It happened in the blink of an eye. One second she was flying as fast as the wind carried her, stretching a hand to try and grasp the fleeting glimpse of gold that kept eluding her, and the other she was falling, falling, falling...

She had not seen it coming. Not in the slightest. The opposite keeper, Maisie, a literal wall that had been fending off their scoring attempts as though it was as easy as breathing, the one who had knitted her an adorable scarf she kept carefully folded on top of her nightstand, the kind and gentle brunette was. flying at a high speed towards her. It took her a few seconds to process it, for her eyes to widen in sheer terror, for her body to attempt to move out of the way — in vain.

The collision knocked the air right out of her lungs, and suddenly her fingers slipped from her broom. In a desperate attempt at recovering, she waved her hand above her head, trying to reach for her trusted Silver Arrow once more. Gravity denied her that pleasure, and her stomach dropped as her body plummeted.

It felt strange. Time appeared to have slowed down around her, as the wind hurled around her ears and she felt herself fall, fall, fall. A bird, stretching her wings and taking flight only to notice her wings had been torn to pieces and shredded, leaving only a laughable attempt at floating. The ground inched closer and closer, and her eyes shut, a single tear rolling down as she braced herself for the impact.

"Elena!!!"

One second she was falling, the next someone's arm firmly gripped her own, tearing a pained cry from her throat as the impact brutally stopped gravity in its tracks. She felt herself be hauled onto the broom and she felt her body lean onto her saviour's head resting temporarily on his back before life slowly weaved itself back into her limbs. The broom was dangerously staggering, and it took every ounce of will she possessed to assist the rescuer in tilting them back to safety, instead of letting herself collapse once more.

Her arm ached like hell, and yet she was fine. Alive. The terror that had invaded her washed away in a tiny sob escaping her lips, before she cleared her throat and locked in once more. "..—hurt anywhere, are you?” She shook her head, before realizing he couldn't possibly see her. "I am," she croaked, "thank you for- saving me." Zephyr, if her memory served her correctly. One of their second string who had taken over one of their chaser's role. And who had saved her from a very painful trip to the infirmary. The moonchild and her god-sent angel guardian were now sharing a broom, and the blonde now harvested a certain resentment towards the opposite team. Twice had they knocked one of her own from their brooms. There should be a limit to how many times one can destroy.

The longer the match went on, and the more Aodhan cheered, the more he recalled his very first official match. It dragged on, and on, and on back then, primarily because his team's seeker could not catch the snitch for their life. But he supposed the main difference between then and now, was the fact these players hadn't exactly reached the same number of swipes that Gryffindor fifth year had. He also guessed that due to everyone's lack of experience, it wasn't nearly as embarrassing.

Unfortunately, it didn't make him any less impatient.

After finally quieting down, the boy sighed. Was this what happened when teams had similar skill levels? Just one giant back and forth? He guessed it was interesting enough, with all the cheating and bludgering and—oh, there went his team's seeker! His jaw unhinged for a moment as he watched her plummet, leaning forward with intense focus. Would he need to jump in? Was it time to show the opposing team what a real threat could look like? (A title that definitely could not apply to him, but details were details and he liked to ignore details.)

The answer was no, apparently, as a familiar face swooped in to save the day—his student. Okay, that was freaking awesome.

"THAT WAS SICK, ZEE!" Aodhan exclaimed, blurting out a random nickname due to not remembering the player's actual name. But it was something 'Z' related, wasn't it? Surely it would be fine.

As he spoke, he also jumped to his feet and pumped a lone fist into the air, looking like a real sports enthusiast. A showing like that deserved nothing less, though! Even if he was stuck on the bench, he... "tutored" the same person that pulled off a crazy save. A clearcut 'W' in his book.

Rosaline hovered in the sky. One hand clutched tight on her broom, another one held the Beater’s bat closely to her body. She could sense there would be some attacks targeting their precious Seeker, Althea, because in this stage of the match, no team seemed to care about the Quaffle. So, Seeker would be a dangerous position. Her mission was to keep Althea safe. A deep breath. She calmed herself. The usual composure was back. Rosaline turned her head to check on Althea. Nothing was wrong right now. Thank Merlin.

Yet not long after, a red-haired figure soared in front of Althea, cutting the sight of the little golden ball. Blimey. That was Cece. The snitch was nowhere to be found again. Rosaline wasn’t really angry at Cece; she knew this was competition. Still, she shot Cece a disapproving expression with furrowed brows. Though Rosaline adored the red-haired girl, she didn’t like the disturbance to their team's pursuit of victory.

