Although assigning culpability to any individual was surely unimportant, Livia had found within recent weeks that some part of her simply itched to place a name to the irksome actions the occasional rapscallion left behind. Within the past week alone, the decorous girl's nose had wrinkled at the mere sight of piles of rubbish left strewn about, at suits of armour thrown about haphazardly, at stains of ink from pots long knocked over. The sheer careless of her peers astounded her, and although the responsibility did not lie upon her wiry shoulders alone, the unscrupulous mess of what appeared to be wrappers, ashes and leftover firewood thrown about the Courtyard left Livia no choice: to be able to utilise the space in its intended tranquility, the offensive offscourings simply had to be dealt with.

After thoroughly reviewing a chapter about the Stunning Spell in an advanced Defence Against the Dark Arts book, Livia momentarily retired to her dormitory so that she could change her raiment to something properly befitting such a goodly action. Within only a few short minutes, the spindly girl had donned a beige jumper, brown corduroy trousers, brown loafers and a light brown overcoat. Two quick strokes of her Comb of Vanity had her dark hair back in its usual tightly-pulled chignon. She hesitated before throwing an emerald-green scarf about her throat to shield her delicate skin from the Scottish wind.

She arrived in the Courtyard with a vengeance – with her chin lifted triumphantly, the beginning of a smile begging to tug at the corners of her slightly-chapped lips and her arms crossed over her chest, she seemed equanimous and in control of the rubbish that had seized the otherwise beautiful part of the castle. The reclamation of its splendour was a conquest Livia was certain she ought to undertake.

It, thus, began with a simple utterance. 'Scourgify,' the girl said, her warm voice crisp in the cold air. Puffs of breath decreased the visibility in front of her, but she soldiered on, tidying up stains and slipping pieces of debris into a previously-emptied satchel. The work was methodical, calming, and as she moved from one spot to another, she began to lose the usual observance that plauged her in favour of zeroing in on her objectives. Any students who chattered nearby were ignored, their words of less import than the hum of a fly.

[quote]That day, Zephyr was finally allowed to leave the hospital wing after two days of resting and gaining his strength back. The flying practice incident left him sore, mostly in his arms and shoulders, and a persistent headache that won't go away. He spent the past few minutes walking along the corridors, just thinking about what happened and what went wrong. He was frustrated with himself, not because of the pain or the bruises he got, it was the carelessness and losing focus that nearly ended in disaster. Even though there was no serious injury, it was enough to make him rethink his approach to magic and his flying skill.

He reached the courtyard with the hope the crisp air would clear his thoughts. He was about to take a seat when he saw a small scrap of paper lying near the bench. He picked it up to dispose of later, but then he spotted another one, a tiny wrapper fluttering under a rock. Frowning, he reached out to grab it. As he looked around, there was yet another scrap, and then another, and another. Pieces of rubbish scattered across the otherwise neat courtyard. His hand on his hip, the crease on his forehead deepened in annoyance. “What the…?”

Bending to pick up a particularly stubborn scrap of parchment, he heard a voice not far from where he was. Was that a spell that was casted? He glanced up just in time to see pieces of debris floating and going into a bag, and a girl with her wand up and moving across the courtyard with a look of concentration and focus. Her movement were careful and deliberate. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight bun and a green scarf was wrapped around her neck.

Zephyr forgot what he was there in the first place and just watched her for a while. Her motions were methodical, almost playful in careful gestures, the whole scene seem unexpectedly charming. The girl was calmly taking care of the trash as if the task itself were a game. Without thinking, he grabbed the next piece of litter near him, trying to mimic her sense of focus. The more he worked, the more aware he became of the girl but for some reason, he didn’t want to interrupt her.

Seeing a piece of fruit someone left near a bench, he grumbled under his breath, "Leaving their trash here, seriously? Who would do such a th--" he went there to pick it up only to slip on a banana peel he didn't notice was right under his other shoe. "...thaaaanng...ahhhh!!" as he landed on his backside with a thump, hair mussed. "Oww..! "Realizing what just happened, his cheeks burned and tried to look casual while lying on his back in the middle of the courtyard with a banana peel close to his elbow. What a disaster!

