This week couldn't possibly find a way to become more catastrophic. Such a thing would defy the laws of physics, of the universe... any law that had ever existed. One person surely didn't deserve this amount of misfortunes, no matter how terrible they had previously behaved. And Elena truly believed karma had made a mistake, for she couldn't recall any bad actions that might have led to this disastrous consequences.

Firstly, the word sleep seemed to have fled from her vocabulary. Turning and tossing, minutes turned into hours that turned into days. In four days she believed she might have had approximately five hours of non-waking, all plagued by her usual formula of nightmares and nocturnal terrors, with a dash of nested dreams.

Secondly, teachers seemed to subconsciously know when she was in no state for tests, because every single day of the past week had been filled with small exams and tons of homework, which she somehow managed to fail. Her. Every single one.

Thirdly, it appeared her mood might have been harshed than usual, for she had gotten into a fight with one dear friend. Her attempt at an apology had somehow turned into another disagreement, and she was presently still annoyed at this interaction. And, cherry on top, she hadn't seen Cosmo in days. The feline seemed to have mysteriously disappeared, which caused her more anxiety she could have fathomed.

The honey haired girl was now walking carefully on the pathway to her favourite tree - the stone path being covered with fresh mud, she found herself obliged to advance slowly on the grass just beside it. One lazy step after the other, the raven was deeply absorbed in the rereading of last night's entry, the black journal resting in her slightly shaking hands. She had a feeling her nightmare from last night had been... different from the other times, yet she couldn't possibly decipher the letter she had scribbled early this morning, half asleep. Eyes squinting, she took another step towards her willow tree-

Everything happened in the blink of an eye.

She vaguely heard a voice rise from behind, before a violent gust of wind shook her, as if a train had passed right next to her. A cry escaped her as she lost her balance. She felt her journal slip from her hands and fly away, while she herself wobbled and crashed miserably into the cool grass. A pained grunt escaped her. Eyes rising towards the source of this chaos, she suddenly realized it wasn't a train but a very much alive boy, who had just flew right past her. "HEY !" She yelled, getting up and gesturing her closed fist towards the disappearing figure. "WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING YOU BRAINLESS MORON !"

May mornings reeled with opportunity and a pulsing vibration of a school waiting to be conquered. When he returned back in March, it all felt so muddled, and for no reason too. But alas, the teenager had been reviving himself slowly as he locked his wounds and the hit to his ego of being assigned as a second year. Well, that wasn't the fucking case anymore. Harlan Montgomery would be a fourth year, as he should've been, and yearned for the day he could return to school as a fourth year and remind Hogwarts of the fact that he was quite the cunning and apt wizard deserving of the uppermost societal echelon.

With a lackluster and quite frankly humiliating defeat by the Ravenclaw Broom Racing team, Harlan politely removed himself from the sport and decided to re-focus his efforts on the Gryffindor Quidditch Team as a Chaser. It didn't hurt that Finnegan, his roommate last year, had helped to twist his arm just enough for him to see the benefit of joining a team that needed the help.

It's why he gripped tightly to his Silver Arrow and in usual style, Harlan found a launching off point at the top the castle and took an afternoon ride between classes through the Quidditch Pit focusing on his speed and maneuverability. The fourth year had been pushing himself to the limit, surpassing limits he hadn't known to tap into a whole new gear of speed that made control just a smidge harder.

An errant turn at the edge of the lake had Harlan yelling " Woah! " as he clutched his broomstick and tried to right his course until he accidentally sped past a bystander where the speed of his broom had sent her flying and what looked like a journal tossed directly into the air. With some quick thinking and willing himself back, Harlan barely caught the journal with a hand as it unclasped and now the Gryffindor had been hovering in the sky with two hands on the open journal as he clasped it shut before he slowly floated closer to the girl with every intention of handing it back to her.

" My ba — " Harlan started an apology before her yelling had him stop right in his tracks. " Woah, that's a lot of energy. " The energy took him for surprise as his facial expression twisted from casual into a slight judgmental shock. Did that warrant such an elicit response? Harlan certainly didn't think so.

Instead, he doubled down and gripped the journal with force and pulled it back while his other hand was on his broomstick and Harlan unmounted it so that he could stand at full height looking down at the younger student.

