Althea simply could not go anywhere without being accosted by someone in her way. Livia watched the red-haired wonder that was Cecilia zoom in front of Althea, and she forced herself to keep a straight face, even if the Wonderbolts' determination to harass the other Seeker was mildly entertaining.

...was once again ignored. Livia eyed it suspiciously for a moment, wondering if it had something gross on it, before deciding her attention would be better utilised elsewhere.
The Snitch.
The Snitch's earlier acrobatic endeavours were serving it quite well now. It zoomed in diagonals, in loop-de-loops, even going around one of the beater's brooms all as Elena and Althea chased after it... to no avail. The fluttering fugitive would certainly had laughed in glee if it had owned a mouth. Elena reached, and she hardly came close. Althea, with her course off-set by Cecilia's silhouette, had far less luck. The Snitch would live another day.

Beaters.
The modus operandi of the game appeared to be, 'get in the other team's way!' This was the case with the Snitch, obviously, but Livia watched with wide eyes as Rosaline purposefully put herself near Althea. She seemed to have no sense of self-preservation, given that Seekers were likely to be targeted. This proved true when Sabrina launched a carefully-aimed bludger towards Althea, which Rosaline took the hit from. The sight made Livia pleased she was a duellist and not a Quidditch player; certainly, no duellist would ever throw themselves in front of their teammate! (...@Hanako Tone?)
Avery, for her own part, thought to minimise Cecilia's streak of luck once and for all. Unfortunately, Fortuna had other plans. The shot went wide, and Cecilia nimbly swerved away.

With the Quaffle left on its own, those who guarded the hoops from the Quaffle had other things to do. While Verity remained stuck on a penalty lap, Maisie was able to take action, and she zoomed towards Elena. True to form, her precision was on point, and she neatly sent Elena tumbling from her broom. 'Gemmell, penalty!' If Livia had been less reserved, she might have commented on the fine technique.
Luckily for Elena, Zephyr was waiting, scanning the skies for any falling teammates. He would catch her on his broom.
Meanwhile, Charlotte had taken advantage of the chaos to successfully return Graci to her broom.

This was a bad idea; she could feel it in her bones. But no one seemed to be going for the quaffle at all, leaving to be totally, completely useless despite the fact that the score seemed unmoving and remained close. She had to do something, but there wasn't realistically a lot she could do. She couldn't catch the snitch for Althea—and she didn't particularly want to try—and she had no bat to defend her. There was only one thing she did have: a broom.
Her brown eyes shifted to the handle. It hadn't let her down so far, and it had been nice and easy to maneuver. Surely, that would be useful. And that's when she spied Elena, her wonderful prefect, flying about the pitch, searching.
She swallowed. Yep, a very bad idea it was indeed. But she didn't know if there was a better one. After all, Cecilia had just flown in front of Althea, disturbing her catch attempt. And Rosaline had just been pummelled after trying to defend the seeker. So, she gripped the broom well and leaned forward, leaving her precious hoops behind.
In truth, it was surprising Elena didn't seem to have seen her coming. Maisie tried to knock against her at least twice, pulling back each time, before connecting. She didn't want to hurt her. She didn't want to have someone as kind and gentle as Elena hate her the way Alyss had done all because of a few seconds in a game.
But she fell, and all Maisie could do in the moment was watch as a horrible feeling curled up in her stomach like a cat. "I'm sorry!" she called out as her voice trailed out, seemingly caught on the clouds. The seconds seemed to stretch out until the moment a teammate caught her. Maisie's team might not be happy with that outcome—getting her out of the game would have been better for their chances—but Maisie was was glad she hadn't fallen on the ground, complete with a set of broken bones.
But as she made her way back towards the hoops, there was one thing she knew: she'd have to knit Elena a blanket this time. A scarf wasn't big enough for an apology.

Frederick’s eyes stayed fixed on the match. By now, he wished he could be flying and following the plays more closely. In truth, what he really wanted was to be playing, but that was fine. He paced back and forth, eyes never leaving the game, trying to shake off the restlessness of being unable to do anything.
Alert, when he saw the red-haired girl’s move against Althea, he felt like swearing. Outraged, he waved in the direction of both players and then toward the referee as well, who, only now, he noticed with some surprise, seemed like a familiar face. “Hey, that’s a foul! That’s clearly a foul!” And so focused was he on calling out the infraction against his team’s Seeker that Frederick completely forgot to cheer for her. Not that cheering would make her catch the Snitch, but having support never hurt a player’s morale.
A moment later, somewhat relieved to see that the opposing team’s Seeker hadn’t succeeded either, he finally settled down and watched the rest of the plays in silence. More often than not, Fred couldn’t keep track of everything, too much happened too fast and all at once, but he did catch the moment when Maisie was directed to make a lap around the pitch after taking an opponent out of the play. This time, Frederick stayed quiet, celebrating silently to himself.

