All Matilde could hear was two words, replaying themselves in her head. Phelan’s hurt. He's hurt. Attacked. By a bleedin' werewolf. She couldn't believe this had happened. Things like this weren't supposed to happen anymore. She could feel her heart beating, but she couldn't say what she was feeling. She registered her brother gripping her shoulder, leading her through the hospital. Up the stairs to the third floor, nothing but racing thoughts and the beating, beating of her heart.

She was ripped from her trance when she saw the girls. The four of them sat huddled together, Aine on Elodie’s lap, and Nicolette and Cecile held each other tightly.

When Nicolette saw Matilde, she ran to her, and Matilde wrapped her arms around the younger girl instinctively. All she could think was that this girl was like a sister of her own. She couldn't even imagine, if... Matilde wouldn’t finish that thought. She just wouldn’t.

"What have you heard?" Matilde muttered to her softly.

"Not much," Nicolette whispered, the young girl's panic evident in her voice. "No one will tell us a thing."

Matilde pulled back from the hug so she could look Phelan's sister in the eyes. “He's going to be okay,” Matilde said fiercely. She fought the tears beginning to well up, wiping them away before Nico could see. “Have… have you seen him?”

“No. He isn't awake yet.”

"He's going to be okay" she repeated. It was as much to reassure herself as the younger girl.

Matilde couldn't say for sure how much time had passed since they had arrived at the hospital. Time seemed to be moving slower than she thought possible, each second another worry, another what if yet to be answered. The adults spoke anxiously, medi-wizards speaking calmly to Phelan's father who was becoming increasingly agitated. Matilde's parents exchanging a few words or at times a single glance, their odd way of wordless communication that didn't require a touch of magic. Matilde only caught pieces of their conversation.

Maybe hours, maybe minutes later, Matilde's father placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. She snapped her focus to him. “Is he awake? Can I see him?” She asked.

Her father knelt down beside her. "He is awake. But we're going to let his family see him first, alright?" He spoke in a measured whisper, anticipating that Matilde would be less than happy with this arrangement.

Matilde nodded slowly. She had never been a very patient girl, a quality exacerbated in moments of stress. Eventually, Phelan's father opened the door to the boy's room and waved in the O'Fionnagans.

Matilde was suddenly nervous, as it hit her all at once that she had no idea what she would find on the other side. She turned the doorknob, slowly.

He had survived, something for which he was, of course, incredibly grateful. He was lucky, really, that's what everyone was saying.

All his limbs and brain functioning were intact. Well, mostly. He'd hit his head at some point during the attack, which he knew because of the large bump he could feel at the back of his head. And because his memory of the whole ordeal was fuzzy at best.

Phelan's only physical injuries were a sprained wrist and the two marks on his face. He only knew about the wrist after being informed by the healers that it had been mended immediately upon arrival. The scars, he felt. On his skin. In his bones.

Pain had a funny way of being all-consuming. Despite the numerous possible bright sides, Phelan could not ignore what no one was saying.

The cost of survival. This curse and these scars, he would bear for the rest of his life.

The wizard assigned to care for Phelan while he was in the hospital introduced himself as Henri. Phelan liked his kind tone and methodical speech, which was easy for him to understand as a French learner. He didn't sugarcoat Phelan's situation, but managed to give him hope.

"Phelan, your family would like to see you," Henri told him. Phelan appreciated the man's phrasing of the sentiment, as if the boy had a choice whether or not to see them.

Phelan couldn't help but sigh.

"Many sisters," Henri remarked, peaking out the blinds. "The little redhead- is she your girlfriend?" the wizard asked, a slightly mischievous grin on his face.

"Matilde's here?" Phelan said, surprised, then scowled upon registering the rest of the man's sentence. What was it with adults trying to make everything about romantic relationships? They were worse than teenage girls. "No," he said firmly.

Before Henri could ask any more probing questions, the door opened, and Phelan's sisters entered the room in their usual fluttering cloud of chaos, closely followed by their father.

"Phelan!" Aine squealed, jumping up on the bed and hugging him tightly.

"Aine, don't squish him," Nico chided, ever the older sister.

"It's okay," he said, smiling at the littlest.

Phelan's father came to stand beside his son. "How are you feeling?" He asked quietly.

Phelan looked at his father's face, always trying to read behind the man's mask. He saw genuine concern, and underneath, an anger. Not directed at him, necessarily. Phelan decided today was not the day to pick a fight.

"Alright," Phelan said truthfully. He was sure the enormity of the situation would sink in later. The emotions would come. Now, all the numbness left behind was the facts: his life was changing drastically yet again.
