Trials in Suspension
Day: Friday, the 24th of October, 2025
Time: 1:35 pm/13:35, during Flying Class
From the first class alone, it was clear to see that Aisling was struggling. She had lost count of the number of times she tried to summon her broom, ultimately ending with nothing to show for it. Aisling gritted her teeth. I just want to snap this thing, she thought. How in the world was she going to fly if her broom wouldn't even listen to her?
Aisling sighed. It was at least a bit of an understatement to say that she was disappointed. Just like how her favorite animals, owls, can fly, Aisling always dreamed of flying among them, even before she learned that she was a witch. When she first learned that Flying was a course at Hogwarts, she knew she'd be able to live that fantasy. In her mind, it would only be recreationally, no Quidditch or broom-racing for her, but the idea of soaring in the sky with her beloved winged animals elated her. But that hope was beginning to fade the second she tried summoning her broom. "Ugh!" she groaned. How am even going to be able to pass this class if I can't even get my broom up? Let alone fly, she thought.
Aisling looked over to see a Gryffindor her age, not too far from her. She had stormy-blue eyes and hair that was as brown as chestnuts. Aisling's heart raced as she approached her. While she had some friends already, Aisling was starting to feel the nervousness she had felt at the start of the term. Just when she thought her social anxiety was dissipating, it reared its ugly head yet again. "Um, ex ... excuse me," she stammered, "I ... I need some ... some help with my broom. You ... you seem to be doing alright with it." She took in a deep breath. "Would you, um" she muttered, "would you be able to ... to help me out?"

Rosaline was used to the pace of life here, not like her being lost and stumbling around in the castle in her first month. Being in the Flying class, she was quite comfortable with it. She had been practicing with her cousins from a very young age, so she had already known a lot she should learn in the first year. Though she was still concentrated in class, not missing anything the Professor said.
In the free time of the Flying class, she and her friends were chatting. A smile appeared on her face. The gentle breeze blew past. It was a very fine day to fly. She felt she had made some friends she adored, and she was happy to know them. As she continued chatting, in the corner of her eye, she saw a girl with ginger hair, about her age, having trouble with her broom. The ginger-haired girl was a quiet classmate; she hadn’t talked with her before, but she wanted to know her. Rosaline furrowed her brows with concern and started thinking if she could help her in any way. She paused her conversation and paid attention to the girl. In her experience, Rosaline thought the reason the girl couldn’t get the broom up might be not used to communicating with the broom. Brooms were a little like wands from her point of view. They all shared some sort of humanity that magical objects had.
She figured it out, and when she wanted to lend a hand to her, the girl came to her. Looking at the girl’s yellow crest on her school robe, she noticed she was a Hufflepuff. A house full of loyal and sweet people. The Hufflepuff girl seemed quite nervous to talk with Rosaline, so she gave her a big smile, hoping this would let her feel less worried. She asked Rosaline if she could help her. Immediately, Rosaline said, “Of course! I’m more than willing to help you. What kind of problem are you facing right now? I hope I can be useful to you.” She gave her a warm smile to assure her, then she continued, “Also, my name is Rosaline Everhart. Nice to meet you.”

Aisling smiled as the Gryffindor approached her. "Th ... thank you," she stammered. She glanced down at her broom before back up at the girl. "I ... I can't seem to summon my broom," she admitted, "because when I try to say 'up', it doesn't budge. Not even hovering." Did this give away that she wasn't a Pureblood or even a Half-Blood? Probably, but how on Earth was Aisling going to pass if she couldn't get her broom off the ground? While it'd be so simple to just pick it up off the ground and take off from there, somehow she felt that the professor would give her lower marks for it. Then again, maybe the only way brooms could fly was by commanding it to go up. If she couldn't do it on her own, she was going to need some help from a peer. And this Gryffindor girl seemed to have the hang of it.
Aisling smiled slightly when Rosaline introduced herself. Her warm smile was enough to let her know that it was okay to ask her for help. Aisling swallowed as she steeled herself. "Nice to ... to meet you," she stuttered, "I'm .. I'm Aisling by ... by the way."

