Alex entered the Study Room with his bag on his right shoulder, with the thought of conquering the Wizarding World with his knowledge. But his dreams were gone when he looked around the Study Room. The room was filled with students holding books that were twice or even three times their body size. Everyone was writing something, whether it was an assignment, homework, or something else. Alex took his bag, kept it on one of the tables on the right end, and pulled out his books.
He hadn't done any of the homework because he was too busy exploring the castle and making friends. He had met quite a few people whom he liked a lot. His dorm was perfect, and his classes were going well. He was enjoying his classes, especially charms and defense against the dark arts. He pulled out his book, parchment, ink, and quill to do his homework for the first time in his time at Hogwarts. He started with subjects he liked, like charms and defense against the dark arts, but he soon stumbled upon the history of magic, astronomy, and potions. Three of the subjects, he hated.
Alex never liked these subjects because he never really understood them. During the time he was doing his homework on the history of magic, he thought to himself,"Why am I even doing this? It's all history!! It's not like I am living those moments again." His eyes then fell on the book of potions, and he continued thinking,"Great!! Another subject where I don't understand what needs to be done. It's mixing random ingredients!! Nothing else!! Yet it is so difficult."
Alex was barely able to do anything on his homework, but somehow managed to do it. He was in desperate need of someone who could help him out. At his home, his mother and father used to help him, but he didn't even have them right now to help him cross these complex subjects. Alex's expectation of this being enjoyable was getting shattered by the amount of homework and the complexity of the subjects.

To say Taliesin was a little disappointed when she walked into the Study Room was an understatement. She'd hoped that she'd have had better luck than when she'd peaked into the Library earlier that maybe the Study Room would be less crowded, but she never had been a very lucky girl. It seemed everyone was having the same idea today to settle in with their assignments and try to get ahead of the homework load.
With a small sigh through her nose, she shuffled in, glancing about to see if she could find any free tables. This always felt like the hardest part of being a First Year. Being the youngest, everything and everyone was still so new. Friendship hadn't been forged quite yet, all the older kids still felt so much bigger and smarter and more intimidating because they were already use to everything... and Taliesin couldn't deny, she wasn't the most well equipped when it came to engaging with others her own age.
She chewed her cheek a little before decided to press on towards one of the tables that was less full with only one other person sitting there. He looked like he might've been in her year, though she wasn't sure she could place his face from her classes. There were, after all, and awful lot of people to try to keep track of, "Hey," she called, trying to shove down any spilling nerves from her voice, "Can um... may I sit here?" she asked, gesturing towards one of the empty seats.

Alex looked up from his potions homework, already exhausted and mentally ready to quit Hogwarts. He was on the verge of burning his potion book and notes. He knew it was important for his career as an Auror, but he couldn't handle and understand these complex ingredients and how to get them, or what the process of making a potion was. It was just too specific for Alex. Alex shot up at the sound of a girl's voice. There was a girl with red curly hair. While Alex desperately wanted to be left alone, he thought a little company won't be any harm.
He said politely,"Yeah, sure.. I am Alex. " While Alex thought it wasn't the most brilliant idea to sit next to a girl, he also knew he was terrible in short talks. So far, Alex might have had the deepest talks. He doesn't talk about random things; instead, he is more into understanding people. Alex grunted on another question on potions and mummered to himself,"Why does it even matter where the ingredient is from? I can just buy it for a couple of galleons.. Ugh!! I hate potions." Alex, at this point, desperately needed help, both for his homework and his mental health.
Alex was now having internal conflicts between his urge to ask the girl for help and his stupid pride that he can figure this out himself. While he didn't want to come up as an Idiot infornt of a girl, he also didn't want to fail his homework. Finally, he decided that failing his homework would be more dangerous and asked her politely,"Hey!! I am really stuck with this potions homework. Would you mind helping me out?" Suddenly, the thought of her being older than him struck, and he immediately realised that his reputation was about to tank. But, she looked around his year, so he ignored this thought and moved forward, hoping he made the right decision.

"Taliesin Annwyn." she introduced herself, offering a small smile as she set her things down, "Pleasure to meet you."
The snake smoothed a bit of her hair out of her face before mentally running through her game plan as she filed through her bag. Honestly, it ought to be a criminal offense to already have this much homework so early in the year. Regardless, she neatly stacked her books and notes, trying to stay aware of how much space she was taking up. Since coming to school, having to actually share space with other people for the first time, Taliesin had realized how much space she tended to unconsciously occupy; requiring more diligence on her part to make sure she didn't encroach on others around her.
Absentmindedly, she began flipping through her Herbology textbooks and scribbling down her notes for the homework. For a moment, she'd nearly forgotten there was another person at the table until he spoke up for her attention, "Hm?" he wanted her help? Bright eyes flickered around them for a moment, thinking that maybe she was mistaken and he was talking to someone else. A silly notion really given he was looking directly at her, "Y-yeah. Sure. I'm pretty good at potions."
Potions was one of her best and favorite subjects, "What are you stuck on exactly?" she asked, leaning forward a bit to try to see if she could figure out where he was exactly in the textbook.