Vera grinned and returned the high five from Cecilia, though she was close to missing it entirely. "Go raise some hell, Merrick," she said, then set off on her penalty lap.
This was starting to become a nuisance. Constantly getting caught and wasting a round doing nothing productive for her team. Even if she was practically swapping out with Cecilia every time she was on penalty and Vera wasn't, it always meant one less person to grab the quaffles, assist the seeker, or save any of her falling teammates. Not that there were many, but there was always a first time for everything.
Well, there was nothing to do except watch while on penalty, so Vera turned her eyes to the field, occasionally looking over to make sure she wouldn't become splatter on the pitch walls. She watched as Elena reached out again. "C'mon, c'mon..." Vera whispered to herself.
Then, "Sh...!" She bit back a curse as Maisie collided with Elena, sending their team's seeker plummeting. It wasn't until her teammate, Zephyr, caught Elena before she could hit the ground and Maisie got her penalty lap that Vera breathed.
Maisie had been a thorn in their side while scoring quaffles, and even moreso now that she was away from the goal posts. But with the opposing keeper on penalty, it gave the team room to breathe.
Vera sighed, hearing another call for Cecilia's penalty, signalling the end of Vera's own. She steered her broom to the centre of the pitch and took off.
"This ought to end soon."

Bootleg Quidditch

Retirement was imminent. Growing up with her father and godfather, who were, allegedly, "the stars of their Quidditch team" in their schooling days at Hogwarts, Althea knew how intense people got over sports: Hollering, jumping, and all the other things people did that seemed questionably unsportsmanlike. However, after she had participated in her informal race, and now that she was in this Quidditch match, Althea already felt like writing her letter of resignation from sports from now on, because if the spectators of players had been bad, the players themselves were even worse! Getting snitch-blocked by Verity Engels the first time had already thrown the Hufflepuff off immensely. Her eyes had spent minutes trying to trace back the snitch that was speeding around the pitch, and just as she saw a glimpse of still gold, Althea dived down to get closer, only to have a figure dart in her line of sight. That flash of bright auburn... She mentally groaned. Cecelia Merrick had been in her informal racing team, and above all, her determination was commendable. She could almost feel respect for the effort to stop her, if that weren't drowned out by her satisfaction at hearing her get caught for the foul.
The snitch was buzzing, bouncing in the air before her, taunting. Still distracted about getting blocked by an ex-teammate, Althea's dive for the snitch was unsteady, and her hand almost slipped as she closed the gap. Before her hand could even open to catch it, the snitch threw itself in the opposite direction. She grumbled, shaking her hand out to readjust her grip. This better be the last time. She needed a nap.

Avery missed it again. Of all the times for her head to get out of the game, this was the worst time. She had to focus. Her team was depending on her. The game wasn't much longer from the ending. She just had to push through, but for how long, that still was unknown. "Come on team! Keep it up! Not much longer!" Avery called out to her team. Hoping the motivation would be enough to urge them to keep going.
There was only one thing left to do. That was to get the snitch, and, of course neither her team nor the other were making it easy. Fouls were called back and forth by the moderator, Livia. "Wow. What a game." Avery mumbled to herself. She had never played in a Quidditch game with the amount of penalty laps as the one she was currently in. It was as if the two teams were desperate enough to do anything even play fouls if it meant the other team didn't get the snitch and win the game.
Time was running out. A decision had to be made quickly. Avery knew what she had to do, but would this be the end of the game? Would Althea finally be able to catch the snitch? Or will everything her and her team worked so hard to accomplish be lost? There was only one way to find out.

Bootleg Quidditch

by althea valeden
Having little practical Quidditch experience, Geneva wasn’t sure how long a typical match lasted. But from her readings on the subject, she knew that it was possible for a match to last for days- even weeks- if the snitch wasn’t caught. She rather hoped that didn’t happen with this one.
However, she wasn’t too worried. Although it hadn’t been a particularly high-scoring game, the players seemed to be tiring somewhat. Hopefully before long the snitch would be caught, and she could stop feeling like a fish out of water.
The truth was that although this game had been an enlightening experience, she was more than ready to have her feet back on the ground. It was evident that agility on the dance floor did not necessarily translate to the Quidditch pitch. Still, she was determined to do her part as long as the game lasted.
She scanned the pitch, searching for falling players. Suddenly, she saw a student plummeting towards the ground. She raced forward to catch her, but soon realized that the girl wasn’t one of her teammates. Still, it seemed too cold to just let her fall. Thankfully, while Geneva was caught in her moral dilemma, a player from the other team caught the fallen.
Glancing around to see what had caused the fall, she noticed Maisie looking especially guilty. The foul was confirmed by the call of “Gemmel, penalty!” from Livia. Usually Geneva didn’t care too much about rules or breaking them, but this did seem a particularly risky thing to try. Still, she supposed that access to magical healing gave people a bit more daring.
It was at this point in her internal ramblings that Geneva noticed the Quaffle. No one on either side seemed interested with it, which was odd. Maybe this was her chance to make a move. Well, no time like the present.