date place tags wc speech outfits 24/10/25 Flying @Aisling Doyle 405/200 #36563c xxxThe Hufflepuff girl returned a smile to Rosaline. Her ginger hair under the sunshine was really pretty. Although the girl was still quite nervous, she spoke up about the problem she had faced and her name. “Your name is so lovely. I’m glad to meet you today,” she said. Rosaline followed Aisling’s gaze toward her broom. Ah, it indeed was the issue. Her guess was right. Hearing Aisling say the broom wouldn’t come up, even if she had said ‘up’ to it, the young lion furrowed her brows. “Hmm, maybe your tone could be more certain? The school brooms are usually more stubborn than all the other brooms, because they feel they are the boss in the Flying lesson,” she said all this swiftly, tapping her fingers on her broom. Aisling seemed a little tense. Rosaline gave her another smile with encouragement. “What if I show you once? It’ll be more clearer, I think. I still hope I can be helpful,” she tilted her head, musing.
As she put the broom on the ground, she explained, “Flying isn’t something you can quickly get used to, I promise. I was even worse back then. I don’t know why my cousin’s broom hated me so much. I broke my right leg once.” She chuckled, but felt that this might not be the best story to demonstrate how fun flying was. "Anyway, I want to let you know that it does take time to be better at this! Just like any other sport, football, basketball, or even badminton,” she added. Feeling she had probably rambled a lot in front of the newly met classmate, she flushed a little. She did this again. It was her habit to get too excited whenever she had the chance to meet new people, and she would say too much at once.
She glanced at the broom, which lay still on the ground, not rolling around. Meeting Aisling’s bluish-green eyes, Rosaline held her hand above the broom, “The ‘up’ can be firm or determined. You can decide which works better for you. I like to be more determined to summon the broom.” She paused for a brief moment, smiling at Aisling, then said, “Up!” Her tone was resolute. She didn’t leave any room for negotiation for the broom, which jumped right into Rosaline’s hand. Turning to Aisling’s direction, she asked, “Do you want to try this one more time? I believe in you!”

Aisling smiled when the Gryffindor girl complimented her on her name. She noted the girl's suggestion, which she suggested that Aisling sound firmer or more determined. Considering she wasn't trying to draw a ton of attention in class, it made sense that Aisling wouldn't be able to draw the broom's attention, either, though she partially expected it to be an exception; that the will of the rider would override the need to be under the radar. In hindsight, she could see why this logic was a bit flawed. Aisling held her fair hand over the broom's handle as she cleared her throat. "UP!" she shouted. Her tone was definitely stronger than firm. It sounded as though she was yelling at the broom, almost like a parent does when their child causes trouble.
Aisling looked down to see that the broom stayed put. She took in a deep breath, her chest feeling as though it was folding inward. How is it not moving? she thought to herself, was I too loud? Was it my tone? I thought I sounded confident. At least a little bit. Aisling looked back at the Gryffindor girl as she let out an exasperated exhale. "I ... I don't," she stammered before looking back at the Gryffindor girl, "I don't understand. Shouldn't it have come up?"

date place tags wc speech outfits 24/10/25 Flying @Aisling Doyle 334/200 #36563c xxxRosaline held her broom and stood there observing Aisling, hoping her suggestion was useful to the newly met Hufflepuff. Aisling seemed to take Rosaline’s advice very seriously. It made her blush a little. She wasn’t particularly a Quidditch expert. How could she give any tips to others? On the other hand, Rosaline was glad she could help others in need. Her cousin, Rowen, always told her to tone down this inclination a bit, because she sometimes would be more devoted than her counterpart. Rosaline shook her hand to not be distracted furthermore by her own thoughts.
Aisling was putting her hand above her broom, which was on the ground. This was it. The time was coming. Even Rosaline was nervous for her. Her hand gripped tighter to her broom tighter as she didn’t notice this. “UP!” This time, Aisling’s command was loud and clear. She bet students around them could hear Aisling’s determined voice, too. Yet the broom was still lying on the ground. Rosaline’s brows furrowed. What could go wrong? She scratched her chin thoughtfully.
Quickly, she shifted her gaze from the broom on the ground to Aisling, who seemed rather upset right now. Rosaline didn’t think this was a terrible outcome at all. She tried to console the Hufflepuff girl, “Hey, it’s okay. I guess this might just be the first few times you have tried! Practice makes it perfect. We can try again soon.” Rosaline could see the girl’s spirit was down. As Aisling asked her question, Rosaline suddenly realized something. She raised her head with bright eyes, as if there was a shining lightbulb above her head. “What if you try to picture yourself successfully summoning the broom? This trick is called manifesting. I learned it from the Internet,” she chuckled and continued, “Through this, we can increase the possibility of success. I know it sounds superstitious, but I’m kind of like this method.” Rosaline looked in Aisling’s direction and grinned, “It’s really not a big deal. You got this!”
