out into the endless night sky visible all around them. He hadn’t looked at it in a while, only then realizing how much of the effervescent glowing dots he recognized from their placement.

”But if you tell me when you hear them most often, I can meet you by the Potions class. We can figure it out together.”

“3:30pm.” She said looking down at her paper again. “But I’m bringing someone else to if we do this.”
Leaning back into her chair she wanted to disappear. What if their listening? What if they go silent? What if...what if- she thought.

Her palms grew cold and clammy as she twisted the extra fabric of her hijab between her fingers.
Would Virgil go with her? Or maybe she should tell Elena and ask her to go instead?
Sure, she had only known Elena for a few days but they were already so close. But what if she thinks I’m crazy? There have been other’s who have heard them too but I don’t know if she’ll believe Flash...- again these negative thoughts have become a habit recently.

She knew she over thought things, after all she got it from her worrisome mother. What would mom say?- she thought and then knew her mother would pull her out of Hogwarts in an instant if she found out. But Adlai wanted the truth and was willing to keep a secret. It wasn’t lying if her parents never knew, right?

“I’d be better if we went at 4, that way it’s after class and everyone is going back to their dorms at that time anyway, so no one would pay much kind to us...right?”

That was that. The conversation had gone smoothly for the most part. Inside, Flash was abuzz with endless curiosity and questions, but he knew better than to interrogate her. Even then, she seemed to wilt as the conversation dragged on. They would certainly both be in a better mood during the daytime, even if they were planning on meeting in the ever-gloomy dungeons. Flash wasn’t particularly excited about there being an unknown third party involved, but he was willing to concede if that meant Adlai would be more comfortable.

He wouldn’t have time to grow a trust between them, the things that were happening around the castle were frightfully under-reported. He had been surprised that even though the horrifying aftermath of the attacks on the Slytherin commons were on full display in the hospital wing, the rest of the castle had a sort of hushed non-observance of it. As though they were all being told to look the other way, to not panic. He wondered what the professors were talking about behind closed doors, whether anything significant was being done.

He trusted his head of house, Professor Jensen, as he had seen the real, raw concern on her face when she came in at the end of the fiasco. She hadn’t even seen the creatures themselves, he had to describe them to her. The only thing that had been left behind was the disgusting black venom coursing through the veins of the students who had been bitten, and their screams of pain. What was she doing to protect them now, he wondered. The least he could do was follow the lead laid out before him. Whatever it was, it couldn’t just be passed over and forgotten about. People’s lives could be in danger.

Though, he hadn’t considered until that point that his life, too, might be in danger. It didn’t matter, the discovery was far more important. If he had to, he could tell Adlai and this other person to stay behind while he investigated further. The threat of danger was a thin barrier, easily barreled through with any amount of determination. These were things about Flash that Adlai couldn’t know, but it wasn’t pertinent.

Still, the questions would be pestering him all night, no doubt. He was much more interested to ‘hit the pavement’ regardless of what lay in wait for them to discover.

”I accept. I’ll be there. Even if it doesn’t work the first day, I’ll be there until we figure something out.” That was all that really needed to be said.

With their work being completed so easily, the two of them had spent the entire workshop time discussing plans to investigate the mystery. The way the tables were set up, no one was likely to have heard in on their conversation. Some of the students had even fallen asleep at their desks. Flash couldn’t wait to get back to his bed and rest his weary eyes. So long as his running thoughts let him.