Despite being nearly completely engrossed in the mission she had assigned herself, Livia was not so unaware of her surroundings as to not notice the words of the other disgruntled student in the vicinity. She did her best to appear unaffected by his words, although a muscle in her cheek twitched as she suppressed a small smile. The boy was right – it truly was such a barbaric thing to leave rubbish strewn about where anyone could...

Swiftly, her chin swivelled, and her green gaze landed on the boy, who had landed on his rump. Livia stood, dumbfounded, her arms falling to her side as she remained completely unaware of how to react. Given his previous words, she doubted he had fallen for attention. She cast a quick glance around the Courtyard and quickly realised no one else seemed keen to help the fallen boy. Livia sighed – she was hardly the best-suited individual for assisting another, given that most of her well-intentioned attempts to help her little brother often ended up in tears welling up in his big brown eyes. Nonetheless, she would try.

She took slow, measured steps in an attempt not to startle the boy. Finally, when she had approached him, she extended a hand towards his prone figure. Although it was improper to bend down, practicality, in this instance, trumped propriety and politesse, and she crouched so that the boy would be able to grasp her hand more easily, should he wish to do so. 'That was quite a slip,' she commented neutrally, doing her best to maintain eye contact with the boy on the ground. 'Are you alright? It would not be ideal if you were hurt.'

[quote]The sound he just made was impossible to miss.

That sudden thump, followed by his very undignified yelp could slice through anyone's ears, as well as focus, which would definitely snap their attention away from whatever they're doing to look at him. Zephyr would have sat up right away after falling, but no, he lay there staring up at the sky, trying to convince himself that if he stayed very still, maybe the last ten seconds would simply undo themselves. Of course, they did not. He became painfully aware of the presence above him, which meant someone saw what happened. When he turned his head slightly and spotted the girl approaching, his stomach twisted. Great....of all people.

He shifted and propped himself up on one elbow, which only reminded him he was not fully recuperated yet. He winced slightly as his sore shoulder protested. Two days out of the hospital wing, and he was already proving the healer right. Despite that, he managed a sheepish smile at the girl he had just been watching a while ago before his fall. Green eyes went briefly to the spot where the banana peel had been, “I’d like to say that was planned, but no, definitely not.”

He was already assessing himself when she asked him a question. His arms were sore but working. The head was still aching, but no worse than before. But his pride was completely destroyed. “I think I’m okay..." It's my ego that was bruised. "...mostly embarrassed.” She moved closer to his level, and that alone made his ears warm, it didn't help much with his embarrassment. There was a slight hesitation in his actions before taking her offered hand; his grip was gentle but firm.

“Thanks.” He let her help him up a bit stiffly once he was on his feet. Once up, his gaze shifted to the scattered rubbish because he could not look at her directly. “You’ve been cleaning all this up by yourself, haven’t you? I thought of helping you before I... well...demonstrated why rubbish is a bad idea.” Now that he said that out loud, it sounded funny to use as his reason for his fall, and he ended up chuckling. “I’m Zephyr. Zephyr Deakin. I swear I’m usually more coordinated than that.”

As much as Livia exerted effort in examining the boy's expression, she struggled to discern whether or not he was fine. When his gaze darted away, her remained on his face, then glancing down at his body to make sure he had not truly been injured, before following his trajectory. A long-forgotten banana peel sat on the rough floor, a wet trail marring the ground nearest it. Her features remained largely expressionless as she surveyed the scene before her and deduced what had occurred. When she returned her focus to the boy, though, she did her best to offer him a small, judgement-lacking smile. 'Of course. Entirely planned. You know, I had always wondered if banana peels truly were slippery. Thank you for checking for me.'

Pulling him upwards resulted in a sharp exhale from Livia; although certainly capable of handling herself, it could be said that her strongest trait was not the helping of others. Her grip on his hand had been firm, and the action had been successful, but it did take Livia a moment to regain her balance once they were both righted. She steadied her breathing, nodding at his admission. 'It happens to the best of us,' she said in an attempt at comfort.

