One might have thought Livia a bit foolish to have acted on the desires of a child. Flashing lights and sparks of colour had, perhaps, blinded her judgement; however, a logician she remained, and truly, lightning had not been an atrocious option. For the girl who had found herself so enamoured by storms, the choice came naturally; her lips curved upwards into the tiniest, slightly-mesmerised smile, as she incanted, 'Meteolojinx.'
Violence's well-intentioned concern, though, did not slip past Livia's observant aural edifices. 'Thank you for your concern,' she said, her voice warm and well-measured now that she had caught her breath. 'And you, although it appears you merely misfired a Knockback Jinx, I know it is not necessarily a wonderful experience. I do hope it was not too terrible.'
Although kindness for its own sake was rarely Livia’s first motivation, and, to augment that truth, she rarely understood the actions or emotions of others, she could easily recall the shameful Knockback Jinx that had led her to accompany Cecilia and Violence in this duel in the first place. The reclamation of Livia’s honour remained the primary focus of her intent for victory, but, of course, as this was a friendly duel, she imagined it to be quite impolite not to ask after the well-being of the older duellist – even if, as in all duels, the endgame was annihilation.
An emotionally-blank glance cast towards Cecilia was the only outward indication of Livia’s deep-seated desire. As the two maintained an amicable relationship – centred around sports, no less – so could Livia not allow herself utter embarrassment in the periphery of one whose opinion she gave weight. She allowed a small glance, but not a wavering of the smile she now wished would remain on her lips – her uncertainty would not show through her well-sculpted façade, she decided. She would be marble, stishovite – near impossible to break, nothing like clay or limestone.
But her concern now lay in the fact that if a branch did not bend, it would break. Brittleness lurked about every corner, even within the wand in her hand, and as she tightened her grip about the stick in between her fingers, she could almost imagine the bones beneath her skin – brittle. As of now, overlain by the branching lichtenberg figures of lightning, a reminder of the enduring fragility of the tightrope between life and death.

XX𝕿he Knockback Jinx misfiring made Violence be pushed back by an invisible force. She was almost about to fall but managed to stay on her feet. Her falling down would be embarrassing. She made a hissing sound as she felt the blow to her stomach, breathing heavily as she composed herself. Patting down on her pants, now feeling a little hot. She regretted her decision of wearing a hoodie but who might have thought that it would get this hot in November? Maybe it was just the adrenalin but Violence could feel herself starting to sweat.
She gave Livia a little smile as she asked about her health, "Eh, could have been worse." Violence had been the first to check up on Livia during the duel, and it would have made sense if Livia expressed her concern just to sound polite, Violence still appreciated her concern. Especially since the duel was turning out to be quite embarassing for reasons Cecilia and Liva both would not understand. She did not mind failing in front of her peers, she was a student, still learning. But to face her father with the news that she had taken part in a duel and failed? That made Violence's stomach churn, giving her more of a blow than her misfired Flipendo.
She decided she would still give it her best, trying was what mattered, not the result. It might have been wishful thinking, but it was what kept Violence from not losing her calm. Thinking so, she raised her wand, yet again. Hopefully, she would have better luck this time.

Wands were raised once more and the incantation of the knockback jinx echoed throughout the room. Merlin’s beard, Cecilia thought as she furrowed her brows. Words could not express how much she loathed that spell, even though it bore no fruit for either witch. Fortunately, she did not have to watch anyone flying across the room. Unfortunately, that meant the state of the duel remained unchanged. Violence was nimble enough to dodge Livia’s spell, but also seemed to miss her target at the same time.
It wasn’t that they were an untalented pair, but that they seemed to be a formidable opponent for each other. Livia was rather impressive for holding her ground against an older witch, whilst Violence was equally impressive to still be standing against a duellist.
Just when it seemed as though no progress would be made, a white light flashed before Cecilia’s eyes. Lightning cracked like a whip and the bolt struck Violence before vanishing as suddenly as it had appeared. Cecilia winced, unable to imagine how painful that must have been. Her expression then relaxed upon noticing that the older witch still stood.
Cecilia tilted her head slightly, gaze drifting over each witch as they prepared their next move. Escorting one of them to the hospital wing almost seemed inevitable now, but it seemed unclear as to who it would be.
All she could offer was a firm reminder.
“Stay focused.”

Duality remained a silent, but unarguably beneficial, observer in the girls' duel. Lightning – bright against dark, chiaroscuro, jarring, stunning – flashed, thunder rumbled, and Livia glanced upwards at the cloud above Violence's head, contented. Placated, like a cat lazily batting at string. Harmful. Beautiful. Laying in wait with bated breath.
The second year, for her own part, appeared to fare well enough, considering her self-induced knockback. This proved an opportunity for Livia to attempt her own flipendo at Violence. The magic channelled as was proper – something Livia opined she must have been quite well-favoured for the occurrence of, considering how shaken she was from the earlier lightning. As powerful as the spell felt, though, Livia's aim was not nearly as stellar. She stared ahead of her as Violence, who had attempted the same spell, moved out of the way. What a waste of marvellous magical efforts... but, on the sunnier side of things, Livia, too, had been able to nimbly dodge.
Then: fizz. crackle. boom. The charge of electricity hung in the air, the scent of ozone permeating the piste once more. Livia inhaled, exhaled, smiled. Sizzling, iridescent lightning flashed once more, and Livia showed teeth. The sight was beautiful, delicate, forceful, as it crashed down upon Violence. Nature abides by rules. It is the nature of lightning to strike.
Still, though, even nature's most exquisite incandescent inclination could burn.
Hesitation clouded Livia's judgement momentarily, but she then recalled this was a friendly duel – yes, a showcase of magical prowess, but not one that would see either girl to an untimely death. Her voice was low but soft as she attempted to meet Violence's gaze. 'Lightning is not the most pleasant, but you are alright, no?' The emotionally-stunted youth would even try to crack a small smile. 'I suppose we might reminisce of this in the hospital wing.'

XX𝕿he spell had missed. Again. Violence could not believe it. How could she be so bad at this? She had missed what three? four? spells in a row? The witch sighed. Thankfully she had moved out of Livia's way just in time so she wasn't hurt either. But her head had started spinning now. She could feel her limbs giving up. 'No. No! I have to do this. Finish this and then I get out of here.' she told herself, as she forced herself to stand up straighter. Just as she did, the raincloud above Violence's head sparked and a ray of lightning hit Violence.
A gasp left the young eagle's mouth as she fell on her knees. Her eyes closed shut as she tried to gather herself. It hadn't been an extremely song ray of lightning but it was lightning. And that hurt. A voice rang out from somewhere, was it Cecilia? was it Livia? She raised her hand to form a thumbs up, "All good. I'm fine!" Her voice was barely a mumble, but Livia and Cecilia could understand. Hopefully. "Yeah, the Hospital Wing sounds lovely right now." After about five minutes, she got up, taking in a huge breath and letting it out with a sigh.
"Livia, I must say, you are a very talented witch." She smiled, there was no shame in admitting that her opponent was better than her. Violence just needed to practice, her spells just needed refining. She would get a hang of this, she promised herself as she raised her wand to cast again. Whatever the situation may be, Violence would not go down without trying.
