In a Quiet Corner on a Loud Night (pv Hunter Nightshade)

It was the night of the Sorting Ceremony. The new first-years had just arrived and were in the Small Hall awaiting the doors of the Great Hall opening with various emotions. Some had already formed tentative friend-groups while on the train or perhaps knew one another prior, others were mingling with the barely veiled impatience of anticipation. Despite his excitement, the sheltered boy began feeling slightly overwhelmed by the crowd of other first-year students and let himself fall back to the back of the group to the edges of the room as more of an observer than a participant - however - it appeared that he wasn't the only one who had had a similar idea.

When he reached a quiet corner of the Small Hall, he found it already occupied by a solitary occupant - a young witch with long black hair save for a shock of white bangs which he found surprisingly comforting, only surprising such that this was only the second person he had ever met with such a feature besides none other than his own mother who had a similar feature... he wondered if they were related, perhaps a distant cousin he had not met, but he thought he knew all his cousins especially those who were or would be attending Hogwarts. So no, not a cousin, but ... he definitely shouldn't be staring, that would be rude, so as quickly as he could snap out of his own head, he gave her a soft smile, not wanting to come across too strongly, after all, if she were here it was likely for the same reason as he was, to escape the exuberant crowd of their fellow students.

Therefore, the only thing he mustered was the aforementioned soft smile and a friendly, "Hello"

The night of the sorting ceremony seemed to surreal to me. In my head i still thought that there was no way that all this is real. The fire flickered along the large, strong stone walls. Statues and engravings that seemed almost too real. All of what I see before me, i have only heard about it in stories. I heard a couple of students talk about dragons, and many more creatures that I thought only existed in fantasies and fairytales.

Many of the first years started forming groups. Some eager, some nervous, and some confident. They were talking about their house choices. Some wanted Gryffindor because everyone in their family was one. Some wanted hufflepuff. Others thought they a were a fit for ravenclaw as they were quite smart. Others wanted slytherin. The house of the cunning, the ambitious and the resourceful one. Personally, from what I have heard i would prefer Gryffindor, but any other house would also be fine.

I stood at the back hiding in a quite corner, blending into the shadows. Many didnt notice me, but perhaps I hadn't blended in that as I met eyes with a boy with dark brown hair and kind eyes. He seemed to be thinking about something. My thoughts instantly went to my white bangs. I was about to turn away when he gave me a soft smile.

"Hello," he said.

"Hi," I said.

"Whats your name? My name is Edward Bishop," he said.

"Hunter Nightshade," I replied.

Edward smiles softly, he didn’t want to interrupt her respite from the crowd though since he had thought the same thing. Nonetheless, like any of the others he was somewhat nervous of the coming Sorting in the Great Hall; would he be sorted in Slytherin like his father? His cousins too. Ravenclaw like his mother? He was smart and loved studying and that would have made his mother proud. Hufflepuff like his grandmother? He wouldn’t mind to be in Hufflepuff from what he in A History of Hogwarts it was close to the kitchens with easy access to plenty of snacks. Probably would never be Gryffindor like his Grandfather, he was far too quiet and shy and unathletic for that - his grandfather had been a bold athlete in his youth, he was somewhat jealous to have not inherited those talents but perhaps he has other talents as well, he just hoped that he would learn them sooner rather than later;

Getting out of his own head after a moment he speaks up again to his new acquaintance, “Nice to meet you, Hunter Nightshade; I’m from Canterbury, how about you?” he asks politely; then adding more curiously, “what House are you hoping to be sorted into?”

I give him a small smile.

"Its nice to meet you too, Edward Bishop; I'm from London."

"what House are you hoping to be sorted into?" he asks curiously.

"From what I've heard from the others, Gryffindor would be my choice. I do have some of Its qualities if i do say so myself," i reply. "What about you, Edward?"

"I'd prefer Hufflepuff, my grandmother was one, and a plus bonus its the closest to the kitchens," he says with a hint of mischief in his voice. I smile at that.

The noise around us suddenly died down. I looked up to the top of the staircase to find the professor waiting. She instructed us to follow her into the Great hall. The huge decorated doors of the great hall swung open, revealing hundreds of floating candles and a magical sky. All the other students stared at us as we walked the length of the hall. At the podium at the end, sat all the professors and headmaster at the center. In the middle of the platform sat a stool with a wonky looking hat, with...a face?

"why does the hat look like it has a face?" i think to myself.

The headmaster Introduced himself as Solomon Lear. He gave a speech welcoming the new students to Hogwarts, and the old ones back. He instructed us that when he calls out our name, we are sit on the stool, and he'll place the hat on our head so that we'll be sorted into our houses. One by one students went by. Some were in Ravenclaw, some in Slytherin. For many it was instant. For some the hat analyzed every fiber of their being.

"Edward Bishop!" All eyes had turned to him.

"Good luck," i whispered. He gave me a thanking smile, and went up to the stool.

After the Feast, after exiting the Great Hall, Edward hangs back, letting the crowd of students pass him as he hangs back in the Small Hall. He was now a fully-fledged member of Hufflepuff House. While he was happy with that, he realized that meant he wouldn't see some of the new friends he had already made in other houses very often. He would have to go out of his way more if he wanted to maintain those friendships. He could do that, as it was important to maintain relationships, and it never hurts to have too many friends.

And so, with those thoughts on his mind, he watched the other houses filing out of the Great Hall, trying to make mental notes so he would recognize more of the other students when they passed in the halls or perhaps in classes that he had together with other houses.

Eventually, he saw some familiar faces. Those who passed by he recognized he would smile and wave to. Most didn't stop to chat, they were too excited perhaps to be heading to their own new dorms and make new friends amongst their housemates, however, at least one did. Edward smiled when the young witch, now sporting Gryffindor colors as she had hoped, exited the hall and walked over to the quiet corner that they had shared hours earlier.

Finally, the feast ended. The prefects started telling the first years to follow them back to their dormitories, but it quickly erupted into chaos. Friends from before the holidays caught up in giggles and conversation as they competed for airtime, while worried first years shouted out questions at random. I lingered at the edge of everything, watching as pairs of older kids from my house discussed matches and fighting tournaments, while others whispered nervously among each other about something called O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s.

Shortly, the smaller hall was packed with students flowing in and out of the staircases, all of whom belonged to their respective houses. I made my way towards the small corner where I had last seen Edward, hoping against hope that he might be there. Turning towards the sea of yellow, I spotted him in an instant, standing among the crowd, gazing straight at me with a warm smile.

‘We're officially Hogwarts students. This is unbelievable!’ I exclaimed, and he walked towards me. We made small talk before i said,

“I should probably catch up with everyone else,” I said. “It was really nice meeting you, Edward. Good night,” I said as we parted ways.