Alex was delighted by the tone Taliesin had. He wasn't sure, but as far as he could figure it out, it wasn't judgmental at all. Alex's biggest fear was proven wrong. He thought that asking for help might make him come across as stupid and incompetent, but turns out it wasn't true. He was glad for this fact. This name, Taliesin Annwyn, was a bit new for Alex as he hadn't such names before, but he didn't judge; instead move forward with what he needed. She seemed as stressed as Alex was, which made him relaxed about the fact that he wasn't the only one who was struggling.
To Alex's purest shock, Taliesin liked potions. How could someone like potions? Alex didn't mean to be rude or judge her, but he wasn't strong enough not to do so. His immediate thought was how someone could pour random ingredients and wave a wand without the proper logic of what's actually happening. Alex said to Taliesin in the calmest and most polite tone he could manage in the state of shock, "Umm... You like potions? But why?" The 'why' part just blurted out. Alex quickly said, "I mean... It's not exactly fun and like.... I will be honest with you. Why do I need to read where to find ingredients?? I can just buy it and keep it with me in a bag. And what's up with all that mixing and everything??" All this came out of his mouth even before he could realise what he said.
His cheeks turned bright red in embarrassment as he realised what he had blurted out. Fortunately, there was no teacher around, or else he would have gotten a detention for sure by now. His mind raced through all the judgmental thoughts Taliesin must be having. He just wanted help from her, and now he just blurted out why he hated the subject. Just in a try to recover from the damage, Alex said in a small voice, "Umm.. I am sorry, I didn't mean it like that.. I just don't like potions too much. Can you explain this?" Alex said, sliding his potions book where he underlined a few lines about bezoar.

Taliesin blinked, a little surprised by such sudden questioning. Not that it wasn't something she hadn't heard before, or even thought herself at one time. She could still remember being small, standing on a stepstool on her tiptoes watching Nanny Morgan making potions for the household, and not understand the logic behind the process. Every bit of preparation, the order things were put in and the amounts, none of it seemed to have a rhyme or reason to it. Though as she got older and learned more, everything fell into place for her understanding.
For all her clumsiness, impatience and scatterbrainedness, potion making actually made sense to her. She enjoyed the tediousness of the process of it all. Though she could certainly understand why it didn't appeal to everyone.
She offered him a small smile, "Then I certainly don't recommend becoming a Potions Master when you grow up." she said with a small chuckle, hardly offended, "I like potions because to me, it make sense. There's not a single step in the process that doesn't have a reason for it, even if you don't realize it in the beginning. Nothing about potion making is random, its a very precise thing." she explained before pulling his book closer to her to better see what the problem was, "When it comes to finding ingredients, sure you can just buy whatever you need, but then you have to store it appropriately. Why buy quality ingredients if you have the ability to just grow them or get them yourself? That's what my Nanny does. Most of our greenhouse is mostly just to keep stock for common potion ingredients. But there's something things you'd have a hard time finding in a shop, much less affording it. Sometimes its easier to just go on the adventure to find what you're looking for." she mused while simultaneously skimming over the passage in the book.
"So Bezoar is something you'd have to buy because it comes from goat's stomach. But its very important because used to cure common poisons, which is why its used in the Antidote for Common Poisons potion. If you left it out, either your potion wouldn't do anything at all, or you might just kill whoever you were trying to save. You can't substitute it for anything else. And you can't use it as an addition or substitute in the Cure for Uncommon Poisons potion because then the potion would be completely ineffective to whatever you're trying to cure." she explained casually.
"Everything that gets put into potions has a specific job. Some ingredients can be used in both harmful or helpful potions, but the ratio you use is what determines how the potion will take effect." she explained, perhaps now creeping into the territory of rambling, but she hadn't quite noticed that, "For example, Bubotuber Pus in its pure form can cause painful boils and spells horrific, right? But its also a vital ingredient to in Bruise Removal Paste because it has fantastic disinfectant and tissue repair abilities once its been diluted in the potion making process. Everything in potion making has a method behind the madness."
