Misty walked away from the lake, trying not to scowl. There were far too many people there for her to relax. The wind was strong, but not cold and Misty knew she would be wandering around for quite a bit more time. She broke into a light jog, traveling further down a short path and though about her family. Why did her parents feel that they could dictate her life at Hogwarts? She had already made an effort to create friendships. She supposed it had gone fine. Her parents had, of course, written about her uncle. She groaned audibly, causing two passing students to stare at her. Misty tucked her head and slowed her pace. She didn't think she would miss her uncle as much as she did. After all, he had only lived with them for a year, and often couldn't even look her in the eye. Still, it felt nice to be able to go to him and just know he understood. They would sit beside each other for hours, reading, writing, or just thinking. It was one of the only times Misty could sit still. They rarely spoke during these times, and Misty knew it worried her parents that she spent so much time with him. They were probably happy that her uncle would never be able to write to her. She pressed her eyes shut, and when she opened them, a girl was walking towards her. The newcomer looked cold and vaguely threatening. Misty decided a quick conversation and even faster exit would be in order.
"Hello, I think I've seen you around before. I'm Misty, sorry I never got your name..." Misty had already started to turn away. When the other girl responded.

Very very seriously. Hufflepuff ?! Brooklyn? It was a nightmare, huh? Wasn't she actually in this house anyway? She was so selfish, arrogant ... She ended up in the Mudblood's house ?! How awful!
She needed to walk, to wash her mind, away. She still couldn't believe it. She had arrived in the house of the loyal, patient, kind, just, tolerant, and above all modest. Merlin! Brooklyn is not modest, by Morgane! She had thought of a Sorting Hat error. It was impossible. He was the most intolerant and intolerant person in the world!
So, she was outside, walking, moping. First she went to the Quidditch field, a sport she hoped to practice one day. Then she went to the lake. Maybe she could sympathize with marine animals because she didn't want to talk to a Hufflepuff, let alone a dirty Mudblood.
As she walked, she saw a girl, dressed in the house of these dreams, sitting in the park. She walked over to her, who seemed so unworthy of her house. She had already seen it several times. She had no opinion, and had heard nothing about it. She wanted to make up her own mind before answering him nastily, but knowing that she was at Slytherin, and not she was preventing it.

"- Hello, I think I've seen you around before. I'm Misty, sorry I never got your name...
- Of course! You then, you don't look like a Slytherin. I'm Brooklyn Pierce."

"Dirty weak," Brooke thought.

Misty's first reaction was pure surprise. She didn't look like a Slytherin? Who was this girl, Brooklyn who was certainly not a Slytherin, to argue with her about her house. Misty remembered seeing Brooklyn in Hufflepuff robes. I suppose the stereotype of all Hufflepuffs being nice is a bit off, she thought. Quickly, her temper began to rise. So far, she had managed to control her anger while at Hogwarts. Aside from a few days when she would bitterly bicker with others. When she was alone however, she could feel the anger she kept inside her stirring in her stomach. Now, Misty knew she wouldn't be running away from this. Brooklyn looked annoyed, but also smug. The wind whipped between them, and Misty took a step forward, imagining herself larger than she actually was. Now that she was looking Brooklyn in the eyes she saw such strong disdain in them. Misty wondered what she possibly could have done to gain her ire. She could wonder about that later. Now, her instincts urged her to respond.
"I'm sorry, it must be awfully hard to be so colorblind that the green of Slytherin fades into other colors. I'd be very happy to point out different colors for you. Unless, of course, you aren't colorblind, but then the only option would be that you mean to insult me. Please enlighten me as to what I've done to wrong you." Misty held her breath waiting for Brooklyn's response.

- What did you do to me?

Brooklyn huffed. Misty had done nothing wrong, on the contrary.

- Sorry. You didn't do anything to me, it's true. It's just that I shouldn't be in this house that I hate enough not to say his name, but in Slytherin, with my brother, like all our ancestors. I don't know if you understand what I mean by that.