Fortunately for both Charlotte and Graci, the broom sharing situation was not a long term solution. Moreover, there was a pocket of inactivity for the both of them where she was somewhat able to get back on her broom. Well, now I can check off almost falling off a broom while getting on another one off my bucketlist. Not that it was on in the first place.
Looking out at the pitch, Graci realized just how large it was. How does anyone get anything done... you could go quite a few minutes with no one within many meters around you. If this wasn't a targeting game, of course. Some of her hair beat against her face, the wind and cold swiftly seeping through to what felt like her bones. Sure, she was used to the cold, but warmer days always put a smile on her face. Than again, making bludgers careen towards perfectly kind people would have been a downer either way.
Time for my brain to get back in the game, I suppose. With a suppressed sigh, she scanned the pitch, taking in everything the way she would when Dutch blitz got a little too chaotic. Just imagine it as a board or card game. Sure.-> word count: 207

Zephyr almost didn’t register the call before everything around him went wrong at once. He’s been watching Elena’s chase on the snitch, of how close she got to it despite luck continue refusing to line up for her. It was frustrating to watch, but her determination was also admirable. It didn’t matter what obstacle was thrown her way, she didn’t slow down or hesitate at all.
But then, Maisie had to intervene...
He felt gutted the moment he saw what happened, then everything else faded. He could only see Elena falling and the thought that she could hit the ground if no one reached her in time was the only thing in his mind. He didn’t think, his body just moved on their own accord. “Elena!!!” (@Elena Clark)He leaned forward to give himself a good start, just the way he had practiced alone many times. He adjusted his angle without really knowing how, just judging speed and distance by instinct more than skill. Too fast. She’s falling too fast. All those mornings on the pitch, all that practice he did, all that watching and waiting, it all just clicked into place. He dove down so fast the drizzle blurred his vision but he kept his eyes locked on her falling form.
Don’t panic… you can do this!
His heart was pounding so loud he could hear it in his ears. He stretched one hand out, then both, bracing himself as their distance closed. For just a split second, he was sure he was going to miss her, yet he didn’t. Luck was on his side, he caught her just in time. The impact rattled him, arms straining, and it nearly knocked him sideways as he fought to keep them both steady. The broom dipped and shook dangerously then it steadied as he forced it level with everything he had. “I’ve got you,” he realized his voice was shaky. “Are you okay? You’re not hurt anywhere, are you?” He guided her until Elena was stable enough to regain her balance properly, they were sharing a broom now. His heart needed a moment as it was still hammering so loudly he could barely hear the crowd at this point. He adjusted his balance and noticed how tense his arms were, and how his legs were shaking from the effort, but he forced himself to stay calm. Falling was not an option.
Around them, the game continue to move forward. Someone was being called for a penalty lap and another one had taken a brutal hit and was still flying. Graci and Charlotte were finally back on separate brooms. His teammates were bruised, tired, scattered, but still fighting. Even in the middle of penalties and missed chances, they were still backing each other up and that's the most important thing.
Who said quidditch is for the faint-hearted? It's not and never will be! He stayed alert, already scanning the skies again.

Charlotte took a breath as she watched everything happen from above. The moment before had been chaotic with things happening left and right, so she'd taken the opportunity to return Graci to her broom. They were no longer sharing a broom now, so Charlotte decided to take the moment to rest. She watched as Elena was knocked off her broom from Maisie's bludger and Zephyr caught her. Wow, that's good he caught her. Like Graci and Charlotte a few moments before, they were now sharing a broom. Who knew sharing a broom happened so often? Did people fall out of brooms a lot? Charlotte thought falling off a broom was rare. Still, it did make sense with all the bludgers being whacked around the field.
Speaking of bludgers. . . Charlotte had dodged a couple of bludgers, and she was paranoid one might sneak up behind her and knock her off her broom. She was here to play quidditch, not fall off her broom. I mean, I guess that's part of the game. She was actually somewhat good at dodging bludgers. Which was surprising since it was her first ever quidditch match. So she kept her guard up as she watched her teammates, so she wouldn't be the next to fall off their broom. She hoped she would be able to help her team catch up as she watched them. Well you can't help if you're just staring. Charlotte took a breath and flew down to help her teammates.