Rosaline hadn’t had a chance to fully process her feelings about the foul play when a bludger suddenly came for Althea. The defender's instinct overcame the urge to run away from the familiar pain. Rosaline put herself between the Bludger and Althea. The impact almost knocked her out of her broom. The ball flew past her like nothing happened after it hit her. Luckily, Rosaline made it. She could feel the dull pain in her shoulders and arms. Glancing down at the ground, she couldn’t imagine if she went down, how many bones of hers would be broken. Not this time. Rosaline shook her head and tried to focus on the game again.

Morning
Time: 10pm

Lily gaped in surprise as she saw Elena fall through the air. Time seemed to slow down as she fell. Lily was shocked; she had not at all imagined this happening even in her dreams. She screamed, "ELENA!!!" She saw that Elena was trying to grasp her broom, but alas, she could not. Lily had just imagined the worst when suddenly Zephyr shot out and grabbed her by the arm. Elena was safe. Nothing had happened to her. But maybe she was too shaken up. The look on her face was one of horror. It was bound to happen; anyone in her situation would have had the same reaction. "Don't worry, Elena. You are alright," Lily screamed at the top of her voice. Suddenly, Lily was grateful that she was not in Elena's place.

She smiled and cheered for Zephyr. He had just proved that he was a Hufflepuff. This was the first time she felt this proud of someone. "Superb job, Zeph!" Lily screamed. "Keep it up", she cheered.

Lily started pacing around again. She was getting restless again. She prayed that something like Elena's situation did not happen again, at least not to her.

She sat down again and drowned in her thoughts once more.

A penalty lap. That was not what Amelia needed. A period of time to consider her ill success in this game, contemplate her failure, question her potential. There was no way that this round would be a happy event for the second year.

With a textbook poise on her broom, Amelia tried to avoid the negative thoughts that crept in like a poison ivy attempting to possess a castle. Why couldn’t I have done better? Why was it that I had constantly messed up? Why couldn’t I have done better. It was a cold cruelty having to listen to her very own internal dialogue. As if an icy war was being battled inside her skin, a battle between what she should be thinking and what she was thinking.

It took a handful of deep breaths and the conscious repetition that she was one of the younger competitors for Amelia to finally regain a calm. It wasn’t as though she could truly be blamed, for as she always had believed if one tried their best, they couldn’t expect to be better. And she had tried her best so far… right?

It would do nothing to dwell on the misfortunes of the penalty lap, and instead she told herself that she should aim high for the rest of the game, and ignore her past misfortunes. She would do amazing fly in only a moment’s time. Well, that was all she could hope for.

“Cheers, Engels,” Cecilia grinned in response to Vera before turning her full attention to the pitch. needed to make it up to the Wonderbolts but instinct told her it was foolish to chase the quaffle now. And with their keeper’s words encouraging her foulplay, Cecilia felt somewhat emboldened. So once more, she opted for a sneakier move.

Despite the elusive nature of the snitch, the young fox retained her faith in the moon-eyed seeker. However, she was fortunate enough to participate in broom racing with the Pegasi seeker, Althea. Whilst they were not victorious, Cecilia had grown a great appreciation for her during their time flying together. Unfortunately, that also meant she was a formidable opponent who Cecilia had watched closely during her penalty lap. This ultimately led her to support their seeker in the only way she could think of — sabotage.

It seemed like an awful idea, one that would be embarrassing if executed poorly and rather cruel if successful. However, these were desperate times. So without hesitation, Cecilia swerved in front of Althea to block her line of sight.

“Sorry!” She apologised to the older girl before turning away to face another penalty lap. It was almost amusing how she and Verity were substituting one another.

Of course, Cecilia knew her actions would be met with retaliation. Therefore, she tried an eye out for the bludger that seemed so fond of her. Whether it was a strategic move or out of sheer anger, the ball came barrelling towards her as expected. Fortunately, Cecilia dodged it once more. And though it was intended to take her out, she was rather impressed by the strength behind it.