She had been mean to her for no reason other than her house. But it was unfair that some people had access to the best of homes, and not to it. She had done nothing to deserve this. But wearing yellow clothes all day bored him. It was ugly, yellow, she preferred green, as well as what accompanied it. Hufflepuff was far too welcoming and loving a house than Brooke. She did not see herself in her place there, unlike Misty's house.
She wondered if she could understand how she felt if she too would have liked to be in a house other than Slytherin. It was unfair. For her, the Sorting Hat took into account the preferences. However, she had been assigned to Hufflepuff. She did not even dare to warn these parents. Anthony either hadn't done it, he would never have done it without warning her. She was going to have to send that damn letter sooner or later. She wanted to talk to her brother about it first before speeding things up.

Misty was taken aback. She didn't think she could be any more surprised today, but she had been proved wrong. Was this one of the Slytherin, pureblood fanatic her mother had told her about. She was sure some of her house mates held some old fashioned opinions on muggles and muggleborns, but she wasn't about to bring it up. Now she was being confronted outright by a bitter Hufflepuff. Brooklyn was clearly upset and distraught, Misty felt some of her indignation fade. If she had any siblings, she would certainly want to be in the same house as them. Misty wondered what it would be like to have an ancestry to live up to. Her parents were both orphans, part of what had brought them together. She could find out about her grandparents if she wanted, but it caused her parents, particularly her mother pain to remember. She knew she should leave, her mother had directed her to stay far away from people with the kinds of opinions Brooklyn clearly held, but something compelled her to stay. Her sorting had also caused her stress. Misty had no expectations for what house she would get into. She was fairly certain Ravenclaw wasn't for her, as she couldn't sit still to study, and was happy enough to be in Slytherin, the house of her father. What disturbed her was the perceptions of the hat. Since she arrived, Misty felt as though she had been carrying the burden of finding a purpose and passion. After all, she was Slytherin now, and had to apply her ambition to somewhere. How much stock could be put in the sorting anyway?
"Well, to tell the truth, I think the whole sorting process is a bit silly. After all what eleven year old truly knows who they are?" When Brooklyn didn't respond she continued , "I didn't ask to be put in Slytherin, but according to the sorting hat, I should be there as much as your brother. Anyway, I don't see why Hufflepuff is seen as bad. They rise above the rest in helping others who aren't strong enough to help themselves." Misty chose her words carefully, trying to make Hufflepuff appeal to someone with an ambitious nature.

She knows who she is. It has nothing of an Poufsoffle, except can be the love of nature, but not like the other Hufflepuffs. She was like a Slytherin and she knew it, so why was she not there?
And then in a few years, oh sure it was in a long time, but his half-sister Alyson would come back to Hogwarts in turn. Brooke and Anthony would have been gone a long time ago, but she had no doubts, she would also go to Slytherin, like their whole family. She felt like she was ashamed of it. She did not feel humiliated, not necessarily ashamed, but she was sad. She did not feel out of place at Hufflepuff. However, with Misty, she felt much more in her place than with the other students of her house. She still had no friends there. She suspected that she would be better in any other house, where she already knew people. But life had decided otherwise. "Stupid life," thought Brooke.

- I don't feel like I belong in my own house, it shouldn't happen like that! I should be happy to return to my yellow common room after school, instead of imagining myself in the Greens' room.

She blew. It was hard, really hard.

- By the way, you can call me Brooke.

Misty was relieved that Brooklyn's, no Brooke's, tone had softened. Still, she had no idea what she could say to console Brooke. Misty couldn't imagine being in any other house than Slytherin, what would her parents tell her if she was suddenly in a different house? Probably to make friends, she thought dryly. She wasn't about to tell Brooke her problem was the same as her own. Instead, she thought of her uncle, who felt out of place in his whole life. She wondered where he was now. Likely staring into space on their sofa. Did he ever think about her, or was it too hard for his mind to reconcile the image of her he knew and that of a young witch. She sighed, and took a step back, trying to appear less confrontational. The last thing she wanted was for a teacher or prefect to find them and assume a fight was about to break out. Misty hated situations like this, where unpleasant parts of life just couldn't be changed or fixed. She couldn't help her uncle and couldn't help Brooke. No, she couldn't fix Brooke's perceived problem, but perhaps she could help her.
"You must have some relatives who weren't in Slytherin. Besides, your house doesn't need to define you. You can still seek out people similar to you no matter what house they are in. You aren't trapped by your house."