Her first instinct was to return to the task at hand, but that she was now in a companionable situation gave her pause. She nodded slowly in response to the boy's question, offering him a wry lift of the corners of her lips at what she perceived as a small jest. 'Livia Machavariani,' she responded, extending a hand towards him once again, this time for a proper handshake.

Casting a furtive glance about the courtyard, Livia then shrugged minutely. 'Truly, I must opine that there is no better place to begin than by ridding this place of that dratted banana peel.' Her voice would hold a note of good humour as she glanced back at Zephyr. 'I have been putting the rubbish into this satchel; I intend to clean it thoroughly later. It has been rather time-consuming, though, to pick up the pieces and then clean. If you would prefer to do one task or the other, that may prove more beneficial.'

Unknowingly, Zephyr felt the same way about the girl. He couldn’t discern what was really going on in that girl’s mind if he would only based it on her expression. Even the small smile that adorned her lips somehow made his feelings worse but not because he thought she was mocking him or laughing at his own expense, but because she was actually being nice about this. His initial embarrassment worsened at her admission regarding how slippery a banana peel really is. The blush on his cheeks darkened which scattered to his ears because of her honestly and he could only murmured sheepishly, “Glad I could confirm that for you.” A sound of a shy laugh could be heard from him, finding the situation both amusing and embarrassing, but it’s more of the former than the latter for him. What a way to prove a point, at the cost of his dignity.

There was a lingering soreness and stiffness in his shoulder, both from his flying practice as well as his slip but he tried not to show it too much. Noting how she balanced herself after helping him up, he apologize quickly. “Sorry about that, thanks once again.” He briefly glanced at her and then shifted his eyes away quickly, trying to avoid holding her gaze for too long. “I’ll take your word for that, though if I could be honest, I think I made it look ridiculous than it needed to be.” She introduced herself in return and extended her hand again for a handshake which he returned politely, noting the softness of her hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Livia.” Truth is, he already knew who she was, at least by face, since she was involved in unofficial quidditch matches. Besides that, he saw her around the castle before, always someone composed and put together. It was unfortunate for him that their first official interaction involved him on the ground next to a banana peel. Of all ways to meet someone…

When she mentioned starting with the banana peel, he laughed and grabbed the offending thing and tossed it in the bag as soon as possible before it can hurt someone else, he was still annoyed at it. “I think that one deserves priority. I didn’t even see it, which makes it worse.” He picked up another piece of rubbish nearby, trying to recover some sense of normalcy after what just happened. He gave a curious look at the satchel as she explained how she had been handling both picking and cleaning. Giving it some thought, he commented after a beat, “That’s a lot to manage on your own. Okay then, I’ll take care of picking things up and you can use your spell to clean and sort them into the satchel. You’re right, it’s indeed more beneficial.” There was no embarrassment in that admission, it was practical for him. Without waiting for her reaction, he leaned forward and started gathering more scraps into a small pile. “We’ll have this cleared out in no time.”

The boy's cheeks darkened; for a moment, Livia likened his appearance to that of her brother when he had spent hours lying in the sun. She catalogued this, but knew not how to act upon it, so she simply gazed towards him and listened as his mouth moved. His voice sounded pleasant, its tone echoing in her ears only to be overtaken by the welcome sound of laughter. Livia found herself nodding, though it was not entirely a conscious decision. She remembered to smile almost as an afterthought.

Livia's own eyes widened when the boy apologised once more. This, she did not understand. It was not as if he had harmed her, and it was not as if he had been the one to irresponsibly dispose of his lunch's remains. She nodded once again, this time an acknowledgement rather than an appreciation, before adding, 'Truly, it was not a problem.'

Almost as if in turn, her cheeks would dust pink when he stated it was nice to meet her. This occurrence was unbeknownst to the girl. While the utterance from Zephyr might have been a proper adherence to societal norms, it remained true that such an adherence was altogether welcome. Livia smiled, not regretting it yet, and finding her musles far more amenable than they were previously. 'The same to you, Zephyr. I would look forward to encountering you again – sans bananas, perhaps.'

