Whispers of your Wand Unofficial Duel

Tatiana entered the duelling room full of adrenaline; for this was her first ever duel ever — well, unofficial duel, but it still counted anyways. She'd been dreading and dreaming of this match since altogether. Being vaguely invited by a fellow duellist from the year above her doesn't really help with nerves — at all. But all the same, she gathered up her courage and made her way to the fourth floor; where Amelia was already waiting.

During the trip there, she walked through her head on what could possibly happen; but all came to one dreadful conclusion she was so sure that she'd lose. Never much of the optimistic girl, it wasn't exactly hard to pin-point this conclusion for her, in fact, she always dreaded the worst every other day; so today was no different.

During Amelia's short speech, Tatiana suddenly felt much more attentive than usual; maybe it was because of the nerves, or the fact that her ego was way too high and fragile to be broken by some stranger she doubted she'd ever crossed the hallways with — mainly because she was too narcissistic to admit it. Trying hard to swallow her pride, she tried so bad to cling onto their moderator's words; trying to find some loophole or just anything that could help her escape this tragedy any sooner. But, after all of this, she knew what she had to do.

She had to swallow her pride — which was of course pretty much impossible for the insufferably vain eleven year old.

Taking her position across the room, her smug face held high; but in reality, her brain tried straining itself so hard to work its gears, what could she do next to avoid immediate loss?; What if she gets thrown away by some spell that is yet to be added in her spellbook?; Can she use her hands instead? But Amelia said no physical force were to be used at any point of the duel; God this was frustrating; what if she gets injured the first five minutes; Or worse — what if she loses? Anything but that; she begged.

Mikey walked to the duel as if he had an appointment at the dentists. Of course he’d volunteered and signed up. Ravenclaw logic, if you suck at something, the best way to suck less is to do it a lot. And dueling was supposed to be regulated, controlled, and safe. A place where there were rules and limits. A place where spells were supposed to be cast.

But his hands shaking didn’t appear to recognize any difference. His hands were adjusting his wand as if it was slipping out, though it wasn’t really. His palm was a bit sweaty. The air in the room was too clean as if the stone had been cleaned until it squeaked. He made an attempt at breathing regularly and found himself doing that thing where you think about breathing and then forget how.

Across from him stood Tatiana. First year. Small, sharp, and trying very hard to look like she wasn’t scared or nervous as well. Mikey recognized that type of courage, the type you wore like a mask because you had nothing better to wear. Amelia was there, clipboard clutched in her hands, hair tidy, speaking with confidence. Mikey’s stomach did a stupid flip, a reaction that wasn’t nervousness and absolutely everything to do with her. The owlery. Summer letters. Her handwriting. She was his friend. But now it felt like she was his judge and jury.

Mikey raised his wand. It should’ve been easy. It was just a duel. It was just practice. But the moment his wand began to rise, something cold and cutting unfurled in his chest, as if a memory had been lurking in the back of his ribs with its arms crossed. The Wedding. He remembered the ballroom packed with screams, chaotic movement, spells that were not intended to instruct anyone in anything except how quickly things could go bad. He remembered the sound of magic hitting stone, hitting people. He remembered Dylan—hurt bad enough that Mikey wasn’t sure if he would make it out.

Mikey's hand automatically clenched so tightly that his knuckles ached. He didn’t want to hurt Tatiana. He didn’t want to hurt anyone. The scary thing about duelling was that it required you to sort of try. Controlled, he reminded himself. This is controlled. This is nothing like that.

He attempted a small smile, hopefully letting his opponent know this was not too serious and that they should have some fun with it. Mikey’s heart pounded once, hard enough to knock his breath from his throat. Only a spell, he told himself. Just a spell.

Amelia’s blue eyes raised to the two duelists standing in front of her, and she was almost taken aback by their expressions. They seemed confident, calm. Or at least like they were trying to be. Still, with the crumbling of nerves that twisted her stomach in circle, she wondered if she was the most nervous person in the duel. Returning to the memories of her first official duel was not an activity she was keen on, yet Amelia couldn't help be impressed by their behaviour. It didn't look like either of them were planning to freeze up and enter the humiliation that she had. Well, only time would tell for these two.

Wands were soon raised, and after what seemed to the Hufflepuff to be a moment of suspense, the first spell of the duel sprinted through the air. No, first two spells! The first year, Tatiana, offered a knockback jinx that matched the textbook's exact description and Amelia couldn't help feeling a pang of sympathy for Mikey. But Mikey hadn't come unprepared either, and he casted an all-to-accurate disarming charm. Tatiana's wand flew out of her hand and cluttered a metre or two away, leaving her undefended against any following spells.

Amelia clapped her hands together once, before pausing in question once to ensure that there was no favouritism being played. A moment's relief at the realisation that they had both been successful flooded her, and she gave a short applause. "Good job, both of you!" Amelia's voice danced through the air, the nerves inside her evaporating.

An urge to join the two on the piste, join the springing of spells and the evading of oncoming ones, overwhelmed her for a second but she had to remind herself she was moderating. Not dueling. With another deal breath, Amelia prepared herself for the next round.

Mikey stumbled as the spell struck him, the shock of its impact causing him to breathlessly inhale as he struggled to stay on his feet. His boots rang out on the stone as he shifted to balance himself out, his shoulders straining before he finally managed to stay on his feet. The ache began to build in his side as he took a moment to catch his breath.

So yeah. That hurt. He moved his grip on the wand, wiping his hand across the fabric of his sleeve without really even thinking about it. There was Amelia's voice somewhere behind him, steady and encouraging, and that seemed to help in ways he never expected. He looked back at Tatiana again, really looked at her this time. Tatiana was managing all right. Fast on her feet, focused, doing better than he'd expected her to, in all honesty. He gave her some respect for that, at least.

Mikey shifted his position, his feet spreading as he adjusted his weight. There was no use in rushing at this point. That was what got him into trouble in the first place. He already knew what it was like to be careless with a fight. The pain in his ribcage helped him remain anchored in his present moment and forget his unwanted memories. This wasn't chaos. This wasn't fear. This was training. This was controlled. This was limited.

The silence in the room seemed to be even deeper as his eyes focused. He looked at Tatiana and gave her a slight, smile. Not a challenge. Not a joke. Just a simple acknowledgment that they were both still standing. And then he raised his wand again. His breathing slowed. His heart slowed. Whatever came next, he was ready to meet it head on.

Tatiana smiled. This boy was clearly up for a match. He had preformed a flawless disarming charm at the girl, a charm that had caught her off guard. But of course, Tatiana had also offered up a fight and shot him a Knockback jinx, which sent him stumbling in his feet.

Not quite breathless yet, she strategized her next move. Trying to figure out what the boy in front of her was planning to do in the process. Her pride rose as she found that the boy seemed much weaker after the jinx was cast, but the girl had merely just lost her wand; she could possibly have the upper hand in this match after all.

Not wanting to spend much time in useless things, she planned her move strategically, being a first-year had its disadvantages, of course, but maybe, just maybe, she could somehow work her way through it? But how? What would be something that could catch both the boy and thier moderator off guard? Could she even catch them off guard with the little knowledge she knew?

Blazing herself for the next, move, she stood tall and proud in her place as she was beginning to ready up for her next move. Her ego reaching it's peak, so much so that even the slightest disarray could send it flying into pieces.