No one in his house looked like him, that was the problem. She had no friends at home. And even if she wanted to, there was no one like her. It was a difficult subject to talk about, but Misty didn't have to judge her for what she thought.

- I know that's what I have to do but, how to say ... the Hufflepuffs are tolerant, not me. Everyone here tolerates everyone, not me.

She did not yet know what blood she was, it was delicate. If she had Muggle origins, Brooke would be too embarrassed. She who finally seemed to be a friend, she didn't want her to be of Muggle origin.

- I am someone who hates those who are even a Muggle quarter. I hate them. Sorry if you are of Muggle origin, but I can't. There are no elite Thoroughbreds in Hufflepuff, and I need friends in my house. I don't know if you understand what I mean by that, but there are only Half-Bloods or Mudbloods in this house. It's hard for someone like me.

She hopes that Misty is a Pureblood, not a girl of Muggle descent. She would probably go right after if she told him that.

- I get along pretty well with those of other houses, but in mine, nobody. I'm never in the common room because I have no one to sit with there. I'm trying! But I can't.

Brooke still seemed miserable. Even more so than before, was she really doing that awfully at consoling her or was there something else going on? Was there something obvious she was missing? Could other Hufflepuffs be bullying her. She would never have thought of Hufflepuffs as unwelcoming, but then again, she had never met a Hufflepuff like Brooke either. Misty tensed her muscles. This conversation hadn't left the danger zone. Then Brooke responded.
" I know that's what I have to do but, how to say ... the Hufflepuffs are tolerant, not me. Everyone here tolerates everyone, not me." Now Misty realized. Alarms went off in her head. Surely Brooke was talking about muggleborns. Soon her fear was confirmed as Brooke spoke of her hatred of anyone who was any part muggle. Even though Misty could tell Brooke believed in what she was saying, she also looked genuinely apologetic. Would Brooke really turn on her if she knew about her father's blood status. And her mother wasn't exactly an 'elite' pureblood. Misty had feared this from the start of their conversation. Now she was glad she hadn't brought up her uncle. She knew Brooke would hate for her struggle to be compared to a muggle's. Misty also noticed Brooke's casual use of Mudblood. This was definitely treading into some dangerous waters. Brooke also looked desperate for her answer. What could she do. She couldn't lie, a friendship based on lies would be no friendship at all and would certainly fall apart. On the flip side, if she told the truth there was no chance Brooke would ever speak kindly to her again. Besides, her parents would never want her to be around someone with such outdated opinions. But, there was something about Brooke that had kept Misty here, even as she knew what she likely believed. Over their short conversation, Misty had grown to like Brooke, and didn't want to ruin any chance they had at friendship. She was running out of time to think before it would become suspicious. She decided on the truth, just not the whole truth.
"My parents are both magical. But I don't..." She hesitated, "I don't share all of your views on the world."

She was so happy when she learned that she was of witch ancestry. She was now attached to her, she was probably the only one she considered a true friend here.
She understood that she did not share these opinions, it did not bother her. Brooklyn didn't want to spoil this beginning of friendship by telling her that it bothered her, and then, it was wrong. She was happy to finally have a friend. A friend like her, who would understand her. It was nice. She felt silly for thinking that she could have rejected her for it. They had to accept themselves as they were. If she had been Half-Blood or Muggle, it would have been difficult for her because she loved Misty. Apart from her brother, few people understood her like her, and that touched her very much.

- I understand. I am as I am, and so are you.

She hesitated before continuing.

- Thanks for not getting angry. I'm not friends with someone for their blood, know that. But I was raised like that. And even, it is not my education that gives me that. I don't like people different from me. I'm not saying that someone who doesn't look like me is getting on my nerves, but Muggles are different in my opinion. Wizards and Muggles do not mix.

She sighed.

- I'm so sorry. I would stop talking about Muggleborns like that if you mind. And sorry for what I told you earlier. If you are in Slytherin you deserve it. Apparently more than me.

She laughed and smiled at Misty. She was a real friend.