Humour was something she found difficult to make land. Nonetheless, she would attempt it again. She found it difficult to maintain eye contact after this effort; however, knowing that it was important to do so, her reaction could likely have been described as 'staring'. She would not recognise that such behaviour might be unnerving. Nonetheless, she would still betray what likely managed to pass for a good-natured hint of a smile as Zephyr laughed at her previous jest. Livia could not help but think a victorious, Yes!

He seemed to appreciate her practicality, which was not common. Verily, a sense of tranquility enveloped the girl as she nodded. 'Lovley,' she murmured, finally averting her gaze so she could cast a quick, 'Scourgify,' at the space where the banana peel had been before. Satisfied with that, she would follow Zephyr around the courtyard as he began to rid the space of the rubbish. Once she had collected each offending piece in the satchel, she would murmur a soft-spoken Scourgify to clean the surface the object had lain upon. It became rhythmic in nature; she felt almost as if she were reclining upon a comfortable chaise while listening to a favourite record.

After some time had passed, Livia observed Zephyr once again. He was not someone she had spoken to much previously; however, she now thought that was truly a waste, as he was quite an interesting and kind individual. Thus, she would attempt to make conversation, though it would come out somewhat rushed. 'Are you a first year? Oh – and what sort of activities do you pursue in your spare time? Do you come to the courtyard often?'

OOC Notes: So sorry for the delay!
Zephyr may not be an expert in reading people, but he still believed he's fairly good at it. Although for him, animals were still easier. A nervous sheep would show how nervous it was, and a frightened horse would make its feelings very clear. But people? They were far more complicated and the girl in front of him was difficult to figure out.

It may be true that he noticed the simple things like how she paused first before responding to him. He could only assume she thinks her every word carefully before speaking them out loud. She had a composed expression that, at first glance, it's easy to assume she was cold or not interested but then she would do something unexpected, like smiling at his ridiculous joke. What's more surprising was attempting one herself.

The faint pink that appeared on her cheeks was amusing to watch but he didn't dare comment about it. He was not sure if she realized she was doing it. Instead he laughed when she hoped that their next encounter would be sans bananas. The girl was definitely trying to make a joke and from the way she looked away afterward, he suspected humor was not something she practiced often. Her action told him she was not quite sure whether she succeeded.

It was cute...watching someone so proper and put together make an attempt at being playful. Would he dare think she was trying to step outside of what was comfortable for her. "Don't worry, that was a funny one." He told her while grinning before he could even stop himself. "I'll try to avoid any more 'dangerous' fruit in your presence."

The more time he spent around her, the more he realized there were some contradictions about Livia. To him, she seemed serious and reserved but she noticed details and was willing to help a stranger. Interesting...and a little mysterious, maybe. It was like a locked book sitting on a shelf, one that would make anyone curious about what was written inside.

Now they both agreed to split the work between them, it was easier when there was something to do. Sometimes the best conversations happen while you're busy. He walked around the courtyard to gather scraps and discarded pieces of rubbish while Livia followed behind with her wand. It didn't take long for their movements to fall into a rhythm. He picked things up, then she would clean the space.

When they had cleared most of the courtyard, he looked over at her again only to find her already watching him. Being caught in the act, he quickly looked away and pretended to focus on the next piece of rubbish. But, she surprised him by asking questions. He was glad that she did, It meant she wanted to talk. "Yes, I'm a first year, Hufflepuff." He motioned around him, "All these are new to me so imagine my surprise that magic does exist and there's a school for witches and wizards." He was also asked about his activities, "I like to draw random things, like the castle, the lake, the trees, sometimes just the sky if the clouds look interesting enough."

"I also play the tin whistle." His mouth curved with a shy smile, embarrassed to admit it. "My grandfather taught me when I was younger. I usually play when I have some free time." He brushed some dirt from his fingers as he continued. "There's this habit I have...I love climbing trees when I want to be alone. I will sit up there and draw, or play my tin whistle, or just listen to everything around me." His gaze drifted to the sky, "I have found my favourite tree near the lake." When he looked at her again, his head tilted to the side, out of curiosity. "What about you? Do you have hobbies?"