" You were saying? " It was always a curious thing to see how bold someone would be when standing directly in front of them and Harlan was feeling mighty courageous this afternoon. Perhaps it was just that lion in him or the thought of being a bit disrespected, but he'd stand there tall while looking down on the girl to see what exactly her next move would be.

Gritting through clenched teeth, the golden haired inspected her limbs, relieved to find none of them missing or twisted at an odd angle. She was quite sure her ankle was sprained, and her left arm ached excruciatingly, for it was the only part of her that had tried to cushion her fall. Luckily the grass was devoid of any rocks, or she might have seriously hurt herself. Barbaric idiot. Cursing silently, then out loud, at the disappearing figure, she wiped the dust off her jeans before looking around for her lost belongings. Her leather bag was laying in the dirt, a sigh which made her heart clench. It was a gift from her father, an original vintage from the 90s, one which she loved dearly. Only her journal was left to recover, and then she could classify this disagreeable incident as closed. Her journal. Her journal ??

Spinning around several times, gazing at all directions, she felt panic rise through her chest as her eyes were unable to settle on the item. No no no no no. Biting her lower lip in an anxious motion, she swiftly turned around when she heard a faint thud on the ground. A boy had suddenly appeared behind her - a sudden and unexpected sight which caused a slight fright to the raven. Judging by the broom casually dangling in his hands, he was the ill-mannered flyer that had disrupted her peace a few seconds prior. Elena winced as a flash of white illuminated a corner of her vision, her headache throbbing harder than ever in her temples, making it difficult to align her thoughts. The mumbled words the stranger uttered got squished together and muffled behind a loud whistle in her ears, only hearing his last sentence. Tilting her head back up - why did everyone had to be taller than her ? - she glared back at him.

"Why, you'd be deaf in addition of having little to no manners ?" She hissed, not cowering before his failed attempt at intimidating her. Taking a step closer, and grunting as her sprained ankle touched the floor, she stopped before articulating slowly, "I said : 'Watch where you're going, you brainless moron'."

The boy facing her seemed barely a few years older than her, and the images that sparked her head while running a judgmental gaze on his figure were as disagreeable as his person. Sharp edges of broken glass, red neon signs and drunk fighters collapsing on a rainy, empty street. His hair was a sandy, caramel color and cut short ; his eyes were as cold as the far-north's glaciers, unmoving like the sharks she once saw in an aquarium. Drawn by the scent of blood, eager to dive their teeth deeper in the open wound. She definitely didn't even remotely liked this person, and every single one of her six senses confirmed her intuition. A fight was of no use to someone like him, as he thrived on it better than anyone else - and she clearly didn't have the time nor the energy to engage.

Still running her analysis, everything suddenly faded when she spotted a black leather-bounded volume in his hands. Her heart sank, and while she tried to convince herself he could very well be the type to own such a thing, her negotiations came to a halt when she spotted the silver letters engraved in the corner. No. Her journal, one of her most prized possession, something that must never ever fall in any other hands than hers, was in the ones of this gigantic troll. Whom seemed very well the type to blackmail, should he understand the importance of this notebook. "That's mine, by the way," she pointed out, voice as disinterested as possible. "I should like to have it back."

Springtide outside of the castle grounds flourished in verdant hues of lush florals and chittering of fauna but little did they know of the shift in the atmosphere happening in real time. The flames were fanned and the static in the air flourished as a storm brewed in motivation’s clashing. Did Elena realize that she had started off in a flurry of offenses and indignities aimed like a sniper at Harlan’s pristine character? Did she not realize he had the power to maim, to strike, and to devour? He was like a hungered predator, starved for years to bare fang and claw against those who wished to prosper at his expense.

Flashes of a certain viper returned to his memory after months of not thinking of her – Caoimhe Kyle, the first person who ever sucked Harlan entirely into her orbit and devoured him whole. The reason he had to homeschool, the reason for a broken psyche; he’d never allowed it to be fractured so badly ever again, not if he could help it.

