I didn’t know much about duelling, however I was desperate to learn more about it, so I made a poster and put it up in the common room. It was asking for two people to take part in an unofficial duel. Two people replied to my plea, so I scheduled the duel.
I turned up extremely early that morning, so I sat in the corner, reading a book that I’d found about moderating duels.
Then, about 10 minutes before Edith and Elowin were due to arrive, I stood up, and packed away my book. I went to stand where I knew moderators were supposed to stand, and breathed deeply, hoping mostly that I didn't mess up, but also that I didn't accidentally get hit by any spells.
Eventually, Edith and Elowin came, and I gave them both a small smile, before saying:
"Please stand in your positions." I was at a loss for what to say next, so I breathed deeply again, before saying, "Umm... In case you've forgotten the rules, each round you have to cast a spell at your opponent. The last person standing, who hasn't been knocked out wins. Enjoy the duel!
I looked to make sure they were both in position, before saying:
"3, 2, 1... Go!"

Edith smiled at Elowin kindly. Edith was learning to duel in hope of being a duellist in her later years, and this was the third duel in her life. Edith hoped it would end well with both her and Elowin not badly injured, (and the moderator of course, but that was obvious), because she didn't like the memories of her other duels...
Edith wished she would win this duel. She knew it was a bit selfish, but that's the whole point of a proper duel, right? She imagined what she would do if she did win. She'd rush straight to her dormitory in the Ravenclaw Common Room, take her very best quill out and write a letter to her foster mother, Ellie. After checking that Elowin was ok, of course. What if Ellie would finally be proud of her, and stop thinking that she'd adopted Edith for NOTHING?
Edith shook out of her daydream, fingering her long, brown wand nervously. She glanced at Mirada, their moderator.
"GO!" was the word she heard. Edith's blood rushed up into her head; what should she do? But, calming herself, she took a moment to think. After all, this was not a race, but a duel. And Edith was ready.

First time for everything! unofficial duel
Elowin looked Edith in the eye as Edith did to her. Elowin tried to look confident but she was terrified inside. She hoped Edith wouldn’t notice. Elowin wanted to do well in her first duel even if it was unofficial to impress her parents, who hadn’t had much time for her lately with their jobs and the upcoming baby and whatnot. She felt her tummy knot itself with nerves as she breathed in deeply. In, out, in, out she tried to steady her breathing which was very unsteady. Oh, she had nerves alright! She breathed and breathed trying to calm herself down. Before the duel Elowin had given Edith some honeydukes chocolate as a good luck present and Elowin was hoping desperately that the duel would go ok but she doubted it seeing as she only had one, one duelling spell she could do! Eeeek! She walked in to the prepared duelling space and shakily smiled at the operator (Elowin did not know what it was actually called ) who was Miranda, a second year she kinda knew. Elowin felt a little scared that she was facing a more experienced second year but, she had no time to think as Miranda shouted GO! Elowin yelled the first spell that came into her head, Tarataregrella! Elowin yelled!

The duel started off better than I could have expected - both spells hit their targets, resulting in Elowin being set on fire, and Edith doing... was that the macarena?
My eyebrows raised, as I watched everything that was happening. This duel was crazy. It was interesting to watch a duel in real life compared to reading it in books. I definitely was going to watch the next house duelling competition, particularly Ravenclaw's next match.
I hoped that neither of them were hurt, however the duel was definitely going to continue for longer - both of them were still standing. I took a deep breath, before shouting:
"Are you both all right? No-one needs to stop, do they?"
I hoped they wouldn't as I loved watching the spells being flung around. After a few seconds, I made sure I was able to watch what was going on, before shouting,
"Okay! Get your wands ready for the next round."
Once I was sure that they were both sorted, Edith still dancing, I cleared my throat, and shouted,
"The second round begins.... Now!"
As I settled back slightly, I secretly hoped that the next round would be just as exciting as the first.

Good luck! Round 2 begins now!

Edith didn't have time to realize what was happening when Elowin Pankhurst shot Tallentalagra at her. In a second, Edith was dancing wildly. She shot her own, rather weak Incendio, the fire-making spell at Elowin, but it was difficult to control when dancing! Edith wondered whether to stop her spell with General Counter-Spell, but by that time Elowin would have time to send another, perhaps worse, spell at Edith. No. It was time to attack again.