Her last course of action wasn't as helpful as she'd like it to be, but at least it proved to be somehwat useful - if only for the girl's own inner monologue. It lead her to discover a new purpose, a steady position in a game plan that seemed to play out without anyone truly orgistrating it, one where the focul point weren't bludgers or the golden hoops but rather the same colored shining orb that dodged and wieved between the raindrops with ease. And as an extension, the blonde raven right on it's tail. Sabrina's mind zeroed in on that fact, giving the girl a respite from self-torment as she navigated through the darkening sky. It wasn't until a she spoted a bludger that she sprung into action, putting her whole body into a rotation that send it flying in the direction of the opposite seeker. Another girl - beater, judging by the bat clunched in her hand - took the hit, presumably following the same string of thoughts as Sabrina herself, decided their seeker was a more valuable piece in the sky-based game of chess they all played. Or just happened to be the unluckiest girl of the second, Sabrina supposed. Too far away and with no other bludgers to swing, she couldn't do anything but watch as said title transfared to their seeker when the opposite keeper slammed into her.

Debuff fouls.
Yet again, the Wonderbolts really seemed to have it out for Althea. This time, Livia could not keep a very small, refined smile from her face as she looked on in amusement. One might have thought that, by now, the Wonderbolts would be more adept at not being observed; this was not the case. It was with a nearly fond roll of her eyes that Livia would call Verity out on her foul.

'Engels, penalty!'

Second-string actions.

As the Seekers pulled ever closer to the golden Snitch, the cheers on the ground grew ever louder. Livia wondered if the students' throats would grow raw; she certainly hoped not, as she could not ascertain a remedy at the moment. With any luck, they brought water with them.

The Quaffle.

While everyone turned their focus to what they might have thought as of sunnier and more fruitful pursuits, Geneva Bishop was still cognisant of Quaffle points. Livia's eyebrows lifted as the girl kept a firm hold on the Quaffle when necessary, fumbling it not even once, and even managing to score twice. How she had moved so quickly? Livia could not quite fathom it. 'Interesting,' she mused, her voice dry. 'It seems Bishop has scored sixty points for the Pegasi.'

The Snitch.

Although, given Elena's unfortunate fall from her broom, the Wonderbolts would focus on returning their Seeker her independence, the Pegasi would have no similar intention. As before, Althea flew towards the Snitch; this time, with no pesky snitch-blocker in her way, she found the Snitch in her outstretched fingers. 'Valeden has caught the Snitch! That is one hundred and fifty points to the Pegasi!'

Reducio

d20: 18 + 11 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 29. 29 > 26 -> she has caught the snitch!

Beaters.

Livia thought for a moment about asking Graci if she were particularly skilled in the art of Divination, as the bludger she intercepted from Avery seemed to have been hurtling towards her! At any rate, she was able to avoid the blow, which likely would have been her downfall. She orchestrated someone else's downfall, though, redirecting the bludger to poor Rosaline, who was already being targeted by Sabrina. Both attacks hit the poor girl. 'Goodness. Haven't you heard that idiom – don't beat a dead horse?'

Evasion: d20: 4 + 6 = 10

Blatchers, Saves, Returns to Broom.

During all the carnage, Zephyr dutifully returned Elena to her broom. Livia quickly totalled the points, and then announced: 'I believe that our game has concluded! The Pegasi have won with 230 points, but the Wonderbolts put up a great game. Congratulations, and I do believe it is time for either a visit to the hospital wing or a lovely lunch.'

Outcome:

The field was wide open- her path to the Quaffle was clear. While the rest of both teams seemed focused on other things, Geneva grabbed the leather ball. Weaving around the beaters, she waited until she had a clear shot. She aimed, threw the Quaffle, and… scored! Geneva’s heart leapt as the ball flew gracefully through the hoop.

Realizing that she was still unnoticed by the other players, she raced to intercept the ball again. She grabbed it- pausing for a terrifying moment to correct her balance- and shot it cleanly through the goal.

Geneva was in ecstasy. She wasn’t useless after all- she had just scored 60 points! But at that moment, she heard shouts from the onlookers, and she twisted around to see a golden glint caught in Althea’s hand. Livia’s voice rang out across the pitch. “Valeden has caught the Snitch!”

Everything was a blur. Geneva screamed “Yes Althea!” The beaters, who seemed unaware the game was over, had a scuffle, which resulted in one of Geneva’s teammates being knocked from her broom. Geneva winced. That hardly seemed fair. Hopefully she hadn’t been too far from the ground.

As Livia called the points, Geneva congratulated her team. It had been a great game, and Geneva had shown herself useful after all. True, her points had hardly mattered in the end, considering the Pegasi’s sizable lead, but it was the thought that counted, right? Setting down on the pitch, she suddenly realized how awfully cold and sweaty she was. Without wasting time, she headed towards the castle. Her first Quidditch experience had been enlightening, but she’d had enough of the outdoors for one day.
Thread left. Great game everyone!