But that’s what brought him to this place here and now where this young blonde student stood with what felt like a rage that could rival his own. He’d make a couple of assumptions about her: striking foxlike features, a bite in her otherwise pristine vernacular, and a journal that she’d seemingly kill for felt ridiculously Ravenclaw. Did her ambitions know no bounds? Harlan would probably find her fascinating and a kinship if they hadn’t stumbled like this their first interaction? Oh well, it was time to eat.

As the blonde stepped closer into his territory, his body stood its ground and Harlan’s gaze narrowed as he gripped the journal tight in his hand ensuring she wasn’t getting it with a swift swipe of her hands.

“ Brainess moron, huh. ” He repeated her own words back in an interrogating tone, Harlan’s anger could usually be caged and managed but there was something about this brand of audacity that truly caused the Gryffindor to fume. What it was taking to not just aim his wand at the girl and send her flying into the Great Lake, but he wasn’t trying to get expelled only after just getting back to school.

“ The bizarre thing right now is i’m the one who has the thing you want. ” Broom in one hand and journal in the other, Harlan carefully tucked his broom into his armpit and used his free hand to open the book itself and paged through before pulling it open into a random page before he began to read aloud the following passage: “ December 19th, 2024. The same nightmare came back tonight. ”

The journal remained open as he turned back swiftly to the girl with a cheshire grin and a body ready to leap backwards if it was necessary. “ I don’t know, seems like an interesting read. Especially if I'm such a brainless moron, it might be good to educate myself. Don’t you think? ” His tone was dripping in sarcasm and honey, setting the trap and goading the other into a strike.

It was twisted, he knew it, but there was something about this that gave the Gryffindor such a thrill. She deserved the vitriol from the anger she held inside and he'd return it back to her twofold.

A quiet breeze carried hinted scents of blooming flowers, life finding its way back to earth as the peaceful haze of winter slowly faded, promises of a flourishing springtime floating through the air. Yet this peaceful atmosphere was without effect on the two raging soul circling each other in the middle of this eerie scene, fiery hearts yearning for but the flicker of a flame to set ablaze.

She could feel it, coursing through her veins as though lava had been trickling down her heart, invading every worn out organ she possessed. The weariness she carried with her had nested into her chest, rotten until it was stripped from its every attributs, save for one — anger. Her head was pulsing with a pain lingering on the unbearable, every last of her limbs felt heavier than before. Frustration, tiredness — all had accumulated to merge into a cardinal sin, one that weaved hateful words into the voice of mankind, nurtured loathing in their hearts. Wrath.

A feeling the lion facing her knew but too well, given the spark igniting in his eyes as honeyed venom slipped from the moonchild's lips. He moved as though he considered himself above her in the food chain, a predator honed by years of hunting, years of ripping flesh and tasting blood. Ha. Perhaps another raven would fleet facing such sharp canines, yet this one had a god-like rage coursing through her blood, and was not afraid of a mere size difference. Tilting her blonde head upward to lock storm-tossed eyes with fire-blazed ones, her expression showed nothing but a burning annoyance, threatening to flare at any second.

His words trailed off to her ears, as the world suddenly found itself devoid of any sound. Only her heart beat, loudly, deafening. A quickening pace that would have drawn a ravenous foam at the mouth of any carnivore standing nearby — fear. A devastating terror invading her every thought, shades of icy blue and indigo purple tainting the canva of her mind. No, no— Eyes dilated, she rushed forward, the fear quickly shifting into the anger she had been reluctantly trying to contain, now free of any limit. "Give that-" she spat, terror etched onto every inflexion of her voice, leaping to catch it but he easily evaded, "BACK!"

He opened it. No no no no no. He has no right. That diary is the only item keeping her from losing her mind. It contains every nightmare, every hallucination, ever little thing her sickened brain sends her, every plague following her into the pit of sleepless nights. Her breath quickened, attempting at prying her very heart from the claws of this feline devil once more, and failing. If anyone- if anyone were to read it, she might—

“December 19th, 2024.”
"Shut up."
“The same nightmare came back tonight.”
"SHUT UP."

He stepped back, and she followed, navy eyes fixated on her leather-bound soul being stripped bare, as bile and venom accumulated, turning her gaze from irritation to pure and unfiltered hatred, masking the fear lurking beneath. Her right hand tightly wrapped itself around the familiar curve of her wand, and she hissed, articulating every syllable. "Give. It. Back."