Already all the hopes for winning the duel had been slowly drained away from Edith. What am I supposed to do right now? she wondered, as Mirada Johnson, their moderator, announced the next round beginning.
"Are you both all right? No-one needs to stop, do they?" she said kindly.
Edith shook her head, gritting her teeth. Perhaps Elowin wasn't as easy to beat as she thought, even if Elowin was a first year and Edith herself was a second year, but Edith could do this. Or at least she could try.

She couldn't face the humiliation of losing a duel again. Edith tried to hide her worries, collecting up her thoughts and deciding what on earth to do next.
Because Edith wasn't ready to give up yet.

@Miranda Johnson @Edith Walkers

Elowin was not expecting to be set on fire, but you know it’s a duel! What can you expect? Elowin started planning her next move. Edith probably wouldn’t be expecting her to try the same spell again, so maybe she should do just that! She wondered I mean, I have no choice she thought to herself laughing silently! It’s the only spell I have! Elowin hated to admit it to herself but, she was terrified! Edith was a second year for goodness sake! Elowin was so so so so so so super duper scared. But she had written a letter to her sister telling her that she would be in a duel and Elowin wanted to do well for her!

When the second round began Elowin was expecting Edith to hit back, hard! But she was ready! Edith and Elowin looked at each other in a determined way, and Elowin began to plan her next move. Elowin smiled trying to stay positive. She had hidden away her nervous thoughts and was ready to rock! Elowin was really, really nervous but also excited!

Go! Shouted Miranda and Elowin was ready! She gritted her teeth and made to attack! Her wand at the ready she went for it!

Now, Edith was Irish dancing. Tarantellegra wasn't the spell that I would necessarily use, however, it was obviously doing a lot of the work for Elowin - she barely had to dodge out of the way of Edith's expelliarmus.
"Better luck next time, Edith" I said towards the two Ravenclaws, "You're both doing fine, keep going!"
Honestly, moderating a duel was nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be. All I had to do was stand there and watch. Although, I did really enjoy casting spells, so it was a bit disappointing just standing there.
“Cast your spells when you are ready!”
I wondered what the duellists were going to do this time. Hopefully something exciting, however I hoped I wouldn’t have to take either of them to the Hospital Wing quite so soon, as it had barely just begun.
I wondered what Isis would’ve thought, had she followed me down here this morning. She would’ve probably chased some of the spells around, and then jumped up to try and “catch” one, meaning she would be hit by it, and possibly injured. Note to self: don’t let Isis wander randomly around Hogwarts.
I pulled my attention back to the duel, and watched my fellow Ravenclaws face each other with their wands up. Hopefully this wouldn’t cause a massive argument in the common room this evening!

Well done! Round 3 starts now!

Edith groaned as another Tallentalegra hit her. She tried to shoot an Expelliarmus at Elowin, but, as you may guess, that is pretty hard to do when dancing uncontrollably. Her hopes might have been draining away, but Edith kept up a face of courage. At least I won't finish this duel giving up or anything. I'll fight to the end. Were the words she told herself., Trying to clear her brain to think, Edith wondered whether Elowin would really use Tallentalegra again. Was it her only spell she had learned so far? Edith wondered, because it was stranger, in fact, rare to use the same spell twice.

All the same, Edith thought, I might use Expelliarmus again, perhaps I won't miss this time. This way Elowin won't be able to shoot spells at me, at least for a round before she picks it up! But at the same time, Edith wanted something more... reckless. Like Incendio, Edith LOVED playing with fire, (sarcasm, because of a duel with Avery, she didn't really like it now).

Eventually, Edith gathered up her thoughts, and decided what to do. She gave Elowin a hard look, that said, No way you're beating me. I couldn't live with the embarrasment, but already 2 rounds have passed, and so far Edith hadn't shot a SINGLE succesfull spell. Am I just bad at this sort of thing? Well let me try again. so she raised her wand and pointed it directly at Elowin.
